I went to join my friend studying here, and right as I sat down of the baristas ( a man) came up to my friend and informed her very loudly she must buy something if she wants to stay and that she did this before. I understand it's a business and my intent is always to buy something at a coffee place before sitting, my friend was humiliated, everyone stared. I felt unwelcome and both my friend and I had panic attacks. my issue isn't with the fact one must buy something before working at the cafe, it was how it was told. Honestly, I came here because I heard they have good cold brew and it was pretty cheap.. So my friend and I came on a nice day for some nice cold brew before we head to studying. It was perfect because there was no line but I'm not sure it that's a good thing.. any-who, the price for a cold brew is the same at any other cafes and I was kind of bummed out how it was too watery for my liking, didn't really have that strong coffee taste. Best coffee beans in SF: Organic French. Nothing else comes close. They roast everyday, so it's always fresh.

I found that anything organic tastes worse and of course, costs more... have you noticed that too? Organic chicken: dry Organic vegetables: tiny Organic soup: bland MEH, gimme chemicals!! But the organic French Roast here was great - smooth and full bodied. It's no Philz, but I'm not complaining when I can have my Good Earth froyo from next door, my pizza from Arizmendi, AND my coffee. read more

Beanery is a good ol friendly neighborhood joint for a coffee. The coffee and staff are pretty good! I'm a fan of the soy mocha latte ($3.45 for a small single shot) or the iced drinks ~$4. The price is about right for coffee - on par with chains like Starbucks and Peet's. The great vibe from the staff and decent coffee can't take away from the small space of Beanery. It's not the best place to bring a book and read because there really isn't much space at all. You get a lot of hustle and bustle of people running in and out. So if you're looking for a coffee house to work in, this isn't your best choice. Also - they don't take card, which can be kind of tough in our plastic world. read more

I had to be at work in an hour and I was feeling slightly tipsy from the three glasses of Chardonnay I had with my sushi. I thought it would be wise to get some caffeine in my bloodstream to counteract the alcohol levels I have in there. So convenient to have this coffe shop a block away from Ten Sushi. I got the Roasted Blend drip to go, along with a chocolate croissant (I needed dessert, since we had to leave in the middle of the white elephant gift exchange so I can be at work on time!!!) The coffee hit the spot. It was light bodied and only needed a splash of half and half to give it creaminess. The croissant could've used a little more butter though. It was very frothy at the top and had enough sweetness and cocoa flavor where I didn't need to add any type of sweetener. My friend ordered a double cappuccino and his cup's froth looked like fresh snow. It was very amusing. The caffeine didn't seem very strong, but we both still enjoyed our cup. Service was decent. Answered my question. Not rude but not really friendly either. Wouldn't go out of my way to come here but wouldn't mind stopping by if I'm in the area and needed a caffeine fix. read more

The first consideration when going to the Beanery is: which Beanery? The one at 9th and Irving has twice the reviews (and twice the decoration budget, apparently), plus proximity to Arizmendi. But the one at 7th and Irving has Megan W and Random J's approval, a lot less crowds, plus proximity to my house. So it really depends on whether I want baked goods (I should point out that they have good scones and muffins here, but not good enough to forego the 2-block walk to AB). How's the coffee? I won't lie, I'd still like to see Inner Sunset get a place of Cafe Bello caliber, but barring that, Beanery's brew is as good as you could ask for. And you can even add blackberry syrup. read more

Tried the latte here and was disappointed. Maybe I expected too much after reading the great reviews about The Beanery, but I thought it was weak and lacked any depth of flavor. Didn't taste much different from what I make at home, which is basically brewed coffee with some milk added - it's not even espresso! Basically, I didn't feel it was worth my money. Service was chilly. Maybe because I'm only a college student? Or Asian? Maybe they were just having a bad day. Nevertheless, I didn't feel very welcome here. The baristas were friendly enough, but I was literally table jacked by a guy who walked in after me. He threw his newspaper down on the table I sat at like he owned the place and then sat down. My friend and I kind of just looked at each other dumbfoundedly before migrating to one of their other 4 tables. I ordered an Americano...and it was just alright. Given that Americanos are either prepared with espresso poured into hot water (or vice versa), I did expect the flavor to be tempered a bit...but overall it was just watery. Hmm. read more

