I felt like eating dosa for dinner but my son said we'll eat at Tilak which was recommended by a co-worker whose parents are the owners. I was hesitant because I only eat dosas at one place in the city. No dosa on the menu so we ordered the usual Indian food. The naans were the best I've ever tasted. The butter chicken and bengan bharta tasted like home made. Outstanding! The lamb boti kebab appeared burnt but still delicious. I ordered the Rasmalai for dessert, it was so-so. The tableware served were of high quality unlike most of the places we frequent. I would definitely return here to dine. Great food and good recommendation.

Visited on a Wednesday night around 7pm with a friend, restaurant had a few other guests but plenty of open tables so was able to grab a spot right when we walked in. Drinks: Beer - Food: Butter Chicken - really good, rich creamy sauce with subtle tomato, and lots of spices we asked for the medium spice level and felt it was appropriate, chicken was tender and had a slight char, seemed to be mostly chicken thigh pieces Chicken Tikka Masala - also really good similar to the butter chicken but a little lighter and less buttery, seemed to have just pieces of chicken breast simmered in the sauce, chicken was also tender and well seasoned Okra Masala - okra, bell pepper stir fried together with lots of dried spices and chilis, some of the okra pieces seemed a bit fiberous and tough, flavor was really good but wished the veggies were a bit more tender Saffron Rice - generous portion size, rice was light fluffy and fragrant, great for soaking up the curry Garlic naan - solid, naan was brushed generously with garlic butter and had a slight char from the tandoori Service was okay, not the most attentive, went over our order with the server several times and they misheard so that's how we ended up with both Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka. Not a big deal you may just want to have them run back your order when you place it. Water was refilled through we also had a carafe on our table. Food came out after a 10-15min wait so pretty quick. Overall really enjoyed the food at Tilak, a solid spot for classic Indian curries, the butter chicken in particular was outstanding. Have also lived the saag paneer here as well but didn't grab it this time around.

Yum yum yum. This casual Indian restaurant is really top notch. Delicious curries, super flakey roti and friendly service. What else could you ask for? Definitely stop by the next time you need a little comfort food.

The saag paneer was so good! We ordered that along with the butter chicken and garlic naan. All dishes were flavorful and tons of seating inside this outer mission restaurant. We ordered mild which was still very good spiciness but I think I can opt for medium next time. The staff was also friendly!

We ordered takeout from this new Indian restaurant and scheduled pickup for 8:15 p.m. But they called us around 5 p.m. asking when we would pick up the order, which made us feel like the food had been ready way too early. The bread was wrapped in foil and ended up soggy by the time we got it - definitely not how I expected it to be served. The aloo tikki chaat bites were also disappointing. From the pictures, I expected something similar to medium sized crispy potato patties, served with different sauces on the side so I could dip and enjoy them separately. Instead, what we got were mini ball-shaped bites with the sauces already poured over them, which wasn't what I had in mind at all. The rest of the food was okay, but both the chicken tikka masala and the bread had a strong dairy flavor that I personally didn't enjoy. After this delivery experience, I honestly wouldn't want to try dining in either.

We had dinner at Tilak recently, and it was an adequate meal. We opted to order the Dahi Puri Chaat, Kadai Chicken, Lamb Vindaloo, and Bread Basket. While customer service was friendly and attentive, the overall meal was somewhat satisfactory. While the Dahi Puri Chaat was tasty, the yogurt was a bit heavy and the filling was underwhelming. In addition, both curries were okay on flavor, we had asked for 'hot' lamb vindaloo and 'medium' kadai chicken, and both seemed mild in spice level. I did enjoy the plain and garlic naan, but the meal was not very enjoyable or memorable. Perhaps their other dishes are more worth trying, but sadly, I did not enjoy our meal.

The dahi puri was amazing. Service was good, food came out quick. The bread basked was a good amount for 2 people. Saag paneer was different than I have ever experienced. Usually the spinach is shredded but in this dish it wasn't really. More of a home style taste and not as heavy on the cream so didn't feel bad after eating.

