My husband and our friends and I came to the brig for lunch. We are traveling and not from here so we took a chance. The waitress was nice and pretty good but that's the only positive thing I can say. My hubby and I order the fish and chips to split, a cup of chowder and a side salad and 1 lemonade. And it cost us $54!! The food was not good. The French fries weren't too bad but the fish was flavorless. The salad had cucumber and tomatoes but a lot of the lettuce was yellow. Everything here is priced double what it should be. Nice server. She's been here decades. Only one other table in the whole place at prime dinner hour. No wonder. Nice views. The sourdough rolls were great!!!!! The fries are unbelievably amazing. Fish and chips were excellent and extremely generous portions but not quite with the astronomical prices. Our server was extremely nice. The decor hasn't been touched since 1974. Except for the 1985 Christmas trees still out (in July). The place smells and is dank and dingy. It's a shame. Passing through Dana Point and stopped at the harbor for a nice dinner. I order the calamari special and I'm sure it wasn't fresh calamari but more like frozen, breaded and fried. The rice was bland and I never received my coleslaw. For it being a $19 plate I was disappointed. However my daughters burger was good but you just don't need a whole plate of fries. Too bad, I was really hoping the food would be better than the reviews. But then again, I can more often than not, trust the Yelp reviews. We decided to give this coffee shop a shot as the location is fantastic (steps from the harbor) and it is just so cute and family friendly! The server we had was actually really terrific and so was the host. I did like that it was so kid friendly and comfortable. But, I just don't get the prices- what's up with the high prices for coffee shop type entrees? It was especially disappointing because I felt that I would have a better meal at Denny's and the price, literally, would have been half the cost. The only thing I could think of was that piece of real estate must command a high rent. If the service hadn't been good, this place would have been a real dud. In Dana Point for the Festival of Whales, we were on our own for dinners. Our hotel was nearby and I stopped into the Brig for dinner after a long walk around the harbor. I ordered an iced tea and after looking at the menu, I opted for the fish and chips. I wasn't expecting fresh catch off the coast and I didn't get that either. The fish was standard frozen, breaded fish restaurants by from a food wholesaler. It was deep fried and cooked to a nice brown. The fries were not chips but not many restaurants in the US will serve anything like chips. Instead we get French fries. For dessert, I ordered their house custard which is made by them. It was a flan with a very sweet liquid beneath the custard. Service was good! My server was a pleasant young woman who refilled my iced tea without needing to ask. This was an OK meal. It would be like stopping at a chain restaurant and ordering fish and chips. read more

The food is above coffee shop, I really go there because they have a nice breakfast. If I want a place to talk in, this is it. It's not loud, it has comfortable seating. The bathroom is in need of a facelift long ago. They have good omelets, good service. The owner turns down the AC sometimes and it can be uncomfortable when he does. read more

