Amazing tastes and sushi. It's sort of a mix of Japanese, Hawaiian and French believe it or not. The sushi melted. Loved the scallops and the salmon. Very fresh. Reasonably priced. It's sort of a chill slow paced atmosphere. Service was a little slow which I could complain about a little. I guess don't come here if you're in a hurry or else order out. Otherwise just sit and relax and watch the seascapes on the tv screen, and order a drink or two because you're pretty much on Hawaiian time here and things move at a Hawaiian pace. They also really try to be honest about wait times for to go orders. If you do have a wait, it's well worth it so be patient (and kind). I am visiting from out of town and saw this place from highway 101. After a cold day of December diving at Woahink laje, I wanted good calories and fresh seafood. I had the garlic prawns. Fabulous! The Hukilau is one of those stellar gems you stumble upon and feel as if you've discovered a hidden, community secret--a seaside-community pub with extraordinary Hawaiian cuisine. It's user-friendly with happy cooks and waiters dressed in tropical shirts, listening to reggae or traditional Hawaiian tunes. I've eaten here several times over a week's time and I was thoroughly overwhelmed and impressed with each meal--the artistic care in presentation, every detail and ingredient, wrapped in delicate flavors that I have never experienced. I'm not particularly a food connoisseur, but when amazing food crosses my path, I take notice--it's memorable. The Hukilau is worthy as a destination. Ok... this place is off the charts amazing. We were looking for a sushi place for a party of 11 on a busy Saturday..they gladly accepted us with a short wait to prepare the tables so we could all sit together. They did warn us beforehand that they are short staffed and doing the best they can. We said no problem we understand, we were just glad they got us all in! First off...these guys work very hard and were non stop busy with patrons..it is not a very big place inside but they all work together amazingly and are completely in control despite the fast paced craziness they work in. .. they got some spectacular employees working there... I know I couldn't handle it.. I was worn out just watching them from my cozy seat. But it was fascinating to watch .. it was like an orchestra.. everyone had there own melody but all together it was a masterpiece. Now the food... holy crap...out of this world delicious. Well worth any wait you have...please please ... do not be walk away cause of a crowd or a wait.. which is what my husband and I personally do on a regular basis to restaurants.. and I know we miss out on a lot of amazing food..but since we had friends with us we decided to wait ..there is a variety to choose from.. it's a good thing when everything sounds amazing and it's hard to choose..just means we must come back to try something else ..and for heavens sake we will...despite it being 3 hrs and 56 minutes from our house. The drinks were beautiful... I actually had the cider on tap. Amazing.. they even brought us a complimentary appetizer for being patient (not on menu) that was so Stinkin good I would come back just for that alone.. the yellowtail nigiri was one of the best I've ever had.. the angry dragon roll was to die for. The pineapple teriyaki chicken with Hawaiian Mac salad plate was licked clean. It was such a blur for me cause I was in a yummy food coma that I can't even remember what everyone else got and I completely failed to take any pictures of food which is not like me at all!!!. But I'm pretty sure everyone was very pleased and went away completely full and satisfied. I am one of the few humans on this earth that doesn't really love or even like Hawaii.. I know I'm odd.. but I always said I would go back to Hawaii for the food only. It was the most delicious and fresh food I ever had when I went to Maui one time... this place in Florence Oregon ..2,600 miles away from Maui ...captured the essence and tastes of Maui single-handedly ...and now.. rather then pay a fortune to get myself to Maui for a re- creation of that amazing food I had there .. all I have to do is drive 239 miles south to Florence Oregon and I will be placed back in that one trip I took to Hawaii...and surrounded by some of the best food I've ever had. Hubby and I just visited Christian and Natasha's new digs since they've moved on from the Hawaiian Food Truck. Oh my, they did not disappoint! We both had the panko breaded prawns and chips. Huge prawns perfectly tender inside with a light crisp outside. The fries were awesome, but the mac salad and pickled veggies were to die for! You can see and taste the love they put into their food. Legit as soon as we walked in, it was a busy for sure but we were willing to sit to take our food to go. Tall guy with glasses said he couldn't do takeout, once again we were willing to sit. Dude just walks away so we asked if we could sit at the bar and order and we would dine in. Never got an answer but we were helped by a nice server. And then the rude server comes back and asks if we can move down (the area he was speaking of was still dirty). I then tell my boyfriend I'm not eating here if this is the guy I'm gonna have to talk to. So I got up and left and my boyfriend followed suit. Never gonna go here again and wish I at least got to taste the food that smelled delicious. Service is terrible. I had the cheese burger and my wife had the curry. Gooey delicious cheese on my burger. I love a good burger and this place delivered. It had a good amount of greens to counter balance the succulent flavor of the meat and cheese. Will definitely stop by this place when I roll through Florence. Updated review: We went to the Hukilau a few days ago after not having been for a while. I think the last review might have been while they were still opertaing out of a food truck. I love most of the food I've tried there, but do have one complaint about it -- true to the way things work in Hawai'i, with the entrees they pile on two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Anyone who's trying to cut down on carbs misses half the meal, and if you want something less packed with carbs, you have to pay three bucks extra for roasted vegetables. Really? Folks, Hawai'i has some of the worst statistics for diabetes in the nation, and that idiotic diet is why. (Lived on the Big Island for three years!) Hukilau is supposed to be Pacific Fusion as well as Hawaiian food, so how about updating your menu to accommodate the reality that people are trying to watch their carbs these days? I had the Cubano sandwich, which was delicious if perhaps over the top as far as packing on the meat. It was two meals' worth for me. I really wanted an entree, but didn't want the rice and mac, and didn't want to pay extra for veggies. The sushi is always good there. Would like to see small-size combos that don't cost a fortune. Finally, I will no longer buy mixed drinks at The Hukilau or any other restaurant that charges upwards of $10 or more for them. I guess tourists have lots of money to blow, but I'm tired of wasting money on drinks that cost almost as much as the food. The food is perishable, requires lots of time and multiple people to prep it and serve it, and often consists of locally-grown produce or meats that cost the restaurant extra. Mixed drinks are nonperishable, stored mostly in bottles, and are thrown together by one person in a minute or so. Since I didn't get one on the last visit, I don't know if Hukilau is still automatically putting plastic straws in their drinks, but I hope not. I don't mean to sound like I don't love this restaurant, but would love to see a little bit more health-friendly menu and maybe some reasonably priced mixed drinks. read more