I came here with 3 other friends. We were particularly craving Indian cuisine, however, wanted to try a new establishment. We did some research and found that this particular restaurant had great reviews on multiple platforms. We decided to try several dishes as outlined below: Aloo Tikka Chaat: 3.5/5, we started off with these potato bites, however these fell short of my expectations. There were way too many flavors going on at once that I thought didn't quite compliment each other. I would skip on these and go for the samosas or some other appetizer. Don't forget to order the garlic naan! Butter chicken: 5/5, I loved both the tikka and butter chicken, however I definitely preferred the butter chicken more. We asked for medium spice level. The flavors were so creamy, rich and savory. I think the chicken was some part of the thigh, therefore had a good fat/lean protein ratio. It went so well with the garlic naan. If you can tolerate some spice, i'd recommend going up one level above medium. Chicken Tikka Masala: 4.5/5, it was quite creamery and aromatic, which complimented basmati rice and the garlic naan extremely well. I'm not too familiar with the culture and history behind Indian cuisine, but I noticed the chicken used in this dish was much more lean, resembling chicken breast. It had more of a chew and was a bit more dry. Still delicious with rich, savory, sweet tikka masala sauce. Lamb biriyani: 5/5, chose "hot" spice level for this dish and it was the perfect spice level. Lamb was tender marinated with a myriad of different spices. I typically don't mind the "gaminess" of certain proteins, but I didn't think it was gamey at all. Tandori chicken: 4/5, I thought this dish was quite dry. Again, likely breast over thigh. It had great flavor, but not as tender. Perhaps, try a different protein, or try another dish off the menu. The staff was incredible patient and courteous. She would come back every so often to check to see if we needed anything else and to refill our waters. Ambiance was fine, nothing to rave about. Plenty of street parking.

Went to get tacos but the place was closed, so on the way back to the car we decided to stop here -- the smells were quite alluring. The butter chicken did not disappoint. It was creamy and had great flavor with plenty of chicken and warming spices that went well with the garlicky naan. The saag paneer was more tomato based than a pure cream sauce, and had a nice base spice to it with good chunks of paneer.

A quiet local spot that has been recommended by multiple neighbors. We enjoyed all the dishes we had, but everything was a little sweeter than you would expect. We were seated immediately and service was as expected. It's definitely good in a pinch if you're craving Indian food and are nearby.

Amazing! Came here on a whim with my husband on a Monday night for dinner after we took classes in the city. We stumbled upon Tilak on our drive home, as a random find because by around 8:30pm lots of business start to prepare to close and Tilak was one of the restaurants that were open late ish. We weren't too hungry so we just ordered dishes to try and share! One is the potato appetizer which I believe its called the Aloo Tikka. We also ordered the paratha, vegetable biriyani and lamb curry. One thing that I have to mention is that Indian spice don't play, even with someone like me the medium level spice was quite spicy, so I would recommend mild if you want your food to be enjoyable. Besides the food being a bit more spicy than my preference, everything was seasoned nicely and the presentation on that appetizer also blew my husbands mind. Everything was also soooo affordable, with all of that ordered (on top of leftovers) we spent less than $50 for the 2 of us. Overall, would love to come back to this spot again and try other dishes!!

My bf identifies as Indian and this is his fav spot in SF. The spice is right (you can order spicy or extra) and service is tight. Portions are generous. Not very busy yet but it will be soon. Tikka, butter chicken and cauliflower dishes are great but anything you choose will be great. read more

Just had an order delivered for dinner. Lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, and butter chicken. The butter chicken was so creamy; and the lamb was tender and delicious. The naan was still hot when it got to my door. Absolute comfort food at its finest. The order initially came to my door without the chicken tikka masala. I called the restaurant and within 20 minutes they made it right with another delivery. They actually went above and beyond making it right. It is so refreshing to know there are still restaurants out there who really care about their guests. Did I mention the garlic naan? Soooooo gooood... read more

My new favorite Indian place to order from! Their naan is super good and not too dry, even after reheating in the oven the next day. I'm also a big fan of their tikka masala, tadka daal and samosas! There have been exceptions but they also typically deliver before the expected delivery time, which had pretty much never happened to me with any restaurant. We order from this place almost every week and I can only think of one time they were actually late, which the delivery guy apologized for. read more

Just tried this place yesterday . I got garlic nan with butter chicken. HELLLLA GOOD first time really trying Indian food. I always pass this place and decided to try it definitely recommend butter chicken I got it medium mild not too spicy just right! Looking forward to try more of the menu. read more

