This is a great place for breakfast. The coffee is good, the server is super nice. The omelet was cooked perfectly as was the bacon. My friend got the biscuits and gravy, and he loved them. They are really good (I sneaked a bite of two). My only complaint is the music. Very old and annoying. I usually do not mind this genre of music so much, but the majority of the customers in here are younger. It is also really loud. Otherwise, the environment is nice and clean. read more

Have been to this location.many times Over the last several years-sometimes almost weekly. Recently I have had several instances where substations have been a real challenge. Order the same thing each time I go. Bacon and cheddar Omelette, Biscuit and I request to sub gravy in place of potatoes. Sometimes I am told there will be an up charge. Other times I get a side of gravy with no up charge. Never mind the fact it's the same price for both items on the menu. Finally the last time I went after visiting with a manager I was told " we don't have a button on our screen for Substituting Gravy" imagine that a place where Biscuits are everywhere. Big Biscuit is always the first choice of my wife and I when it comes to breakfast. The quality is relatively consistent. I have gotten some mis-steps when it comes to hashbrowns. I prefer mine extra crispy. I don't always get them when I order it here, but those can be forgiven. What is still the go-to are the biscuits and gravy. Wow! Just really good. I grew up eating biscuits and gravy and Big Biscuit does not disappoint. My wife loves the different takes on Eggs Benedict here, particularly the Country Benedict. The issue is, we often end up deciding to go here on a Sunday. Weekends are super busy here. The parking lot is full, at least up close, and the wait can take a while. The weekend breakfast rush is no joke here, especially Sundays. Sunday after church breakfast is super super busy. Either come early or prepare to wait. People come with large groups, like more than 4, often and they take their time. It's a family gathering and they want to enjoy this great food. You have been warned. Bottom line, it's great food, filling and plentiful. You will be waiting if you come at the wrong time. Large groups are welcome, but again, you will be waiting. Is it worth the wait? We have been coming here two-three times a month on weekends for breakfast for about five years now and the place has changed management again but this time it's horrible. The new manager, Sam, is not customer friendly nor is he nice to his staff. Twice now I've seen him either yelling or being rude to his staff. We know some of the servers from being frequent customers and they just don't seem happy anymore like they used to be. My husbands food came out cold, they took it back but when our server tried to give us a discount because of the cold food and the wait he was rude and said no. He ended up taking a drink off our bill. This is not how you treat customers especially returning customers. Also I never see him treating the male staff bad just the females. I have no idea what his problem is but he needs to go. This location will needs better management. read more

My boyfriend and I came here a couple of weeks ago to try The Big Biscuit; as I was looking from a breakfast location closer to home. I've gotta say their biscuits are pretty damn big (OMG what a ton of food). I ordered the country benedict and my man ordered the Kansas City omelet with biscuits and gravy on the side. Holy hell the portions are massive - they aren't lying when they call themselves "The Big Biscuit." Now, while the portions were massive I didn't feel that the food was all that much to rave about. Everything was good, but not much to write home about. My only real complaint is that the gravy...just didn't have the kick that I was looking for -- the flavor was there but there wasn't that extra oomph that sometimes you want to see in food. So the food was decent, and the service, well while our waitress was friendly things seemed to be moving a little big slow. It appeared that she got distracted a few times while on her way to bring coffee for us...not entirely her fault. But overall, if felt more like the staff was socializing the entirety of our time there and not all that invested in the customers. Overall a decent experience, but not entirely sure how often I'll be back. Big biscuits aside there wasn't a whole lot that stood out to make it a memorable morning meal. read more

I won't be back. I checked in online to avoid waiting inside the restaurant--asked for 15-30 minute window for arrival. When I arrived, about 25 min. Later, I checked in with the host. I was told it would be 5 minutes. 3 walk-in customers were seated in a row. As I was waiting, a biker-looking couple chose not to wear face masks--and walked inside restaurant without masks. No one reminded them of mask mandate (sign was clearly posted outside). I asked the host if they were enforcing the mandate, he replied, "Yes." I asked if he would please remind the couple to wear masks (I was still waiting in the waiting area--near them). No attempt was ever made. After 10 more minutes, I finally asked to be seated. I asked my server to remind them about masks...still no effort. Didn't see a manager on the floor. Very concerning, no effort was made!! My food was barely average. Coffee was very bitter, not hot. Food was lukewarm. Service was good, but food was really sub-par. Nothing about the food or atmosphere would cause me to return, let alone wait an hour, with unmasked patrons. If I hadn't planned to meet my mom, I would have left. Terrible experience--sad, since first time out for breakfast since March, 2020. First impressions are everything. Step it up!! read more

