This place knows what to do with a pig! Pulled pork is smoky and tender and juicy, and the sauce selection has something for everyone. My ONLY wish - but it's a big one - is that they had a coleslaw option without pineapple in it! I get that that's their chef's famous innovation and many people love it but I really really love coleslaw ON my pulled pork sandwich and it just tastes wrong when I hit a bite with pineapple! Other than that everything is excellent. Great salads, outstanding smoked wings, and good sides for the meals. Barbecue was ok. Burgers were small and terrible. My son found a hair in his. Service was slow. We ordered food to go and they gave us no napkins (with bbq!) and no utensils. I frequent the Flying Pig and LOVE it!! Yesterday I called to place an order for pick up. I was ordering the BBQ chicken salad with crispy chicken. I was told that I could not get crispy chicken on a to go order, BUT if I was dining in, I could get what I wanted. ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!! Normally a good visit/takeout. This visit was a bit disappointing. Not much detail needed but food was pretty cold and more importantly one of the best parts of the Flying Pig are the Hush Puppies we'll check the pic out for yourself. My biggest problem with this isn't the fact that it happened but it was a to go order so the cook had to see the EXTREMELY BLACKENED CONDITION of his/her product when putting them in the container.....and yeah cold as well. I brought my daughter here for dinner today. We ordered our food and it comes out with a hair on the coleslaw container. I showed the waiter, Patrick S, who then took it in the back, shook the container and brought me the same container with the hair still on it. Apparently he thought I wouldn't figure it out. Not only that he ignored our table numerous times with empty drinks and no refills. I spoke with 2 of the staff regarding this as Mary the main manager had left for the day. I even showed the manager on duty the hair. I then get home and find out the waiter had his girlfriend send me a message on Facebook messenger that I stiffed his tip and then unsent the message. You can see the attached screenshot. I'm about to stop coming here if this is how your staff is going to abuse customers and harass them after stalking their Facebook profiles. Ok so I came here for RVA burger week, as a disclaimer. I used to come here a couple of years ago during the week for specials they offered, because their barbecue is better than most around. They have an extensive menu regarding appetizers and main courses. There are some unique toppings for their burgers on the menu also. See attached menu pictures. OK BACK TO RVA BURGER REVIEW They offer a mac & cheese burger for the RVA burger week, fries to pay extra for on the side. The burger itself was quite small, however they offered it pink or non-pink in how you like it cooked. Mine was cooked correctly, The interesting part was the burger itself was small but the fried mac & cheese was twice the size of the burger itself. It seemed to be deep fried rotini pasta mac & cheese. It was not bad and very tasty. OK now that part is done, to backtrack just a moment we had the Buffalo chicken dip as an appetizer which was delicious, even the kids liked it. This was our first time eating here. The food was delicious and plentiful. My husband had the brisket sandwich and fries and they were the best fries I've ever had. Brisket wonderful. My daughter had another type BBQ sandwich and wings and she loved them. I had the BLT Hamburger with a side order of their home made Mac and Cheese. Burger cooked just to my liking and M&C was so creamy. It was different tasting than the normal cheese kind. It has a white creaminess to it. They give you a basket or corn muffins when you sit down and they were warm and sweet tasting. I forgot our waitress's name.... I'm terrible about that, but she was excellent. I used Yelp and followed up on the recommendations. We were so happy with the food and service even though they were out of the way. The hush puppies were yummy. I ordered burnt ends and baked beans. I thought this would be great. Ordered online. Had a 75 minute wait. When we got there, not too many people seated: they were getting their food in 10 minutes. Ours wasn't ready. In fact, I think they hadn't even started it. Took another 15 minutes. The food was ok. Not worth the price and the wait, though. (Pulled pork and pulled chicken). I was thoroughly impressed with this place. First off, location. Thank you for making a great place that us suburbanites can enjoy (and brag about) without crossing the river or schlepping to Midlothian TNPK. Service was perfect. The waiter (Chris) was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the food. I think he was just as excited about the offerings as the owners must be. He made some great recommendations and helped us big time with navigating all of the tastiness on the menu. I have to eat gluten-free, which can be super annoying, but Chris made it a real breeze. He was very patient and helpful. I'm not sure what's with the other reviewers and their complaints about service, but I'll just be sure to request Chris because he was wonderful, not to mention funny. I ordered the delectable fiery BBQ wings. They were absolutely amazing! I am a cook, and I have to say that those wings were mouthwatering--smoky, juicy, citrusy, spicy, and bursting with flavor! The flavor balance was impeccable, and the fact that they were both smoked and fried was the icing on the unbelievably tasty cake. I still crave those wings! I cannot eat it, but the cornbread that they serve all guests looked wonderful--light, fluffy, smooth, and golden. I didn't have to eat it to see that it was nothing like the box. I don't know if they changed the recipe since last year or not. My husband ordered the BBQ sampler. The standout for me, not because it was my favorite item on the plate, but because it is rarely done properly was the pulled chicken. The pulled chicken was so juicy! You rarely see juicy pulled chicken, even in the best restaurants. The BBQ was smoky and delicious, as were all of the other meats. Neither my husband nor I was impressed with the potato salad because we do not care for strong blue cheese. If you like blue then you'll love it. It had everything else that makes a great potato salad going for it, plus bacon. I also ordered the chili cheese fries as my "entree," since I had already eaten, but my husbands burger craving led us to dine out. The fries were perfectly crispy, and the chili was shredded-beef-based more like a Texas red than the ground beef of the Cincinnati chili; but it was more of a fusion of the two because it did have beans. I loved that they were white beans, not red. I very much prefer the taste and texture. As far as the basic stuff that most people start their reviews with (I start with food because that's the most important part to me), the atmosphere is casual, much like a sports bar but a bit nicer, prices are a bit on the higher end for casual dining, but the food is amazing! Ahhh, the sweet awesomeness of a non-chain, super-delicious, and diverse menu that is close to home; that is precisely what The Flyin' Pig offers in spades. The quality of their fare stretches from appetizers (some of the best smoked chicken wings that I have ever had) to dessert (the Cinnamon Bun Bread Pudding is slap-yo-mama good), and the service is always friendly and prompt. And did I mention that it is a non-chain and locally owned? Winning. While the majority of the menu is anchored in barbecue, they also have some tasty alternative options like mexican burritos and fish tacos, as well as what I will call "barbecue PLUS", where they infuse barbecue to other items like baked potatoes and burgers. Everything that I have tried has been at least good, with some items really exceptional. In the exceptional category, the pulled chicken here is some of the best that I have had anywhere; super juicy and tons of authentic smoky flavor (no Liquid Smoke here, folks). The homemade jalapeno poppers are incredible, and likely NOTHING like you have ever had before. They hollow out 1/2 of an entire jalapeno, fill it with a cheese blend, wrap the whole thing in bacon, and then they smoke it -- absolutely amazing! Here's where I am going to blow your mind: the best thing on the menu is the Jalapeno Barbecue Sandwich, where they top a heaping pile of the aforementioned pulled chicken (pulled pork is an option if you'd prefer) with two of these delicious poppers and house made peppercorn ranch. In terms of sides, I highly recommend the Mac & Cheese; super creamy and not orange -- legit cheese and cream with some cracked pepper. Super tasty! I also love the little cornbread muffins that they bring to the table, and recommend that you ask for their house-made honey butter to go with them. So good! Many of their meats do not come pre-sauced, so the 6-flavor sauce caddy is an awesome accompaniment to any meal. Personally, I love the Southern Cane and Alabama White -- both good on just about anything. PS: Not only to the wife and I love this place, my 5 year old daughter repeatedly asks to go here by name. The kids menu is a little pricey compared to other restaurants, but this is a textbook example of the mantra "You get what you pay for." read more