Not really my cup of coffee, but a-ok. Really nice decor, and it looks like they roast their own coffee on occasion (huge roaster and permit to use it in the front). Ambiance is attractive, and if I wanted to hang out (assuming there was an open space), this might be nice. From a drinks perspective, I'll admit that I'm not that knowledgeable about the ins and outs, hows and wheres. But I know what I like, and the mocha has a slight burnt water taste that I am always wary of in my coffee. Will I be back? Probably not. But I'll look inside and smile. read more

Cute little coffee stop. Being immediately immersed in the fine aromas here when you walk in is a great feeling. Chairs and tables all alongside the wall in here will be seating happy and satisfied customers. Many are just enjoying that day and reading newspapers, others are catching up, others are studying, but whatever you are doing in a coffee shop, the Beanery is the perfect place to do it. Hot chocolate and coffee come out in large mugs and they have a fun assortment of bakery goods to offer. Being on the corner of 9th street is great for people watching, too! Honestly have to say ever since I moved to San Francisco, I've become a coffee person. This was my first time visiting the Beanery and I really enjoyed the scenery. This location was located in a cozy little spot around a intersection. It was a plus to enjoy a cup of joe while enjoying the San Francisco lifestyle. One odd thing I didn't like was that they have a $4 limit per transaction and in this given day. I don't really carry cash anymore. I had to add another item to meet the limit. A nice little coffee shop. I got to the chiropractor's neighborhood an hour early this evening, and rather than visit another Starbucks I decided to patronize a really local business. Coffee before chiropractic again, I'm such a bad boy. But I love it! The back of the store was crammed with shelving and the steam machine, giving the place a country store feeling. Cramming all the gear in the back opened up space in the front, though, for four tables inside and three tables outside. Space enough for the inevitable resident Mac user, and for the rest of us. The three tables outside were perfect for smoking, sniffing acetone from the nail shop next door, or people watching. It was a little chilly, but some interesting people happened by, and I was pleased to watch Venus appear in the twilight to the west. The coffee was all right. I ordered a double nonfat latte, and was rewarded with a robust flavor that reminded me of Peets. They had an assortment of pastries, very similar to the chain coffee shops, as well. OK, if the coffee was mainly warm milk, I guess I wasn't such a bad boy after all. read more

Ethiopian! I was with a Nicaraguan guy having a coffee break here. He was telling me about how bad the Sandinistas, made a deal with Chinese to built canal, but did not work because local Nicaraguan Indians don't want to deal with them. He also told me that coffee that Nicaraguan has is very very strong. He almost having a heart attack after drinking the coffee. Btw, I forgot to ask him about is there any Chinatown in Nicaragua. If you're looking to get coffee, tea or me (scratch out the last one!), pastries, juices and other coffee shop fare that are no-nonsense and sans frills, in a setting that is casual, neighborhoody, friendly, quiet, laid back, clean and always smelling of the aroma of freshly ground coffee... then head to The Beanery! They have a decent selection of coffee and teas and also freshly ground coffee which is a treat. My default is the half decaf and whenever I'm here, I end up running into my neighbors and chatting folks up which really gives this place a community feel. Great staff, great seating outside and a general overall good vibe whenever I am here. (If you see me some time, say hi... I don't bite unless I get "tude"). There is its sister cafe on 9th and Irving as well but hell! this place is a block from my house so I drag my lazy ass here! So we were having food coma after lots of dim sum and sleepwalking our way through Irving when the aroma comes through our noses like an alarm clock and I could almost taste it just from smelling the roasting from outside. I literally walked backwards as I passed by the cafe. The cappuccino was great! They have a good and common selection of beans and I like the beans glass top tables. It's a tiny little scrap of a coffee shop, kind of hidden in a nook and overpowered by a nail salon. Yes, it's small and not going to blow your mind with all kinds of brewed to order wifi coffee shop 2.0ness, but overall, I think it's a great little place. It's like the prototypical coffee shop (dark wood paneling, freshly-roasted and ground beans, flyers for dance classes at local community centers), but on a cute little scale. And they have tables outside which gives it a little more capacity, and presumably so people can sit outside with dogs and drink coffee and read the paper and eat scones all day and generally look neighborhood-y. (Who are those people? What do they do for income? How can I get that job?) Huge selection of tea, and pretty good coffee in four different blend options. Always arriving early for work, i needed to find a spot where i could kill time in the morning... and being right down the block this place showed me some love. Wouldn't you know it? My favorite coffee place in Alameda suddenly became my favorite coffee place in SF too...! (again, for a guy who doesn't drink coffee) Like in my review for the Alameda Beanery, this place gives you that welcome feeling without that 'elite coffee house' person feeling... I'm just a normal guy who wants to enjoy a bagel and water, and this place makes me feel good. It's small, also, which is probably a plus since i don't like a lot of traffic while i read my newspaper. They have outside seating for people watching, too. The guy who runs this place in the morning is extremely friendly and always acts like he remembers you. Overall i think this is a great little spot in the lower sunset with good bagels and extra friendly service! read more

