I had heard of the Daily Catch location in the North End, but was surprised and thrilled to learn that they had a location in Brookline near my Airbnb. So after a movie at Coolidge Corner Theatre (I really enjoyed my Brookline experience), I walked over for solo dinner at the Daily Catch. I knew it was popular and that there would be a line. There was. I got in the line around 6:30 on a Saturday night, and around 7:30, I was in. So, yeah, be prepared to stand outside and wait. Why are you waiting? They have SEVEN tables. SEVEN! (Three four-tops and four two-tops, I think.) One chef, one dishwasher, one waitress, one busboy (I think). It's TINY. Tiny, tiny, tiny. So, after I got inside, I was hungry and ready to try some of what makes the Daily Catch so talked about. I ordered wine to start, because that's how I do dinner. Then I ordered the stuffed calamari as an appetizer (stuffed with "Sicilian stuffing" - pine nuts and raisins, and served in a red sauce). Filling? Great. Sauce? TO DIE FOR (I sopped the leftover sauce up with my bread so I wouldn't waste a drop). I found the calamari itself maybe the slightest bit tough, but still a very good appetizer. At $12.50 for two pieces, it was a good appetizer for me, since I was eating solo. Then I ordered a half portion of their black pasta (which you can order as aglio e olio, alfredo, or putanesca). Their house-made squid ink pasta was great. I ordered it aglio e olio (ground calamari, olive oil, garlic, and parsley), and it was great. It's served in the pan, which was a fun, rustic touch, and probably cuts down on dishes for such a small place! I loved that they offer their pastas in half or full orders! Perfect for a solo dinner so I could get an appetizer as well. After another glass of wine, I ordered a slice of their cake to go. This was the least successful thing I ordered at the Daily Catch. Way too sweet for my taste. But the rest of the meal was fantastic. And the service was great. And the atmosphere is great. It was just a really good meal. Great coastal Italian. If you like seafood and Italian food, check out one of their locations (I suspect that the North End location has even longer lines, though)! read more

Wow. What can I say!? The food is worth the wait for sure. There is limited seating, maybe roughly 10 tables total. We waited probably an hour or so. I came with a party of 3. We ordered Aglio olio and the World famous Lobster platter to share. It is definitely a good amount of food for 3 people. The seafood was amazing, and the black ink pasta is very savory. One of my favorite places in Boston! A MUST go to restaurant! The place is small, but I think that's part of the beauty of it. We waited for around an hour, which was fine to me cause I know the food it definitely worth it. It's definitely a nice date place, but also a very nice place to come for a casual meal, If you're coming here, I'd recommend getting here a bit earlier than your usual dinner time to ensure that you're able to grab a table. Calamari Definitely does not disappoint. The sauce is delicious, and the calamari is so crispy and unique. There's something about the batter that makes it all super delicious. It tastes very fresh. Last night in Boston and I decided to close it out at the Daily Catch. I'd been there before and had the Aglio Olio, which is ground calamari with black pasta. Very good. This time I got their specialty: the Lobster d something. This dish has almost everything seafood in it: lobstah, calamari, shrimp, clams, and mussels. I love all of these generally. This had the potential to be really great but fell short because it wasn't seasoned very well. Definitely not worth the $60 price tag for taste but not bad for quantity. This place is small, but there seems to have steady foot traffick so I would advise going when they open (or within an hour or two of opening) if you are able to and want to avoid waiting. read more

This is a very expensive disappointment. I dont really understand what is the hype with the Lobster Diavolo. The sauce is really bland. Usually you can taste a blend of wine, garlic and basil in Italian red sauce. Their red sauce is just pretty. $84 for 2 serving of Lobster Diavolo is just over priced. After a couple of min, the noodle got soggy, making the whole eating experience worse. Really disappointed! The black pasta aquillo on the contrary was really good. It's garlicky with plenty of calamari. This dish get the restaurant 1 star. Their World famous fried Calamari was soggy, and the batter was sweet. Not pleasant! Shrimp Scampi appetizer was okay. My partner has been raving about this restaurant ever since I told him I was craving pasta on our Boston trip. It's a Hole in the wall, local restaurant with dishes made with fresh ingredients. With only a couple of