It pains me to share this honest review. We wanted to love this place! We were so excited to try it. We called as soon as we found them on yelp and their machine noted they are available to reserve up to 30 days in advance! Great we thought people love this place! They called us back the same day and said they did have a table available outside if we didn't mind it being a bit big for 2. We were thrilled! The parking lot is tiny but there is additional parking around the corner. When you walk up to the restaurant it's absolutely lovely. A lush little garden with great tables and seating. The waitress said the chef was French trained and the French onion soup was the real deal. This is one of my husband's favorite soup. He was disappointed with the amount of salt it had. It took away from the flavor of the soup. I ordered the baked clams and they were cheesy and good which in my book is hard to do! My husband ordered a combo shrimp, rockfish and scollops with mash and string beans and I ordered the no filler lump crab cake with the same sides. I was surprised by the amount of salt added to the mash potatoes but they were still good and the string beans were perfect. The crab cake however was sent back. It was slick, grayish and smelled fishy. I thought ok just a bad piece. The waitress came out and stoped at every table but ours we tried to wave her down twice and missed her. So here I'm watching my husband eat dinner and I'm starting to get annoyed. The waitress comes back out, goes to a few other tables and finally notices us trying to get her attention. She comes over and asks me if she can get me something else and I ask for the menu. It takes a few minutes to get it and now my husband is well past half way through this dinner so I ordered a salad something quick and the waitress takes this opportunity to tell us that that was the first crab cake they ever had sent back! Now I make no apologies, I eat it all the time and what they severed me was not fit for consumption and all they had to do was smell it and they would have agreed-but she seemed just a bit miffed that I broke there long streak. The salad was tiny but tasteful. The dressing was a bit too acidic but sweet at the same time. My husband was done eating so he then had to sit around and watch me eat. He liked his dish, the fish was fresh. Towards the bottom of his mash he got a bit le of super salty potatoes - much like my first and only bite. We don't understand restaurants who use too much salt because they could easily leave it unsalted and out slat and pepper on the table. ;) the blue moon beer was devine with a a lush piece of orange in the rim. I would try them again for drinks and appetizers but unless they have something I really want, I don't think we'll be running back for dinner. We would rate them a 3 1/2 but having to pick between 3 or 4 I can't with good conscious give a 4 for this visit. read more

The customer service was simply outstanding! We were fortunate to be seated in the upstairs wine room and were able to enjoy a quiet dinner with our good friends. Four of us enjoyed a first class dinner there on Saturday night. the clams casino appetizer is exceptionally delicious. Our main course entrées consisted of ribeye steak cooked perfectly, their rockfish, special, perfectly seasoned, and sautéed, they have special of potato, encrusted, salmon, and the captains seafood with scallops, shrimp, and fish. We ate in this restaurant last night and agree with all those who recommended it, that its food is superb. The restaurant is in a lovely yellow house on Atlantic Avenue/Route 26, with good parking. It has standard tables but OK. Decor has lovely navy and white which hints of France. Easily a match to Connecticut and NY restaurants! The menu is quite robust and offers a wide selection for appetizers and entrees. Some very creative offerings throughout the menu and for wines, a really nice selection. Menu leans a bit towards French cuisine which I love. When you Order your entree, Two sides are included and they have really great sides. That fir both of us was a real plus. The only minus was, no bread! They have great Crusty bread with a mussel dish which my husband fell in love with, but no table bread! Any French restaurant we've eaten in here or French, has crusty bread. We hope that that will be added. The Specialty salmon dish was beyond incredible. Rarely have salmon that tasty ever. Joel had the Pork chop which was cooked to perfection. Would have loved a fruit dessert since we're both lactose intolerant but Joel had the key lime pie (took a pill) which he said was "the" best key lime pie he's had. We'd easily award 5 stars to the restaurant. It is not inexpensive so be prepared but we would return here again and again and pray for bread!. On another point, a French press coffee or espresso would have made my husband's day. I understand that you have incredible coffee beans but nothing is better than French press or espresso. This is the best restaurant we have eaten at in Bethany Beach. High quality food and service. Menu changes daily based on the market. We ate in their nice outdoor space. While it sits on Route 26, it is nicely shielded from the traffic noise. It is is pricey but excellent. read more

This evening's dining experience was a little piece of paradise. The service from Isaac was impeccable. The food was exquisite. The wines were intoxicating. I live just east of the Bay Bridge in Stevensville. I am visiting friends this weekend who introduced me to the cafe. Very disappointed. I found my waitress, Gisette, to be very unattentive. I ordered a ribeye. My steak was not warm when delivered to my table. Gisette was not the least bit apologetic even though it was her fault for not paying attention to our order. For much of our meal, Gisette was nowhere to be found. My check was initially $136. Gisette charged me $140. When I mentioned the discrepancy to the hostess she said there was a 3% charge for using a credit card. I found this extremely odd as I've never come across this before. I suspect had we had a more competent waitress we would have had a very different experience. In the end, I would not recommend this place at all. read more

