The food missed seasoning and prep overall, though the pizza is pretty killer. 5/5 pizza - crispy exterior, perfectly cooked crust. Sauce was subtle, but the best part was the honey drizzle. Definitely a highlight. 3/5 cauliflower - it's called crispy cauliflower but it had no trace of crispness. Tasted like a blanched and roasted under seasoned head of cauliflower with a really nice sauce and cashews. I'd love if they had a chili oil crunch on top for added texture. 1/5 seafood paella - it didn't make sense. It was an under seasoned (like no salt at all) tomato seafood soup with baby scallops that tasted defrosted. The rice was basically a baked ahead of time cake thing, that sat like a boat in tomato soup. This isn't paella. No saffron flavor, overly tomato-y. We were hype on this and it just didn't work. It was nice to sit outside (sans the recurring fly that hovered the whole time) and our server was nice. The beer selection is decent. Would come back to try other pizza pies. read more

We got the Cassidy and the chemistry pizzas, both of which were nice, but not earth shattering. Just reliable good pizzas with a nice crunchy but chewy crust. Seems like their menu is updated often which is cool. Ambiance seemed nice indoors but we sat outside since it was a beautiful day. Still really enjoy their pizzas! Nicely cooked in their stone oven. I usually just make my own and I just get basic pepperoni and jalapeños. Their jalapeños are fresh, I prefer the pickled one, but it's still really good. Their sausage and mushrooms pizza is excellent too! This time we decided to get the muffuletta which is basically a hot Italian sandwich. It was delicious. The deli meats were quality and the spread was this chopped pepperonici olive tapenade with lemon vinaigrette. Get it! read more

We haven't been back to this restaurant in years. I was craving some pizza and we were driving by this place. So we stopped in. I forgot how good this pizza was. It reminded my husband and I of New York style pizza. We loved it. We got 2 pizza's. They are are the smaller side. If we hadn't eaten ice cream before coming here, we definitely would've needed to order another pizza just for my son alone! lol I loved how the pizza was nice and thin and crispy on the bottom. They cook all the pizza in the wildfire oven. Which give the crust a good crisp on the bottom. I loved the pizza I ordered, the Fennel Sausage Pie. The sausage had a very good flavor with the sauce on the pizza. It went well with it. My daughter wanted a pepperoni pizza and we did like it. But the cheese was a little overwhelming. There's was a lot of it. I think next time we will say light on the cheese. We definitely will be back soon. To try other pizza and pasta! read more

Excellent thin crust pizzas with high quality ingredients. We've been coming here ever since we moved up to north county five years ago. I'd recommend anything off their menu from pizzas, wings, hot sandwiches, and salads. It's a cool casual spot to bring the dog and wife for a delicious pie and a couple of suds. I've lived in Oceanside my whole life and would always pass by privateer but never made it in until recently. And wow! I have been missing out!! The pizza has such a fresh taste and is absolutely delicious. The prices are appropriate for what you're getting and the service is stellar. I've been dreaming about the pizza since we last went (and all we got was a regular pepperoni lol). Seating inside is limited for bigger parties but the outside works great! This place hit the spot after a long day at Legoland. It is a very popular neighborhood spot but only a 20 minute wait on a Friday night. Great pizzas and good variety of other dishes. There is only beer and wine--lots of "Privateer private label" wines that I was curious about but ultimately too chicken to try. There was also a wine store next door and only a $10 corkage fee if you purchase a bottle from there. I didn't know about this until after I sat down and ordered but the next time I am in Oceanside, I will definitely be stopping by the wine shop before dinner. read more

Whenever I crave a Caesar salad, privateer is the place I go. I typically order just a half salad, and it is pretty filling itself. Staff is great & served almost instantly it seems like. Not used to such a quick turn around from ordering to serving, love it! I also noticed there are specials for each day. Definitely have to come by for comedy Tuesday. The habanero honey adds a really special flavor. I love the lemon ricotta on the Brixton. These are pizzas that you will never be able to get anywhere else. Let me tell ya about these meatballs! They tasted handmade and with the freshest of ingredients. One of the guys in my group couldn't stop raving about them and the sauce which tasted homemade. They were a great appetizer .. so great that we ordered more to go! The pizza I had was good-- basic pepperoni, olive and mushroom. The meatball marinara paired really well with the pizza crust for maximum dipping. The vibe of this place is chill and fun, kinda hipster. They have a cool wine wall where you can purchase bottles and it adds to the ambiance to get to see what others are picking. Our waiter (his name escapes me... Colin maybe?) was outstanding. Very personable, knowledgeable about the menu and a great guy to keep the smiles going. He also had a gnarly beard. Cab, suggested the worst part about "oral sex" (Gary was a bit more evocative in his phrasing) was the view. being slightly far-sighted, everything that up close and personal looks a little fuzzy, so my perspective gives the experience a slightly different aesthetic. anyway, early in the film, Dell jumped on his cab's roof, threw in a snear and hip swivel, and announced he was not working on January 8th because that's Elvis's birthday (if southern Baptists were as fond of saints as catholics, Mr. Presley would have been canonized by now). last friday was more than five months after Elvis's birthday when i met my wife and step-mother-in-law for lunch (i know it's bad form to mix a mother-in-law and oral sex in the same review but bare with me there is a point). my earlier impression (gush factor seven) was spot on -- great neighborhood vibe, great salad, great pizzas, great beer selection. on an earlier visit Juliana, my teenage daughter, picked up her slice of cheese pizza and scowled, "this pizza's burned !!!" scrunching her nose, she studied it for a moment, devoured the whole thing and grabbed a second slice. here's the point -- she was able to move beyond the whole eat-first-with-your-eyes thing (see, i told you Gary Busey was relevant) and enjoy the pizza. if you're one of those un-evolved philistines that still thinks a bit of char doesn't add a nice, smoky, slightly caramelized taste to a slice of pizza, pick up the phone and call Domino's or Little Caesar. the few places that turn out a decent pie are too crowded already. my kid figured it out. if you're a conveyor-belt-wonder-bread pizza person and over eight, what's your excuse? Privateer Coal Fire Pizza produces a damn-near-perfect crust. i missed that little tang you get when dough's proofed overnight (or longer) but the pizza was crispy with a very nice chew.  the structure is full of nooks and crannies like a toasted english muffin. good eats and, unlike Gary Busey, i didn't even mind the view. read more
