Honestly, the overall experience was disappointing, although the service and food were fair. Our main server didn't seem overly friendly, in fact, almost too businesslike. It's as if they know the 20% tip is automatically included in the bill, perhaps, not sure? Food was good, but definitely not at par for the cost, in my opinion. $7 for whipped butter, bread was not warm; and didn't seem freshly made as it was a bit dry. My steak dinner was served lukewarm; not worth sending back, but for $50+, it was disappointing. The room itself was extremely dark, nothing to brag about, no candlelit tables & music sound track needs updating. We came for the Dunedin Restaurant Week menu, which was a 6 course prix fixe menu with a choice of entree. It was absolutely phenomenal. My entree choice was the sea bass! It absolutely melted in your mouth. The entree of my guest was the duck - she could not stop talking about how good it was. She compared it to filet mignon. If you are looking for a phenomenal, intimate experience - there's nothing better than Black Pearl. Very nice restaurant with good food and a great staff. I had the pork belly, the lobster risotto, and the bananas foster and all were very good. The atmosphere is a little on the louder side given the size of the restaurant but not too loud where you couldn't hold a private conversation. The restaurant is upscale and definitely requires an outfit better than shorts and t-shirts or jeans but is worth dressing up a little since they are trying to be fancy. My husband got the Lobster Risotto, despite the fact the doesn't usually care for lobster or risotto. I wasn't able to taste it due to my lobster allergy, but it smelled exquisite. He said it was one of the best dishes he ever ate. We shared a bottle of Chateneuf de Pape and it was an excellent pairing with the rich flavors of our meal. Since it was my birthday, I got to choose dessert. I chose the Black Pearl ice cream, a homemade licorice ice cream with cinnamon churro. The ice cream was wonderfully licorice-y, creamy and smooth. Intrusive and noisy environment, not a nice and quiet experience. We had dinner. The food was above average, but what could be expected. What I have a complaint about is the service and the ambiance in the restaurant. We went there to celebrate a special occasion and be ourselves in what should be a high en private and quiet environment, but that definitely failed. The food was about average of what could be expected in a place like this. The primary complaint is about the intrusive service and the ambiance in the restaurant. The wait staff, is extremely intrusive and annoying. I know they're trying to do their best to cater for our wishes and give us the best service, however it was just way too much with their constant intrusive interruptions and disturbance of our conversation. Even when we were enjoying our entree we couldn't even get 10-15 minutes time for ourselves to enjoy that without being disturbed by a waiter showing the dessert menu - super annoying. On top of all this a loud and obnoxious large group of people came in, a large table in the middle was booked for 12-14 people, even though it says on their website that groups of max 10 people can be accomodated. This happened in the middle of our dinner and totally ruined the quiet ambiance, and since the restaurant is a very small place no-one could hear a word except their loud talk, which left us with a feeling to get out of there as soon as possible. All in all not a very nice and quiet dinner and evening I reached out to the restaurant with this feedback, but they didn't care to come back to me. My wife and I used to frequent this location about once every other month. We had a couple of average meals and had not eaten here in probably two years. Just ate there a week ago and must say that things are back to their old glory days. The venue is still beautiful inside - small but romantic. The food from start to finish was outstanding. They still have the pork belly appetizer, which is amazing, my wife had the filet, which was perfectly cooked. I had the pasta, Bolognese, which I did not expect upon arrival, but blew me away. We finished with the apple tart, which was a staple for us, and it also was on point. Shouldn't leave out the warm poppy seed dressing for the house salad, which is outstanding and different. My husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary here yesterday and we can't even begin to describe the amazing experience that we had. Upon arrival you open the doors to a dark exterior and find yourself completely immersed into a portal leading you to the most romantic restaurant you can find. From start to finish the night was perfect. We had the pleasure of having Sean guide us to one of the best meals of our life. We began with the lobster risotto which is not only the best risotto we have ever had but quite possibly one of the best things we've tasted in years, And my husband doesn't even eat seafood. The pork belly appetizer is a must and the squash soup was perfectly balanced. For entrees we had the filet which was cooked to perfection and my husband ordered the lamb which too was amazing. We ended the meal with the tarte and the white chocolate cake. I am seven months pregnant and desserts are my absolute favorite so believe me when I tell you although both were fantastic the white chocolate cake was out of this world. We get to eat at some amazing restaurants around the world. So imagine our surprise when we found one of our favorite restaurants in the small town of Dunedin. If you're looking for the pearl in a sea of mediocre dining experiences in the greater Clearwater area, this should clearly be on your menu. Located in the cute downtown area of Dunedin, The Black Pearl is unassuming. You enter in a small, darkly lit dining room with about 12-14 tables (9 of which are booths). It's cozy and romantic without ever feeling claustrophobic. Of course we asked for a booth and were politely turned down by the very kind host and sommelier, rambling something about the computer "algorithm" wouldn't allow him to seat us in a booth. Annoying, but we said fine and were the only ones seated in the middle of the restaurant. He then assuaged our small annoyance with complimentary glasses of champagne -- ah, that makes it go down easier. What service! Of course a place with a sommelier has an amazing wine