I've been working a few blocks from the Lunch Box for a few years now and have avoided it thus far (who knows why). Maybe I'm so anti I didn't want to have lunch at a place made for lunch. I'm sure I would have eaten there earlier if it had a bit of a less lunchy name, but I digress. I'm pleased to report that I'm a new fan of the Lunch Box! I tried the roasted turkey on wheat with everything (lettuce/tomatoes/onions/mustard) + the olive garlic tapenade. I thought there was a possibility the flavors in the sandwich might be too much, but it ended up being fine. The bread was warm and toasty and the turkey brought me back to thanksgiving with each delicious bite. The other notable things I liked about The Lunch Box were the prices ($5.75 for ALL sandwiches), variety/selection of sandwiches, and service was organized and good. It's also nice that the sandwiches automatically are served hot unless you request otherwise. They also have a frequent eater program where if you eat a certain amount of sandwiches there you get one free. On my next trip I will have to come back and try the BBQ brisket, as that sandwich seems to be getting some great reviews. read more

I'm a stickler on customer service, everyone who I came in contact with was very helpful and pleasant. They even allowed my dad to sample the soup since he was on the fence. At lunch, the lines can get long but just phone in your order ahead of time to pick up. For $8.99, I chose to get the bbq brisket hot plate that comes with caesar or garden salad, mashed potatoes and a piece of bread on the side. I was pleasantly surprised by the bbq brisket. I usually don't like any sauce on my brisket but this sauce had a nice flavor to it and didn't overpower the brisket. The meat itself was nice and tender. The mashed potatoes were pretty creamy and was a nice carb addition to the protein. The salad was decent and I liked that they didn't overdress the salad with dressing. All in all, a great lunch spot for a sando, salad or a meal. read more

Eaten here twice now and had sadly disappointing experiences both times. The first time was a couple weeks after Covid SIP started, I ordered two sandwiches one being a turkey and the other an italian combo type, and when I went to pay I realized both sandwiches were hot. I asked if I was supposed to specifically say I wanted them cold when I ordered and was told I should have been asked but the person taking my order was "the new guy" and had forgotten to ask me. To be fair the guy who rang me up asked if it was ok and I think had I pushed it they would have remade the sandwiches for me but I didn't really want to wait around again for new sandwiches so we just took them and left. I definitely regret it as when you are in the mood for a regular cold cut sandwich, having a hot Italian trio is a bummer. You are also charged more for the hot sandwich. I decided to give them another try a couple of weeks ago and made sure I was super specific with my order. Turkey, cheddar, sourdough roll, mayo, mustard, lettuce, pickles, that's it...cold sandwich. I watch as it's all marked on the order sheet and then go outside to wait. We pay for the sandwiches, walk home, and I unwrap my sandwich and take a bite and it tastes off from what I'm expecting. I open the sandwich up and realize there's balsamic all over the top of the roll. I really want to like this place as I have been looking for years for a new sandwich go to since Genova closed, but I don't know that this is it if I'm going to have to unwrap my food to make sure the order hasn't been messed up each time now. read more

Guy behind the counter somehow saw me, asked if I was ready to order - Asian chicken salad wrap - They'll call your name and take your money when it's done. I probably waited 5 minutes despite their being at least 12 people waiting at noon. Wrap was under 8 bucks, it wasn't full of salt or overloaded with dressing. COVID-19: easy to call ahead, nice service. The pastrami sandwiches here are very good, all of the sanwhiches have a lot of meat and are a great value for the area. I tried the bbq chicken meat was dry today but the ranch dressing is fresh and adds moisture back. read more

