We stopped at the Odeon for lunch while in TriBeCa. We came in right around 11am, so the restaurant was quiet and there was no wait. The most exciting part was spotting Jake Johnson from New Girl (star stuck). But I digress! The food was great! We got mixed greens, a tuna burger with wasabi mayo and Gruyere macaroni and cheese. The tuna burger was delightful and so were the fries. But the real winner was the macaroni and cheese! So creamy, topped with breadcrumbs, and baked to perfection! This is a diner on viagra. Very creative menu, stylish decor, packs of servers. I admit that they cram people into tight spaces and tables are close to each other. It's a classic trendy resto that deserves its due for being an institution for so many years. Even give credit for the stylish wash rooms. The food is excellent. Basic dishes made better. SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE: I came here for brunch with three friends on a Sunday around noon (we had made a reservation the day before online). I think my biggest gripe was that the tables were SO CLOSE TOGETHER. It felt uncomfortably cramped (you couldn't even scooch your chair in or out without hitting someone), and it seemed to be creating a lot of stress and hurdles for the wait staff (constantly having to reach over people, etc.). Because the restaurant was so busy (every single seat was filled), the service wasn't what I was hoping. No major issues, but dishes came out a bit slow and we weren't greeted by our server for the first several minutes of being there. For the price, I would've hoped for better. FOOD: At my table, people ordered the pancakes, the croque monsieur, the french onion soup, the corned beef hash, and the omelet with potatoes. We also shared the warm doughnuts to start. The doughnuts were really good and the perfect little bite to start the meal off with--I'd recommend them. But other than that, the food was all meh--perfectly fine, no major issues, but largely forgettable and felt way over-priced for the portions and the quality. I've had better pancakes for a third the price. DRINKS: I didn't order it, but two of my friends had the spicy bloody mary, which they both said was really good (I think it was a special-it's not always on their menu). My mimosa was good-very standard. Overall, I'd say that you're way over-paying, probably largely due to this being in TriBeCa, where they can charge those prices for mediocre food and it's expected. I would encourage the management to have a few fewer tables or have them be more spread out--the money you may lose in cutting those tables, you'd probably gain back in creating a better dining experience for your guests, thereby creating potential long-time customers. read more

Have been dining here for years when I lived in NYC. Recently, went for Sunday brunch with some friends and boy has this place gone down hill. First off, we arrived right at 10:00 a.m. for our reservation because I had a flight out of LAG in early afternoon. Our entire experience was RUSHED. It was like they couldn't wait to turn the table or something. It was constant. We finally asked them to stop because it was ruining our experience. I ordered the onion soup which the server told me was for two people, it was not and so disappointing. I make a wonderful onion soup and I think I could teach them a thing or two. Both of dining companions had a brunch special and all the food came out so fast, kind of cold and just not good. There are so many places to eat in NYC, and I would not go back there. Besides the really great food, what makes Odeon so great is the atmosphere--both classic & cool. The dining room is candle lit & the waiters are dressed formally in white. My favorite thing to order is the burger, which you can add bacon & cheese to (lots of cheese types to choose from). Classic & great! It comes with fries, or a side salad--a really good side salad. They have an amazing wine list, but get a recommendation from their staff - they know everything! I lived and studied in Paris for 6 months, trust me: this is the real deal. Don't bother making a reservation for this over-priced, just OK restaurant. It won't matter. Say you make a reservation for two at 7:30pm and one of you arrives at 7:25pm and the other at 7:35pm. You'll end up waiting until 8pm and wondering how you'll end up being treated because, as the host says, "Sorry, but we're having trouble moving people along." IOW, they can't manage their space _and_ they pressure customers to hurry up when they are crowded. As to the food, it's overpriced and meh. Not terrible but not good enough to support the prices. $12 for a 3-inch diameter bowl of Shepherd's Pie that more onions than potatoes? $11 for a side of fries? $11 for a salad consisting of three pieces of nearly wilted (but oh-so-fashionable) greens? I've never appreciated restaurants that trade on pretense: being fashionable, for example, or having the "right" diners. The Odeon not only trades on pretense -- it's all that recommends this restaurant. read more

I treated myself to lunch at the Odeon yesterday when I had jury duty across the street. I had the Croque Monsieur with an egg on top, which was good but not fantastic. The atmosphere was very pleasant at lunchtime during the week. There were a number of other diners eating alone, so I didn't feel uncomfortable being there by myself. All in all, I think I would go back for lunch, but I don't know if it would be worth it for dinner. It is a little pricey - my sandwich and a diet coke came to $24 including tip - and while the food is good, I think you are paying more for the cool atmosphere and location. I half expected to see a celebrity dining next to me, but alas, it was mostly business lunches and Tribeca moms. read more

