I stopped by for lunch and was greeted with a vigorous welcome amidst the bustling lunch frenzy. That put a pleasant smile on my face especially since it was my 1st time here. Chips - they had a wall to wall selection that blended well next to the beverage display. Grab as you go and pay when your deliciousness has been served. I'm bad with names but I'm sure it was the Father & Dad working the scene who made me feel so welcome and was delighted to take my order. After a few short minutes Wala- a warm pastrami sandwich whose bread was perfectly chrisp plus had all the right toppings. I have to admit the first time I walked past this place I honestly thought it sold office supplies. And the second time. And third.. Finally one warm summer day I was crossing over Franklin on 17th and smelled this wonderful aroma. After a few minutes of both Madison and I sniffing door ways (actually after the first door way I sniffed and she looked at me like she might want to consider a new mommy!) I discovered that wonderful fragrance was indeed coming from The Lunch Box. I'm not a big fan of fast food on a regular basis but I do understand the need for places that serve it. The Lunch Box is a wonderful choice for those people who have limited time to "find and dine" on their lunch break. It is also great if you're looking for cheap and tasty, healthy and cheap, healthy and quick, or any combo of the above. They have all your usual deli selections, with soft, fresh bread, and heaping piles of meat cut fresh in house. They also have good warm selections like their BBQ Beef brisquit- which I recommend on Dutch Crunch! Two things I suggest.. One check out the menu on line before your first visit.There are a lot of considerations and the staff is excellent at moving each guest thru very quickly and you'll feel a bit foolish going "Uhmm..." while holding up the line! If I need a sandwich fix, the Lunch Box is the place for me. It reminds me of my most favorite sandwich place - Potbelly's (in Midwest and back east). The LB owners (who also own IB Hoagies) are super friendly and funny, as they often joke around with the clients. They're known for their wide variety of sandwiches, but menu also includes soups, salads, wraps, hot plates (meatloaf, lasagna, baked mac and cheese), and even breakfast options. I usually get a combo of a sandwich (chicken or turkey are my favs) and soup (minestrone or chicken noodle) OR sandwich and salad. What I love about the LB is that they offer hot sandwiches (bbq brisket, chicken, italian sausage, etc.,) AND they toast their bread (wide variety but sourdough or french are my favs). I dig the warm and toasty!@! The meats are typically very tender and flavorful, and the lettuce and tomatoes are fresh. Their homemade olive medley is the BEST!! It is best to know exactly what you want to order, and if you need extra time, step to the side. They try to make it easy to order, by ordering to your left and paying to your right. They have frequent sandwich cards, which also apply to IB Hoagies, and with every 10, you get one free. Most people order for takeout since the dining area isn't big at all, with about 8 stools to sit on. Service is super quick and very efficient. It gets really crowded during the lunch rush, so best to either call the order in advance OR take an early or late lunch. Prices are very reasonable as my lunch combo costs about $7. Before I start off - the hours are wrong. Their very door says they open at 10am. Be advised. Only my first time here but I'm already very pleased with the food. I'll start off with the location. It's aptly named, as the actual space resembles something of a box. Certainly a little tiny, but there is seating room against the wall in singles style counter seating. Perhaps about 5-10 spots? It strikes me as more of a "shop" than a restaurant, so be warned if you're going with a lot of people. I came here about 5 minutes after they opened. No wait for a line. I get in and order a Reuben with everything, followed by a meatball sandwich with everything, pepper jack, and the jalapeño and carrot tapenade, and finally a medium chicken dumpling soup. I also threw in a grape sunkist soda for good measure. My order came to a total of 19 dollars, which is expected for that amount of food. In fact, it's probably a little on the cheap side! Given the volume, I was only able to eat the soup and half of the meatball sandwich. While the meatball was flavorful with a myriad of tastes (I would definitely come here to buy it again), what really grabbed my attention was the soup. It was creamy, and the veggies were somehow still fresh and crispy despite being part of the soup's delicious broth. The chicken was great and the pasta was soft and melted in your mouth. Very rich flavor. I plan on trying all the soups out after this. The Reuben will have to wait, but I have high hopes. read more

I just went here to grab some lunch to go while I was working from my client out in Oakland. I got there a little before noon and there was already a line of people waiting to order and a line of people waiting for their orders but it wasn't too bad. The service was fantastic and everyone was very kind. I ordered the roasted eggplant sandwich with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. I also added the olive tapenade to it because it just sounded so fantastic! The eggplant was fresh and flavorful and WASN'T FRIED! It was absolutely fantastic. I ate the sandwich on a dutch crunch. Compare this to like a Jersey Mike's where, not only do I pay more, but I leave feeling unsatisfied. I got the Italian Trio from here on their awesome dutch crunch bread. It was perfectly buiilt, and what really did it was the great bread that was perfectly toasted and wrapped in a foil wrap. Service is to the point, but they have to be as it gets pretty crowded during lunch. Expect the order to go, as there are only a couple of bar seats to eat at. I love the Lunchbox. They are really nice and efficient there, you never have to wait long not matter how busy it gets, but more importantly they offer fresh sandwiches and a nice array of condiments and sides. I like Big Apple because it's cheaper and closer to my work, but LunchBox's bread and meats are higher quality for sure. Their soups can be fairly salty, I think they are more just to have a warm side than to actually specialize in soup, but I personally like them for a warm side to my sandwich. they also have plates, my coworker has ordered the mac and cheese plate with salad and it was a TON of food. The veggies and rolls are always super fresh, bread smells great. I've tried the brisket, meatball, ham and eggplant sandwiches. So far my favorites are brisket on seeded with everything and jalapeno carrot tapinade, and eggplant with mozarella on french roll with garlic tapinade and a side of chicken dumpling or vegetable soup. It's a really great place to pick up a fresh bite and the prices are reasonable, but you might find yourself adding on their specialty sodas and chips and Haribo candies as you wait!! They also give out frequent buyer cards, so if you go there for lunch alot you'll get a sandwich back :) All in all one of my favorite lunch spots in downtown/uptown oakland. read more

