Thanks to a tip from an online friend, I just ate breakfast at "The Oldest Restaurant in Downtown Asheville," which has apparently been around for something like 40 years. I'll admit I'm a bit ashamed of the fact that I've driven past it many times without ever really noticing it was there, big as life, on College Street. I walked into this unassuming diner and received a warm greeting from behind the bar. I love that. After finding a seat, the first thing I noticed was the soft background music - classic jazz. You hardly ever hear that in restaurants anymore. Really nice touch. The one negative of my visit was my server, a young brunette who seemed to have issues - whether with me or with life in general, I'm not sure, but her vibe, an unpleasant fusion of apathy, disapproval, and condescension, made a fifth star for this review altogether impossible. Another more mature server, I'm guessing maybe the manager or one of the owners, brought out my food and was delightful - she clearly understood what service is about. Here's a rule of thumb: If you wait tables in a restaurant that serves biscuits, you are friendly. Period. If you are incapable of that, please seek employment elsewhere - maybe, IDK, a career as a meter maid is right for you. My veggie and feta omelette was good, especially with a few globs of utterly un-Mediterranean Tapatío Sauce. The home fries could've been a little more crusty and golden brown, and needed salt, but were otherwise tasty. I got a pancake on the side and it was probably the best thing I had - big, fluffy, and flavorful with a hint of crunchiness along the edges, perfectly browned and dusted with powdered sugar. Gentle criticism - the menu needs updating. The building, the space, the music, they can and should all be historical, and that's great. The menu, not so much. Way too many items are ruined for vegetarians by bacon this, sausage that, blah blah blah, eww. Even the specials board, which featured more modern items, was riddled with animal products. Again, eww. There are great veggie-sausage products, and other meat substitutes, out there. Allow customers to sub those for meat in your dishes and BAM - you just took a giant culinary leap forward. P.S.: The coffee was great! I got a couple different answers as to what it was, but it was locally sourced, and generously refilled. read more

Was my first time in town so she gave me the run down of what to make sure to see while I was in town as well as gave me great food recommendations. Fantastic low key place for a meal that is not going to take you to the bank. I think what I liked most about it was the local feel. Granted, coming here on a Tuesday morning in early September during a pandemic might look a lot different than a Saturday in June without a pandemic. I was able to come in and grab some food and sit at the counter without a wait on food or seating. It was a nice refresher compared to my last visit to Asheville where there was a huge wait and on a weekend. I enjoy patronizing a place that doesn't require a lot effort. The Med is flawless in that delivery. From service to food, this is a great alternative to the trendy places in Asheville for breakfast or brunch. Fried chicken biscuit is really good wow. 3 egg omelette royals style is also good. Hash bowl was delicious, the sausage is a bit too salty though. HOWEVER, be aware of the wait time. The Med seems to be constantly understaffed with only 2 cooks, and when you see a full board of orders then it will be like 25-30 mins wait time, and that's the sole reason of me not giving 5 stars. In terms of COVID precaution, they are limiting capacity according to N.C. mandate so it is what it is. Still a small diner with no outdoor seating. So be aware of that if you care. read more

This diner is small but mighty and is definitely doing its part to social distance during these crazy times. After a quick Yelp search for breakfast on my recent trip to Asheville, I went with this place because of its wildly positive reviews and adjacent location to our hotel. After looking at the menu, I called and ordered the Veggie Omelet for myself with a side of grits and a biscuit, and my boyfriend got the Western Omelet. Y'all. That biscuit was buttery and flaky and dense and I really just want another one to enjoy while I'm writing this review. So. Good. The omelet was chocked full of fresh veggies and the arugula I added was just the right touch. Bring in a bunch of feta and it was a nice hearty breakfast with a little less guilt. My first brunch in Asheville and this little diner did not disappoint! We went around noon and only had to wait about 20 minutes. Everything on the menu sounded delicious so my friend and I ordered a couple of different things. Their gravy is very well seasoned and felt hearty ... didn't know that was possible with biscuits and gravy, but they did it! It has a little kick, but not overwhelming for those that don't do spice. I ate the hash bowl and it did not disappoint at all! The potatoes were perfect and then add the brava sauce, even more perfect! My friend had a pancake with eggs and sausage. After hearing other recommend this restaurant, we tried it, snd were very disappointed. We waited more than forty minutes to get in, then waited several minutes for just coffee. No silverware to stir in the sweetener. When our order was finally taken, an additional twenty minutes passed. Hubby ordered eggs over medium with toast. The eggs arrived without the toast. After trying to get the server's attention for several minutes, he finally went to get the toast. By then, the eggs were cold. Server did not offer to redo order. Only took off $3.75. Me and my boyfriend wanted to start my birthday off right with an excellent birthday breakfast and we achieved that by going here! We were greeted immediately as we walked through the door and received several options for seating. We didn't have to wait but two minutes to order and receive our drinks. We popped in for late breakfast/early lunch on our way out of town. For some reason this place has never been on our radar before, but it's definitely there now!! I was eyeing the sandwiches but really wanted some eggs too. I settled on the Royale which was one of their scrambles complete with meat, comeback sauce, eggs, grilled peppers and onions and potatoes....it was perfect and hit all I was looking for from a smash up between a burger and eggs!! The biscuit rounded things out and had a little hint of pepper. Hubs got the breakfast tacos which were really tasty too. The pico and cheese were nicely balanced. Breakfast potatoes were balled up and not in diced portions. Crusty on outside and undercooked in middle of potato ball. We were served badly burned biscuits With bottoms like hockey pucks. had to complain and served same overcooked biscuits with less burn on bottom. not tasty and not edible. brought biscuit and omelette issue to attention of staff and no apology or remedy offered. We ate here on our first morning in Asheville. It has several things going for it: it is the earliest-opening breakfast place downtown (few open before 8 a.m., apparently); also, prices are low. Depending on where you are staying, it should be a fairly short walk as it is centrally located. Street parking seemed relatively easy in the very early morning from what I observed (though we walked there). The atmosphere is pretty bare-bones, old school diner. The clientele largely seemed to be 'regulars'/locals, though there were a few touristy-looking tables. The food was pretty good - what you'd expect in a diner.
