We went in around 830pm for our dinner. The host had a sour face and wasn't welcoming at all. The waitress (wearing the spectacles), who took our order was loud, rude and crass mannered. Our food was brought in less than 5 minutes, was raw and chewy. We asked for salt and the waitress responded with a "haaa?". It seemed like they were in rush to get us out. When we asked for to-go boxes large enough to fit the satay, the waitress just asked us to remove the skewers and stuff them. I've ordered here a few times for delivery and thought this place was just OK each time. Here's what we got recently: Yellow curry with chicken and potatoes: flavor is pretty good. I was not super impressed with the chicken though since the pieces were quite dry. I liked the potatoes! Pad see ew with chicken: same problem, chicken breast was pretty dry. Flavor is decent although not the best pad see ew I've had. Vegetable stir fry: ugh this dish was $14 and they barely gave you anything. It was also mostly string beans and bean sprouts (I hate bean sprouts). This was absolutely not worth it! Beef with basil: beef was tough again and I thought the flavor was just OK. The most poorly done pineapple fried rice in the Bay Area. Three pieces of prawn no pineapples no cashews . Portions aren't enough for three order more . Based on the dishes that I ordered, I would give this place a 3.5 stars. The service is good, and they are really accommodating for vegetarians where they will try to make any dish vegetarian. I got the Singapore Noodles with tofu instead of meat. I ordered the noodles because it said it was spicy. It had a very slight kick, but it's not spicy in my standards. But then again, I have a high tolerance for spice. The noodles themselves were interesting, super thin, and held the flavor of the whole dish. The tofu however couldn't, but I wouldn't say anything for that because the dish wasn't meant to have tofu here. I also got Thai tea, which was pretty good, but since they added so much ice, my drink became watered down by the time I drank half. This is a good place to go to for Thai in downtown Palo Alto, at least the best one in this area. I wouldn't say it is the best food but can satisfy that Thai food craving. However, it is on the pricier side but also you're in Palo Alto so the price point fits the area. My husband and I were actually supposed to eat somewhere else, but we stumbled upon this restaurant instead! The cocktails we ordered were very tasty and refreshing. Since I have a peanut allergy, our server was very kind and was able to accommodate me by ensuring peanuts on the Pad Thai would be on the side. When it came to the Satay Chicken, the chicken itself had so much flavor that I was ok with being unable to have the peanut sauce. It paired really well with the cucumber salad it was served with. I really don't think this place deserves anything below 4-5 stars. It's a bit on the pricier side, but the portions are generous and you truly get what you pay for. 3.5 STARS I never heard of Thaipoon so I was surprised to find it packed on the summer nights I've passed by, and then I saw a banner hanging outside "Voted Best Thai Restaurant" by Palo Alto Weekly's Best of...for several years in a row now. Immediately, I yelped Thaiphoon. *GASPS* Three stars?! Ok, this can mean several things: (1) Good food and terrible service (like many Asian restaurants). (2) Palo Altons have bad taste. (3) Haters. There's only one way to find out: Go for myself. After several visits, I can see why Thaiphoon has 3 stars. *On an authenticity standpoint, it's VERY Americanized - "spicy" = "mild", "Thai spicy" doesn't exist here. And, they serve sambal for hot sauce which isn't very hot. *The menu is really a hit or miss, and it may take several visits to find out what they do well. *Service is sloooooooooooow for Asian restaurant standards. BUT.... *The staff is super nice and cordial. They're not attentive but once you flag them down, my interactions with them have been always been positive. *FULL BAR!!!! Thaiphoon is in no way a destination restaurant but if you work in the area or are staying at the nearby The Epiphany/Nobu Hotel and looking for a decent, Americanized Thai meal with cheap booze, Thaiphoon is a fine option. Or, if you're like me...go to certain restaurants because of their dog-friendly outdoor seating and full bar, then Thaiphoon may exceed your expectations (given their low rating). I came here for a work dinner and we all were blown away. The service was fast and friendly. We were able to be seated right away. The interior had a cool vibe. In a cold winter with the power out for days, I retreated to a hotel to warm up. Thaiphoon said I could dine at their restaurant with my dog at the outside tables. The waiter turned on the nearby heater as soon as he came with the menu. The Yelp page doesn't say Thaiphoon is dog friendly, and some restaurants say they are, but really aren't. I'm grateful that we found a nice place to eat with good service and food. We were the only ones on the patio, and my dog was well-behaved throughout; she stays on the floor and is never fed from the table so isn't obnoxious at mealtime. I eat here occasionally, and it might help their business if they said they are dog-friendly, if they are. I'm a vegetarian, and stick to that part of the menu; can't comment on meat dishes, but drunken noodles, curries and stir fry veggies with mango and cashews are all delicious. read more

