Pulled Pork Sandwich
Ronnie K.

Location is great. I did feel like the seating along the river is a little tight. There people at the table behind us kept bumping into me. And the bricks under the table were extremely uneven, which made our table not sit straight. Service was great, no complaints there. We ordered deep-fried pickles, the pulled pork sandwich and light brisket platter. Everything was good except the pulled pork sandwich, which I was very disappointed in. The sides with the brisket were a little bland. But the brisket was great!!

Stopped by The County Line on the San Antonio Riverwalk and the atmosphere is definitely the highlight. It's right on the water and sitting outside makes for great people-watching -- perfect spot if you want to enjoy the Riverwalk vibe while you eat. The servers were friendly and welcoming, which added to the experience. We tried the fried pickles to start. They were spears instead of slices, which was a first for me. The flavor was fine, but the batter slid off pretty easily, making them a little awkward to eat. For my main, I ordered the light brisket plate with potato salad and coleslaw. The brisket was just okay -- a bit tough and came out cold. The sides were average and didn't really stand out. I also had a glass of wine, but nothing memorable there either. Overall, there are definitely better barbecue spots in San Antonio if you're looking for top-tier food. But for the Riverwalk location, friendly service, and fun atmosphere -- especially outdoors -- it's a solid option if you're prioritizing the view and people-watching over the meal.

While you are in Texas you must have BBQ. Riverwalk worker recommended this place. I had a pulled pork sandwich loaded with pulled pork, and coleslaw. The only thing that was different, the coleslaw was in chunks not shreds. Flavor okay. Margarita came with a tumbler. Great for the price of $14. Outdoor seating, and the service was good. Place filled up quickly mid-afternoon.

See my Google review for this place! ! WOW-WOW-WOW! Great food, perfect pricing (not Riverwalk overpriced) and great service! I brought my two Japanese teenage cousins and we ate on the patio. They had never tried BBQ so this restaurant needed to impress! That's when Kevin B our server introduced himself! Such a great personality! Suggested some amazing items, both chose the combo platters (so they could taste a variety) and i had the loaded baked potato topped with brisket! They both gave the food 12/10 stars and i am sure, will be back to try BBQ again! When in San Antonio, I highly suggest this restaurant- the location, prices, amount of food was literally, PERFECT! Thanks Kevin for the excellent service!

Cool spot! I stopped here off the Riverwalk for dinner. I ordered the two meat plate with brisket and sausage; the sides were potato salad and mac and cheese. I was a little disappointed that the brisket was on the tough side. It had a noticeable smoke ring and great flavor. The sausage was good and had a little spice to it. The potato salad and mac and cheese were great. Service was quick and courageous and the prices were good, considering the touristy location.

I got the three meat plate - brisket, ribs, pulled pork, beans, mac 'n cheese, and the queso & chips appetizer. The only good things were the queso and chips & my server. The brisket is pale like it was boiled or something. The ribs were tough and chewy. The pulled pork was in some sort of disgusting liquid. The mac and cheese was mushy and the beans were horrible. I came here because Pinkerton's was closed due to it being Monday. Lesson learned.

What do I have to say about this place- 1st of all Manuel is very friendly and told us the best drinks to get. He always made sure we were good and our drinks never got empty. The menu has a lot of great items, but whatever you get it's always delicious. We loved the food & it was absolutely fantastic! The atmosphere was very lazy back and very quiet. Loved how clean it was and tables were not sticky at all!!! Definitely always a favorite for us and it never fails to amaze us!

Brisket, dryyyyyyyyyy

This food was so dry. The brisket had no flavor, Cole slaw bland, sauces weren't that good.

Great BBQ at very good prices right on the Riverwalk. You can smell smoke. This is real deal BBQ. Husband & I had the platter and we both indulged and took some home. It was like $35. The drinks were good. The loaf of bread came out hot with soft creamy butter. The brisket was tender and didn't need sauce. The chicken was juicy and cooked perfectly. The sausage had a little kick and was the first meat we ate. So good. Highly recommend!!

They have salads and sandwiches back! The server struggled with simple words like "fries," but he was pleasant enough, if preoccupied with the table behind us. The turkey was moist and flavorful, but nothing was hot - the only detractor. We had mediocre experiences that few visits, but they have absolutely redeemed themselves!

