After years of wondering what exactly a crumpet is, I finally got my answer of all places in Seattle. The Crumpet Shop is well known and has a street facing entrance on first ave, so no hilly climb or descent to eat here. We actually stopped in here twice during our stay for breakfast because it was so quick and convenient. I got the smoked salmon cream cheese topped with fresh cucumbers and it was light yet filling at the same time. Also there is endless refills on tea and coffee. My bf got himself a bowl of groats which he enjoyed- he did say it was a bit more sweet than he anticipated so next time he got it he asked to leave out the brown sugar. The wait was pretty long after we ordered and there was almost no seating, so we took it to-go. We ordered the Mickey Rourke and the Vermont for a sweet and savory combo. The Mickey Rourke contains egg, English cheese, jalapeño peppers, ham, and cream cheese. It was light and good, but I'm a heavy sauce/flavor type of gal so I really wish I had gotten some hot sauce that was available on the counter before we left, to add onto and take it to the next level. Ugh ugh! This review is so hard! I remember when I was a kid and we would go to Pike Place market We would always go to the crumpet shop. I don't know why, my family wasn't huge crumpet people, but we would always go here every trip that we would make. I have such fond memories of this place as a kid. Maybe it's that it doesn't live up to the nostalgia infused memories that I have. But I have been really disappointed the last couple of times that I've gone to this shop as we were visiting the market. First of all, it's crazy busy. I know that everything at the market is busy, and I know that part of this is that I'm a victim of visiting at peak times. The complaint here isn't really that it's busy, the complaint is that they're bad at handling it when it's busy. The workers are almost exclusively rough, short with people, act like they don't have time. The line moves really quickly, but the crumpets take a long time to come out, so that just leads to there being a backlog of people waiting for their food. There's very limited seating. And you end up just standing around awkwardly looking for a place to eat, a place to sit, or a place to wait for your crumpet. It's also crazy expensive. When you get what eventually comes out I always end up thinking, "how can this be this expensive?" It turns something that's supposed to be a treat into something that feels like a rip off. The last thing that I'm going to say, and I feel really bad saying it, the crumpets just aren't that good. I don't really know what a good crumpet is, but we've had a couple lately that have tasted stale? It's just heartbreaking. I want to remember this place for how much I loved it as a kid, so I think that's why it still gets three stars, but I'll be honest I don't think that I will make a point of going here the next time we visit the market. For me, crumpet is like something in between English muffin and pancake mochi. It is moist chewy, not dry. I kinda like the texture actually. I ordered the original and toasted, and the seattle crumpets. It tasted better when you eat it right away. There's small sitting area inside, but very stuffy and tight.
