A zillion combinations for this burger joint may be overwhelming to some. I'm not a burger connoisseur, I prefer places like In and Out where you just need to decide if you want cheese or not. Here you have 7 or 8 choices of cheese to choose from. I just ordered a turkey burger with american cheese. Pretty simple. BURGER: I ordered the 1/3 lb turkey burger on top of a field of greens (a burger salad!). I had one choice of cheese (American), 4 choices of 'toppings' (olives, pineapple, hard boiled eggs, and corn/bean salsa) and 1 choice of sauce (honey mustard). It was a very filling salad and compared to Aloha Salads right around the corner, this is a much better deal. The good thing about ordering the burger as a salad is you can eat the whole thing with your fork. It looked very difficult and very messy to bite into a burger with all fixings on a bun. FRIES: The regular fries are seasoned perfectly and are better than the sweet potato fries. If I'm going to eat fries here, it's going to be regular fries. TURKEY CHILI: Today they must have forgotten to turn up the warmer because the chili was almost room temperature when it arrived in the bowl. They throw in cranberries which give little bursts of flavor throughout this mildly sweet/spicy bowl of chili. The bowl is huge for $6.50. I'm really disappointed with The Counter. I heard so many great things about this place & I FINALLY had the opportunity to try it out for myself. I couldn't decide what kind of burger to build & frankly I was nervous about getting all the toppings I wanted. I'm pretty sure my burger would've cost me $20+. I went the safe route & ordered their Loco Moco with fried onion rings on top. Their Loco Moco isn't anything special, there wasn't any flavor to my meal. I was so disappointed with the food that I didn't have the heart to finish the meal. Maybe if I'm in the area, I'll give The Counter another chance & order a peso analogs burger. Impatient lady came along and encourage me to barge in like a rude person so I gave her a go-ahead so she gladly did. I'm not sure if I was upset at the impatient lady or at the restaurant staff for not opening and welcoming customers. No staff came to sat us. Eventually, I let few other parties walk in and then I follow after. Anyhow, we ordered sweet potato and onion strings, Contradiction (vegan burger), bacon burger, and Caesar salad. The sweet potato fries were not too far from Burger King's. However onion strings were thin and good. Both burgers were good. I didn't care for their buns though. They were kind of dry. This place is known for healthy beef and you can customize your own burger. That's all too complicated for me. Caesar salad is pretty fancy like fine dining. You get a half of lettuce so you have to do the cutting. But it's nice to eat Caesar salad not soaked in dressing. The restaurant was pretty clean. We had booth sitting which was very very TIGHT. I recommend table. I was sitting against the wall and I notice all sorts of left over food between the wall and booth and it was kind of smelly too. Maybe incidents and accidents? You can either build your own burger or select from menu. First time here, I'll try one of their recipes. I love smoked Gouda cheese so......I ordered the bison burger. The burger contains organic bison, sunny side up egg, smoked Gouda, baby spinach, onion marmalade on a soft maybe bao bun and house made thousand island on the side. --burger came out rare or seared. Ordered medium rare Sent the burger back and...perfect medium rare. I stole a bite of the WTF....what the face. Whoa goodness, that is a damn good turkey burger. I love the way they mix the flavors. All natural turkey, sweet and smoky from the applewood bacon, salt and vinegar chips and pickles, topped with melted provolone cheese and stone ground mustard. Mm mm mm!! I guess it starts when we first checked in. We had a party of eight. ( this is pre-Covid days) She says it will be a half hour wait. There were nine tables open inside of the restaurant. Now given most of the tables that were open were for four, they could've easily put them together. Then I ask if we could sit outside. She said that would also be a half hour wait. I said there are five tables open outside, but that didn't matter. Anyway you get the point I'm trying to make. Good burgers but the worse service, especially from my server. I ordered from The Counter a few nights ago through Doordash. I got the old-school burger ($13.80), loaded tots ($12.08), and a classic strawberry shake ($8.91). The burger was great! It was juicy and delicious. However, the loaded tots were a little disappointing. I felt that it could use a bit more cheese. It seemed like the cheese was in one corner so all the bacon bits were gathered on the bottom. I did like