Great little neighborhood coffee shop. Good lattes and good selection of pastries and other goodies (bagels, a few flavored creme cheeses). I don't think I really need to say this, but it's WAY better than the Starbuck$ down the street and closer to my house. The guy who works the afternoons is my favorite. He always draws a little star in my latte with the foam. He once said "Man, I had this crazy dream last night that I came to work with no pants on. And then I realized I wasn't actually asleep." Give this place a break guys. This is a good, casual, neighborhood coffee place where you see a lot of familiar faces. All of the workers here are great people - Joey, Matt, Heather, Rachel (I'm sorry if I misspelled your name...), and etc. The coffee is superb, not like that Starbucks crap, and you end up making friends here. Feeling the effects of food coma after lunch one afternoon, I decided to check out this little spot across the street. I walked in groggy, the coma was setting in and I just wasn't functioning properly. I looked over the cashier for the coffee menu, and none was to be found. Slipping slowly into food induced oblivion, I asked the ultra hippie dude behind the counter "do you serve iced coffee?" It was as if I had somehow slapped Sir Hippie of the Coffee Beanery with my question...he gave me a "you-are-a-total-dumbass" answer and told me to look to my right because all the drinks they serve are up there and they even have iced choices (I could feel the silent "duh" from across the counter). How could I know?! I was deep, deep in the throws of food coma! How could this seemingly calm and gentle hippie creature turn so sour and cold on me? I thought all hippies were kind and gentle and understanding of those who were out of it?! Alas, this was not one of those hippies =( I humbly ordered my iced coffee and left feeling dejected and lame. The coffee was so good that I quickly forgot the sting of humiliation at the hands of Sir Hippie of the Coffee Beanery. I set out late that morning having squared off against the dense fog that threatened to keep me indoors. Marching deliberately down the hill, I came at first slowly upon the other adventurers. I like to imagine that our shared smiles indicate a kind of acknowledgement: "it is we who brave this wilderness." The inner sunset has a lovely crunching quality to the cement, which is peppered with sand from the underlying slope and soil from the small, square plots set aside for a line of trees. I arrived at a clearing in the fog set, as if by magic, at the corner of 7th and Irving where my usual haunt was winding down for the morning. The rush of people headed to work had thinned, leaving a single seat by the window ready for my intended task. I was writing a letter, you see. "Rachel, I will have a small chai please" (I was feeling exotic). Rachel was busy leading the newest employees in a whirl of activity and steamed milk. She always manages to be both busy and accommodating--a nice quality in a coffee shop if you ask me. Bustling but comfortable. Perfect for my letter. I sat down: "My dearest Emmalee, today my adventure began with a hazy wandering and a spiced chai. How ever shall I top it in the coming hours?" read more

I've been here twice now, and this place serves up the best iced mocha I've had so far. Their prices are great and their snacks look really good (although I haven't had a chance to try any yet). As others have mentioned the place itself is a bit small, but it's close enough to the park so you can get your caffeinated beverage of choice to go and cruise there to hang out...I guess you can also go sit at one of the tables in front of Starbucks, but you didn't hear that from me, m'kay? read more

This is my place. I mean, I don't own it, nor would I want to (because then I'd have to do all the work) but they KNOW coffee, man. They KNOW it. The basics: drip coffee- always fresh, always hot, always gooooood. None of that drippy brown water shit. It's REAL coffee- not chewy, mind you, just solid and does you right. I believe they have mostly Central American and Indonesian beans- may serve African from time to time, but regardless, the roast is just right - no burned over-achieving crap like Starbucks (who DID bring coffee to the masses, but their roasting is awful). Beanery roast is even and rich- and no, I don't know if those words generally work for coffee, but they do for me. Lattes- I stay away from milk because, well, it gives me scary tummy aches, but that's the thing- they make a soy latte here that is not overwhelmed by the espresso- they know the right combo of soy milk to espresso. And their other drinks are made well, too- I was a "barista" at some Southeastern coffee store mall chain, but we were so bored we took the time to make a good cappuccino, and the Beanery folks are REAL baristas, but don't overdo it. They don't need to prove their coffee-ness- they just do it (unlike some Seattle shops that seem to think that taking longer means it will be better- not so). You can also buy beans or ground coffee by the half pound and pound, and the prices are really great- around $8 for a pound of a medium roasted something. Bring your bag back and get a dime off the next pound- not huge, but a nice touch that does keep me coming back (among other reasons). The baristas are not overly chatty but friendly enough. Forrest, as someone else mentioned, makes a nice little heart design in the top of lattes and cappuccinos, and someone else makes a little paw print (avec milk, not paws). I prefer the paws, but Forrest has mad skeelz, regardless. This place is my favorite coffee place in the city, hands down. And the 7th Avenue (nee, Judah) is one tiny step above the 9th Avenue sister, due to it's location- it's out of the hubbub around the 9th/Judah intersection and is a little bit more chill. read more

