I highly recommend this restaurant. We went to Sugar Mill after a funeral and we were treated with the upmost respect. Our server Delia was a gem. She took care of our party of 30 without any issues. We were accommodated in the back to suit our needs. She knew exactly what we had ordered even when we forgot what some of us did order. Lol! Delia was attentive and caring with our elderly mother, which we appreciated very much. Now to the food...I ordered the fish and chips. I am very picky with fish because most restaurants make it really oily, however, the fish was perfect. Family members really enjoyed the avocado bacon burger, patty melt, pork chops and meatloaf just to name a few. When I return to Bakersfield I will be returning to eat there. I think I love this little restaurant because of the staff. The food is great, but the staff is stupendous. My last visit was on Super Bowl Sunday, and boy were they slammed. My friend told me about this place and as a first time customer, I was not disappointed. We were seated quickly and even though the place seemed busy, our waitress brought our drinks soon after seating us, and then took our food order. I got the grilled pork chop, baked potato, soup and veggies. My friend was going to order the Denver omelette, but when he heard my order, he decided to switch and get the same thing as me. First off - I've been coming here for over 30 years. Different owners and names I believe, but same location. I used to come here regularly, quicker and easier than cooking myself. About 10 years ago I saw a decline in the food. To the point I quit coming. Stayed away for over a year. Decided one day to give it a go again, still iffy food especially for dinner. Breakfast is ok, burgers not bad. But dinner - yuck. Veggies are boiled to mush, spicy flavor in the spaghetti sauce, salty gravy, if you get chicken fried anything you have to really look for the meat. Lettuce in salads is most often, brown and wilted. They have an array of desserts - mind you all frozen and freezer burned, except the "cobbler" which is only boxed cake mix dumped over canned peaches. Plus side is, the staff is friendly with a homey feel - the only thing is they need to quit calling everyone "Hun". read more

We normally get the Senior Country Fried Steak Dinner. There's so much food that we split it. And they don't charge for the extra plates. Tucked away in the corner of the Vons shopping center on North Chester Avenue, the Sugar Mill is your typical coffee shop. Hearty menu options of typical American fare. But what I go for is the Monte Cristo sandwich. Not a lot of places serve this menu gem, and the Sugar Mill has the best I've had, perhaps in my entire life. And it's HUGE!!! Three slices of French toast, lots of ham, lots of turkey, and lots of cheese, served with a side of cranberry sauce that really tips this sandwich over the edge of delectability. We are here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. I got the combo scramble, which had bacon, sausage, potatoes, cheese, eggs, and sausage. Everything was great, the biscuits and gravy that came with it were awesome. You could tell it was a homemade biscuit in the gravy have very good flavor. Walking in you notice it is a classic diner. Help up front was "how many" and "table or booth" server took a while to reach the table and get drinks going. But was polite. Ok the food, what really matters. I ordered the clubhouse. Which had fresh bacon which was a great. The bread was toasted perfect and the meat was tasty. To much lettuce though only complaint. Fries... Ok a little soggy. But the ranch was perfect made up for so do fries. My wife got tuna salad said it was good and my son got chicken strips and he was happy. I've had two completely different experiences. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, when I called in a to-go orders, it was 10 am on a Sunday and that is probably their busiest time. Anyways, I ordered for two and the individual who took my order was very rude when I asked to substitute an item. That's the only time I've had any sort of issue. When I sit in to dine, the waitresses are always sweet and quick to get you seated and have your drinks out. The food is delicious. There is a lot on the menu to choose from for breakfast and at a good price. The portion sizes are enormous. I always choose the biscuit and gravy as my side. The biscuits are huge and so good. Well surprise surprise surprise! This is a little Hidden Gem of a restaurant. It is in Oildale which I would have never have eaten at if i wasn't in the area for my sons practice.