My husband and I recently dined at this restaurant. It was early evening when we went. We were seated just as you walked in. The table next to us was close by and they were a loud bunch. We split a salad, which was okay. I had the steak and my husband had a fish dinner. Can't remember what it was. Nothing special. They do chalky for soda refills which really surprised us. Our waiter was not very attentive. Maybe because there were only 2 of us? We didn't order dessert, but we did see what the table next to us ordered. The desserts did look good. Bill came, very expensive. Bottom line: I can get better service; a pretty delicious steak, and a fish dinner somewhere else and not have to spend an extra messily $4 for a refill. This restaurant was disappointing. The only way they take reservations is by phone. When you call, you get a message saying they get hundreds of calls a day (really?) and that you should be patient for a return call. They have a lot of off-putting rules that are so strongly worded on their website that it almost seems that they don't want you to come. We were there with seven people, and their rule that they will split the bill between no more than two people (not mentioned on the website) required quite a bit of inconvenience on our part following the dinner to pay back the two people who ended up paying for the group. The food was mediocre. I ordered halibut with vegetables ($40). The vegetables were nicely cooked and seasoned, but the halibut was overcooked, bland, and dry. No sauce was provided that might have helped alleviate these issues. The desserts were okay but nothing special. The best parts of our experience were the waiter who was wonderful and attentive, and the outdoor ambiance, They have a lovely garden area with large tables and comfortable chairs, and it was a beautiful evening from an aesthetic point of view. I went inside to use the restroom and noticed that half the tables were empty. This was at 7:30pm on a Saturday night near the end of July. So their website warning that you must vacate the premises within 2 hours because of such huge demand for tables seemed a bit ironic. read more

We went here tonight to celebrate a special occasion. We were blown away by the entire experience. The place is a real winner from the food, to the friendly service. I had the signature potato encrusted salmon with crab meat. It was awesome. The best salmon dish I have ever had and I mean..I get salmon a the time. My wife had the scallops, she enjoyed them as well. We also had the crab soup which was full of lumps of delicious crab and the escargot which was as good as it gets. Food was amazing. The service not so much. Reservation was for 7, sat right down got our drinks and then we sat for 25 minutes before I finally had to say to him that we were ready to order. He ignored us the whole time. The manager or someone asked how were things, we said food amazing, service terrible. She said they like to not rush you however I said I watched other tables and that was not the problem from what I observed. A table of 2 came in after us and left in a timely manner before us. Went there for my birthday.....when we walked in and my wife gave her name for our reservation...the Hostess immediately turned and wished me a Happy Birthday... She then brought us to our table and when our waiter came over, he also wished me a Happy Birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. Salmon swordfish and crab cakes were ordered and enjoyed by all. However it's very pricey so we were expecting better service. We were asked to pass the water glasses down. Kitchen staff came out with entrees and had no idea who got what. When we mentioned the confusion to our waiter he threw the kitchen staff under the bus and he said it wouldn't have happened if he was there. So where was he? Reserved the wine room 2 wks should for a birthday celebration dinner for 4. We arrived at 6:30 and were led to the room. The table was bare except for 4 napkins roiled over utensils. Dimly lit with no music. We were the only diners on the 2nd floor. We waited 10 minutes before our very pleasant waitress brought us ice water. After we selected wine , it was poured, and our dinner order given , again we waited Appetizers arrived, hot and delicious. We received our entrees and were disappointed that potatoes were very Luke warm, string beans, though good, were cold. Portions were adequate but a little on the small size considering the price. Crab cake excellent, meatloaf very tasty. Overall, I probably will give them another try. Disappointing that the "special" room isn't treated that special. Be prepared to need a snack when you get home even though your wallet is much lighter. read more

This place is amazing. The atmosphere is cozy & very relaxing. The food and drinks are astounding. My favorite is the filet mignon with the sweet potatoes. The desserts are to die for! The key lime pie is a favorite and the pumpkin cheesecake with marshmallow topping is a must try for the fall!! I also LOVE the chocolate mousse with strawberries! Excellent meal, with a personal touch. My wife and I have now visited Cafe on 26 twice. Both times outstanding meals, and even better service. Josette is wonderful. I highly recommend her. The establishment is an old house giving you that comfortable feeling. We love in the post pandemic world that we were not seated on top of one another. They don't rush you in or out. Love the hostess also. Our first time there, we had an issue with parking. No less than 4 people from the Cafe, including the owner, came to reassure us that we were parked safely. I have been wanting to get here for the last 3 years based on personal reviews from friends and neighbors . Finally I was able to get a reservation right after the summer rush . Arrived on a rainy Sunday night, and understandably not particularly busy. I have to say I will not return . This restaurant is more hype than substance . To start, one of the cocktails ordered was delivered with a dead fly and a dirty glass- wait staff was alerted , and was replaced without an apology. What was extraordinary was that when we alerted this to our wait person, she said "well it's that time of year ". Are you kidding ? It was delivered that way so she obviously didn't even look at what she was delivering . This is supposed to be a " boutique" restaurant by their advertising. It is very pricey compared to most other establishments in the area- for the price I expect both food and service to be very good- that response was not good. The food is mixed , while their signature dish was quite good , the sides advertised as homemade seem more Sysco than kitchen , the tuna was overly salted and the filet was undersized . We had two appetizers both of which were underwhelming. To be honest , we were not going to wait around for dessert . The host did understand what customer service meant and did reduce our bill for the fly . But adding injury to the night , they charge 3% fee if paying by credit card , even though website says that only applies if you're splitting the bill . I'm sorry , but I won't be back , and the sad thing is they could care less because they have a good following. read more