Mandy was amazing! This was our first time here. I was looking for a dog friendly restaurant and this came up. I have been in this area several times and never come across this place. The breakfast was delicious! And the service was excellent. Mandy was outstanding! I told her I would come back tomorrow and I did. Great breakfast place in Dana Point right next to the Harbor. The prices are a tad high but it's definitely worth it because the food is great and big portions. I got the country fried steak with scrambled eggs and hash browns. I don't know what they do to those potatoes but they are DELISH!! My husband got the biscuit and gravy. Everything was so yummy and our order came out so quick! We did go to the place on a week day but there was no wait. Our server was so sweet and on top of our water and coffee. We were looking for a place to have breakfast before we attended the Talk Ships festival and found this gem. Service was very good. Seated immediately with the majority of the people sitting outside. The restaurant was a bit warm. The waitress took our drink order and meal order shortly after. The meal arrived very quickly, we were pleasantly surprised. Food served hot. I decided to try something new that I have never seen on any breakfast menu. A meatball omelet! It was different to mix Italian with breakfast. It was good. I would certainly come back to try the meatballs lunch item. This place is very dog friendly with many people sharing a meal with their pets on the outside dining patio. 6/16/2019 The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the "A" hole owner Kevin. It is Father's Day today and one would think the owner would be tickled pink to be packed. As we entered the first thing coming out of his mouth "Do you have a reservation"? in a rude and pathetic way. Let me teach you thing about customer service Kevin, a simple good morning and or happy Father's Day may be a better way to welcome paying customers. Then you started barking at the people that work for you in a condescending manner, not to mention yelling across the restaurant at one of them because one of them sat some guests at the wrong table apparently. Kevin, do you realize that they are your most valuable asset? Yes, your employees are! Maybe you should try treating them with a bit more respect and not disrespect them in front of the customers. I will not knock the service from everyone else or the quality and portion sizes of the food it is always above average. The Brig is a solid diner in the Dana Point Harbor. It's a great location and it's been there since I was a child. Breakfast is always good and always worth the trip. My son and I come here when we're out and want a simple meal that's good and quick. The wait staff are really fabulous. Great personalities and easy going folks. It gives the place a nice hometown feel. They go the extra mile with carafes of iced tea and lemonade on the table and anything else you need. The turkey or chicken BLT is a great sandwich that I have had many times. Their fries are really good with a nice crispness to them. We've had the nachos, those are good and big. My son likes the quesadillas. He had a veggie burger yesterday that was really a surprise. The veggie patty was really tasty. He added some swiss cheese and grilled onions....yummy! I had the Turkey Ortega melt yesterday which I'll never order again. The top bread was toasted and cheesy as it should be but the bottom bread was a soggy mess. The juice from the Ortega Chili and the turkey had soaked into it. If it had been cooked properly, the chili and the turkey would have been grilled longer so they would have dried out enough to be assembled. I'm sad because I love Ortegas on sandwiches. 1st visit to The Brig. Location is nice right near the water. We came in for Breakfast on a Sunday morning and expected a bit of a wait. Upon arrival hosted seated us right away. Overall, service was nice and attentive. There were 4 of us. I ordered the #1 which was a combo with 1 egg, French toast and bacon. Bacon was crunchy which is how I like it, eggs were scrambled, tasted great and French toast was just soft enough but not soggy and with just the right amount of powdered sugar. The rest had a Machaca plate with rice and beans. The Machaca was good and only complaint was the rice had a bit of a non-traditional Spanish flavor. The rest of our party had the #6, 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and 2 pancakes which they thought was good. Overall a good experience, clean tables, attentive service, good food and by the water. Prices might reflect location because everything was about $2-$3 more than expected. We would come back and recommend The Brig to anyone looking to eat in Dana Point close to the water. read more

We have been going here when I'm in the area for years. The chili-size is my go-to but the patty melt is very good. Great breakfast place also. The fries are awesomely crunchy and stay tasty thru the entire meal, not like those other places were you must eat the fries like an appetizer or they go bad. Saw lots of mentions about prices but I don't blame the establishment for trying to stay in business while paying business expenses. Inflation has cut into the bottom line and restaurants that don't adjust will go the way of the dinosaur. Give them a try and support a local establishment that isn't a large corporate chain. The service was fantastic. Our server was on her game and kept checking in to make sure all was acceptable and refilling the drinks. I give two stars because the description "could've been better" is true. I'm reluctant to write a bad review because it's really a "first world problem." Simply writing to provide an honest review and something for them to improve upon. The waitress was extremely nice and apologetic about the long wait. So we didn't give her a hard time. Fact: We sat down just before 6:30 and food came after 7:37. I believe this is never the waitresses fault. Has to be something behind the scenes. What was concerning was, there was a family of five that sat down after us and finished eating by the time our food came. They were on dessert. SMH. That's what was confusing. If the kitchen was behind, why did the other family get their food so fast? Maybe they pre-ordered on an app? The long wait gave my family a wonderful opportunity to bond and get to know one another. For that we are grateful. But I am disappointed my family had to wait so long. Kids were getting hungry after a long day and parents drove down from an hour away. The prices were that of fine dining, but food was average... kinda like cafeteria/buffet quality. My prime rib wasn't prime rib, it was a chuck steak. It wasn't even that good . It was stiff, unseasoned, and was overall hard to eat. Expensive and bad. The mashed potatoes were nasty. The coffee is instant coffee and it's disgusting. The spaghetti is a different matter, those meatballs were BUSSIN and so was the garlic bread, it was very good. Pasta sauce was kinda mid tho. The pink lemonade was pretty good too. Their clam chowder is watery and bad, it tastes as if they dumped a bunch of those Mexican seasoning packets in it and called it a day. The hamburger was out of this world tbh, it tasted great. The French fries weren't soggy, they were nice and crispy. They needed some salt though. So like... halfway there.
