I love supporting local coffee shops, so when this one popped up near my house I had to give it a try. The décor is super cute and inviting. All of the workers here have been really friendly as well. I've been here a handful of times, and my favorite things so far are the iced vanilla latte and the bacon & cheddar biscuits. They use Stumptown coffee (which I love) and have the best ice. I know it's kind of weird, but I really appreciate when places have the smaller crushed iced. The chocolate chip cookie was pretty good too! I was not a fan of their cinnamon roll and found it to be on the drier side. Parking has been pretty easy for me every time I've stopped by. There's plenty of spots on Long Beach Blvd. and if not, there's the neighborhood right by Long Beach Creamery. read more

I came here for a meeting and this place was so adorable! Staff was super friendly as well. I didn't get anything to drink this time:( but I got a pinwheel which was pretty good. It was also easy to park right on the street. It is small though so it's better for intimate conversations. They also have outside seating for these lovely sunny days! I'm so happy that there's a new bakery / coffee shop down the street from my house! I just wished the hours were extended a little later because I get out of work at 5PM! I ordered an ice vanilla latte with soy milk and it was perfect! - Not too sweet, and not too bland. I also ordered 2 cookies and a cinnamon bomb. I haven't tried the cookies yet... but the cinnamon bomb was the freaking bomb! It tasted like a cinnamon roll without the icing, and the texture on the inside was so nice and fluffy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming! I'll be coming back to try out their other goodies! There is some street parking and an adjacent parking lot, but not sure if that is for the store. read more

It simply is not excusable to run out of food before 10:00am when you're basically a breakfast-pastry-coffee place. The girl at the counter told us that there were office parties and for that reason, not including 8 or 10 cookies, they were left with four croissants (chocolate) to choose from. That is no good reason. The Merchant undeniably has excellent baked goods. Maybe the best in Long Beach. So it is expectable that there will be large orders from time to time, but IT IS ONLY REASONABLE TO ASK CLIENTS TO GIVE THEM LARGE ORDERS AHEAD OF TIME. Their customers should behave like grownups, and respect the establishment. Not descend on the place like a Mongol horde armed with pink boxes! Now, it was too bad that the girl at the counter was alone in an empty store. Had the owner or a manager been there it would have been a chance to let us know they acknowledged things had gone wrong, and to make it up to us in almost any way he thought was right. And of course the young girl needn't have taken the heat of unsatisfied fans going away empty-handed. I haven't forgotten their excellent touch with pastries, and will come back, and hope FOR THE STORE'S SAKE that this will be a lesson learned. read more

I've been coming to the merchant for a couple years now and up until recently, I've never had any bad experiences when going. The coffee is usually great, staff are welcoming and environment is warm and friendly, but one of the workers has turned me off from going back. Over the last few months a girl with short brown hair and bangs who claims to be a manager has been there or helped me and I can't say I was pleased any of the times I was helped by her. She has a snarky attitude and always has an aggressive tone towards her coworkers. I've never noticed any irritable behavior between employees unless she's present. On top of that, she doesn't seem to know how to pull espresso shots properly considering my coffee always tastes bland or acidic when she makes it. Amber, Tara Lauren and frankly anyone else that works there always gets my drink right and have a friendly attitude as well. I know it's not just me because my friends that go also agree she doesn't make good coffee. I'm extremely disappointed that the owners/boss would put such a person in charge that brings down the other employees and the overall vibe of the shop. Put a less entitled person in charge that knows how to make coffee and you'll have my business again. read more

What a neat little spot! Very impressed. Came here on a whim while in the area for business. I was looking for a unique, quality spot to pick up breakfast pastries and coffee for a client I was visiting a few blocks away. Couldn't have found a better spot. The pastry selection was remarkable and equally as appetizing. There were several artisan options to choose from, each looking like a work of art. I enjoyed the unique variety - the "everything" croissant was a winner in my book. I also needed a large carafe of coffee for my client, and what a carafe it was. Rather than a disposable cardboard coffee holder, i was provided with a large steel thermos of coffee, complete with all the fixings. The staff allowed me to borrow it without putting down a deposit which I thought was pretty neat - so long as I returned it thereafter. Worked out great as it kept the coffee hot for the hours I was with my client that day. Hope to come back again sometime! read more