list. And while he didn't have the bottle we initially wanted, he recommended a similar bottle which turned out to be amazing. Bread was warm and delicious, as were the salads. I had the duck and my wife had an amazing, perfectly-cooked filet. My duck was one of the best duck dishes I've had (and that's from someone who spent 2 weeks in the Dordogne region of France). My wife said the filet may have been the best one she's ever had (and she's a filet aficionado). Pacing was spot on, and we were never waiting long for the next dish. We finished the night was a delicious dessert. A really wonderful evening was spent at the Black Pearl, and it is highly recommended. It doesn't come cheap, of course, but sometimes the best things in life are worth spending a little extra. Because this is one of the best meals I've had in Tampa Bay. --- --- --- The Black Pearl has been one of those restaurants that I've had on my list for years, but I've just never had the opportunity to make it to. Now, is that sentence is kind of a lie? Yes, it is. I have the "opportunity" to come to the Black Pearl virtually 365 days a year, but it's just not often that I find myself in a "let's drop $200 for dinner" mood - and I especially don't find myself in that mood when I'm in or around Dunedin. But anytime a special occasion has arisen over the past couple years, I've always thought about The Black Pearl. Now that I finally did actually make it here, I'm kicking myself for waiting this long. The wife and I have had a few sub-par experiences when celebrating milestones lately, which left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't mind splurging for a fancy meal... as long as it's a great experience. And The Black Pearl was an *amazing* experience. When we arrived at 6pm on a Tuesday, we were the only patrons in the restaurant. It remained that way for the first 20 minutes, or so. At one point, I counted the seats in the dining room, and I believe it was around 25-30. It's a modest place, that's kept that way on purpose. Our very friendly server shared with us that the owner/chef wanted to keep the dining room small, as to not sacrifice the quality. I can get behind that! As for the food, everything we ordered was absolutely exceptional: Bread - Even something as standard as bread was memorable. The texture of this bread was a bit more firm than you'd typically experience, and I actually noticed that it was a tad on the salty side (in a good way.) The server later mentioned that the bread is salted to confirm that. We loved it and asked for more to be brought out later in our meal. Maple Pork Belly - This was the appetizer I knew I'd be ordering, based off of the review highlights. It actually wasn't on the menu, but was mentioned as a special. I'd imagine it's pretty regularly a special because a lot of people mention it in their reviews. Often times, pork belly can be a bit hard/chewy, but this was the complete opposite of that - it was some of the best pork belly I've ever had. And the maple flavor was the perfect pairing. Salads - I opted for cesar while my wife went with the standard, so that we could try both. Both were prepared as well as one could hope for. While it doesn't seem like there should be a ton of variation with salad, there is, and these were both at the top of that spectrum. Lobster Risotto - I knew for sure that I'd be ordering this when I stalked the reviews. My God, was it amazing and perfect in every way? Yes, it was. I don't know how I can describe it other than that. Order this and don't think twice about it. Filet Mignon - Can I just replicate my exact sentiments that I just had about the Lobster Risotto? The only thing better than these two dishes is ordering both and sharing them equally. This might be the best filet I've ever had. It had a very slight char around the edges and was soft/melty in the middle. I almost said "perfectly" soft/melty, but realized that I've already said "perfect" twice in this review and don't want to be redundant. But what other words can I use to describe something that physically could not be improved? This filet tastes like it was made by whoever created the Earth. If you're like I was and have The Black Pearl on your to-do list, move it to the very top. My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday and we've been here before to celebrate other birthdays. This is what happened that will most likely make it where we will not come back. When greeted by our waiter he was pleasant, he asked if we'd been there before which we responded to yes and then asked what we were celebrating to which I told him my birthday and he did say happy birthday. From there we ordered an item from each area of the menu, all came out in reasonable time. Where it went south is with our entrees. I ordered the filet with lobster added and my husband asked the waiter to bring him something he recommended. Once the entrees came to the table the waiter put the lobster risotto in front of me and I said oh that is not me possibly it's for my husband since he asked you to surprise him? The waiter looked at the order confused and said I'll be back. He then went to the kitchen and came back out with the order and attempted to give it to his other table who told him that they also didn't order it. From there he went back to the kitchen came out and said to us sorry there's been a mix up your order will be out shortly. It was here that I knew we were going to be waiting at least 20 minutes longer for our food and that my husbands order was going to sit under a heat lamp because what happened is our waiter put me down for lobster risotto not filet mignon add lobster. In the passing of waiting 20 minutes extra for our dinner I noted that other tables were given their ciders before their dinner, this is something black pearl did when we were there last it is a pallet cleanser, our waiter never brought that out to us. Once our food did finally come my husbands plate was searing hot and those words came from the waiters mouth which again no surprise because they put his duck under a heat lamp while making my steak. So his duck was dry, AND the lobster that I wanted added was not with the steak. I told the waiter and he said oh no I'm sorry do you want it still and I said no because we were on a time crunch due to needing to get home to the babysitter. He then went about his time and what was even more