It's been a little while since we went to Cafe on 26, but when we used to go to Bethany all the time - it was definitely a place we had to go to each time. We went here for multiple celebrations - graduation dinner, Valentine's day, birthdays, and more. The chef when we used to go was named Jason. I sincerely hope he is still there because this place was amazing. We always got the crab dip as an appetizer which was gobbled up pronto while it was still bubbling. I always ordered the crab stuffed flounder which after I had for the first time I knew I would NEVER deviate from. Jason prepared that thing perfectly. The fish was tender and fresh. The crabmeat was generous and tasted like you'd expect from this part of the world. I recommend reservations if you've got a party of 4 or more because the restaurant is in a basically a large house so isn't huge. I gave this place 4 stars bc we went there one time with a large group, talking about how amazing it was. It just so happened it was a night Jason wasn't there and it was obvious. The food was nowhere near as good and my go-to fish was rubbery and the crab dip greasy. I have been there since that occasion though, and true to form the food made by Jason was awesome. read more

This was our second time at Cafe on 26. We were excited to go back. The food was very good. The service and attention from the waiter were good. Everything was wonderful until the check came, and our lovely dinner was ruined by poor management. We were shocked to see $16.00 charged for 2 glasses of club soda and two refills. $16.00 for carbonated water! Other very fine restaurants in Bethany don't even charge for club soda. Even if a restaurant charges for it, you would assume a couple of bucks, not $4 per glass. But what was worse (much worse) is the waiter asked the manager about our concern, and came back to say there was nothing she could do. The manager never even came to the table to explain. Now look, we live in a metropolitan area in Maryland, so we are used to eating in expensive places, but never have we been charged $16.00 for club soda. And, if we ever have a problem in a restaurant, from fine dining to fast casual, the manager always comes over to inquire. We are small business owners ourselves, and we would never treat our customers with such disregard. It was like a kick in the teeth. Good food doesn't trump poor management. read more

We ate here 4 years ago and the food was so good we made sure this was the first restaurant we ate at on this trip. Crab cake is very good, crab bisque is one of the best I have ever has, filets were cooked perfect. Service was a little disjointed with the server a bit disorganized but the food made up for it. 3 stars to 3.5 stars for a Sunday Brunch visit with a party of 5. We were nicely accommodated with a reservation and the 5 of us were seated in a semi-private alcove. We were really surprised at how quiet and not busy the Cafe was, as there aren't many establishments of its kind in the immediate vicinity. Parking was easy in the private lot behind the big, charming Victorian home that houses the cafe. Host was very friendly, and recognized our reservation immediately. Our waiter and the table staff were all great; no issues there whatsoever. I was hoping for a slightly more varied menu; it irks me somewhat when very lunchy items find their way on a Sunday brunch menu, but I get it - brunch is a portmanteau of "breakfast" and "brunch" and there are people out there who want lettuce/salads for their first meal of the day... Anyway, two of the ladies in my group ordered the "Crazy Eggs," and they were a huge hit! Well worth the supposed extra wait for the kitchen to prepare, however their eggs came out with the rest of our entrees. Another girl in my group fell in love with the Creamed Chipped Beef, so she was a very happy camper. I ordered a create-your-own omelette, but was dismayed at the $2 upcharge for egg whites (less of an upcharge for egg substitute, but that stuff weirds me out). While I was hoping for a healthier and more creative alternative to the requisite home-fried potatoes, such as fruit, that wasn't an option, so I shared my potatoes with my pals. We have since gone back there for both brunch and for dinner. Absolutely amazing. Their brunch was great - their scrapel was the best I have ever had! My wife had the chicken salad and my daughter had the creme-brulee french toast. The french toast was like eating dessert!! For dinner again, we went specifically for their prime rib and also for the crab bisque - during brunch another customer was raving about the crab bisque.... Again, we were not disappointed! I would highly recommend Cafe on 26. Local family owned restaurant and not the typical Bethany restaurant that churns out table after table. The Cuisine and service is outstanding and you will not find a more creative menu or better presentation anywhere in Lewis, Rehobeth, Bethany beach or Ocean city . With delicious in house baked bread, bagels and other snacks this is a real treat for this that must, or choose to follow, a gluten free diet. We ordered sandwiches all around, I had the turkey with cucumber and bacon was great. A generous portion of boars head deli meat, kettle chips and a pickle accompanied. I also tried the grilled cheese, I'd get this again for sure! If I weren't so full from my sandwich I would have tried a dessert since I can never find ones I can eat elsewhere. They also have gluten free beer, gin and vodka. For the kids the menu is limited. Grilled cheese is really your best option. I left thinking this would be such a nice place to return to, we will definitely back, next time hopefully for dinner. read more