The Flyin' Pig serves up exceptional BBQ and Mac&Cheese, everything else is window dressing. After two nights of visits here, I can say that you are also going to get a good drink. Wings that are ordered with blue cheese comes with ranch dressing and blue cheese crumbles are added on top. The wings are substantial. The variety of sauces are an interesting addition - to each their own. The back of the house was a revolving door for non-workers and the surgical-gloved plate delivery from the poor lad just was washing dishes was... unfortunate. Melamine plates are chipped and aged and do not fit in with the nicer decor. Coleslaw has diced pineapple - not elevated, just bizarre. Service from Mario was acceptable. Salad came out with the entree. Overall, this is a relatively good joint that seems to have found strength in BBQ, drinks, and a side or two. The service was slow. My daughter never got the Diet Coke we asked for, but we were charged for it. The mixed drinks were watered down. My bbq salad had a big crawling through it when I got it. Let me start by saying that we had the best server ever. Her name was Kinlee and she was just so darned cute! She had the most bubbly personality. She recommended menu choices for us and we took her advice. Everything was really good. From the hush puppies to the stuffed baked potatoes, the wings and the burgers. I live in NJ, but if I ever come back to Richmond/Midlothian to visit, I will definitely come back here to eat. read more

This was our first visit and We will be back. The menu is full of old favorites and favorites with a new twist. Like the philly cheese steak egg rolls served with homemade queso. Amazing goodness comfort food. I also got a half salad - pecan goat cheese with pulled chicken. Delicious flavors in every bite. The balsamic dressing worked well with the smoked chicken flavor. Food was good but the service was excellent. Our server Kristen was exceptional and when we asked her to hold off our main course order, she actually said,"I am here to serve you". I don't remember the last time that I heard that. We were a party of 6 and got multiple things, all of which were tasty. We got 2 kinds of wings, Sriracha bbq were our favorite. My son got the ribs and they were "da bomb ". The blue cheese and bacon potato salad was delicious but I could not taste the bacon. All and all, a solid four star place. And as a side note, they had great beer selection. We enjoyed several IPAs and pale ales. The ambiance was ok. Nothing to write home about. read more

What a great hidden restaurant that's across the river. They had gingerbread stout on tap! They also had booths which is my favorite comfortable seating that you don't always find in good restaurants Iike this anymore but they managed to incorporate them without it looking tacky. I ordered the baja grilled fish tacos which were good. The fish was perfectly grilled with a citrus flavor. I did not like the overload of tomatoes and typical Mexican cheese they added. Although a little of those ingredients would have been fine, the amount they put on the tacos took away from the awesome grilled fish. My friend had a wonderful burger that included sliced fried pickles that she really enjoyed. Overall I will definitely come back to this restaurant if I'm on this side of town. The BBQ and sides here are really good. I enjoyed the pulled pork with the South Cacalacky sauce. The only problem is that this place is not doing a good job recovering from Covid recently. They don't seem to be able to hire and keep anyone. Almost half of the restaurant is empty all the time with people lined out the door. Seems to only be focusing on takeout business. While many in area are having a hard time because they are short staffed, this place seems to suffer more than others. Hit or miss if you will find a seat, but I hope they recover so I can go back. read more