Best coffee in San Francisco, sorry Blue Bottle. Or actually, I'm not sorry but you should be. Blue Bottle isn't shy about charging outrageous prices for pretty good beans. The Beanery, on the other hand, stopped selling their magnificent Kenyan beans when the price became too steep. Since their Kenyan beans are the best coffee I've ever tasted, and I have tasted more than most people, being a previous coffee buyer, I would have paid whatever they'd asked. But you gotta love a business with values as good as their beans. Heather, one of the managers, mentioned to me that they might be getting the Kenyan back, at least for a short time. She asked me if I'd like to be notified. I gave her my card but - hey - who does that? I didn't think about it again. Until she actually called. Again, who does that? I bought about five pounds and shared it with every coffee drinker I knew, and every one of them said it was unbelievable. They told me this weeks later - that's how long they remembered how good it was. They still talk about it and complain that nothing they can buy locally compares to it. No kidding. This location is just a block closer to UC, smaller, and with a quiet, studious ambience. There are less tourists and less sun on hot days (when we get hot days - and you can distinguish the locals because we are the squinting and sneezing ones). Good, real, thoughtful, interesting people work here. Please treat them with respect. They make my world a better place. read more

No matter how much evidence arises saying that there are benefits to drinking coffee I must say that I beg to differ. However, I sometimes sneak a sip from a friend and now - due to my appreciation for coffee from the beanery - I sneak whole cups. Damn coffee is addicting. I get it with soy and its so deliciously sweet and smooth. Sometimes if you get a singing tall man making your drinks he will not only serenade you but will put a pretty pic in your drink. I was going to give this place two stars, but I think I'm really wanting 2.5 stars, so it seems I'll round up. I met a friend here, who studies at this place all day long (for that, I rounded up--kudos to the beanery for allowing long study sessions) and I was sad to see how stiff and hard and uncomfortable the seating was. I could forgive this, if the coffee were any good. Let me say I have an enormously high standard for coffee. Yes, I know everyone says this...but both my parents are European, I grew up drinking espresso made the "right way" and american coffee needs only to not taste like bile or burnt to a crisp beans that will churn in my stomach for hours. I've long given up finding a decent espresso made by non-European hands with a push button machine (hence, my thousasnd dollar Pavoni at home) but my "regular coffee" shouldn't need to be doused in 1 part milk and 6 tablespoons of sugar to mask the bitter. I'd go back, because they were nice, but I'll stick to tea, and not sit down...in and out. That's what this place would be for me. If you don't mind the hard-ass seats, and a cup full of bitter, this may be the place for you. read more
