Since we couldn't dine in, we took our sushi to near by scenic spot to eat overlooking the ocean. Beside the strong wind, it was actually really nice to eat al fresco with a scenic view! We ordered the "angry dragon roll" and "scallop roll". When I opened the scallop roll, the first thought I had was "OMG that's a lot of sauce"! Just when I finally calmed down from the first box (roll), I was Immediately shocked by the angry dragon. "It looked more like a murdered dragon" I said to my boyfriend! Ok folks, let me explain... when I order sushi, I expect some sauce. In this case, there was A LOT OF SAUCE!! The scallop roll was covered by two different sauces (mayo and soy). While the angry dragon roll sat on a huge splash of Sriracha; the container lid was dripping with MORE Sriracha! It's the first time i encountered this, and the best way i can explain is that the roll was splatter painted with sriracha! When we finally dug into the rolls, we were happy to find (1)the rolls are huge, and (2) they packed in a lot of fresh seafood in each roll! So we loved the rolls while trying to scrape off as much sauce as we could! So yes, please visit the store if you are in the area and appreciate giant/fresh sushi. They said stop at The Hukilau on your honeymoon. So we did. After we had the food we knew we had to come back before we left Florence. The service was so friendly and personal, the atmosphere was so Hawaii and the experience was just perfect! We tried the Hawaiian Catch Plate, Pele's Volcano Chicken, Spicy Crab Roll, Pickled Veggies, Katsu Chicken Fingers, some daily specials, and of course Mai Tai. The food was super fresh and the portions were huge! My favorite is the combination of unique flavors especially in the Hawaiian Catch and pickled veggies. They took me back to Maui! Took about ten to fifteen minutes to get our food, no worries as the kids lace as hopoin. I got the Loco Moco, loved it. Would order again. Family got the pulled pork and Korean ribs. This is a family friendly restaurant that has a wide variety of dishes and sushi on their menu. Food came out fresh and hot! Visiting Florence for a wedding and decided to drop into this little gem. Very nice staff and chill atmosphere. They have an interesting menu from burgers to sushi! my husband got the "Really Good Burger" and I chose a sushi roll. As advertised, the burger was really good and the fries were seasoned and crispy. I watched my roll being made by hand, and it was also very tasty. When we arrived, no one greeted us, told us where to sit, or really acknowledge us at all, save for a few side eyed looks from bar and sushi staff. We were eventually told by a server (who ended up being our server) to "Find a spot." That's it. No "welcome in" "hello" or even "hey idiots". We were hungry so we sat at a table with two seats so we didn't take up space for any larger parties. We were given menus after some time that felt like several minutes. While we were browsing the menus, I looked around and noticed I was the only patron of color in the restaurant. Odd but not impossible. After about five minutes a group of three people (all Caucasian) was lead to a four top next to our table by a server, they received menus and water immediately. We still hadn't received water or been asked if we wanted anything to drink. A group of two (both Caucasian) were lead to a four top on the other side of us by the same server who told us to "Find a spot." They were also given water and menus immediately. We still have yet to receive water or be asked if we wanted something to drink. After a few minutes, the servers took the orders of both groups that arrived after us. To recap: at this point, the people who arrived and were seated after us at seats next to ours, already had waters, were being brought drinks from the bar, and ordered food before we were served waters. We were finally brought waters, we considered finding a different spot for food but we were hungry and in a city we did not know, so we opted to stay and order food. The three top started to receive their order, which came at different times. And THEN our food came out, we both ordered the mac and cheese which was really tasty! The flavor profile was really good, and I felt like it was staying true to Hawaiian flavors. All in all, I don't know if it was just an off day or not. I hope it was just a coincidence, and not a race thing, but as a person of color, I did not feel welcome and I did not feel safe at the restaurant. If we were to stop there in the future, I think we'll just order our food to go and eat it elsewhere. read more

First time stopping at The Hukilau. What a fun little gem! Sushi bar, bar, a few outdoor tables right on Hwy 126, near the bridge at the South of town. The ceiling has din Hawaiian decor, surfboards and Hawaiian shirts. We tried the 6 Gun Gary, a baked sushi roll with shrimp. It was delicious! My husband has the Cacio E Pepe seafood pasta, and a cup of the chowder, which is a mix of Manhatten and New England Clam Chowder. That was a fun change, tasting a bit Italian to me with a little fennel perhaps. I look forward to trying more of the sushi. There were plenty of people there on Thursday at 4pm, so go during off hours if you can. Food was on Hawaiian time, a bit slow, but the service was great. read more

This is an updated review. Post Covid we went back to Hukilau. I was disappointed with my Poke Bowl. The rice was smothered with too much mayonnaise. However, my partner had the BBQ Pork Sandwich and she was very happy with it. She ate all of it except for the fries. Too much food. But they give you what you pay for. When we walked in we were told that they are short staffed and that it would be awhile to be served. They let you know that if you are willing to wait for service, they will be happy to serve you. Very courteous. We literally waited 10 minutes to get a menu, which was fine, we were warned. Ordered our drinks and that took another 15 minutes to come. Our meal took 40 minutes. We were okay with this, as we were warned. So if you go here, be prepared to wait. You can see that the staff is super exhausted. This place is so busy, line out the door. All the tables inside and outside were filled. The staff tries very hard to service their customers. Judging by the way the food comes out, the kitchen is probably shorthanded too. The reason for the 3 star review, downgraded from my previous 4 star, is because of the amount of mayo on the rice. But other than that, this place still serves good food. read more

This was AWFUL. We waited almost two hours for our food to be served. They said they were running a little behind. That did not adequately communicate a two hour wait for food (food that had clearly been prepared hours before and was sitting in warming trays). Somehow they did manage to serve high margin drinks from the bar with no problem. Maybe they should have moved someone from the well staffed bar to the kitchen where, appropriately, no one was home. We would have left but they kept on lying to us about the status of our order ("it's coming right out"). BTW, the food was incredibly mediocre (the pulled pork had almost no taste unless smothered in sauce). Their excuse was that all the high school kids they hired disappeared to the beach. Here's a suggestion: hire adults. And with all their signs about the customers needing to be nice, our server was downright nasty. The first time my boyfriend and I came here it was extremely crowded and we received terrible service. Everything we tried to order the waiter would come back after 15 minutes and tell us that it wasn't available anymore. This happened 3 times. My boyfriend and I were reluctant to go back so it took several months, but the second time we came here we were able to order food but the service was still slacking from the waiters. The bartender was great though and made amazing drinks. We were sitting at the bar so the bartender would get our drinks but for others at tables I would see drinks just sitting at the bar for 15 minutes before getting served. The food was great but not great enough for me to endure crappy service again. So not looking likely that I'll go back.