We arrived around 5pm on a Thursday and got in queue which was out the door and wrapping around the front porch. Their host/doorman was kind, he offered the line water on many occasions and made pleasantries with almost all guests as the line moved. It was a hot day so those waters were clutch. By the time we made it to the front of order line maybe 40 minutes had passed. But ladies and gents the wait is worth it. When we plated our trays on the table my family all had heart eyes, and had equally loved our first bites. Their brisket is extremely tender. It's beautifully sliced and made for an amazing welcome back to the South taste for me. I was in heaven. I particularly enjoyed having the fresh pickled red onion for fresh, zesty cuts through the abundance of other saltier elements on the plate. Their menu is slammin! Their sides, and sausages all had crafty ingredients. I enjoyed their spicy link options and their macaroni was delightful. Their BBQ sauce was a nice 4/5 but certainly did the job. As a native Texan who's had their fair share, this was easily some of the best barbecue I've ever had. Top 5 top 5 top 5. I'm of course coming back and looking forward for more banana cream pudding especially. They were small, slightly sweet, and had great balance with the vanilla wafer ratio. That whip cream on top too had me hooked. I couldn't have asked for a better welcome back meal for the bold Texas cuisine, hospitality, and novelty animal and cowboy decor.

Favorite item was the Alamo huevos rancheros. This was a rare treat to enjoy a dish with brisket, cheese, and salsa without some kind of heartburn afterwards. But this was lighter than expected and tasted amazing! Other dishes we tried: Egg white frittata: very good and a nice touch that it is served in a skillet! Texas waffle: was one of the best waffles either of us has had in a long time Blueberry pancakes: very good. I really enjoyed the stewed blueberry Chilaquiles: this we felt was the only miss. Didn't like that it was prepared with tortilla chips instead of fried tortillas Steak and eggs: ask for extra chimichurri sauce and maybe add some extra salt. Once you do that, this dish is fantastic Avocado toast: this definitely needs smoked salmon or other protein. Otherwise it isn't very substantial. I had it with smoked salmon and it really hit the spot. The service was polite and attentive. We're excited to return for our next visit

I had made reservations to meet some friends here for brunch/lunch 1145 am on a Sunday. This place is bigger than it looks! There's seating at the main building, plus a huge outdoor patio seating area, and an entire other building beautifully decorated. The hostess was welcoming and friendly and our server was excellent. We were seated in the other building near the windows. The menu wasn't huge, but just right with a few lunch and brunch items. After debating for a while of what to order, I decided on the Texas Gulf Shrimp plate. Agua Fresca of the day per our server was strawberry pineapple. Our server was able to water mine down slightly- since it was very sweet, but love knowing that it was freshly made. Complimentary chips and salsa always a plus, and we were able to order some spicy salsa to accompany at no charge. My shrimp plate was delicious! 2 skewers of nicely cooked and seasoned shrimp atop salsa with perfectly cooked cilantro rice and a fresh leaf salad. A half slices avocado accompanied my plate. Oh how I love avocados. I thoroughly enjoyed my plate. The chicken al carbon was also a good choice - half a chicken that was juicy, not dry. The avocado toast was beautiful and the pecan salsa was quite interesting. The female performers during our brunch in the room, made it very hard for all of us to have conversations. The volume echoed loudly in the room, so it was very hard to speak and understand each other. Although a great idea, maybe outdoor patio area might be more suitable. Beautiful space, great service, good food.

It is served over green curry, which also happens to be my favorite! The brisket is served on top of the curry bowl, so I first tried just the meat. It was fall apart tender, perfectly moist, and full of flavor! I would pick their brisket over most other BBQ joints in a heartbeat! Next up was the curry by itself. It was also delicious and filled with potatoes and carrots! I am used to green curry being pretty spicy, but this is definitely a milder green curry. When I mixed the brisket in it was the perfect combination! The smokey meat blended with the curry spices was a delight to the palette, and it was just the right amount of food for a big and hungry guy like me! Update to first review below, rating updated from a 3 to a 5 star (drinks & bartender would get 10+…read morestars if we could rate that high): Saturday night: Went back for after dinner drinks at the Downstairs (a "speakeasy" throwback, look up the history of the place to see why). Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