tables, the restaurant gets quite busy at dinnertime and especially on weekends, and since they don't take reservations, you can wait for over an hour or two on the busier days. However, I guarantee that the wait is worth it. When we went, we got lucky and was seated almost right away. We ordered the Aglio Olio, Clams Casino, North End Style Swordfish, and house recommended red wine. Our order also came with rustic style bread in a basket, which the waiter was more than happy to refill for us when we asked for more. Even during covid times, The Daily Catch continues to be one of the best italian dining options, not just in Brookline, but all of Boston. Its incredibly fresh and powerfully small menu is a testament to excellent tradition, based on ingredient quality and simple but impecable preparation. The service today Jan 13th was outstanding, courteous and accommodating of our party, even when we took so much of the little space allowed in covid restrictions. Regardless, we were not hurried and actually felt right at home in the cozy establishment. Many kudos to the staff that works so hard to make us feel welcome in these trying conditions. This place has been recommended to me a lot, and I'm definitely glad I came here. My friends and I came here on a Wednesday night and we were seated right away. The waiter was nice, and recommended that we try the Fried Calamari. Definitely a good choice. I ended up ordering the Aglio Olio. This is the first time I've had black squid ink linguine and it's worth trying. The sautéed ground calamari was a nice touch. I also had some of my fiancés Puttanesca, another black ink pasta dish, and I think I might recommend that one. I left most of the pasta and some shrimp on my plate because there was no purpose eating more. The tables had piles of dirty napkins under the tables to steady them. The small restaurant looked like it could use a good cleaning. The waiter was cordial. Had he asked how the meal was, I would have told him. The Daily Catch has always had a good reputation. They're cranking out to go orders at the speed of sound on a Saturday night. The waiter controls the waitlist (all in his head), seating, taking orders (also in his head), serving and clearing. It's been 8 years since we last came here. Hubs missed this place a lot during the pandemic. So, the minute we planned on coming back to the area, we decided to try this place instead of the one on Hanover Street figuring that it would be easier to find a parking spot. We were right, we found a space a couple of blocks away within seconds. Better than driving around and around and getting frustrated! We got here soon after it opened. The larger tables were mostly occupied except for one. We managed to grab that last table and 5 minutes later, a party of 3 came in. They were told to come back 45 minutes later. We got really lucky! The restaurant is small, with eight tables max for seating. Small white lamps with paint spots hang over some of the tables while similar-looking sconces adorn the leftmost wall. You can also see into the kitchen as well. Hubs ordered the lobster fra diavolo for one, which has 1 1/4 lb live lobster cut into pieces with littlenecks, mussels, shrimp and calamari simmered in a "spicy" seafood tomato sauce served over linguine. He thought it was really good. It was easily his second favorite dish but I already ordered his first favorite dish, which was the monkfish marsala. However, he might have a brand new number one and it was what our daughter ordered. OMG, trifecta galore! LOL I ordered the monkfish marsala which has tender medallions of monkfish simmered with mushrooms in a sweet marsala sauce. I thought it was okay but it was a little winey for me. They're nice in that they'll seat you before your entire party arrives so you're not freezing to death in the cold. Hostess was very warm and welcoming and provided great service! I ordered the black squid ink pasta with white sauce and scallops. It was pretty good, but I'm not sure whether it's worth the price point, dish came out to around $30. The food comes out in a pan (which I assumed they cook the pasta in). Small Fried Calamari - Some of the softest calamari I've had. A generous portion, also came with fresh marinara. Shrimp & Scallop Pasta - I prefer white sauce, red sauce in my experience has a pretty heavy wine taste. Seafood so tender, the scallops make this dish. Black Ink Pasta - The Aglio Olio is my favorite, simple enough to appreciate each ingredient in comparison to the other black ink pastas! Best pasta I've had, perfect texture, especially with the ground squid. We came on a not too hungry stomach, and took leftovers of both pastas! Service is wonderful as always, and food comes out at a natural pace. This place is ridiculous... The servers are rude, the