Love that they have fair trade coffee and tea(Numi)! Lots of pretty good looking pastries shipped in from Semifreddi's. Black coffee is $1.65-2.15 and is self serve. There are 5 2-person tables inside and 4 2-person tables outside. Very quiet atmosphere with gentle music. Awkward seems like a strange adjective for a coffee shop, but that's all that comes to mind. The counter set up was weird, with the menu facing one way and the counters making an L-shape.. where to order? Ahh, confusion abounds before I even decide if I want coffee or tea. Then comes trying to find a seat... Being that there are like two chairs inside, that was kind of a problem, so I went outside, but alas it was cold. Came back inside, sat in a chair with no table. That was weird. Finally someone got up from their table and I stole their spot. Moving spots three times in one visit -- not a good sign. Finally, seated comfortably with a drink and a table, and I couldn't concentrate on the conversation I was having because the barista kept whistling. I know, right? And at any other time I would have found that totally endearing, but I was just so frazzled by this point, I couldn't handle it. I'm addicted to coffee. If I don't have a cup of joe a day, I enter complete psycho bitch mode and lose all sense of focus. My limbs quiver uncontrollably. It's a $2 per day drug that I must have. All this coffee drinking makes me somewhat of an expert when it comes to picking out good coffee drinks. With super-coffee shops like Starbucks and Pete's, where baristas crank out drinks a mile a minute, it's like no one knows how to make good espresso drinks. The milk foam usually looks like bubble bath on top of your drink. I've heard of the term "wash your mouth out with soap", but I never expected to think about it every time I get my morning beverage. Foam is my favorite part. Get that right and I'm sold! The little roaster that could gets it right. There is a woman at the espresso bar that makes a mean milk foam. Whatever the secret is, she knows it and makes the bubbles fine and creamy looking--just how you would find it in Europe. Save yourself the trouble of the long line at Starbucks and walk around the corner to this gem (snuggled right next to Arizmendi and the Mucky Duck Saloon, just in front of the 44 bus stop). This is a lovely little coffee spot in the inner sunset. The morning staff recognizes me and gets my double nonfat latte going as soon as I go in -- so even if there's a person or 2 ahead of me in line, I get my caffeine fast!. My lattes often come with little hearts or pawprint designs in the foam. Hey, it's a little thing, but it's a nice way to start the day. They have a variety of self-serve drip coffees which have always been fresh and tasty when I've gotten them. One star off only because the place is tiny and you can never rely on getting a seat here (although there seem to be a few regulars who do). But the size of the place is not really their fault, and for take-out coffee purposes this place is just fine. read more

This is my "other" favorite cafe (Beanery) but at a different location (like literally two blocks from the one on 9th Avenue). Same lovely cafe - good lattes - good bagels - minus the antique roaster at this location. As to how I'd decide which one to go to...is highly dependent upon the time of the day. I'd go to the one on 9th Avenue in the morning when the sun rises in the east till about 1pm or so, then I would prefer to go to the one on Irving/7th Ave. when the sun starting to slowly set in the west. I hope you'd find this handy dandy sunrise/sunset time-telling tip helpful especially for people like me who prefer to sit outside and enjoy the rare sunshine that the sunset district brings. Despite the lack of sunny days compared to the Mission District, I still love this neighborhood and especially this cafe! read more

This review is 12 year too late. I used to live in the neighborhood and hit the beanery at least once a day. I moved to NOPA 6 months ago and NOPA has some amazing coffee places but nothing comes close to the beanery It's quintessential neighborhood cafe where everyone knows your name and you get to meet your neighbors. The coffee is excellent. i still come few times a month to stock up on beans. Try their Guatemala Antigua it's probably the bets coffee out there an yes I have tried Blue bottle, sightglass, philz etc. read more

Cute coffee shop! Their drinks are pretty good and they roast the beans themselves! My husband wasn't a fan of their straight espresso, but we both enjoy the espresso-based drinks. Great when it's a sunny day 'cause then you can grab one of the tables outside, soak in the sun (with your sunblock on, of course) and do your thing as you casually people-watch every now and then. I like coffee. No, scratch that-I love coffee. That being said, I must have a hell of a tolerance for caffeine 'cause the Depth Shot I got here did absolutely nothing for me. I like the combination of coffee and espresso because it gets the job done but the mocha blend coffee with the shot didn't help me perk up. I was kind of disappointed to say the least but that's not why I'm giving this place 3 stars. I noticed our barista was smoking outside before coming in to take my order and make my coffee, which is not an issue with me. The fact that I didn't see her wash her hands or even hear the water getting turned on made me a little wary of the sanitation practices overall. I did also notice that there was a fly in their bakery case and that immediately turned me off their sweets. On the plus side though, there's no line (I wonder why?) and there's usually a couple parking spots in the usually busy neighborhood. I'm now at a toss up between this place and Starbucks. Regardless of the skeevy feeling, I still want to give this place another chance 'cause it's a smaller place with a more local feel. read more

