First and foremost, I am incredibly disheartened that I am having to write this review and give this rating. My friends and I have been regulars at the Douglas since the summertime. We were thrilled to have such an easy going environment, with affordable food and drinks, that was close by, outdoors, and covid-19 compliant. Hell, we became friends from being regulars from our mutual love for the bar. The Douglas has been a meaningful staple in our friendship that we've looked forward to meeting at every Wednesday. We have happily given The Douglas a significant amount of our business. The owners, Dave and Johnny, made themselves accessible and were friendly and generally warm. Over the time we've spent there and the interactions we've kept with Dave and Johnny, we felt like valued customers! So, believe me when I say we were absolutely shocked at not one, but two instances, BACK TO BACK of BOTH Dave and Johnny showing utter disinterest and even engaging in completely inappropriate commentary in regard to myself and my other female friend. The first instance was on Halloween. I'd bummed a cigarette of another regular, and while smoking it, the owner Johnny came up and asked me to step farther from the bar with my cigarette. I of course complied because I respected The Douglas and Johnny. But then, Johnny turns to the gentleman I'm making polite conversation with and says "Sorry I didn't mean to cock block." ??? Completely and utterly unnecessary and inappropriate. As you can tell from this review, I am pretty outspoken, so I expressed to Johnny the comment was made in poor taste and that I deserved more respect than that and I asked him to apologize. He was clearly annoyed and frustrated when he responded, "Well you know what happens when you make me apologize at my own bar, I kick you out". Huh??????? !!!! After spending countless dollars and time there, and having a friendly relationship with Johnny, I was shocked he didn't have enough respect for me as not even just a woman, but a person and patron to simply apologize for being out of pocket. I would explain why that is so fucked up but you'd have to be two men running a boys club called The Douglas to "not understand". Instead of apologizing, Johnny later told me I looked pretty in the bar lighting. Thanks Johnny! That made me feel like a real person and totally not object. Until yesterday I was reluctantly willing to let this go for the sake of The Douglas being such a coveted spot for my friends and me. One of my friends (there are 4 of us, by the way. 2 females and 2 males) arrived at the bar waiting for our other female friend. He's a social guy; he approached the other regulars who were standing with Johnny and asked where she was or if she had arrived yet. A disgusting regular (his name is Daniel, he and 2 other equally embarrassing men also named Daniel frequent the Douglas together) responded, "she's on in 20 minutes." Johnny and The Daniels LAUGHED ??? When my friend stuck up for her and let them know that was absolutely not funny or cool, AGAIN - there was NO apology, no accountability, and this time, my friend's demand for those things was met with Dave yelling at my friend as if HIS ANGER AT THE DISRESPECT WAS MISPLACED?? and saying "He didn't want to know what happened, he didn't care, he's not going to kick them out, because he has a business to run". MIND YOU, one of the other Daniel's, let's call him Daniel 2, even joked about having his GUN on him and that still wasn't enough for Johnny or Dave to hold them accountable. What about our business? We bring good energy, tip well, and sure as hell never blatantly disrespect anyone... We are all still so shocked and so disappointed to have the confirmation that despite our consistent patronage, Dave and Johnny repeatedly decide we are not owed respect, and have made it clear (and explicitly said) they do not care. I want to recommend this place, but with good conscience cannot any longer. PS. Y'all might wanna rethink the falafel. yikes. read more

It's not too often you stumble upon the neighborhood bar that just feels inviting from the first step in the door. The mood is lively and friendly, the yummy comfort food menu is matched perfectly to the generous assortment of libations. There's no way you'll go in there without getting a warm welcome from Dave. He's the guy with the Swifty Lazar eyeglasses and 5000 white smile. Definitely going back. read more

I want to acknowledge this place that my friends and I stumbled upon after the Dodger game. The staff is extremely friendly and very welcoming. The music was great. They had a variety of IPA's. A few beers on tap and I was extremely happy to have some champagne. The only downfall was there was no juice to accompany my champagne. We ordered food just to give it a try. And I have to say it was amazing. Freshly cooked and taste to perfection. My friend is vegetarian and ordered a falafel burger. She was very happy out how amazing it taste. So if your in the area stop in and have a drink and try a burger. Next time we are in the neighborhood we are definitely stopping in. We stumbled upon The Douglas by accident and decided to give it a try. Both the falafel and burger get an A+ from us. My husband talked me into splitting the Bird Bites as an appetizer and I'm glad he did...soooo good! This place is my favorite neighborhood spot! the chicken sandwich is amazing! But so is everything else, curly fries are perfect and they always have a sweet treat, one time it was pecan pie which was AMAZING! They used to have a $3 beer but now they have a $4 beer which is still a great deal, especially for the area! The owners are so sweet and personable and always remember my name and that I like an extra hot sauce with whatever I get! NOT IMPRESSED! Burger was small enough for a snail to eat. Fries, portions were flea sized. More salt on both of these then the Pacific Ocean! When you walk in there, it is like going through a haunted maze. Weird creepy music playing while you walk down a hall to get to the bar where you will see a skeletal amount of people looking completely brain dead. Nobody is smiling. It's quiet like someone just died. The only one looking like he is enjoying the party is the bartender who is drinking on the job and has delayed reaction to the patrons.. with his glassy little eyes. The price of this unsavory experience is incredible. RIDICULOUSLY over priced for the quantity and quality of food you get. I WON'T BE GOING BACK, NOR WILL I EVER RECOMMEND THIS DRUNKEN SALT SHACK. The Douglas is a great local bar with really awesome owners. The whole staff is really cool and I've gotten to know them over the past couple of weeks and it's one of my favorite spots in the whole city. You'd think in Echo Park you might get pretentious hipster vibes at most places you go, but this one isn't the case. Great beer, solid prices, awesome bar menu with simplistic, relaxing atmosphere to have a fun kickback on a thirsty Thursday. Highly highly recommend. read more