It is quite a feat for a NYC restaurant to remain open and relevant for over three decades. The Odeon is just as good today as it was when it first opened in the early 80s. The onion soup was and still is the best I have ever had. Slightly sweet but not salty, deeply rich broth (no mushy bread in it either) slathered with melted gruyere cheese makes for one deep connection between man and food. The Creekstone Steak au poivre is 8oz. of tender, beefy bliss. The frites are crispy, golden morsels of perfection. The cheeseburger is fantastic. The house made doughnuts are literally manna from heaven. The hip, retro, deco space and the outstanding service truly make for a fantastic, unpretentious and memorable meal. read more

I'd been going to the Odeon since the 1980s, but a recent bad experience ended that ritual. My friend and I were seated in the gradually filling restaurant at a table next to a woman on her cell phone, who loudly conducted business for the 45 minutes we were there. She was on Speaker, so we had to listen to both sides of the stressful, contentious conversation. I went to the hostess, who asked the woman to go of Speaker. She did, but the one-sided conversation continued, her unpleasant voice--a juggernaut of importunate angst--carried stridently over the general din. Again I approached the hostess, who sympathetically shrugged and said there was nothing she could do about it. After our ruined meal, we went outside and my friend politely talked to the manager. The manager was offensive, downright rude. He essentially dismissed us as if our complaint was unreasonable. My friend and I were put in such an unpleasant position that we decided never to go back. read more

Ive stopped by the Odeon twice for a brunch and lunch. With all the talk about how so many high profile people stop in you would imagine quite the food and decor. My was I surprised with such a simple menu Im pleased because it means more practice at making a great dish and not having to worry about 400 different dishes. Each time the food was only slightly above average quality, and the portion for the price is way off. If you can afford to eat 3 full meals here, you can just afford to hire a private chef for the day, and maybe save a few bucks. I've been here twice and had the omelette with fries both times. The food was good enough to be memorable (to be fair, I'm not sure how you could mess up eggs), but the portion size could have been bigger as I definitely didn't feel full when I left either times. The service was above average, which is why I feel I should call it out - the servers who waited on my tables were attentive, quick, and very accommodating. Burrata Very tasty and flavor burrata. I was a little worried that the garlic toast would overwhelm the burrata but no problems there. And the small tomato halves added a nice burst of juice and flavor with bites of the burrata and bread. Baby Kale Caesar Salad Really tasty dressing and the parmesan crisps was a nice touch. But waaaaay too small to be charging $16 for the salad. Steak Tartare I really enjoyed the dish. One potential fault would be seasoning. Too much horseradish mixed in made it so that it was very difficult to really taste the actual beef. And from a bistro kind of odd to get steak tartare without a quail egg on top. It's not one of my favorite steak tartares but it wasn't bad at all. Spicy Chicken Dumplings Kind of disappointing all around. The skins were way too thick, filling not very flavorful. And the blue cheese dipping sauce I could have sworn it was just plain ranch and didn't realize it was supposed to be blue cheese until my friend told me. French Onion Soup Gratinee I didn't really want to order this since it was a pretty warm evening when my friends and I went but my friend wanted it and to be honest, I would get it again for sure. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't overly salty like I come to expect from a lot of French onion soup. That really allowed the flavors of the carmelized onions and wine to come through. Crisp Squash Blossoms Squash blossoms are always good to get, especially when they're in season. In my opinion not something that could be easily screwed up. I really liked The Odeon's take on the dish, not an overwheling stuffing and just lightly fried. Sweet Corn Ravioli Probably my favorite dish of the night. Really nice, strong sweet corn filling. I love corn as well as mixing sweet and savory things in dishes. Some sweet corn pureed and added to the sauce would have taken it over the top. The truffles were a good idea but pretty flavorless, could have done without it. But so long as it didn't bump up the price of the dish, no big deal. NY Strip Steak Frites w/ Roquefort My friend had ordered the NY strip with Roquefort. Big mistake in my opinion as the cheese overpowered the beef. It's supposed to be a dry aged steak but with the cheese brushed off I couldn't tell if the funk was there or not. Unfortunately the steak was overdone. Ordered it at medium rare, came to us just around medium well. Without the option Roquefort (totally our mistake), and if it was cooked to the ordered temperature, this could have been a really good plate of steak frites. I can't fault the restaurant for the cheese on top (other than maybe even offering it as an option for a dry aged steak) but I do wish it wasn't so overcooked. Burger w/ Bacon and Cheese Solid burger, came with a sauce that I assume was for the burger but was excellent with the fries. Like the strip steak though, overcooked. Fortunately I don't mind so much when a burger is overcooked versus something like a steak. Biggest knock is the price, $23 with the cheese and bacon options. Not the most overpriced burger I've had but I feel it would be better in the sub-$20 or exactly $20 with the bacon and cheese included. Croque Monsieur w/ Egg My friend's favorite dish of the night and I have to admit it was really good. Prosciutto might have been a little wasted since the cheese, ham, and sauce just covered up the prosciutto but it was still nice it was there. Macaroni and Cheese Don't bother. Lacked a good, cheesy flavor, was kind of mealy (I'm guessing because of the breadcrumbs in a sauce not creamy enough). Also a tiny portion for the money; the mac and cheese is their most expensive side... Desserts Got the doughnuts and the Odeon sundae for dessert. Doughnuts were a fried a little too long for my tastes but the raspberry jam and maple sauce were so good they helped me ignore the overly cooked doughnuts (especially the dryness). The ice cream in the sundae didn't seem all that special, but once again the sauces were fantastic. The fudge was really thick flowing and I personally love butterscotch, especially warm butterscotch poured over ice cream. Overall I felt like the food was pretty good and pretty comparable to a lot of bistros. If a lot of the dishes were a few dollars cheaper, or if the portion sizes were bigger then I would consider it at least a better value. Service was okay, basically what I expect from a bistro. Get your order, serve you your food, and replenish drinks as needed. When we were served our apps, we had 2 plates of tartare placed down and was missing the salad. After we informed our waiter asking if we had accidently ordered 2 plates of tartare, he said no, took the extra plate away, and we didn't get the salad until after we were finished with the rest of the apps. That's about the only knock to service I can give. read more