Excellent quality delivery Indian food. We ordered lamb korma--tender lamb in a sweet, well-spiced, rich sauce. In addition, we had the chicken tikka masala. The tikka masala had a dense sauce swimming with nigella seeds--it was great. The standard daal was tasty and perfect to sop up with the chewy, nicely charred naan. The delivery guy was friendly and courteous. We are SO ordering from here again. read more

It was not what I expected after reading reviews. Please note that this review is for appetizers only. Dahi Sev Poori: 2/5 there was minimal chutney and dahi was so thick that I felt I was having curd/yogurt. I know some of you might question that it's DAHI sev poori but I know food when it comes to North Indian. Paani poori: 1/5 absolutely no taste in 'paani' I would not recommend this place for Appetizers! read more

We went on Saturday for dinner. The food was good. Good portions too. We ordered vegetarian dishes. The naans were so soft. The Gobi Musalam was also very good. Only observation was they were short staffed so people were waiting a little bit to be seat as well as served. read more

Really good quality Indian food with fast take out service (usually within 20 min). Favorite dishes include Goan shrimp curry, tandoori chicken, baigan bharta and saag paneer. They use real fresh spinach instead of mushed frozen ones you usually get! Everything seems fresh, and aromatic. Good spice level as well. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but it seems spacious and cozy enough. read more

I'm giving Tilak 5 stars because this is the best Indian food I've ever had in a restaurant! In all fairness, I haven't been to many establishments for Indian food. We usually order it for delivery on Sunday evenings. But I wanted to get out and he wanted Indian so we ended up here. We had the deep fried dumplings, butter chicken and chicken saag with garlic naan. The dumpings were great! I forget what they're called, but they came with dipping sauces and were a wonderful way to start the meal. Butter Chicken was amazing. It was our favorite thing on the menu. Super creamy and flavorful. Chicken saag was too "healthy" for the bf. It wasn't that normal creamy, blended spinach sauce you normally get. It was sauteed whole leaf spinach instead. We liked it, but it was definitely different. The garlic naan was a more crispy version that we are used to. It wasn't that fluffy gooyness you usually get. I liked it, but it was a bit small and crisp for my taste. We came here at 7:30 on a Friday and there was no wait. We will be back...probably often! read more

This place cannot handle takeout. We ordered on Toast, which does not require you to create an account, so there's no way to cancel an order when the restaurant tells you it'll take an hour more than the estimated time when you arrive. So, you're stuck. We'll be disputing charges, because we have small children and can't wait an hour outdoors for our food. We like Tilak, but jeez. read more

Really good Indian food 1) Their chai is on point and cheaper than most places 2) They give you free papad 3) Their menu items include rice! FUCK YEAH. Service is a bit slow sometimes but they're food is good and prices are delicious. They also some legit Dhai Puri (though they use a different lentil that I would use) read more

Next time I'll go somewhere else. Not impressed with the food. Meat were so tough, both for lamb and chicken, it didn't taste fresh. Sauces were super sweet. We couldn't eat we had to throw them away. :( read more

Average Indian food. Small place. No ambiance. Had the fish pakora and Veg kebab for starters. Kebab are not kebabs but just roasted vegetables. Dal, saag and shrimp for main course. Nothing special on each of the dishes. Quick service. read more

My boyfriend and I visited Tilak on Friday night and my god, hands down the best Indian food I've had in SF. We ordered dahi puri, aloo tikki chaat, garlic naan and cauliflower mussalam, wine and beer. We didn't have a reservation, but we got our table pretty quickly. The people were very warm. What I really liked about the food, it was prepared freshly, especially the gravy for the curry, yummy! I'd definitely recommend this place to my friends! It's hidden, but definitely a gem :D! Ok! The search is over!!!!! By far the best Indian food I've had in the 20 years I've been searching here in San Francisco. I had take out!!!!! I was alone and rainy. I am searching for a soul food to emotional eat in front of my big screen tv. Ok, I'm a single mom and I never get these moments. I yelped and it's 5 minutes away. I figured it would be quick. It wasn't, it took exactly an hour. And....... it was piping hot!!!! First bite in the butter chicken, Oiy! Love at first bite, and I kept eating. Then I'm on my saag paneer, whoa!!! Hold back the Naan. Uh mazing. I'm dipping and dipping with my Naan. At this point I almost forgot I have this hollow, ball thing with crunchy and flowers. I'm kinda full at this point but hey, it's crunchy better get to it before it goes soggy. Nope! It's like the best thing that ever enters my mouth. With the 3 different sauces drizzle around it. Oh lord! It was till eye good!!! I still have the lamb Bahraini but I can't do it. I'm sure it's good!!! But let's end on a good note!! read more