Breakfast is one of those meals that I am ready for anytime of the day and/or night. Tooling down Shawnee Mission Parkway, I see a small flag like sign stating " Breakfast". I didn't know that a Big Biscuit had went in where CiCi's Pizza had been. Being a former east sider, I knew about the Biscuit on 40 Highway in Independence, but had never thought about going till I saw it featured on "Check Please". So I was thrilled I could try the place without the cross town journey. Decor is down to earth, with an obvious Kansas flair..Pictures on the wall are all wheat fields, barns, windmills and old Johnson county snapshots of things gone by. Menu is 80% breakfast related, with a sandwich, lunch item and salad page on the backpage. But I was there for the breakfast experience, so I didn't browse the menu too much. Pancakes, waffles, omelets, scramble skillets, and of course biscuits and gravy. My southern heritage was elated that the offered grits on the side...I haven't had good girts since my last trip to Carolina. I ordered the Country Benedict, which was was an open-face biscuit with sausage patties, scrambled eggs, smothered in gravy. Country style potato chunks, too My cholesterol jumped just looking at the platter that hit the table. Grits in a small bowl to accompany. My Co-diner got the "Big Breakfast" that included 2 pancakes, 2 sausage pattys, 2 bacon strips, 2 eggs, and hash browns, Pancakes were plate size, a meal by themselves. We both agreed that the scrambled eggs must be a liquid variety, and gravy seemed to be a mix. The best things we encountered here was the pancakes, and the country potatoes, fried with a bit of seasoning. Everything else seemed to be....well....institutionalized. By that I mean what you might get at a hospital or school cafeteria. The grits that I was so excited about, I'm sure came from an instant envelope. My biscuit was a little hard around the edges like it had matured. Sausage was dry and had a little too much red pepper flakes inside. Service was on the money, our waitress made several revisits and kept our coffee urn filled. I was a little underwhelmed with our food. I love biscuits (and gravy). I saw the big red sign that said, "The Big Biscuit," and I knew I had to try this place. I had never heard of the restaurant before, but it is a chain from the Missouri side serving breakfast and lunch. It has a diner feel to it, but in a much cleaner, better laid out way. When you walk in, they have very cool black and whites of the turn of the century happenings in the area. I thought it was a nice touch. The menu is decent sized for having breakfast and lunch only, with so many omelet and pancakes options, I felt excited. I ordered their ever popular half order of biscuits and gravy and my fiance and I shared a side of fruit. The biscuit was delicious. It tasted homemade, buttery, and flaky. It was indeed a big biscuit. The gravy was just OK to me. It didn't wow me at all, but it was still decent. Not only did it not taste homemade, it was not spicy at all. And there were not actual chunks of sausage in it at all. It kind of reminded me of a powdered version that you can make at home. So the sauce wasn't very saucy. The other issue I had was with the fruit bowl. It had strawberries, bananas, grapes, and blueberries. All were pretty good, except the blueberries. They were obviously frozen blueberries because they had a mighty tough outer layer on them. If you are going to serve fruit, please serve fresh fruit. Just saying, I don't feel like paying $4 for a side of fruit if it's not even fresh. Overall, I give four stars for service, friendliness, speed of service, and decent food. I would say it's much better than First Watch, but they need to up their gravy in a hurry. read more