The Odeon surprised me for a few reasons the first time I went. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I was pleased at the young hip crowd that seemed to fill the restaurant. It's a very beautiful restaurant and the staff was really pleasant. The food was good, I expected it to be amazing but maybe I was just so excited that I was holding the bar too high. I love, LOVE, love the Odeon. It is has been one of my go to places since the 1980's. Many late nights, were enjoyed there, as well as dinners with my friends and then dinners with my children. Last week I met some friends there for an early dinner. I ordered the French onion soup and the frisée salad. I have had both there many times. Unfortunately the French onion soup was the worst French onion soup I have ever had, at Odeon or anywhere else. The chef must have added sugar instead of salt. Ugh. And the frisée salad? I have had frisée salad there many times, but this time was disappointing. The parts were all there but it was tasteless. What happened? We split the burrata as a table, which was nice if a bit small, while I had a burger for my entree and part of a friend's lamb chop. Summary: Trendy Tribeca bistro with classic Downtown NY vibe and beautiful food that is tasty but comfortable. Drinks are great. Cool to catch up with a friend at the bar. Atmosphere: This is a classic downtown bistro gastropub-ish type feel. Good for the trendy set. In classic NY Style, you can dress up, down, or some hipster combo of both and be right at home. It's great if you've got that type of mixed group of friends and this is a great spot for pre-party food. The Service: It's decent, discrete. Not too in your face and not crazy trying too hard. The food: We both had different salads and fries that night. The menu is full of fairly heavy dishes, which is right for fall, but this has been one really hot extended summer. Both salads were nicely done without too much dressing, bringing out the fresh flavors of the season. They are not afraid of letting the bitter of the greens remain. I have mixed feelings about that, but would watch it if you are not into it. Creme brulee was wonderfully French and nicely done. Their coffee is delicious. You can practically feel the history at this classy veteran New York establishment. The soft jazz in the background and the very friendly staff. Sometimes that's just what you need. I would characterize the menu as updated American interspersed with some French classic dishes. The tuna burger, made with sushi grade tuna is the best tuna burger I've ever had! The Niçoise salad, however, was not living up standards. The medium rare tuna was cooked to perfection, the potatoes were nice and creamy, lovely niçoise olives...but the pickled peppers AND the pickled tomatoes made it a wet vinegary yucky mess. The Odeon is a long time fan favorite in my house. This is one of our favorite spots in the city to grab a delicious and quick bite to eat. Just a heads up as the restaurant can get packed as it is very close to the financial district, so making a reservation is probably best if possible. I went with my usual order of a cheeseburger, while my friend got the Trout... no complaints! The one issue I have with The Odeon is the pricing as it can be relatively expensive. The service and the food were A worthy! Definitely a spot worth checking out. read more
