The crowds tell you that the locals love this place, and it shows that the Breakfast Nook loves their regulars just as much. The problem is that if you are a traveler passing by and have stopped for breakfast your service will be secondary to the regulars. For example, we were immediately seated, and asked by 4 different servers if we wanted coffee and didn't receive it because after affirming that we did, they would go over to a known table pour their coffee and bypass us. It took me asking the 5th person for coffee before it was served. Then another 6 minutes and 2 requests for cream before we got that. Meanwhile, the table of 5 next to us who were welcomed back had their coffee and had already ordered. The food was fine. The hash was onioned filled and the potatoes were good. Always looking for a good breakfast place and this hit the mark. They don't seat you until all parties are there, so we lucked out and sat right away while others waited, so don't leave if you get there and see people waiting. Me coffee cup stayed fill, the waitress was friendly and the French toast and pancakes came out as described in the menu, except missing the cinnamon butter. On first glance, signage would suggest that it was an annex to the more garishly signed pizza joint in the same building. Not so. Ordered the special - a cheddar, bacon, avocado egg scrambler for about eight bucks. Quite good, with just the right amount of crunch fried into the egg. Nothing special about the bacon, but hey, bacon is bacon. Friend ordered the made-daily corned beef hash. It was fine; just wish it had more stuff (fat?) to hold it together. Decors is farmhouse/rooster-heavy, which is fine, given the pizza annex alternative. Service was fast enough, and they even accommodated an odd ketchup-Tabasco mix request. read more

This is a good classic breakfast restaurant. The offerings range from the classic to a few dishes with a bit of a twist. They are all very well prepared. The corned beef hash is my brother's favorite. The staff is courteous and efficient, moving customers through the very busy weekend rush with just enough attention, but no sense of pressure. I had The Big Breakfast, a classic, and although I wasn't overwhelmed by the flavors (I tend to like hickory or apple-smoked thick-cut bacon, and special sausages), everything was perfectly made. Came here for breakfast on Saturday morning. Had a full house, but the staff did a great job seating us quickly. I had Eggs Benedict (California style). They were alright, but nothing special. If your looking for super fast diner food maybe somewhere else will suit you because the food sometimes takes a bit longer than those other fast service diners but everything is fresh and well prepared. My favorite brunch spot near New Haven! We like to come here after hikes on the weekend. There's usually a line out the door, but it moves quickly, and the food is worth the wait. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous; I'm a big fan of the breakfast burritos. The décor is delightfully quaint, with just the right amount of kitsch (roosters and oversized utensils adorn the walls). The service is friendly and the coffee refills are abundant. Had to ask 2 different people for 2 waters and one waitress dropped 1 water off at the corner of the table no one was sitting at. No one refilled coffee. Even if you asked you were forgotten about. Heading to townhouse! Got attitude at THE NOOK. No hi, but an immediate why are you standing in the"middle" of the dinning area. There was a party of 14 waiting to be seated and my kids were sitting in the chair by the wall. Oops I forgot I had just finished talking to Chris, the bus boy. Thought the owner was kidding so I stepped closer, as I knew her, and explained that all to her and said don't yell at me. She just went about the 14 people and me being in the "middle" of the floor. This used to be my favorite place. It has gone downhill. I went this morning at 930 it was empty and they sat me right by the bathroom door. I ask for a bowl of oatmeal and it came out tasting like waxy and bland had no flavor. It used to come with seeds and cranberries all kinds of good stuff and healthy stuff in it this was not the way it used to be made. They poured my coffee and it tasted like there was flavor in it they couldn't remember which pot they served me so they had to give me another cup They gave me milk i wanted cream when i asked they said it was cream t clearly it was milk The staff was running around like it was packed but it was empty. I asked for one egg and they said they cant do that Without charging me for a full breakfast even though i didn't want toast potatoes or both eggs 'what? Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but this is hands down my favorite breakfast/brunch place in all of New Haven/North Haven area. I feel like I'm not getting ripped off for paying +$10 for a couple of eggs and pancakes I could have made at my house. HIGHLY recommend the crab eggs Benedict with healthy portions of real crab meat. I've never ordered anything here that's been bust. Have been wanting to try this place for a long time after hearing good things and it definitely lived up to its reputation. The wait time was short, the service was fast and the food was great. I had a garden veggie omelet with Italian bread toast (which I've never seen as an option at a breakfast place before). I also had a side of George's home fries which have onions, garlic and jalapeño. I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to spicy food but these weren't too spicy at all. The service was terrible, the owner and co- workers were camped around the small counter area eating and talking loudly while we were ignored. It took so long for our order to arrive that when my plate came I did not remember if I ordered a side of bacon, before I could ask, she quickly twirled and returned to the fun time in the back. I was almost done when someone else came to the table and said oh you forgot you ordered bacon, it was cold. This is the second time I visited. I was trying to give the Nook the benefit of the doubt. They have one cook and sadly she can only cook one meal at a time and can't seem to multitask. The first visit on Saturday afternoon with only 2 other tables with people in the place we waited 15 minutes for a server and then another 45 minutes to get two poorly tasting hot dogs and a small cup of not completely cooked (raw) potato salad. Ahhh, we said they are new, they will get it together. Benefit of the doubt here we come! We go back a month later for breakfast. We are seated and given menus. 15 minutes go by before we are offered coffee and take our order of 2 Western Omelets with American cheese, home fries, side order of crispy bacon and wheat toast. Ugh... no benefit here... Waited another 45 minutes to get breakfast and mind you this is at 11:15 not exactly rush time. Our server, a very young girl never came over to refill coffee's or ask how our meal was. The omelets had cheddar cheese not american, home fries had less then zero flavor, the toast was like eating dust as it had no butter or even jelly on the table to help it and the bacon was as limp as a wet noodle. In short, the food is seriously lacking, the cook is lacking both in talent and speed, and the service is just plain right horrible. I will not be visiting a third time. read more