Great sandwich for a pretty good price. Sandwiches include tax which is nice. Tried the roast turkey and the eggplant sandwiches. Roast turkey was good (average, felt like I could make it myself) but loved the eggplant! Full of flavor, get it with the mozzarella and marinara sauce! Also, the olive and garlic tapenade is really good and super garlicy. Service was nice and helped me through it (menu can be a lot to take in). During the work lunch hour, it took me ~15-20 minutes to get in and out of the place. You order at the counter, then go up to the counter again to pay when your item is ready. Be ready to pick what kind of bread, cheese, and tapenade you want to keep the lines moving. I ordered a Hot Pastrami sandwich, which came out to $8.97 including tax. The Lunch Box has a stamp card, which is great for regulars, so be sure to ask for one if you don't have one already! I must say, it's a little late review. Wonder how I skipped this one. But better late than never. We were in Oakland for some errands; thought would grab our lunch before taking the BART. Yelp showed us so many places, but The Lunch Box was the nearest one with the best reviews. Smaller place than we expected. There were a couple of customers in front of us; we waited until they have finished. Turkey breast, Avocado cheese and The veggie. We had to wait for 10-15 mins for them to get us the food. The staffs were friendly. Were keen to explain what comes with it and what are our options. So it was quite easy to pick the right options of the sandwich. The sandwiches were ordered with tapenade, carrots and jalapenos. All I wanted was to make it a little spicier, but they turned out really well. Avocado cheese was a total surprise package - damn it was SO good. I was craving for more after finishing a medium sized sandwich. The veggies was terrific too. The extra spiciness through the jalapenos really worked. I hardly see carrots being using in sandwiches, but those carrots really added another flavor to it; I thought it had it's own spiciness as well. The Turkey breast was kind of Ok, definitely not bad, but was not the best one among the order, that's all. Loved the food. And of course, HEAVY lunch! Their menu looked really interesting. Soups, Wraps, hot plate options and so many salad options. I am particularly interested in the wraps and hot plates. I think the plates come with salad, mashed potato and the gravy. Located on Franklin street near 19th street Bart Station is "The Lunch Box". This place gets very very busy during lunch but the staff does a pretty good job of getting people in and out . I ended up getting based on reviews the BBQ Brisket and it was quite good especially since it's under $10 which is good since I do get a lot of my meals in SF. This place would be extremely popular if they expanded to SF which given their rating and popularity I wouldn't be surprised if they are considering expansion possibilities. A small detail that I noticed was how they had their food handling certifications, laminated and displayed in a somewhat orderly fashion on a side wall. This attention to detail and the way they get people in and out of the small cramped venue was impressive. If I was in the area I would probably grab food from here often which gives it a 4 star rating but the taste wasn't quite enough to give it a 5 star from me. read more

My only regret with respect to the Lunch Box is that I didn't start patronizing the place earlier... it had been recommended by a number of coworkers, but my stubborn nature prevailed... until a little over a week ago when I forgot to bring my lunch from home. Yes, the food is outstanding - I've had a pastrami sandwich twice, once with a dutch crunch roll, the other with the more standard sour white roll, washing it down both times with Rocket Piss Bitterscotch Butterscotch. Both times it satisfied me for the rest of the day. But I feel that focusing on the food somehow misses the point - entering the Lunch Box is an experience - the banter between the fellow who takes your order and the lady who delivers it is - well, you'll just have to find out for yourself. (Still haven't figured out whether those two are married or not). And the banter between staff and the customers - it's like a party amongst all your friends - no holds barred when it comes to the subject matter, and from all reports never grows stale. So, if you think all sandwich experiences roll into one, I dare you to try this place - your mind will be blown. read more

FANTASTIC PLACE! I got a turkey breast on a dutch crunch with the sweet pepper tapenade. SO delicious! The man (I think was the owner) was very friendly and helpful. Fast service. Sandwich was toasted (which he asked me if I wanted it toasted) and had the perfect amount of condiments. I was overly impressed with the diet soda selection. I got a A&W Cream Soda. I tried Lunchbox in DT Oakland a few weeks ago based on Yelp ratings. I don't live in Oakland and just happened to be there that day for work. I ordered the Italian trio. The sandwich was quite good. Dutch crunch was fresh and the sandwich was moist and better than expected. I am rating them four stars only because I have really high standards when it comes to sandwiches. That said, I would certainly patronize Lunchbox in the future when in the area. I was catering a sorority event for 100+ people and Anne Marie worked with me over the phone to figure out better pricing options, the right ratio of kinds of sandwiches, and even delivered to our spot on the beach to make things easy for us.