restaurant is constantly understaffed and pays little attention to the customers, and the wait is so long it's never worth it. I've tried to go there three times in the last two weeks and every time I went, this restaurant is ALWAYS CLOSED even on saturdays, Sunday's and Mondays. Closing for three days a week is ridiculous, and then these clowns dare put up a sign on their window that says "always open everyday", is that a JOKE? Finally on a day that I went and it was open, I couldn't even get in the door without the waiter rushing me out telling me to wait outside with everyone else. You'd think the waiter would come out, take my phone number and name and put me on a waiting list but NOPE; the restaurant is so understaffed that the waiter completely disregarded everyone waiting outside. My DC was wanting the fried calamari ($9 small). Me, I was hankering for the aglio olio black ink pasta ($11, appetizer portion). We figured it would be less busy at this Brookline branch of the North End institution located on Harvard Street. It is a little place, but still larger than the original, and more comfortable casual than the spartan casual casual of said original. The kitchen is open, just like at the North End, and they have a single person bathroom (no idea if there are any bathrooms, well, for customers' use, at the other). A single waitress manned the dinner crowd, of which we were one of the first. In addition to the dishes we had pre-ordered in our minds, we opted for the caprese salad $9 and one of the dinner specials off the board - Salmon with roasted fingerling potatoes, sauteed baby spinach, lemon dill yogurt. No price was listed, but when the bill came, we found out it was $26. The calamari was tasty and good portioned as a small for two to share, but a bit overfried. It also wasn't as amazing as my friend remembered. The pasta was as garlicky and chopped calamari good as I recollected, though my friend thought the al dente pasta nothing special in comparison to your average off-white stuff. The fish and all of its components - though on the light side in terms of portion - was quite tasty, but my friend's favorite dish of the night was the fresh caprese salad. For dessert, they offered two options - tiramisu and lemon cake. Nope, they don't make it themselves; they import the lemon cake all the way from Italy. Well, no matter - lemon calls me, so I tried it. It was moist and sweet, while not too sweet, and tasty. And it cost about $6. Yup, it was good. But my, was I full. Worlds best may still be Carmines in NY. - Clams casino were damn good. Garlic, and bread crumbs lathered the clam. Lots of flavor. - Clam over black ink pasta was near PERFECTION. I went to the north bay location three years ago and remembered how good it was and made a point to go to at least one of the locations. We drove in traffic for 45 minutes to get here and it was WORTH IT. This location does take credit cards by the way, so you don't need to pull out cash prior. We got garlic bread which was to die for. The best garlic bread I've had in my whole life hands down. Then my friend ordered the clams and white sauce pasta and I did the shrimp and scallops white sauce pasta. It was amazing and absolutely didn't disappoint. Came here at almost 7pm on Tuesday, and thank god there was no wait. When we were finished at around 8 though, there were a few parties waiting outside in the freezing cold weather since they didn't have any space/waiting area inside. The restaurant was small and quiet, and the few tables they had filled up the whole restaurant so you can't even stand inside to wait. We ordered the garlic bread to start, which was nice and crispy, and I got the half size black ink spaghetti with ground calamari. It was really good and very filling, given that it was drenched in oil. The half size was definitely more than enough for me/a regular appetite. The spaghetti noodles were kind of like linguine but black, and it was mixed with a lot of garlic and ground up pieces of calamari. My friend got the stuffed calamari that came with red sauce and spaghetti, and it was also delicious. I definitely recommend the black ink spaghetti though, especially if you have the option to get the half size (option only available for black spaghetti dishes) since the full size would have been way too much. I personally like oil/garlic sauces better than red sauces too, but there just wasn't much seafood in my dish. It was mainly just the pasta noodles with a bit of calamari sprinkled/mixed in, so it would have been nice if there was some sort of protein side (like the stuffed calamari + spaghetti dish) instead of just straight carbs. Overall though, you can get some decent Italian food and fresh seafood here. I'll come back to try their other pasta and fresh fish! read more