I was so desperately seeking lunch options this afternoon, not considering any of my usuals, needing a change. I pass this establishment many times as my dentist is on the same block. Finally after Yelping lunch today, this is one that popped up on the first page. I head over, and parked right in front, their white zone for pick ups, such a great beginning. I walk in and immediately am greeted. I asked if they had spaghetti and meatballs, he offered garden or ceasar, I opted for ceasar. The front box is flipped open to see if you are satisfy. I thought the spaghetti was over cooked but just couldn't bring myself to down a star, I finished everything, including the bread and butter, which is the real stuff, land o lakes. The ingredients are all fresh including the bread which they get everyday. Very soft :3 What attracted me to this place was their pictures of the bbq brisket sandwich. I'm a sucker for some bbq sauce and cheese :3 The bbq sauce was good, not overly sweet. Brisket was tender but not chewy. The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of cheese. To be fair it was probably your average amount but pictures can be misleading. I was expecting a plethora =p If you are hoping for cheesey bbq goodness like I was ask for extra! I'm so glad I worked from home on Friday.. Mainly because I got to try this place, which seems like it's only open for weekday lunch. I'll purposely try to work from home now often so I can come back to try more of their sandwiches!! I got the BBQ brisket on french bread--only because they ran out of the dutch crunch (12:30pm on Friday). :( but that was okay because it was still super delicious. Asked the guy at the counter what cheese he recommended and he suggested the pepper jack cheese (it was a good choice). The sandwich came hot with melted cheese and a juicy BBQ brisket that made the bread a little soggy, but that was fine--I still dug in with my hands (this sandwich is not for the dainty). The brisket was super moist and flavorful, and while not super cheap, it's also not expensive ($8.35 for the 8"? sandwich, including tax). And while you may say 8" is not very big, oh, does this sandwich pack a punch and fill you up. Only downside for me was the couple of fat pieces in the brisket, but I'm also just weird about meat fat.. For first time customers, it goes like this: Order on the left side, wait for your order to be called, then pay. Took about 10 minutes for my order to be ready, so don't come if you're in a super rush. read more

Hole in the wall with fantastic sandwiches, salads and soups Well since I looked down at my frequent diner card and see I've had at least a dozen sandwiches here, I guess it's time to Yelp. I found this place strolling around the neighborhood of my new office and noticed a line out the door - but nobody was complaining. The huge menu board offers a range of meats, breads, cheeses, sauces, salads soups... staggering. And EVERYTHING is absolutely fresh and tasty every day. The roast turkey is right out of the oven, chunks of dark and white meat, goodness it's like thanksgiving on a dutch crunch roll. Pastrami and pulled pork also are homemade fresh and all the veggies on the sandwiches or salads likewise. They'll toast your sandwich unless you tell them not to, so make sure you order the way you want. Service is great - surprisingly fast for the number of sandwiches that go through the joint at lunchtime. The owner reminds me of a NYC counter person - no nonsense but very very nice. Their family also owns the two IB's sandwich shops in the area and the frequent diner card works at IB's also. My only complaint so far is that the chicken noodle soup is way too salty - i'll have to try it again to see if it was a bad day for the cook. If you want a great lunch - any combo or standalone soup, sandwich or salad with a drink is pretty much under ten bucks. Uptown Oakland is lucky to have the Lunch Box! This is my favorite sandwich shop in the bay area - come in yourself and find out why I give it five stars. I think you might too. read more

Delicious sandwiches you can fully customize. First time I've had an egg salad sandwich for a long time and it did not disappoint. I highest recommend any of the tapenades to put in your sandwich as well. The service is great and the workers are always pleasant. Love this place. The sandwiches always come out so clean looking and they don't drip. I love when you can take a bite of a sandwich without having everything spew out the other end. I also like when you can take a bite of each ingredient without pulling the entire thing out - it's the same feeling as biting pizza without the cheese coming off. So good really, I love dutch crunch pastrami with sweet pepper tapenade. Wish I had a picture but I can never wait to dig into my sandwiches. Online ordering is really easy and pickup is not too bad. They have a pretty wide selection of items on their menu including sandwiches, soups, salads, and wraps. All I've ever tried though are their sandwiches. Their lines do tend to build up around lunch time. However, they are very smart about how they take orders to speed up the process so I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes. My favorite sandwich by far has been the chicken salad sandwich on wheat with pepperjack cheese. For what you pay ($6,90 for the sandwich), it is definitely the best you can get in the area.
