Recently visited this SF institution and was pretty underwhelmed. Pesto, Garlic, Sun Dried Tomato, Chicken, Onion, Garlic (No Tomato Sauce), Junior size $24.95 Maybe I should have gone w/a pasta dish, but was craving pizza. I chose this pizza because it had no tomato sauce. First let me say, it was not very hot when it arrived. I believe the sun dried tomato and garlic just "ran across" the pizza as it was barely visible and tasteless. The little bit of chicken was poorly distributed and it too was flavorless. The most unsettling part was the presence of Artichoke Heats, why, it's not part of the ingredients. Crust had no discerning flavor either. So disappointed in this place. Ordered some of my favorites for delivery and it was so bad. Chicken Parm: the delivery portion was about half the size of when you eat at the restaurant. Also, the cheese was burnt and there was NO MARINARA sauce on it. How can you have chicken parm with no sauce? The chicken was very dry. Garlic bread: super dry and tasteless. Felt like it was sitting out under a heat lamp all day because it wasn't fresh and it was chewy. Hard to eat. Sautéed spinach: was decent with enough lemon juice on it. But they oddly mixed in cooked spinach with raw spinach leaves. There are a million other better restaurants in SF. read more

One little disappointment was that I ordered the spaghetti with sausage instead of what they offered, with meatballs. To my surprise, my spaghetti came with almost a meat sauce but larger chucks of meat instead of a whole sausage, which I was REALLY looking forward to. But I was still content with my meal. One positive part about my dinner was the spaghetti came in either half portion or full portion. I ordered hand and it was the right amount of spaghetti I craved. You walk in and the decor is old school, you feel like you walked into your Grandma's house where nothing has changed in decades. The place is small and quaint so we were greeted and seated quickly. Our server came to our table right away and was very attentive. We ordered the All Meat Pizza, Ravioli and Salad to share for the table. The Sausage Factory is about as old school Italian as it gets and that is why it is a long time staple of the Castro. Come prepared to eat carbs, as the menu is pizza and pasta heavy. Everything is always good, the staff lovely, the pizza great... old school chicken parm rocks. 3.5 star for me actually The food at Sausage Factory is a bit of a mixed bag. The mussels were on the smaller side and the overall meal felt fairly average. That said, the pasta was quite good--definitely the highlight of the evening--and the garlic bread was decent, though nothing special. This is a wonderful mom and pop shop situated in a building that once housed a sausage factory, kind of makes for a more unique dining experience. How you start a meal is a good indication of how it is going to end, so if you start with a tasteless and soupy salad, chances are the entree will follow suit. I could seriously make a meal out of this. Chicken Parmigiana w/ Penne: The menu lists potatoes and veggies as the sides, but you can get pasta substituted. Which is exactly what I did since I wanted the full nona homecooked experience. The chicken cutlet was crispy and thick, with ample amounts of mozzarella on top. Generous amount of sauce on both the chicken and the al dente penne. Extremely filling and tasty. Lasagna: Generous amounts of sauce and mozzarella on top, which is so nice. I had such a great experience at this restaurant. Service was great and the food was amazing. My friends and I visited on the day of a huge parade and although the restaurant was busy, the servers were kind and our food was brought out promptly. This is a great place to go for a nice sit down meal, the interior is very cozy and lively, I honestly could have sat there for hours. As a group, we ordered pizza and two different pastas and they were all delicious. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. I ordered cannelloni and my friend ordered sausage and peppers pasta. Both were excellent! these folks are a bit of a sleeper. It's on Castro so it's a little hard to park but for food and for a great place to meet people there's a great back room.
