We were visiting from out of town and just happened to pick this "local" place and it was awesome! I had the cheeseburger (too big for me to finish) and my husband had the famous halibut sandwich. Both were absolutely great! The fish tasted fresh and was so big that it hung over the bun on both sides. The fries are fresh, home made and were absolutely delicious! Our server was very attentive and sweet. It's a small place but don't let that deter you, it is a good value meal for the price. I will eat there again next chance I get! :) read more

I signed up on Yelp just so I could write this review. Worst service ever. There were 7 of us there for breakfast. Light crowd so I'm not sure why the food took over an hour to be served and why the waitress only checked on us once. To top it all off the food was less than average, and cost was high. 1. This is the most unfriendly restaurant that I have ever been in. The waitress and cook spoke to the patrons that were (obviously local) sitting in the bar, but ignored my family almost completely. 2. Ridiculously mediocre food- I could have done better with a camp grill and one hand missing. I mean, floppy eggs, Hash browns that were yesterday's French fries, and coffee that tastes like it was brewed through a rusty metal sieve. 3. The charm in this place is obviously that it has been "serving locals since (god knows whatever year)", but I didn't actually think that meant that all non-local would be subject to sideways stares and the cold shoulder. I thought that meant that it was a legit place to dine. You win some, you lose some- the rating would be fairly higher if I hadn't been treated so poorly. 4. It isn't an Anchorage thing- we have had some of the most delicious eats here, but good golly some of the people are unfriendly here; to be honest, in this case, you are better off at Denny's. read more

Came here for the FIRST TIME WITH A FRIEND WHO COMES HERE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. Tiny little restaurant, very cool place. Seating is limited but, if you sit in the wrong seat they will redirect you as to where to sit. Owner makes all meals from scratch .He does not write down, but,remembers it all and gets it perfect. For 2 of us they gave us a huge stack of toast. The potatoes were the best i have ever had! Eggs were also perfect. I hear wonderful things about the fish i can't wait to try it the next time i am in beautiful Alaska. Breakfast ends at 10;55am. Lunch begins @ 11:00am Do not try to change the set up. This place does everything right. Service was great. We really enjoyed Halibut sandwich platter, salmon platter, blackened halibut Caesar salad and a burger. Nice rolls. Fish was fresh. Breaded items were not greasy. Panko breaded. Brownie sundae had a delicious fudge brownie and was enough to share. This was the perfect place to bring my family after landing at Anchorage airport. The White Spot has been our place for first and last day of school celebrations for 15 years now, and the big change in ownership only made it better...there's no more scolding with your meal! Yes, it's a burger joint, but if you share a halibut sandwich, fries and a milkshake with your child or even a friend, you will have eaten the best fast food Anchorage has to offer. A small cafe joint in downtown Anchorage. Surprisingly, doesnt get much pub amongst the tourists, but the locals know about this place. There are two large tables for groups of 4 and two or three more tables for groups of 2. Then there is the counter, that seats around 6-8. The place has a restroom in the back. The cook comes up to you and asks for your order. A waiter gives you drinks, your meal and the bill. The joint is low key and casual, albeit small. The staff is actually quite attentive and nice. I ordered the Halibut sandwich. Didnt particularly like the kraft like cheese inside, but the actual halibut was cooked just right - not too greasy with the right amount of breading cooked right. The fries were fine. My sister ordered the onion rings and they were done well. Very good value, fresh fish. I went here only once, but when i get back up to Anchorage, i'll drop by again to try some of their other items. read more

In fact, if you look at the photo I took of the grill, that was my halibut being cooked. The fish is fresh and has zero fishy smell or aftertaste. It was light and spiced to perfection. Sitting at the counter you meet all types of people and also get to know the friendly staff too. This was my 2nd visit in a week. Last time I came I had the grilled chicken Cobb salad which came in an Alaska-sized portion that was so big, I decided not to order anything else after it arrived. The fries I ate this time were also great. They are cut from fresh potatoes and dropped into the fryer with skins on. They are well done which is exactly how I like them. I can see why this place is a must-visit stop on the Anchorage food scene. If you come at lunch it will be busy. Be patient and your wait will be worth it. read more

This is a "no-frills" kind of place, which you can tell is mostly for locals. When my boyfriend and I first arrived at 11am, we were hoping to order breakfast but were told that they were only serving lunch. Fair enough I guess, but we were disappointed to miss out on pancakes and French toast! The food we did order (burgers and fries) was good, nothing too special but satisfied our hunger! The biggest downside of this place for us was the service. One of the waitresses was OK, but the other one seemed super unfriendly, no eye contact and just plonked our food down in front of us and walked away! Where do those high ratings come from? I was disappointed. There is no service, not even a greeting when I stepped into the almost empty cafe. After quite a while, I eventually got the attention and ordered my food. Again I had to call attention to refill coffee into the cracked mug. Halfway through the breakfast, the lady at the next table brought me the jam setting and asked me whether I would like to have jam for the bread. A dive that has been around forever. You watch the guy making your food as you order. It's very unadulterated and unpretentious. Took my coworkers there for halibut sandies and some burgers. Everyone was happy with their food, including me. The Halibut sandwich was made to order, fresh and tasty. It's what you order there. I got a veggie omelette, and it came with home fries and toast. Solid omelette! Everything else on the menu was pretty greasy meaty stuff. They were liberal with the coffee refills too. My husband and I have been here once and we loved it! It is extremely good and the people that work there are very friendly (which is rare in beautiful Alaska).
