I grew up going to the Hat. When I feel like gaining 10 pounds in a day I go get a double chili cheeseburger and wet fries with the gravy on the side. This is by far the best food that you will ever eat. Maybe not the healthiest but definitely on of the best tasting. If you have never been to the Hat give it a try. Once again, after a tough search for a parking spot, and negotiating passage through a fully filled dining room to line up to place an order, I enjoyed a wonderful Pastrami Dip Sandwich here on a soft mild mustarded roll. The very tasty pastrami was mixed with bits of fat, but they just provided a welcome moist glossy finish to the pink meat. And the pastrami was very generously heaped on, to the degree that it spilled over all edges of the roll. But not as much as a single large order of French Fries! Slightly hard on the outside and soft on the inside, this haul of cut potatoes fed my party of four and still resulted in half of the bag being left over, as was also true of an order of nicely battered crispy Onion Rings. Saturday afternoon, still pi$$ed off that the Dodgers lost game 6 the night before and needed to quell the unsatisfactory mood. I was craving a pastrami or a burger. Couldn't decide so I figured I would roll into The Hat and would decide by the time I got there. Well, no decision upon arrival. The place was packed at 11:30ish. See some Dodger fans while walking in and figure they too were in an unsatisfactory mood. Made eye contact and yep, mood verified: unsatisfactory! Good thing Ryu wasn't feasting here. The line inside to order was several humans deep. I figured I had time to decide. Every table was packed with people destroying pastrami. Service was so quick that my estimated time for decision making was not accurate. I decided on the pastrami burger! The order was ready in no time! Got my extra yellow mustard packets and a few yellow peppers and filled up a medium beverage to wash it down. The bag was heavy for a pastrami burger. Sat at a table that folks just left. Opened up the fine wrappings and BAM!!! No doubt about it, my mood was about to change. This thing was loaded with pastrami and everything else you would want in a burger. After a few tasty bites my mood shifted. I could sense myself becoming Hulk Hogan after almost being defeated and wagging my finger at my unsatisfactory mood. Even appetizers. If I order it, best believe it's for me, myself, and I. After a long day of work, travel, and some more work; I was ready for my first meal of the day. It was dinner time and had 50/50 Slater's in mind. Once I drove in the parking lot, I spotted The Hat so I made every effort to make sure I get a chance to try this before flying back home. I succeeded! On my last day of training, I opted to skip lunch because I had my heart set on this. Everyone in the class wondered if I will be able to finish it but little do they know about little ole Tram. The Pastrami Dip is a must. I did not order a drink because I have water in my backpack. I wanted to try their chili cheese fries so bad but I knew that would be such a bad idea. I would need to do 5hrs of cardio to offset all of that junk. After about 4 minutes, my # was called. The Hat Parking is ok, it's shared with other businesses, it's no to hard to find parking near by. Driveway to the area is low car friendly. There is outside seating, there is no tv inside, there is music playing at a low volume, interior is clean has a wooden brown theme about it and shows black and white pictures Drinks are free refill, the selection is the usual coke products, so coke, sprite, dr pepper, barks, fanta and some mexican drinks. The portion size is good for the price. The gravy fries can be shared with 2-3 people. It comes soaked with gravy and in a drink tray to hold all the fries. The pastrami dip is about 5-7 inches in length and the pile on the pastrami. The sandwich is very flavorful. The service was good and fast for how busy they were. I will say that I love "The Hat", but the one in Rancho I feel doesn't like nor respect African Americans. Every time I drive down from Victorville to Rancho I am up against some sort of attitude or disrespect from the staff. They are so rude and disrespectful. I also love the peppers but the bags that they provide for you to put the peppers in, the coating makes me sick every time. I ask for a cup to put the peppers in, and that triggered them. I understand saving money, but if the customer is telling you there is an issue, please listen. I had family from North Carolina in town yesterday (Saturday) and I asked them to meet me at the Hat to enjoy some good pastrami, we met at the hat, I was thinking things would be different, although I was expecting the best just maybe this time would be different. NOPE....before I could get out of the car to meet them, my family were complaining about the treatment received, I asked for a manager, Jessie came, he was worse than the staff- while stating that he was the manager. I was hit with a bucket while one of the staff were cleaning the soda area, she was pouring water in the drain, drop the bucket and him me with it. She didn't apologize or anything. I was more embarrassed with the hat more than anything, with the treatment that was shown to my family, being that I bragged so much about this spot. The sign said $8.19. Tax in my area is 7.5%. That should be $8.80. I was charged $10.97. That $2.17 extra. When I asked if the prices changed or why I was being charged an extra 2 buck he said "that's with tax". I explained the math to him he said well I don't know, rude. Come on, I know it's t just $2. However, if they are doing this 10,000 customer's a day. That adds up to $20,000 a day. The receipt didn't give me a breakdown either which leads me to believe they got crooked books. So I was leaving a job interview headed home about 100 miles south. It was lunch time so I had yelped local eateries to grab a bite on the way to the freeway. There seemed to be a lot of the regular places as I scrolled down from top to bottom. As I reached the end of the list, low and behold, THE HAT! I have been lucky enough to have experienced THE HAT years ago when my wife lived in Alhambra, however, it has been years since we've been back there. I quickly mapped it out and was in the parking lot in a flash. Once inside, I knew I was in for a treat. I could see and smell what I had longed for for years. I had texted a friend who lives in the OC area when I was in Anaheim weeks ago to see where there was anything close to resembling THE HAT was. Unfortunately due to time and family constraints, I was left with nothing but measly chili cheese fries. Just not the same. So I walked up to the counter and boldly ordered the pastrami burger and an order of chili cheese fries with tomatoes and pickles. Within minutes I had that golden heap of goodness in my hands and headed for the nearest open table. I couldn't decide which to devour first, but decided on the burger since the bun wouldn't be able to stay whole for much longer as the juice from the burger/ pastrami was already being soaked in. One bite after glorious bite, the burger was done. Mind you, I'm not very big in stature so the burger by itself is quite an accomplishment. However, I had this awesome display of fries in front of me that had to be attacked. I dug in with fork in hand and did a big hurt on the mountainous mass. In the end, I was done with little over a half being eaten.
