Great find near Stowe. We were driving through smugglers notch and felt that we should finish dinner before reaching hotel. We just found it on the way and went in. Luckily we got seat straight away. We had one salad, one veg pizza and one sushi ordered and fist 2 item came pretty soon. We really liked both salad and pizza. Vegetables felt so fresh and taste was amazing. Sushi came after a while and it was little fancy as it was lit on the table to cook inside food. Taste was good but slightly burnt feeling because of fire. I will try other one next time. Interior is nice and have lot of space. We were seated on covered patio and next to us was a small stream flowing, that was nice touch. Step it up Matterhorn - please. We, too, are locals who mostly avoid Stowe in the winter, but dined one night before a show at Spruce Peak and before that a fall family dinner and both were not up to par at Matterhorn. We really look forward to long bike rides or runs in Stowe followed by dinner outside by the water at the Matterhorn, but our last two experiences were full of disappointment. The service was not as we remembered and the staff generally did not seem happy to be there and it was not busy at all. It's such a great menu and we love the setting by the river in the summer (occasional bear sightings too). We may give you another try in the spring, and we hope that you read your reviews and take action as such. Here's to improvement! read more

First off, I will say that this restaurant is not a perfect 5 stars because it is a little loud for me. But the music is lively and most people would enjoy the live performances in the front. We ordered different food including burgers and pizza and sushi. The pizzas were good and the burgers were very flavorful. The sushi tasted great and the wasabi was very strong. The wait was very long for the burger which is also why it is not a perfect 5 stars. Overall I would recommend the restaurant for people who are not noise sensitive and can wait. This a ski bar restaurant with decent pricing and healthy portions and friendly staff. It is a local favorite with a casual bar vibe. Definitely make reservations and dine early. We arrived around 5:15pm on a summer Friday so that made parking and seating much easier. The place is very large with backyard seating and they have a fun list of beers on tap. Our waiter was great - very accommodating and mostly attentive. Almost all the food had "yummy sauce" on it - someone needs to tell them that it's not so yummy - it's just super sweet mild BBQ sauce. We had heard they have great sushi. The Matterhorn poke bowl was good and I skipped the yummy sauce and opted for soy sauce instead - it was so huge that I managed to only eat half of it. The California roll was good too. The quality of the sushi is standard - about the same as Sushi Yoshi but definitely more food for the money. The selection is mostly rolls and a la carte sushi or sashimi by the piece so no sushi or sashimi dinner combinations. There is the party platter $99 for 5 rolls, 4 pieces of sushi and 8 sashimi but we'd probably still be there trying to finish it. The 12 oz NY strip steak was good and we skipped the bourbon sauce because it really doesn't need it. The glazed brussel sprouts were a surprise - a little dry and charred but flavorful and all were eaten. We wanted to try the chocolate confusion cake but had no room left! We were a bit disappointed when we responded that we'd like indoor seating and were not seated in the very popular indoor patio tables by the stream - it was our first time dining here so we didn't know to ask for that seating but it became obvious we were in the least popular seating as we sat by ourselves while the rest of the restaurant filled until a very large group arrived and were seated near us. This group enjoyed multiple pizzas. It is definitely kid friendly and good for large groups - just make sure you have reservations. For me a 3.5 stars but since the rating must a whole star and we will go back, I've rounded up. read more

1 star -- From a Decade-Long Local: The Matterhorn Has Lost Its Soul I lived in Stowe for ten years. The Matterhorn in Stowe wasn't just a bar to me -- it was the spot. Live music, a genuine apres-ski energy, pool tables, great company. And the food? Wood-fired pizza and wings that could hold their own anywhere, plus a sushi menu that genuinely surprised people from the coasts. I knew the owners. We were regulars. This place was legitimately special. I came back this week for the first time in a while, and I wish I hadn't. The moment we sat down, the bartender launched into a bizarre, unprovoked lecture at my friend about something he was apparently upset with her about during a previous visit. It was uncomfortable, it was inappropriate, and it set the tone for the entire evening. The service that followed was dismissive and condescending -- and we weren't alone. We could hear other tables expressing the same frustration. This wasn't a bad night. This was a culture. The food has followed the staff downhill. Nothing resembled what made this place worth talking about. Here's the thing about tourist traps: they work until the locals stop coming. I asked around after this visit, and it turns out most locals already avoid the Matterhorn. Now I know why. When a place stops caring about the people who built its reputation and just cashes in on foot traffic from people who don't know any better, the decline is fast -- and it shows. What a shame. The food was NOT anything to go out of the way for, but when you and/or your staff is too lazy to secure trash and are the reason a bear was shot and killed....reprehensible. If you don't want to go to using bear dumpsters, kindly lock it up EVERYTIME with a lock and chain. It isn't rocket science! A fun spot, very lively. Large bar area, great seating with views of the river. A large sushi menu, and a couple of other options as well. The lamb burger was ok, same for the Philly cheesesteak, the salad wasn't terrific though. The real answer is the pizza- great crust, fresh toppings, several different options, it was the best meal of the night. Drinks menu was ok, there is a full bar, but surprisingly not many hot apres ski drinks- a hot tottie and a schnapps hot chocolate (which was good). Went here with a group of 10 friends from a recommendation of one who has already been. We ordered a few pizzas, salads and other appetizers. The waitress was kind but the experience was absolutely a disaster. Some how she managed to double the orders of a few dishes. So instead of 3 pizzas, we were sent 6. The most disturbing part of the experience were the buffalo wings (see picture). When the wings first came out they were dry, no sauce and black. I indicated to the waitress that they had no sauce and she gaslit me and said it was lightly sauced. Because they were so burnt I sent them back. It took another 30 minutes for a fresh ordered of buffalo sauce wings to be made. As the waitress delivered them she immediately started apologizing because they were black again and again no buffalo sauce. I will not be back. read more