that they included ranch for them. Something that was a little surprising is that they didn't include a straw for my shake. I had asked for utensils and condiments but I only found napkins and condiment packets in the bag. It wasn't that big of a deal and I still enjoyed the shake. Overall, The Counter satisfied my burger cravings. However, for over $30 (not including delivery fees), I'm not sure if it was worth it. This place is like a love/hate relationship. I LOVE burgers and I LOVE that you can customize your burger any way you want it. They don't even limit the amount of toppings you can add on to it, which is awesome! Now you can also add a side to your burger, or not. It's really up to you. Love the choices and different sauces. However, somehow...every time I go, something is always missing in my burger. I'm pretty sure every time, but one time, something was missing on someone's burger sitting at my table. Sometimes you get a bonus and they add something extra that you didn't request on your burger. It can be a lovely surprise at times, but at times where I absolutely hate the topping accidentally added to my burger, I have to ask for another one. It is a gourmet burger and made how you like it, so expect the wait time to be a little bit longer than you would expect. If you don't want to build your burger you don't have to either. The Counter is one of those places where I forgot to write a review. We first visited when they opened a few years ago in 2009 and really enjoyed it. Location: Kahala Mall, very near the Whole Foods Store and Chili's. Casual Burger vibe with a bar. Menu: Burgers, design your own burger (turkey, beef, veggie, fish, venison and more ), burgers in a bowl. One third to one half pound options. Choose the bun, cheese, toppings and sauce. Side dishes and appetizers. Efficient service: Fill out the form to order your custom burger. Short wait and then they get out of your way so you can enjoy your burger. Waiter service. Impossible: As of fall 2017, they started serving the 'Impossible' meatless burger as an option. For several years this was only available at a handful of restaurants on the mainland. The result from years of research, a completely meat free hamburger substitute that sort of 'bleeds' when it cooks. This gives it a very realistic burger experience. Do a search on YouTube and research this a bit. Lots of great videos on this burger. Will this fake meat burger fool you?? It probably will...at the very least you will admit it is good. Impossible Verdict: This burger was good. I'd rate it as 5 stars and it was delicious and convincing. It really does taste authentic. Overall, I would rate The Counter as a 4 star burger joint. It was just one of those days when we were craving burgers. Meaty, juicy, thick burgers, and nothing else. But where were we to find burgers of this caliber? We had our options like Island Burgers, Honolulu Burger Co., or Burgers Over the Edge, but my family, girlfriend, and I decided on The Counter for its extensive menu and customizable options. Once seated, we were given a clipboard with one of those mini #2 pencils. Unfortunately, these pencils did not come with an eraser so we pondered hard over our choices. Of course, this was difficult. We had to go through five steps: choosing a burger, choose a cheese, choose up to 4 toppings, choose a sauce, and choose a bun, with each step having at least a minimum of ten selections. This means that with each and every visit to The Counter, one could have a different burger until around the 2,857,681st visit. Simply mind-boggling. After drooling over the selections, we decided to order the "Fifty-Fifty" of sweet potato fries and crispy onion strings to help prepare our stomach for the storm of the burgers. The fries were accompanied with three sauces of BBQ, chipotle aioli, and ranch. It was fun to mix and match hot, crunchy, crisp fries into cool, flavorful, rich dips. The Counter burgers require the use of both hands, a plate, and lots and lots of napkins. It is impossible to eat the entire thing without getting anything dirty. These burgers are massive, and I only had the 1/3 pound patty (other options include 2/3 pound, or a whole pound of meat or veggie). It was definitely fun to eat a creation that I dreamed up. If only it didn't cause such a large hole in my wallet, I think I would frequent this place more often. read more

