The Dog House or as we call it "The Foggy Doggy" is one of the wife and I's favorite places to eat when we journey to the beach. It's pretty much hidden from Hwy 1 but you may notice a few signs set up to direct you to the small road next to the ocean which The Dog House resides on. Cute ambiance with a Likable locals type of vibe. This place makes burgers in a longer style that more closely resemble hot dogs but with a wider patty than a hotdog but longer than a burger patty. The burgers are absolutely fantastic and if you order french fries you can get free refills upon request. Last time the wife and I were here it was in the middle of an intense lunchtime rush and we had to ask 3 times and wait 25 minutes before we got additional fries but it's hard to hold it against them due to how consistently good the burgers, fries, and onion rings consistently are. The only downfall with ordering onion rings is that they don't have free refills but they are dang good onion rings, but I usually prefer to just get a lot of fries rather than a few delicious onion rings. But if you go with a partner the pro move is to get one order of onion rings and the other person gets the refillable order of fries. Also they have a great condiment bar with different kinds of sauces, and toppings so that you can dress your burger or hotdog up in any style that you prefer. Our experience was disappointing. It is really a "walk-up" spot, with a handful of seats available inside, and a few picnic style tables outside, shared with the ice cream/coffee stand next door. None of the outside tables offered shade, and if you wanted them cleaned you are on your own. We chose The Dog House based on the reviews of the food, and our party's experience was mixed regarding taste. One of our party of four ordered the steak sandwich ($16.00 w/fries), they said it was very good, despite being served on a hot dog bun. Another in our party ordered the garlic sausage dog ($13.00 w/fries), they reviewed it as "fine", once they added condiments. The party that ordered the cheeseburger. They said it was good (also on a hotdog bun), it came plain, they added accompaniments from the condiment bar themselves. The last item ordered, from the "specials" board was pretty terrible. It was supposed to be a "philly steak" sandwich, with beef, cheese and grilled onions and peppers. Instead, it was deli beef, heated on the grill (so it was dry), with a slice of melted white American cheese over pickeled jalapeños. Not what was pictured on the board, certainly not a philly cheesesteak sandwich, and it was the most expensive sandwich at $18.00 w/fries. When the person who ordered the sandwich asked the staff about it they were told those were the peppers they had, and the grilled onions were under the peppers (they were not). Everyone agreed that the fries were pretty good (though not salted or seasoned at all, again, a do it yourself thing), and while they advertise unlimited fries, it had taken about 25 minutes to get the food, so no one was interested in waiting for more. The bill for our party, including 2 canned sodas and 2 bottled lemonades was around $82, which seems very expensive for hot dog stand food served in paper trays, and the hot dog stand "ambience". One star off for the value for price paid, and we won't go again. read more

It was such a beautiful day that we took a drive to Bodega Bay today and had lunch at The Dog House. We started out with Burgers and while ordering we noticed they had a few specials available. We chose to go with the Crab Nachos, and we actually got the last order of the day. The Crab Nachos were divine, the crab was sweet and plentiful. The cheese and other sauce that gave it a little kick was absolutely delicious. We were in awe by how delicious they were. The half and third pound Burgers were juicy and the perfect size. We also really enjoy that they let you put on your own condiments and have many options to spruce up your order, if you ever get the chance try their homemade 1000 island on pretty much anything (we pretty much dream about it). We've been coming to The Dog House for years and the service is exceptional, the ladies who run it are super sweet and always greet us with a smile. Even though we are not locals to the coast, when we come to The Dog House it feels like we are at our hometown feel good restaurant. Lastly, we were so excited when we pulled in the parking lot to see a sign that said fresh crab! There was a local fisherman selling crabs, and we bought a few to enjoy at home. All the condiments are on a bar near the front door which is stupid because people are trying to get in the door and others are waiting for their turn for the onions and pickles. Being close to closing (I guess?? 45 minutes isn't that close!), the condiment bar was nearly empty. Barely anything left but it was ok, all we wanted was some onion and then sauce. The food was actually QUITE good. The fries needed to be cooked hotter and a little bit longer as they were a little on the soft side. And as we ate, a patron with a broken arm came in and said in a rather snippy tone "make my fries crispy, ok?" the older gentleman at the counter said "ok" and the broken-arm patron said "for 28 bucks I should be able to order the fries crispy, right?" Ok I wait for my burger- doesn't take long, and I see her re-frying the old fries that were just sitting on the rack after she combined them with other fries from the other rack of the deep frier. I know, I was confused as well. Ok, lets garnish this thing. Tomato looks weird, lettuce is old, chopped onion only?? Pickles look dead- so I just walk out. Fries so greasy! You can squeeze . . . actually, just touch the oil out of them. I didn't not eat a single one. Burger was too pink in some areas- didn't finish it. Trashy place, trashy service, trashy locals. Ok, not all, not all. Should have gone to the Boathouse instead, or even the Blue Water Bistro. Lesson learned. Very friendly service people, quick, we didn't order the hot dogs (they did look amazing and could tell the patrons loved them) just got grilled cheese sandwiches, fries and chocolate shakes for my daughter and niece. They loved the fries and shakes, not so much the grilled cheese though. I was surprised that the bread was toasted in a toaster then they put the cheese on it and nuked it in the micro. My husband thought the girls were just being picky so he tried it and said it wasn't good either. Very disappointing, it's hard to mess up a hot dog and fries but the Dog House succeeds in that. The fires they serve are greasy, they don't heat there oil enough to get them crispy and they also don't cook them long enough. They come out pale and limp. My wife had a sausage with kraut and they smothered the untoasted bun with the kraut before adding the sausage. The result was a soggy dog that fell apart before we got it to the table. I had a garlic sausage that was barely heated up which meant the casing held together while my teeth pulled the meat out of it. It was kind of like eating an Otter Pop. The bun on my dog got soggy too. The place is a mess. For $12 a hot dog, I expect much better. Don't bother to stop. read more

Stopped by today on our way home from the beach. Pretty busy, so I had a decent amount of time to watch the people cooking. One Woman who was cooking all the food was touching her hair, then moved onto eating crackers, next off to the freezer to grab chicken strips with her bare hands...but it gets better! Next she throws down some raw hamburger meat on a prep table (where she's been preparing all sorts of other food), moves onto forming a hamburger patty and throws it on the grill. She proceeds to wipe the area where the raw meat was with a towel and then continued onto making someone's hot dog...never stopping to wash her hands!!! Not to mention that the prep table she's using has been cross contaminated. Needless to say I ended up spending $10 on a bottle of water.
