Got here around 10:30am on a Saturday, and most of the trucks had already started serving food. Given how early it was, we had no problem finding a table in the shade. That said, the place really started to fill up about 40 minutes after we had arrived. If you're planning to take advantage of the free parking, come early in the day. I ordered from the Thai food truck, and my meal was cooked in under 10 minutes. For $10 I got chicken fried rice and a bottle of water. The food tasted good, and was very fresh. My boyfriend ordered from Dock & Roll, but wasn't so lucky. Despite ordering 10 minutes before me, he didn't get his food until at least 5 minutes after I got mine. By the time he did get his food, they had made the wrong thing. Very disappointing all around. This place is dog friendly! We had our dog with us and so did many other people. There a few different food trucks in this foodtruck court with semi-covered seating in the middle. There is ample parking in the back and a bunch of annoying pigeons to scavenge the food. The options are - Thai, Venezuelan, TexMex, Cajun/Greek, Italian, Fried American stuff, Acai bowl/smoothie and cupcakes. The Italian food truck was awesome - kids got different kinds of pasta and every one of them was phenomenal. Red sauce in the pasta was fresh and delicious. French fries from Mighty cone was awesome. I mean, I love the food that comes out of trailers, the creativity the chefs produce out of a tiny truck, the freedom they have to produce some interesting stuff in a low overhead, non-brick and mortar place, but trailers in general are very frustrating for me. So what are the 3 Terrors of the Trailer Park? Do they have parking and a spot to actually eat your food? We figured this out pretty fast...lots of parking, lots of picnic tables AND big fans to help you stay cool under a covering awning. Do they take credit cards or do I need to dig in my car seat for quarters? Yes, yes they do take credit cards here, some even have the nifty iPad payment/signature thingy. There is also an ATM on site, however unneeded. But, you say, what about the H.O.B.'s??? Hours of Business, I ask? I don't think they exist. But here they do! According to their FB page they are 11:00-9:00 and on the particular Wed evening I went, all but one trailer was open and happy to serve (shakes angry fist at Hey, You Gonna Eat That or What?!). Yes, I could be quite happy living here for some time....with a smorgasbord of food like giant fish tacos from Surf n Turf, truffle mac n cheese from Ms P's Electric Cock, and the brussel sprouts and churros from Tapas Bravas. While in Austin on a recent trip, The Picnic was definitely one of the places we were excited to visit as tourists, and this food truck park helped us make the most of a sunny winter day. The Picnic is located near Zilker Park and Barton Springs, so it's a great lunch to get lunch before visiting those places. It's apparently BYOB (but we didn't see any liquor around) and BYOD (lots of pups!!). The food trailer options offer something for nearly everyone; Thai, Brazilian, Venezuelan, Italian, Cajun, and BBQ. We opted for a couple of dishes each so we'd have a nice spread to share. Here is what I'd recommend from what we had: The red chicken curry (with rice) from Coat and Thai Pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) from Acai Hut Coconut gelato from Cannone Chicken and avocado cone from The Mighty Cone (unanimously the best thing we ate that afternoon; the sweet and spicy sesame coating on both the fried chicken and the avocado was delicious!) Most stalls sell water and other non-alcoholic beverages, but they're overpriced, so I'd recommend getting your own. There is a parking lot behind the food truck park, and we had no issues finding a space. There are about a dozen picnic tables covered with umbrellas, and there are bathrooms as well. The only drawback is that there are quite a few pigeons that are attracted by food scraps, so if you're like me and hate them with a passion, the whole experience is a little jarring. read more

This is the former Barton Springs Food Court moved to newer and better digs. The Barton Springs Food Court was a former empty lot on Congress filled with food courts all of whom moved en masse to better digs because they were evicted. That said, this son-of-a-son-of-a-place aspires to be the premier court for food trucks in Austin - and they have a credible claim for the title. You need all of the above to make it as an outdoor food court: a)excellent food trucks b) a strong location c) strong facilities They've got the package. They have a fine pavilion to eat under that is architectually well designed, and looks cool-keep-Austin-weird. The ceilings have giant fans to keep you cool in hot weather - a definite plus. They have pleasant permanent bathrooms, kept clean by zealous control with lock and key. They play music. (Top 40 hits from a year ago but you can do worse.) They are on Restaurant Row near Zilker Park which is a fine location. Frankly - as soon as they moved in - they IMMEDIATELY became THE BEST restaurant on Restaurant Row. This is a sad commentary on the lame tame places that comprise the Barton Springs Road competition. The food trucks there are legitimate premium contenders. You have Hudson's on the Bend's spinoff the Mighty Cone serving elaborate wild game concoctions and vegan alternatives for the cowardly or principled. They have Hey You Gonna Eat or What? which is a fine fine sandwich establishment. There are serviceable kebab and mexican and grilled whatever trucks. There is a good for you juice and smoothie truck if you are not quite healthy enough to make the walk over to Casa de Luz. There is Hey Cupcake which is considered to be the best cupcake business in Austin. (Why, oh lord, why???) But the landlord can say she has a number one cupcake truck on her premises to go with Hudson's Mighty Cone and Hey You Gonna Eat? So there are good things for the having at the Picnic - and the physical amenities are certainly first rate. And when you get down to it, this may in fact BE the best court for Food Trucks in Austin. This is one of the coolest places in Austin by far. Its right next to zilker park and they finally have a really good set of trailers around. Before it was kinda lacking, but since they have been there for a while they are really stepping it up. First they have the seedling truck which I find to be my personal favorite. Mostly because they have really fancy food for cheap and thats always my style. Next they have Hey Cupcake which is fantastic. After that they have the best tacos at Tapos Bravos and they are amazing. Plus if you really like seafood they have this MEGA trailer there that serves some pretty delicious eats. The atmospher is pretty rocking as well. They have BIG ASS FANS, yes they are called BIG ASS FANS, out in their really nice seating area. The seating area is painted picnic tables and a canopy that you can sit under and get out of the rain if you needed to. Its probably the nicest place to sit down outside of any trailer park out there. Also, they have bathrooms as well located right there and they are pretty decent as well. One thing that I would complain about is prices, I would say you probably pay a whole dollar or 2 more than you would at other trailer parks, but the place is pretty high quality. read more

First the brussels sprouts... they were the best I've ever had that didn't include bacon. They may have been simply the best ever. From their description: "Once these fresh Brussels Sprouts are flash-fried and dusted with sea salt, they become the perfect partner with our fresh garlic alioli as a dipping sauce. The crunchy and flaky leaves retain a fresh green taste thanks to the lack of breading and the absence of unnecessary garnishes and flavor enhancers and the caramelized centers showcase the nutty and rich nature of this vegetable. " Now, the sandwich. First of all, it's too big for one normal human. I ate half of it and am totally stuffed. I'm taking the other half to work tomorrow. My description? Really, really good.