I have not been a fan of the Counter do to many bad experiences and decided those times not to write a yelp because I didn't have nothing nice or positive to say. I feel guilty coming here because I try to eat healthier and a burger joint is always a place to avoid. But despite that little tidbit I don't mind eating here. The place is clean and I like the decor (hip without appearing like they are trying to be hip type). I like the idea of building your own burger instead of the restaurant choosing for you. And the burger is actually cooked to how you want it, and as a medium rare person that's what I like. Take that fast food burger joints that shall remain nameless here. My husband and I are carnivores. I like my steaks, but he loves his hamburgers. While he is a purist by nature (he likes just the hamburger with buns...no fancy toppings, thank you very much), he makes an exception for The Counter. I like coming to the Counter because of their variety in toppings and sauces. My husband will switch up his order when he comes here - sometimes he orders burgers off the menu, other times he will build his own burger (where he deviates from his purist nature by fancy-ing up his burger). I always build my own burger. My burger always consists of 1/3 pound beef (the weight is AFTER it is cooked) with provolone cheese and teriyaki sauce. My additional toppings are the lettuce blend, baby spinach, organic mixed greens, and fried onion. The build your own burger option comes with the choice of 1 cheese, 4 vegetables, 1 sauce, and 1 bun. There are toppings, like the fried onions, that will be an additional charge. I find that the meat, toppings, and sauce can be rather filling, so I never eat the bun (and I always eat the burger with a knife and fork...not the usual way I would eat a burger). I found out later on that I can ask them to not include the bun. Perfect solution - less food is wasted and I eat less starch/filler. The burgers are always juicy. The fried onions are always crispy. The teriyaki sauce adds just the right amount of flavor and sweetness to the burger. Yummy! Of course, at a burger place, I need to order fries. At The Counter, my husband and I share an order of sweet potato fries. It almost always comes out hot and crispy. I just add a bit of pepper (the fries are already lightly salted) and it is delicious. I am usually STUFFED by the time we get to desserts, so I have not tried any of their shakes or desserts. Maybe one day I will...if I ever have enough room in my belly AND I don't start thinking of all the calories I just ate. The prices can be on the higher side for a burger joint, but I think of it as the cost for choice. They also have a market selection menu where they showcase seasonal ingredients. If you like burgers this is one place you have to visit. The best thing about The Counter is that you can build a custom burger. Their burgers are made with grass fed beef. It's the perfect place for picky people because the ordering process is very simple. The order form is at the back of the menu, you just check off all the things you want, put your name at the top and give the form to the waiter. I dined here with a big group and the staff was very accommodating. Since they don't take reservations, I came early to put my name in. At first it was a table for 8 and then 12, and then it became 15. When the table was set for 12, we were already seated but the last 3 people decided to come so the staff had to add on another table. During this process of moving tables and chairs around the staff were really nice. None of them looked irritated. I've been to a lot of places were the staff would have already given me the look. Everyone's food came out at the same time and overall, everyone enjoyed their burgers. At the end of the night, I gave a good tip because I really appreciated the staff for not getting mad at us. The burgers were exactly what we wanted and I love that the sauces come on the side so I can mix and match with every bite. I ended up going with the Garlic Aioli, Basil Pesto and a Horseradish Aioli (that came with the sweet potato fries), but was also pretty delicious in my burger! 5 stars purely for the miracle that is the Impossible Burger. As a Canadian, we don't have the Impossible Burger anywhere and what a shame because it is brilliant. At $18 it's a giant burger that's plant based but you can select the level of cooking like a steak so I chose medium rare and it came out just like real meat! The miraculous thing is it taste just like real meat. Major game changer for vegetarian cuisine. The toppings the impossible burger came with was also delicious: avocado, goat cheese. I decided to visit The Counter because this was one of two burger shops highly recommended by my coworkers. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 2:45pm. The wait was 15 minutes. After being seated, the waiter explained the menu because we were first timers. He did an excellent job - front to back! The Build Your Own burger option was a little intimidating because I didn't want to create something that would end up costing me $15 for a mediocre taste. So, I ended up ordering a regular menu item, "The Official Counter Burger," from the Expert Builds menu. For 2 burgers and an order of sweet potato fries, it was 30 minutes until we got the burgers (10mins earlier for the fries). At 1/3lbs made Well Done, my Counter Burger looked mouthwatering delicious and was stacked to the ceiling! OMG. Felt like I was participating in a burger challenge for a minute. At first sight, I knew I wasn't going to fit that thing in my mouth, but I still tried. FAIL. I even compressed it, but that didn't work either. So, I ended up cutting it into small pieces. The beef patty was dry, so I used the sun-dried vinaigrette that accompanied the burger to make it savory. Altogether it was good. Not great, which I thought it was going to be. At this point I'd probably head to Islands or Honolulu Burger for my next burger. To finish the meal, we ordered a 20oz Chocolate shake split for two people. It was EXCELLENT! Recommended improvements: 1) Sweep floor before seating customers at table (my feet were slipping and sliding on gritty substances) 2) After wiping the table, please dry the table before placing the napkins and menus on top (it's just not sanitary) 3) Don't let lemonade and tea sit in an iced container because you'll end up watering the drinks down before they are served to customer Customer service was great. I will have to give the selections a 4 star, but the rating drop due to the quality of the meat. Both my H and I like our meat juicy, so we usually have it medium rare or medium, however, much to our disappointment, it's still dry. When my family wants a good burger or salad, we come here. I love the fact that you can create your own burgers, salads, or bowls. Also, the fries, garlic parm fries, sweet potato fries and the onion strings are all really good! My go to salad is: spinach, lettuce, quinoa, cranberries (I looove their cranberries here!), hard boiled egg, Brie cheese, avocado and a turkey burger patty .. All with ranch dressing. When we arrived for lunch, we were hungry and we requested an ever-popular booth against the wall. We were immediately seated by friendly and cheerful employees of The Counter and I immediately felt comfortable and valued here. I've never been to this restaurant before so I wasn't sure how the name worked into "The Counter" and the Bar to my right as we made our way to the booth..I knew this would be one of the first things I would try to figure out when we sat down. The ambiance here is great!..the booth seating is comfy..the a/c isn't too cold or too warm...immediately we asked for water and that was delivered in a snap. Our waitress was a delightful young woman who seemed to float in from somewhere behind the shared wall to our left. "The Counter" idea is written on that shared wall and is amazingly simple. The concept basically involves the inclusion of a "main" (sandwich/meat etc.), "side" (fries/shoestrings etc., "Stella" (I believe they called it?)..for a set price. I found during ordering with our pleasantly delightful waitress that substitutions can often be made..to which I did take advantage of on this day we visited The Counter. An extra fun thing is you can create a burger or a dish using their provided order form on their clip board (at each table) which the waitress uses to take your order back to the kitchen. It's a great way to help her **not** mess up your order details (don't forget that YOU wrote the details down), and you can play a fun game OR TWO of Hang-Man on the white sections of that order form while you're waiting for your waitress to come to take your order. Our food arrived in a timely manner and it was DELICIOUS!! We didn't know medium-well could be right...twice. The shoestring french fries were seasoned perfectly! Nothing at this restaurant was a negative today except the serving size was a bit much. This allows me to speak on the reheating ability. 5-stars overall for The Counter at the Kahala Mall from this Yelper. If you're looking for mouth-watering, juicy and plump burgers, this is the place for you. You may order their specialty burgers or custom build your own to your liking. Either way, you will not be disappointed. For vegans, they even have a burger for you! Prices are pretty reasonable. Expect to rip your mouth open. Their burgers are pretty massive so don't come here if you're are trying to look cute. I'm not much of a burger person so I usually get the cheese burger sliders and those bite sizes are packed with flavors. The boyfriend is the one who needs his burger fixed. No matter which burger he orders, he is never left unsettled. He never forgets his garlic aioli sauce too. So don't forget to try that! My weakness are fries and boy theirs are addicting! Wifey and I come here after we do our business inside the mall. We split a burger