We had high expectations for the Matterhorn, but unfortunately our experience was very disappointing. The service throughout the meal was subpar and felt rushed from the start. The food itself was underseasoned and unremarkable, especially given the price point. The biggest issue, however, was how we were treated at the end of our meal. Despite having a reservation, our party of five was rudely asked to leave after only 40 minutes so that the table could be given to someone else. Multiple staff members approached us about leaving, even though we were still eating, wanted to order dessert, and had already spent over $250 on dinner. At no point were we lingering or told there was a strict time limit on the table. Being pushed out mid-experience, especially after spending that amount of money, was incredibly off-putting and left us feeling unwelcome and disrespected. A restaurant of this caliber should value its guests and communicate expectations clearly. Unfortunately, because of how this was handled, we would not return nor recommend the experience. read more

If you are skiing in Stowe you have to stop at least once and take in all that the Matterhorn has to offer. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect stepping into a après ski bar/restaurant. The decor is rustic, the views from the porch are magical, and the staff is kind, funny, and very attentive. The pizza, sushi, and drinks hit the spot and as crazy as the menu seems (pizza and sushi) it ensures that there is truly something for everything. Reservations didn't seem to be needed on a weeknight but we made them anyway, we also went on a Saturday and were glad we had them. It is a great mix of locals and tourist and a very diverse crowd that got along in a way that only Vermonters could. read more

I saw fantastic things about this restaurant and was looking forward to seeing what the hype was about. I was thrilled they had healthier options and got the ahi tuna tacos. On the second bite I realized the tuna was frozen in the middle and asked to order something else. Our server was lovely and let me order a burger instead, but the fish was frozen and my boyfriend's meal was unremarkable. The replacement burger was unfortunately very dry and bland and I'm opting to eat a microwave dinner instead. I wouldn't reccomend the food. To start, I never leave bad reviews especially on small local businesses but I felt compelled to after this horrendous experience. Me and my boyfriend are the easiest table to wait on, we have never once complained or sent food back and we are usually in and out. We walked into this establishment and got blasted with the smell of urine. The host was very nice and was the only good thing about this experience. He is the only reason why this place is getting one star, otherwise it would be zero if possible! We waited and waited for the server, who was extremely rude and acted like we were bothering her for just being there. We could see her talking to regulars at the bar instead of doing her job. After waiting 25 minutes and only being able to get a water that was warm with no ice in it, my boyfriend got up to go to the bathroom. She saw him and finally came over.. when I said I wanted to wait for him to order (I didn't know what he wanted) she laughed in my face and walked away. After this we were appalled and decided to immediately leave. She was training some young lady that I hope does not take any notes from her and honestly finds a better place to work. We made the mistake of giving this place a try despite all of the bad reviews. DO NOT make the same mistake we did. Save your time and go somewhere else. read more

Riding up the fourrunner quad, I asked our ski lift companions for a lunch recommendation and they suggested the Matterhorn for some drinks, burgers, and most importantly sushi! I had the Matterhorn Mule which was nice and refreshing! The ahi tuna nachos were an awesome appetizer and I gobbled those up. The spider sushi rolls were delicious but I wish I came with more pieces of sushi. My boyfriend had a burger with truffle fries- those fries were perfectly crispy and full of truffle flavor. Overall, the food was tasty with generous portions, and I can't wait to try more of the menu. It was pricey but I think it was well worth the cost and we'll definitely stop by next time we visit Stowe! read more