The biscuits WERE pretty tasty, and even though another reviewer said the gravy tasted like a mix, I was pretty satisfied. There were definitely chunks of sausage in my gravy. The other guests got omelets, pancakes, eggs, etc. Everyone was happy with breakfast. The manager/owner? came and checked to see how everything was. There weren't too many people in the restaurant besides us. We went on Easter morning, so people may just not have been out of church yet. As a lover of breakfast this new addition to Johnson County quickly made it to the top of my list of "must try" eateries so we took a long-weekend and treated ourselves to an unhurried breakfast at this breakfast & lunch restaurant. First Impression: The Big Biscuit suited our laid back family style with casual decor that had an almost country feel. The roomy booths made for a relaxing meal and the cream and brown decor was not overstated. Beautifully framed vintage photos from turn-of-the-century JohnsonCounty lined the walls. The restaurant was very clean as were the "facilities". The walls did seem just a tad stark, but that hardly seems worth mentioning in light of all that The Big Biscuit has going for it. The Service: The server was very prompt, friendly and attentive, but didn't hover. She struck the right balance of service and letting us enjoy our breakfast, which is not an easy thing to do. The Food: The menu is extensive and includes several biscuit platters, eggs any way and with just about anything you could want, nine kinds of omelettes, five kinds of scrambles, ten varieties of pancakes, four versions of French toast and seven different waffles. Throw in the à la carte stuff and you have a menu that any diner would be proud to serve. We treated my dad to breakfast and each of us ordered something different, then shared. The portions are very generous and you will be asking for a box. Hubby had the Full Biscuits & Gravy. I would go for the biscuits alone. They are large, light, flaky and delicious with just a dab of butter. The sausage gravy was smooth and velvety, not too peppery and would have made a flip-flop edible. I gobbled up The Big Scramble, which is sort of all the yummy things about breakfast tossed together. This one included ham, sausage, mushrooms, onions & cheddar with three eggs, a biscuit and home fries. My dad had the traditional two eggs, basted with hashbrowns & bacon. His eggs were perfectly cooked. Our Lovebug ordered a waffle, which he declared, "Spectacular!" The Price: The portion size and service, combined with a very reasonable price make The Big Biscuit the best dining addition to the Shawnee area in years. Overall: We left The Big Biscuit feeling as if we'd found our new favorite breakfast spot. We'll be heading back. Soon. The Big Biscuit earns five out of five spoons. I swore I'd never come back here. I saw an employment ad on craigslist for The Big Biscuit seeking managers. The way the ad pimped their business philosophies and bragged of upcoming expansion, I second guessed myself and thought perhaps the business has made positive strides in their daily operations. So, we went back... The seating and service processes were definitely improved from our previous attempts, although the staff is a motley crew. I don't expect super models everywhere I go, and I'm not saying these folks are ugly or anything. It's something you have to see to understand. The phrase "a bit off" describes it best. The food was better than the first visit, but that's not saying much considering how bad it was last time. I had the Pigs in A Blanket and she had the Country Benedict. Everything was cooked ok, the presentation was adequate, and it all came out quickly. The food just isn't that good. The product was standard breakfast selection mass distributed by the local food warehouse distributor. There was absolutely nothing special about what we got. It put my tastebuds to sleep. The coffee...hmmmmm. Maybe I was wrong in my original review. Maybe it wasn't burnt. Maybe it's just rot gut coffee. It has a bitter charcoal flavor to the finish. I too love breakfast joints. I know that there is a Big Biscuit in Blue Springs and most of the locals that I know do not think too highly of it. I figured this one may be different so I thought I would try it. To begin, I enjoy the flavored creamers that both IHOP and First Watch offer. They do not have that choice here. The coffee was burnt and lacked flavor. The staff was friendly enough, but lacked attention to detail. It gets pretty annoying having to flag down your waiter/waitress. I prefer the ones that are on it before you can think of it. I'm a big tipper so I weigh things like that heavily. It could've just been our waitress for the day. Biscuits and gravy are the way to go. This place is awesome for breakfast. Food portions are large. I tried the southern Eggs Benedict (biscuits, eggs, sausage, and gravy stacked). I was in heaven but couldn't finish it. I normally don't like gravy on my eggs but decided to let it slide this time and I am so glad I did. The staff is hit or miss. We had a younger server that was more than accommodating but we watched other tables waiting for refills, food, and checks that seemed highly agitated. I am not sure how our sever pushed us to the front but we did get our food fast and watched others impatiently waiting that ordered well before we did.