Nice cozy neighborhood cafe on the corner of a busy intersection. It's a great place to sit and read, or people-watch when it's nice outside. The barista, I think his name is Forrest, is friendly and makes a lovely mocha. One time he didn't have any more whipped cream (nooo), but he made a heart out of the foam on top, which was really sweet. Also, the lemon bars here are delicious. If that's too sweet for your sweet tooth, go for a lemon poppyseed cookie. read more

Well after walking by the wonderful smells of Arizmendi Bakery, my senses were a bit too overwhelmed to try any of their coffee. I ordered a tall glass of whole milk, which wasn't as cold as I would have liked, and my friend a mostly all foam soy latte. Meh. It had some cute decor, with an old roaster in the place and tables filled with coffee beans. Nice staff. Can't say I'll be back, as I really don't drink coffee anyway, but I'm all about Fair Trade/Organic Coffee houses and wouldn't not recommend this place to someone. read more

I usually grab coffee from this place when I need it to fuel me through a 7am hourlong commute to Mountain View from SF. It's lovely and quiet at 6am, with crisp Bach usually playing in the early darkness. Servers are usually not so harried and generally more pleasant at this early hour -- arrive after 7am, when the lines are beginning to form... and the goodwill seems to diminish somewhat. For standard plain coffee - grab a cup and fill up from the thermoses at the counter nearest to the door. Place your latte, cappucino, espresso orders with the barrista in the back. There's a water bowl for puppies out front, and on occasion, your well-behaved tethered furry friend will receive a cookie from the servers. read more

The taste was exactly the same as I had remembered it before my coffee-tized palate could recognize a good roast. Ordered a cappuccino - coffee was burnt and they just put a spoonful of frothed milk on top. Would not return though they have some committed regulars. So I needed a good coffee shop early on a Sunday morning to study. I walked by the Beanery on 9th, but it seemed too crowded, so I ended up here. I just had a latte and thought it may have been too milky (next time I might get a double). It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. This review is not for the coffee or food but for the ambiance and service. Service Really great! Friendly and fast! Ambiance Also really great. Came here for a quick business meeting with a colleague. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the size of this location is very cozy, compared to the 9th Ave. location. Seating is more conversation oriented than for working, although there is free wifi. The reason for my 3 star rating is the coffee. I consider myself a coffee tasting hobbyist and wasn't at all satisfied with the Roasters Blend drip coffee. You'll experience a roasted and burnt flavor profile that lines up better with a french roast. But here, it went one step beyond a french roast with an overpowering taste that's best described as ashy and acrid, slightly skunky. It had a very heavy body and coating. The ending left a dirty aftertaste. And there was a notable amount sludge that I would only expect from French Press style brewing. Some people prefer this type of taste. I am not one of them. The closest I can compare it to is to the packaged and pre-ground French Roast Classic coffee from Peerless Coffee. I feel terrible writing this review because I absolutely want to support local roasters. But there's a problem here between the over-roasting and the under-brewing that left me disappointed. However, I'll be back to try a different roast next time. Look for an updated review soon! read more

Love this place. The coffee beans are the real deal. Every once in awhile I like some pansy ass coffee from Ritual/Four Barrel but if you want a REAL cup of coffee, get their Mocha Java beans. There is a chocolate flavor in there that just gives it an extra richness. We also just got the organic Guatemalan beans and they are also fantastic. Joe is the nicest guy and Rachel is a killer barista. These guys make the best cappuccinos I have ever had. Creamy delicious foam piled high. Love you guys! read more

The Owner is bright friendly and fun! The Mocha Java Coffee is delicious and strong as can be. There's a cup discount if you bring your own, that makes your coffee just 1.40 And there's god fast internet from the Fireside bar across the street. The pastries are yummy. went in, got coffee, realized that i have no change - the guy at the counter says, "no problem - just pay me later." i replied, "I'll come back tomorrow," to which the guy responds, "sure." The west is the best, when it comes to coffee, right? We have Starbucks, Peets, Coffee People, Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Philz, Equator, and more every month. Not too many places stay small and local, though, roasting in small batches and concerned with keeping quality high and prices low. Must be tempting to expand, make more money and get everyone talking about how great you are, even though you are no longer as good as your reputation would warrant. That's why I love, love, love the Beanery, and this location best of all. If you thought dark roast had to be bitter, try the French Roast here. It's not burned or astringent at all, just really, really rich and smooth and full of about a million subtle flavors. You can enjoy a good cup of hot deliciousness here or take home a pound and drink it all morning, like I do. Thank me now or thank me later. You're welcome. And you know how some places fake that friendly environment? Asking your name only to get your order out faster, and engaging in idiotic small talk like they really, really like you. But when you come back and get a refill, they start all over - same idiotic small talk, same conversation. You weren't special. Here, it's different. I'll go every week for a while, and then go out of town for months. When I return, Heather remembers not only my name, but my preferred, picky blend, and what grind I get. I'm not talkative, but she's so pleasant and calm that she makes me feel comfortable. Nothing fake about her, the coffee, any of it. To me, this location has the best vibe (less tourists, more UCSF interns studying, quiet yet not too full or too empty). This is what a coffee shop should be, and is.