Real Après-ski! We visited The Matterhorn twice this week after excellent ski days. Both times we enjoyed wonderful, friendly and attentive service! Best truffle fries we've ever eaten! My martini was perfect and you can also count on q high quality selection of local beers. You wouldn't expect sushi in a spot like this but it ranks amongst the best we've had! I also loved that there were vegetarian sushi choices as well! Last night my daughter got the Chocolate Confusion cake but unfortunately I forgot to get a pic! She said it was delicious and it looked incredible. Old school classic Stowe atmosphere! Hang with the locals but keep your eyes peeled for the occasional celebrity! We had the most pleasant experience at the Matterhorn restaurant tonight. Based on some of the previous reviews, we expected poor service, but must admit we were pleasantly surprised. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. Our server was attentive and even though they were completely booked, he was more than efficient managing his tables. His recommendations were great. We started with the Ahi Tuna nachos, it was delicious and genius!! A very balanced combination of flavors, surprised not seen it on any menus before!!! For entree, we enjoyed the chicken pesto pizza (needed a bit more salt in the dough) and the Matterhorn Poke bowl. The Matterhorn bowl was amazing, loved the sauce they added on top of the sashimi. This place is great. I made reservations and requested a table by the river and got perfect seats with a great view of the river. Very much appreciate them honoring my request. We have been here before and my husband highly recommends the pizza and he is extremely picky about his pizza and crust. This time we had drinks and an appetizer. Ahí wontons. Oh my goodness. So delicious. My only wish was that the tuna had been spread out a little more. I have never seen or had anything like this before but it was delicious. We also had a couple of sushi rolls. They were fine but a little pricey for the size I thought and they weren't anything special. Drinks were excellent. Service was also excellent which we definitely appreciated. People come too hard for this place, Matterhorn is just an absolute cornerstone of the Stowe après scene! Matterhorn is situated on a snowy, babbling brook with a delicious eclectic menu ranging from your bar classics like wings, to surprisingly good sushi and what my husband refers to as bar pizza which was solid. This is a must visit when in town, check the schedule for live music and make reservations for a table accordingly because it will get busy. I'll admit that I definitely wouldn't have wound up eating sushi.. or even dinner.. at the Matterhorn last night if not for the recommendation of Tim the Wanderer whom I encountered at an upscale restaurant in the village on our first night in Stowe. The Matterhorn is located on Mountain Road on the far outskirts of Stowe and isn't much to look at from the outside (or the inside, really), but - as the locals obviously know (based on the absence of any out of state license plates in the small, but well organized parking lot) - the casual ambiance and much better than anticipated food is well worth the trip. Tim had recommended the sushi and told us to ask for any server whose name started with a J. We ordered the sushi, but couldn't confirm any of the servers' names started with the tenth letter of the alphabet. We started with the Ahi Tuna Nachos ($19), comprised of a generous portion of Ahi tuna lightly tossed in sesame oil and served with seaweed salad, Japanese tangy mayonnaise sauce, and creamy wasabi sauce served over crispy fried wontons. The flavors come together in a terrific fashion and the portion is generous enough for at least two hungry adults. I opted for the Samurai roll ($15), made with avocado, tempura asparagus, sriracha, topped with yellow tail, ponzu, cilantro and lemon zest, and the Firecracker roll ($13), made from spicy salmon, mango, cucumber, jalapeños, sriracha, and sesame seeds. The freshness and quality of the ingredients was obvious. My dining companion ordered the TNT roll ($19), made with cucumber, avocado and tuna inside topped with spicy tuna, jalapenos, cilantro and tempura flakes, and the Dynamite roll ($14), comprised of tuna, salmon, cucumber, avocado, and spicy sauce. My dining companion thought the Dynamite roll was a little too spicy for her tastes, but was amenable to swapping it for the Firecracker roll I had ordered.. which were covered in jalapeños.. so, take that for what you will. The freshness and quality of the ingredients, as well as the care of preparation, was obvious. Once again, Tim hadn't steered us wrong. Remember.. this is an authentic dive-bar with a loud, energetic, and cramped layout.. not just a fashionable aesthetic curated by image consultants for social media influencers' selfies. The beer list runs the gamut from Blue-collar macrobrews like PBR and LaBatt to hometown favorites like Switchback and Alchemist. Pro Tip: Make sure you get a TDAP vaccination before making your reservation. Just kidding. Try the Ahi Tuna Nachos. read more

Not entirely sure why this is the place to go in the area. We came a couple times. The first time the bartenders refused to acknowledge us, and once they did they forgot about half our order. My friend's glass also had a giant crack in it. We got a pizza and it was okay, nothing to rave about. We ordered wings as well and although they were really good, the bartenders forgot about them, we reminded them after about an hour, and then they forgot about them again.. and finally they came out after another 30ish minutes. The second time we ate here was much better. The sushi and seafood in general is actually really good, as well as the dumplings. Drive there was horrible. Nothing on the starters menu was calling to us so we got the Viagra sushi roll and that was delicious. It definitely held true to its name, furthermore we were left wondering how a burger took more than 25 minutes to come out after being ordered since that was our other entree. Once we got the burger, it was great. Since we went close to Valentine's Day there were hearts and lights hung up all over where we dined which made a cute environment. The drinks were overpriced for what we got--the spicy margarita was mostly just sour and I found my espresso martini unimpressive.