Came here for a team lunch on a weekday. I'm surprised this place has a 3 star because I think it's better than that! The food was reasonably priced and it came out fairly quick. The restaurant was pretty empty but we made a reservation anyways just to be safe. We ordered several dishes including the: Satay Chicken, Roti, Golden Shrimps and Veggie Spring Rolls for our appetizers. For my main, I got the Salmon Green Curry with Sticky Rice, Steamed Veggies and more Roti! I also got a Thai Iced Tea. For dessert I had the Sweet Sticky Rice with Fresh Mango. As you can tell it was quite a filling meal and I was full after that :) From being able to try all the food here, it was actually pretty decent and I probably would come back. This place is low key but is pretty good value and has decent tasting food! I really enjoyed the Roti and the peanut sauce and curry sauce that came with it - it was light and tasty and definitely tasted great dipped in anything. Other highlights include the Salmon Green Curry and the Satay Chicken, both were so tender and juicy and cooked perfectly. My Son ordered the Shrimp Fried rice and honestly it was the best I'd ever tasted. I ordered the Panang Curry with Beef and loved every bite. The combinations of flavors were delicious with the beef and veggies. Their Thai Iced Tea even tasted better than all the other restaurants I've been. The dishes I got were a hit or miss, and the prices are pretty steep for what they are. I enjoyed the tom yum soup - decent amount of mushrooms and the shrimp was very succulent and fresh. I also got the Popeyes favorite, which is a bunch of plain steamed veggies (including spinach, green beans and mushrooms) with a sweet peanut sauce on the side. The peanut sauce was definitely missing something (maybe a spicy kick to it?) and felt like diluted crunchy peanut butter. I didn't even take a picture of it because it was super ugly. Now, I knew what I was getting myself into by ordering this, but I think the presentation could have been way better and they could have really upped the sauce game (especially since it's plain steamed veggies). The Thai basil stir fry was average. It was flavorful but I've tasted comparable versions at other restaurants, and I don't think I got a big enough serving of the extra eggplant and broccoli I asked for. All in all an ok place to stop at if you're in the area and REALLY craving Thai food (as I was). I will say the staff is super pleasant and helpful, and he ambiance was pleasant. But the high prices really don't justify coming here when Thai food can be done better somewhere else at a more reasonable price. read more

Found my go-to Thai restaurant in NorCal. I found it over a decade ago, thanks to family, however, it was closed until very recently because of the pandemic. I haven't had Thai food in the last eighteen months! Correction: I haven't had Thai food that tasted good in the last eighteen months... in spite of trying out a couple of of recommendations in the Michelin guide. The green curry at Top Spice in Atlanta in November 2019 was the last amazing Thai meal that I had. Thaiphoon was recommended by my cousin and sister-in-law who lived in Palo Alto when my cousin got his MBA at Stanford in 2005 or 2006 and I've been coming here ever since. I'll take an endorsement by my family over an endorsement from a tire company (or anyone else who isn't blood related) any day! Their opinion is far more helpful than Michelin's. It's an alright place to grab lunch and it's nice that they offer the lunch specials on Saturday. They got pretty good business around lunchtime even on the weekend - so that was reassuring! Pros: Quick service, good comes out promptly and the presentation of the food as above acceptable. Complimentary soup and salad and rice was good. Place was very clean and nicely decorated. Could be a nice date place. Price was the usual, I wouldn't pay anymore for that stuff. Cons: The food wasn't great, but not bad. I've had better Thai food elsewhere. My rice was a bit on the mushy side like they added too much water. Food just wasn't too flavorful, but definitely spicy. We ordered samosas, chicken and eggplant, and mussamun beef curry. I recommend the samosas! The peanut sauce with the samosas is awesome - that's if you can handle spicy! read more

A good Thai place for lunch or dinner off the hustle and bustle of University Ave. I enjoy prime people watching while sitting on the "interior" patio, ensconced by the cozy bar and a cool waterfall feature. Really makes one feel transported to a different place. All the standard Thai goodies are here and a majority of the food is well spiced. I liked the fresh spring rolls with duck, although the amount of duck was small. the dipping sauce with them is great. Also loved the veggie fried house rice - it was great -, piping hot and flavorful with warm spices. The vegetables with green curry was good, if a bit too brothy and could use more veggies, but it seems to go well with a simple side of steamed jasmine rice, to sop up the slightly sweet and spicy green curry. Pad see ew was a-ok, but could have used less oil and more spice, and I did not like the chicken that was stir fried into it. So dry and blah - I picked all of that out. Next time I'll skip adding chicken. (And that's the reason I was hovering between 3 and 4 stars for this place). The tofu in the house fried rice was yummy, though, and I liked dipping that in the green curry sauce. My husband loved the spicy red chili sauce they offer on the side - kind of like siracha. Overall a solid choice and they could really turn up the dial if the food were served piping hot and the chicken was higher quality and not over cooked. read more

I mean as a waitress/waiter, I feel like it is your DUTY to know what's good and what isn't. Just saying. My friends and I decided to go with : Green Curry, Pad Thai with Chicken, and Spicy Eggplant with rice. This was during lunch time, so the lunch entrees come with rice and soup. The soup consisted of tofu and cabbage, and was tasty, though a little salty. The pad thai was a little too salty, and had too much sauce. My friend did not like her eggplant as she said it was flavorless. The lunch entrees were around 8 bucks each, and our total bill came up to around $30 minus tip. Over all, I'd say that I probably wouldn't return just because the food was only okay, and nothing special. My co-workers and I have been coming to this restaurant for a while now and I even recommended it to my boyfriend for his lunch plan with his friend. However, this review is based off today's experience. My co-workers came here around 12:15 for lunch and the place was packed. We sat outside and we were given our menus and waters. We quickly decided what we wanted and waited for the waiter to come back. It took us 10+ minutes to get one of the two waiters of the establishment. We ordered and it took 20+ minutes for the food to eventually arrive. My spicy basil chicken fried rice was cold! And warm in the center. It was awful, I just ate the warm spots and called it a day. A pro was that they let us split our bill. If we ever come back to this place, it will definitely be before the lunch rush begins. read more