Walked over today for their delicious scones and cookies. Their everything scone is so good I could eat one every day and those chocolate chip cookies were the perfect amount of chewy and crispy. It was very busy but the staff was calm and kept smiles on their faces. I would love to see sandwiches at lunch and maybe some avocado toast at breakfast. Can't wait to go back. We did notice that it's very expensive. $3 for a cookie with tax. Delois sells their amazing cookies for $1. All time favorite coffee shop! Delicious coffee and pastries, and super welcoming staff. I love the vibe of the store and would definitely come with my laptop to get some work done! Only issue is that their food is so good it sells out fast! If you want a large selection, definitely get there on the early side. Excellent coffee, beautiful looking-tasty-pastries that are freshly made that same morning (I've seen it). More people need to stop here so the Merchant can expand their menus to include even more items. The exterior is also very pleasant and peaceful. I stopped by here on my break from work and was immediately floored by how cute this place was. Though it was a small location, there were plenty of seats both indoors and outdoors. The staff here were very friendly and offered suggestions. But the main reason I wanted to write a review was because, oh my lanta, the coffee is so good. I've been plenty of coffee shops in Bixby Knolls and this is by far one of the best. I ordered a hot 12oz vanilla honey oat latte, which is a speciality drink they have right now, and I was blown away by the flavors. It's just the perfect amount of sweet and bitter. The coffee was really smooth and it had a good hint of honey, rather than an overload of sugar. While it was a little pricey, $5, I understand that this type of drink won't be around all the time and I wanted to try it. Otherwise, the prices are pretty comparable to other shops in the area. Quaint little bakery & coffee shop in Bixby Knolls that makes you feel all warm & fuzzy inside. The latte with almond milk is smooth and not too strong, so if that's your thing you'll like it. The chai tea latte may not be what you're used to. It isn't pre-mixed into something sweet/spicy. It is literally a chai tea bag with some steamed milk. There is also a no-fuss selection of Stumptown coldbrew sold in bottles and cartons. The highlight of this place are the baked goods. They don't have a means to warm up your food (...yet?) but it's fresh and satisfying. The cookies and cinnamon rolls are a comforting treat. I also tried the banana walnut bread and sausage+cheddar biscuit which were also good. Most of these stars are for the bakery and the aesthetics. And the overall vibe is just so nice. What a horrible experience we've had with the condescending staff there. No bread or coffee is worth how terrible the customer service (or lack thereof) this place gives. The manager was unnecessarily rude to us over a very simple refund that could've been resolved in minutes but he dragged it out for days and didn't end up fixing anyway. I guess they don't really care about giving a good experience. Customer service is not a thing they comprehend. I will never spend another penny there and I hope you won't either. read more

Yummy coffee and nice experience overall. The barista who took our order was very nice and patiently explained what some of the coffee menu items were. I had regular drip coffee which was perfect for what I was wanting that day- something warm and with strong coffee flavor. There are some tables outside and some inside- cute, quaint atmosphere. It's fair to say I've driven by this place hundreds of times. Today is the day I finally went in because I had a need for stellar coffee. Yes, it had to be "stellar" coffee. The place I used to go to, Fox coffee, closed. And it's been a while since I've made the local coffee shop rounds. It's Friday, I've had a long week, and my Nespresso home coffee (although usually wonderful) was not going to cut it today. In fact when I got my Nespresso machine I basically stopped going to Starbucks. This is all to say that I do love coffee, I'm somewhat picky about it, and I know when good coffee just isn't going to be good enough. This place did not disappoint. I had the honey vanilla oat latte and it was just what I needed to get me through this Friday. I had not planned to order any pastries but once I got there and saw their amazing selection and they were so nicely displayed, I could not help myself. I ordered the cheese guava croissant and had it warmed up after they offered. It's amazing, soft, and very fresh. Highly recommend. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Prices were fair.
