There was tons of hype on my walk to The Daily Catch with my best friend right before it was opening for the day. Would we be able to get a table? She had been turned away in the past when the tiny dining room was too full. It was her favorite restaurant in the area and we were hoping to try it together! Well, I guess not too many people eat at 2 pm on a Sunday because we were the first ones there (although several tables started to fill up throughout our meal). There was one cook in a small open kitchen and one server. A restrained menu offered a bunch of seafood pastas, some seafood appetizers, fish dishes, and their famous homemade black pasta. Was it worth the hype? Absolutely. We tried the black pasta aglio olio and it had a wonderful chewy texture and delicious garlicky flavor with bits of squid throughout! Meanwhile, we also shared the shrimp and scallops pasta in white wine sauce with broccoli. That pasta itself (linguine) wasn't homemade, but it was tasty with the perfectly cooked and tender sweet scallops and pink shrimp. It was swimming in sauce, but it was light and not greasy. This is the perfect spot to get simply but deliciously prepared pasta and very fresh fish. Definitely don't miss the black pasta! Also, the portions are pretty substantial. But this place is different, you'll have to wait outside until the server come out and ask you how many people. If they have the table for the number of ppl, you can go in. If not, you keep waiting. It was raining that day, imagine waiting in the cold and snow during the winter time? I wouldn't... We waited outside for about 30 Min. They are known for their lobster fra diavolo but we decided not to get that because it would be too much for the two of us. Here's what we got: 1. Black pasta aglio olio full size $24: the pasta itself tasted just like regular pasta, nothing special other than the color. The ground calamari, garlic and other seasonings made it delicious. It would be perfect with more salt though. 2. Calamari platter: it came with a lot of french fries other than the fried calamari, calamari meatball, fried whitefish, and stuff calamari. The Daily Catch is a very small seafood joint with 2 locations. We waited about 20 minutes before it was our turn for a group of 5. We ordered a bunch of dishes to eat family style. It was agreed that the Black Pasta Aglio Olio (get the full, not half) was our favorite because unlike normal pasta, it maintains and absorbs the seafood broth very well. I waited in line for an hour in the rain to eat at The Daily Catch and it did not disappoint! As other yelpers have mentioned this is a very small restaurant with no place to wait inside. I ended up going with a friend at around 6:30pm on a Saturday and we were thankful that there were only two of us. If you have a party greater than four I would suggest checking out one of their other locations as there are only four tables of four in the entire place. The only reason I did not give the restaurant 5 stars is because they do not check in with their guests outside about how many people they have in their party until tables open up. I feel as though their planning could have been a bit better since a party of 5 was stuck waiting for quite some time. My friend and I split a bottle of white wine and started with the small order of calamari (definitely enough for two people) which was very good! I ordered the Monkish Marsala and my friend ordered the North End Style Swordfish. Once her meal came out I definitely had food FOMO, but the Monkfish Marsala was also very good. Most meals are served with either a side salad or pasta. What I like most about the side pasta option is that the pasta is tossed in the same sauce as your meal instead of a generic red sauce. Keep in mind that due to the small size of the restaurant the only pasta choice they have is linguine, but it was cooked to perfection and left me wanting more! Overall I would definitely suggest coming in if you live in the Brookline/Allston area. I came here on a Sunday afternoon because I really wanted to get some italian/pasta in before I left Boston. I came at 2pm on the dot, when they opened but unfortunately they were not ready open. The guy said it would be another half hour. I wasn't sure what to do so I just walked to the jewish bookstore nearby and chilled there since it was so cold outside. But all in all, this place was worth the wait! I got there at around 2:30pm and there were at least 3 or 4 tables available. I ordered: Cherrystone clams (5/5) - $11 for 6 of these bad boys. They tasted super fresh, briny and delicious. Keep in mind these are bigger and meatier than the littleneck clams which they also have. Aglio Olio (5/5) - Loved this too. I got the half order for $14.50 so that I could stuff myself with more food later. The chopped calamari in it was very tender and the pasta was perfectly cooked. The dish could have used a tad bit more salt or seasoning but I'm not complaining... this dish was bomb. Overall - I would def come back to this place if I'm in Boston again. Small restaurant w/no waiting area inside = high chance you will be waiting for a spot outside, regardless of the weather. I came here with my girlfriend for dinner a few months back. Honestly I think the food is just average and not worth it for the price or the wait to get a table. The restaurant is tiny with only a couple tables and always has a long wait. There is no room to wait inside so you have to wait out on the sidewalk. I do not recommend coming here late, or on a cold or rainy night as your wait will be very unpleasant. The food itself I think is average. The seafood tasted very fresh but my dish overall was bland and the sauce/broth was too watery and didn't have much flavor. With all of the other options around Boston for fresh seafood and Italian food, I will probably try somewhere else next time and save myself from standing out on the sidewalk in the cold to wait for a table. I think they have the best fried calamari in Boston but the last time we went it felt like it was a little burnt. I love the fra diavolo - it comes with lobster, mussels, clams and shrimps. First of all... we want right when it opened at 4pm, so we didn't have to wait. Unfortunately, it took about an hour to get our food since there was only once cook and one server. Daily Catch has been on my yelp bucket list for 5 years now. So when the opportunity presented itself and luckily for me I was being treated I had to go. Space: Very intimate and not a lot of space. So tables are close to each other. There are only two waiting seats all the way in the back. So if it's cold you'd do better waiting in a car or bundling up very good. Service: very good and not invasive. There no pretentious undertones which I loved. Too many places rely too much on acting like the best instead of simply being the best. Our waitress was awesome and I even got to meet the chef seeing as we were the last table there (oops) the chef was really awesome and you could tell he takes pride in his food Ambience: absolutely quaint, dimly lit and romantic. You would think with a packed house it would be loud but it was actually quiet enough to enjoy good conversation and not overhear everyone else. I think this must have took some planning and I commend the owners & staff. Wine List: wine list is beautifully curated and the waitress was very good at explaining. We ended up order a bottle of red. I'll update when I remember the name. It was very good and smooth. It's actually one of the best reds I've ever had. Food: now this is the lure. Everything is caught fresh daily. So you know the seafood you're eating is as fresh as can be. Scallops: 5/5 my dinner companion whose is an absolute foodie and has about 40 years on me in age said that might be the best scallops she's ever had in the last decade. 3.5 - I've been dying to try the one in the North End but the line is outrageous at every time of the day, every day of the week so I decided to check out this branch instead. Not impressed with their food but service was good. Our party got the clams casino for starters. Clams were fresh but the stuffing didn't taste good. I got the classic white clam linguine, my friends ordered the white shrimp and scallop broccoli linguine, red stuffed calamari linguine, and lastly the aglio olio squid ink pasta. My white claim linguine was topped with an abundance of clam pieces which I thoroughly enjoyed. All of our pasta were good but not great. Out of the four dishes, I recommend the white clam linguini and the aglio olio. A Brookline staple, the place you're told to go when you visit. Sat inside during winter, but would love to return to experience the patio. Inside is small, avoid with large groups. Dishes come out from the open kitchen in sauce pans, service is just as homely and friendly. My friend had been there before so she was able to make some great recommendations for me. This place is also doing things right when it comes to social distancing. The portion size is more than enough for two people to share .The only thing I was lacking was some fresh bread to serve up with the mussels because the broth was so divine. For mains my friend got the monkfish and I got the Squid Ink pasta with Alfredo Sauce. Again portion sizes are super impressive. You can tell that the pasta is made fresh as well. Walked past the store in the North End a few times and the line was quite long (the store is tiny), so we decided to go to the one in Brookeline. We came on a weekday around 6:30pm and to our surprise there was no line at all! The restaurant started to fill up around 7:30pm. A friend and I shared the Lobster Fra Diavolo (seafood pasta) and the Aglio Olio (squid ink pasta with garlic and sautéed squid). I was actually quite disappointed with the Lobster pasta because it wasn't as flavorful as I had expected--I had high expectations because of the long lines and great reviews. The squid ink pasta on the other hand completely blew my mind. It was amazing. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and although the squid, garlic, and olive oil seemed like a simple combination, it was the perfect combination of ingredients and it drew out the squid ink flavor in the pasta. Amazing. We didn't order an appetizer because there was complimentary bread (was whatever) and we knew the pasta would be enough. Alright guys, there was so much hype, it's finally a quiet Monday night and I decided to try my luck at the Daily Catch. 30min wait, it's warm out, not a big deal. The inside is small, simple, open kitchen in the back, we always get unlucky and get a wobbly table, not a big deal. A decent looking menu with lots of pasta choices, as well as handful of wines by the glass of all Italian origin. There was only 1 waitress and 1 cook for the entire place, but they were actually quite efficient in getting the guests in and the food out. Fried calamari appetizer: Different style of breading than I'm used to, but pretty thin. Was actually enjoying this dish until my husband pulled a strand of a steel brush out of one of the pieces. We told the waitress and she just said "oh that's from the brush we use to clean the pans" and "that's weird". Yes thank you we realized what it was... No apologies what so ever and we were still charged for the dish. That's completely unacceptable for almost having swallowed a piece of metal. You're looking at 2-3 stars max already at this point... Pasta dishes: I would agree that all the pastas are nice and al dente, but seemed a bit uninspiring to have only 2 choices either linguine or squid ink pasta, and they're not even home made. - Black pasta aglio e olio: Garlicky in a good way, but waaaay salty. I was chugging my wine and water at the same time. The North End Daily Catch is the more famous location, but the Brookline location has all of the same elements: fresh seafood, authentic Italian food, and an intimate atmosphere. The "World Famous" fried calamari was good, but not amazing (I prefer Giacomo's, but that's just me). The Roasted Red Pepper Salad was great to share with one other person - the salads are pretty big! The Mussels Siciliano is also good and very fresh, but I've had better mussels at a few other Boston hotspots. The real standout was the Aglia Olio black squid ink pasta. I don't care if you're intimated by the thought of black squid ink in your pasta - try this dish! It has fresh ground calamari in the pasta - again I know it sounds different, but it's fantastic We added fresh shrimp to the pasta, which was a steal at only $3! You can also get scallops in the pasta as well. Next time I'll probably get both! (FYI, the people we were with said it wasn't quite as good as the black squid ink pasta they had in Cinque Terre, Italy, but was close...) The service was great. We waited about 20 minutes for a table (note that there really isn't room to wait inside). Our waitress was super flexible and gave great recommendations.