off putting is all his other tables got top service, he explained the menu went over his favorites etc things not done for us maybe because we weren't drinking I'm not sure. Oh I also forgot to mention he brought the dessert menu WAY before our entrees hit the table the first time which I think was premature dessert menus normally are brought after the entree of anything that made us feel rushed and this was before we even said anything about a babysitter. So of course after finishing our entrees I pulled out the credit card and set it on the table at which he saw it and said you're ready to settle up and took the card. He then brought the bill back but not itemized it was just a bill with how much we owed. He then said I hope this experience doesn't keep you from coming back. I asked him to please bring us a actual itemized bill as I wanted to be sure he didn't charge us for the lobster I never got. In short Black Pearl like other restaurants are on board with the auto 20% gratuity due to the minimum wage being raised to $15 in FL owners don't want to pay waiters $15 a hour and have them get tips. So fine I understand if that's your business model fine, but there is not a doubt in my mind that his service went extremely down hill without caring about how it effected our experience because they are all still getting the 20% grat. So I say all this to say I've worked in restaurants for a better part of my teens to late 20s what should have happened is he should've told the manager what was happening and something should've been offered as a sorry instead everything was so messed up and I left frustrated without even getting to blow out a candle. This was a very unfortunate experience because we live up the road and do love the food but the way we were treated and the fact that literally nothing was offered to say sorry we really dropped the ball just makes it where we will have a hard time coming back. read more

I tried this restaurant for the first time on a girls trip and I have to say this is one of the best plates of food I've ever had at a restaurant. The food is indescribably delicious. I got the lobster risotto. It was so rich and decadent. Our party all got different dishes and tasted each others. The house salad and Cesar salad was one of the best I've had. I live 2 hours from this restaurant and I would drive just to eat here again. Also the service was so great. We went for a birthday and the accommodations were on point. They gave us champagne as soon as we were settled to celebrate. Just kind, nice, and fun service from the server, manager, and host. The pricing was very fair and I would say on the lower side for a white table cloth dinner for the caliber of food that was received. I've paid a lot more for food that was not nearly as good. So it is absolutely worth the price. I will say this place has a very small and intimate vibe. There are maybe 10 tables along the walls then we had the large one in the center. Expect to pay $100 per person, which I have no complaints about that. The restaurant is extremely small, maybe about ten tables. They are trained exactly what to say to make it seem like you are to have a sophisticated, and elegant meal. The food was just not there flavor-wise. I did not know this being I am from out of town. I just knew my mom loved it. So, I wanted to take her. It's a small place and you're pretty much on top of each other unless you score a booth with your reservation (they looked to be holding out for 4 people in a booth but I'm sure you could work around that if you're a couple). We had a table by the wall so at least no one was walking by the backs of our chairs. That aside, the ambiance is upscale, the music was muted and sound deadening was great so we could keep our conversation at a normal level. I appreciate that so much. Server was very professional and all courses were brought out at exactly the right time and served properly hot or cold. Wine sommelier was helpful as described by others. We had a lovely bottle of wine and wouldn't have necessarily chosen it but were happy with the end result. Chilean sea bass and duck were our entrees and I've never had better. The Black Pearl salad that is included in your meal was so good. Bananas Foster also 5*. I also loved that the staff knew frequent customers by name and addressed them as they arrived and left. WOW!!! This place has been recommended to me by a few people so I made a reservation here for my girlfriend's birthday and it did not disappoint at all. The ambiance here is so nice. The restaurant is small, cozy and intimate. There's not many tables and reservations are definitely a requirement. The service we had was great and very informative and helpful. Our server, Dan, gave lots of great recommendations when going over the menu with us since it was our first time. We ate so much here. Do not be alarmed by any portions that may seem small - we left here completely stuffed. As for price, for two hors d'oeuvres, bread, two salads, two starters, two entrees, two desserts and a bottle of wine we paid a little over $300. For a nice birthday dinner and SO much food, this felt reasonable for us and was less than we were planning on spending. But this is by no means a budget friendly or inexpensive meal, so that's something to keep in mind! My favorite things I ate were the lobster risotto (which we shared as one of our starters - it's so rich that I would not recommend having it as an entree, but it's so delicious!) and I had the duck for my entree, which was cooked perfectly. My girlfriend got the filet which she said is by far the best steak she's ever had. For dessert we had the white chocolate cake & the lavender crème brûlée. Both were fantastic, and so was the bottle of wine we shared. We're not big drinkers so we asked for some recommendations for something slightly sweet but not too sweet, and we were able to try the server's recommendation and we loved it and had no problem finishing the whole bottle. Overall we loved every second of our experience here, even down to the palette cleanser popsicles and the Belgian chocolates that were brought to us at the end of our meal. We will definitely be back, possibly for a future birthday or anniversary :) As for parking, it's located right on Main Street in downtown Dunedin. There is limited street parking but plenty of space in the nearby parking lots. read more
