This place sits in my heart as another Latina-owned and local business that everyone appreciates. I love how aesthetic they made their coffee shop, despite it being in such a small space. They promote so much culture and honestly I do not take any of that for granted. When Cafe Cordoba down the street is closed or too full at times, I usually go to this coffee shop. Their cafe de ollas are also the best in the nation as well -- hence, why I go to them so much more often. If you want to go for the pastries, go early though -- they usually either run out by mid-morning or even before. The hospitality at this coffee shop is top-notch. They literally make you feel at home, and their sandwich portions and their dessert portions are humongous. Any kind of cafecito you want? They got you. Feeling salty craving? They also got you as well. I love this place a lot, and it's definitely a staple to the Fruitvale community in Oakland.

Such a cute and authentic Mexican American café! The iced café de olla was absolutely delicious. The portions are generous, and the staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly. I had a great experience and would definitely recommend stopping by!

    Veggie sandwich and chipotle sandwich

Such a cute spot! I immediately felt at home when I walked inside, with the smell and decor feeling so familiar. The staff was very kind, and the food was delicious!! Their veggie sandwich is packed with perfectly seasoned veggies, and the baguette gives it great texture. The chipotle chicken sandwich was the best chipotle my boyfriend has ever had (and he loves a chipotle sandwich), not to mention, the cafe de olla was everything I needed and more. Will definitely be returning to this lovely spot.

Chipotle Sandwich and El Despreciado Sandwich

This place is amazing! I found it on a whim. It is very cutely decorated inside and looks to be family run. All workers are friendly and attentive. I ordered the chipotle chicken sandwich and my boyfriend got the el despreciado sandwich. Both were DELICIOUS, well sized and came with a side salad. I had to take half of mine to go and I loved that they were filling, but not too heavy. The side salad was delicious and helped that light portion size compared to potatoes or chips. I will definitely be coming back to try some of their pastries and another sandwich!

My daughter and I were greeted very warmly, and immediately after being seated we were served complementary tiny cups of cafe de olla, which is really what attracted us to this tiny, but extremely charming cafe in the first place. My daughter had recently returned from a vacation in Cancun, so there was much to chat with the owner about the cuisine and beauty of that place. The cafe is decorated lovingly with many artifacts from different parts of Mexico and Central America, including paintings of Frida, ceramic parrots hanging from perches in the ceiling, to hand-crafted pottery. But the real star of the show was the food! My daughter loved her chicken Chipotle Sandwich, while I was more than happy with my El Despreciado sandwich -- both were served on very fresh rolls filled with quality ingredients that were prepared in-house, along with a tasty green salad. And of course, we both enjoyed huge mugs of the wonderful cafe de olla! It was an unforgettable experience that transported us from everyday life in Oakland to the vivid world South of the Border. Can't wait to return!

I love their chicken sandwich but also their Vietnamese coffee is really good and not too sweet . Definitely support this small business . The owner is so nice. You can come here to grab you a sandwich, a breakfast sandwich, a croissant, so coffee or some Mexican coffee which was delicious she so kind to give me a sample. You can order some Chia Fruit! My favorite thing here to order it the The Lox Bagel, with the salmon, capers, cream cheese, on an Everything Bagel! The customers service is amazing and the owner also voluntarily gave me a sample of the Chia with fruit and it was good.

I love coming here. The ambience is perfect for a work from home session. The food is delicious and the staff is super friendly. And love the overall vibe and decor. A little gem in East Oakland.

What a great find! This café is such a vibe--cozy, stylish, and welcoming. I had the Cobb salad and it was absolutely delicious--fresh ingredients and perfectly balanced flavors. The decor is charming and adds so much character to the space. I can't wait to come back with my daughter!

Breakfast Sandwich w/ sausage and cheddar.
    Meryllia C.

Food was ok, I got the breakfast sandwich w/ sausage and cheddar on sourdough. Customer service was great. No changing station in bathroom.

Loved that we got to stop by! It has ma and pa charm you don't find often anymore. The cultural decor, homey atmosphere, and service makes it feel warm and inviting, like stepping into someone's kitchen. The food was incredibly fresh, and you could genuinely tell how thoughtfully everything was prepared. The homemade dressings were spot on--full of flavor and adds the extra layer that sets this place apart.

The deli is a nice size with a couple of benches to sit and wait for your food. You can look at the menu and order, plus grab a drink or chips. They have a nice variety of items to grab that go well with your sandwich. The service was friendly and quick. Workers were all kind, and we love that it's dog-friendly! Regarding the sandwiches, you can get a hot or cold sandwich. You can also build your own! Companion got the Hot Boy, and I went the Build Your Own route. The sandwiches are hefty, with lots of great meats and fillings, and for the price, very decent! I wish my bread were a bit more toasted and crunchier, but that's my preference. It hit the spot, and I'd be open to trying their other sandwiches. I don't often go to delis, but Brothers Deli was a nice place to try. We enjoyed it by the waterfront, which makes it a great picnic option. Find them off Park Blvd., with street and residential parking around.

I have been eating delicious sandwiches from Modigliani Café since it opened. Always so delicious,…read moreand so friendly. But I have to wax poetic for a minute: today I ate the very best pastrami I have ever had. I grew up on the East Coast (as did the proprietor) and I have easily eaten 500 reuben sandwiches in my life (because they are pretty much the very best). This pastrami is absurd. It is thin. It is tender. It is flavorful. It is meaty but not stringy or fatty. It is moist. It is a love letter. It is a sweet whisper. It is goodness through and through. Made into a reuben, this pastrami is divine. I believe the proprietor makes his own thousand island dressing and it is just right. The bread has been pressed and grilled, and is neither tough nor soggy. You taste and feel the cheese, but it does not overwhelm. In short, I am in heaven. The proprietor of Modigliani Café grew up in a family that worked with meat, and he won an award when he was quite young for curing bacon (you can see the certificate on the wall in the shop). So my suspicion is that this pastrami is his creation. And I bet that bacon was the best ever. Pay Modigliani Café a visit. Everything I've ever ordered was delicious. Bring cash because they don't take cards.

A great chicken sandwich awaits you at Fowl + Fare in Alameda!…read more I finally had a chance to try this place! Fowl + Fare operates from a small storefront right next to the Shanvi Indian Grocery store on Santa Clara Ave (near Broadway). This place is either takeout or eat outside on picnic tables. I took my food to-go. I had the Citric Hot Chicken Sandwich w/ Seasoned Fries. I liked the Citric Hot Chicken Sandwich. It was spicy, but not numbing hot. The slaw sort of smoothed out the spicy heat. It's made from thigh meat, so it's moist and easy to eat. I didn't like the seasoned fries. They cut the potatoes into thin fries that don't travel well as takeout. Probably okay if you ate them right there, fresh from the kitchen. If I go back, I'm just getting a sandwich.....no fries.