and of course get the LOADED TOTS!! Oh yeah and maybe a beer or two. OMG, the tots are crunchy outside and soft and hot inside. We've been here about 4-5 times... ok, maybe 7 times, by lookin at the amount of check-ins I have here. On the HH we tried the fried dill pickles, loaded tots, Two Mini Burgers (southern fried chicken, beef, and I think turkey) I remember the first two Minis, but maybe not the turkey... gotta ask wifey cause her memory is better. HH is M-F 3-6:30pm and the "drink a little" (HH drinks) are $5 each which is all 16oz drafts, signature wines, and well drinks. The HH "eat a little" foods are the Two Mini Burgers (southern fried chicken, beef, turkey, or veggie), 1/2 order grilled wings (sweet sriracha or buffalo sauces... you can ask for on the side), fried dill pickles, loaded tots, and parmesan fries. Tonight wifey and I split the $19 Bison is Gouda burger and the $10 Loaded Tots app. They always cut the burgers in 1/2 when we say we're gonna share it. The bacon on the loaded tots were extra crispy, which was a little unusual. We think they forgot it in the oven/salamander. No worries, we still ate every single little bit of "koge" bacon and oooey gooey cheese that was on the plate. Wifey totally loves the buttermilk ranch dip that comes with it. We usually order that with the fried pickles instead of the apricot sauce. That sauce doesn't quite go with the fried pickles. Oh and you know how most places over salt the fried pickles? No this place!! They make em juuuuus riiiight (Auntie Maria Lani speakin... hehehehe). Anyways, the bison burger was good, but we didn't think the flavors was worth the $19. The bacon onion marmalade kinda made it more on the sweet side with the richness of the sunny side up egg. Hmmm, lookin back at it there wasn't much spinach inside. The bison patty was a wee bit on the dry side (we asked for medium... shoulda asked for med-rare). Oh well, now we know. We did see our friend, Kimi, who is the GM there. She stopped by and said hi while makin her rounds to make sure everyone was taken care of... as usual. She's really good at makin sure every table is being taken care of. Keep up the good work! Great staff, burgers, and milkshakes! I would highly recommend and they are dog friendly. There is outdoor seating available and staff is friendly to animals. Some local beers on draft! I would recommend customizing your burger, as you can add what you want to it and you can also, customize shakes as well. Panda makes the best shakes and Max at the bar, is very easy going and gives attentive service! Ask about the Impossible and Bison burgers! This place has been here for a long time and my parents keep asking me to take them here. We live on the other side of the island so I finally took them here. My parents created their own burger/food and they were happy and it looked really good. It was happy hour time but it was not busy. The happy hour menu was a bit small, but there was a variety of drinks (forgot to take a picture). If you really like burgers the way you want it, this is the place to go. I ordered "The Counter" burger. I had it medium well and the burger was so nice and moist, just the way I like it. It was not over cooked or burnt at all. The burger was very tasteful and I like how they gave me a little container of sauce. It was prefect for my fries. There is a variety of sides to choose from to go with the burgers. The restaurant was clean, there is a bar with a TV to watch sports, the bathroom was clean, and staff was welcoming and nice. Creating your own burger adds up to each item, so the bill was a bit pricey. It was worth the experience. It was about an hour before they closed so there was no wait (winning). All of us got a spiked shake with a custom burger. The dreamsicle was so good! I definitely recommend this one if you ever had an Orange Julius. You can't even taste the liquor. Just straight deliciousness. The burgers were amazing! The patty was thicc, juicy, and flavorful. The selection of toppings is awesome! You can really pile it up if you want. Some items cost extra, but for the most part, they are complimentary. I got the shoestring fries to go along with my burger because you have to have something crispy with a burger. They were da bomb dot com (thin, crispy, and seasoned well). Our waitress was fantastic! I forgot her name, but she did a great job serving us while closing the store down for the night. We felt bad we were there so late, but she gave us great service regardless. Decided to give this place a shot and ended up with an undercooked burger. After paying the amount that I did, I am very disappointed. The overall presentation was messy and tasted plain before spitting the food back out after noticing it wasn't cooked enough.. read more