This is the only place in San Francisco I'll go to for Indian food. Beware: once you eat at Tilak's, it'll ruin all other Indian restaurants for you. Tilak uses real ingredients, no food coloring. If you ever see red (dyed) butter chicken elsewhere, run away, and get the real deal at Tilak's. My go to favorites are: chaat, butter chicken, biryani. read more

Before I get into this review, I'll save you time and urge you to dine at this fantastic establishment-- Incredible food. I must say, I was not much of a fan of Indian food, but my dining experience at Tilak ensured that I am now. Flavorful dishes, speedy staff, and a welcoming atmosphere made the experience that much more memorable. Personally, I selected the Dahi Puri Chaat to start, which was a delightful savory dish that felt light, and was presented in a very elegant style. Fantastic opening, and felt excited for the Butter Chicken, which did not disappoint. I had the mild option as I'm not well-equipped to handle anything spicier than that, but I felt that there was still enough there where I could feel a slight tingle with the incredible sauce. The chicken was excellently prepared and combined with the Saffron rice, which made for an unforgettable culinary experience. The staff was lovely and attentive to my table, so my highest praise goes out to Chef Tilak for acquiring not only a mouth-watering menu but a warm and bubbly staff that made us feel truly at home. As a Biryani Connoisseur this spots ticks all the right boxes. Their Takeout Chicken Biryani is reasonably priced, well spiced, Meat is juicy and not just a oil tanker. Great dish overall. Good Job Tilak! We also got the Chicken Karahi and was okay. Not the greatest but will fill the tummy in a non reactive way. I'm glad I found this spot and will be coming back read more

This was delicious. Better than its predecessor. Flavors were reminiscent of Indian food in London. Butter chicken, daal tadka, and brown rice (w lots of glorious ghee) were phenomenal. Great flavors, thick luxurious textures. Best Indian I've had in a long while! PS: with Zantes and the Himalayan place on the same block, it's almost like a little South Asia in that hood. read more

This is my favorite Indian food in SF, and possibly my favorite food period in SF. Pro tip: order an extra bread basket and bring it home for leftovers. The naans go so well with cheesy scrambled eggs in the morning. Other favorites: the chaats are amazing and unique, butter chicken is fantastic, and I love the cauliflower. This is not a place with a bunch of dishes in the same sauce, each has its own blend of flavors. Bring lots of people so you can try it all!! read more

Came by a couple weeks ago to check out the change in ownership/name at this neighborhood Indian spot. The meal started off with a crispy, flavorful uttapam which was good. My husband and I then tried three dishes - a chicken curry dish, saag paneer and 2 kinds of naan. The chicken curry dish was really flavorful and unique (I think maybe it was called Chili Chicken) and the chicken pieces were super moist. The saag paneer was great - saag paneer is usually too oily for my taste, but this was super flavorful, yet not too oily and the right amount of slight hint of cream. The naan was super fluffy and fresh. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Really looking forward to coming back here to try the Biryani and Goan seafood curries next time. 2nd visit update: Got the Bengan Bharta, Butter Chicken and the small plate - chickpeas and fried fluffy bread (name?). All were amazing. Butter chicken is maybe the best I've ever had. He basically takes tandoori chicken thighs and then stews it in the sauce so the combo is super flavorful and juicy. read more

Want to waste money and rupture your ear drums?, then go here. The "Hot" and "Desi Hot" dish and spicy level is no where close to even as delicious as any authentic food. We ordered Daal Makhani and Gobhi Masallam and we were utterly disappointed. The spice level was fatal and even by Indian food standard, it was above the roof. The place doesn't have any ambience and hence no curtains or no cushion seats and the place was so NOISY that it wasn't worth enjoying with your family. I would better go to a pub or disc if the noise is this much read more

Tonight I did a takeout order of: Paneer Tikka Masala Saffron Rice Plain Naan Samosas I think that was some of the best paneer tikka masala I've had in SF so far. The potato veggie samosa and both green and tamarind chutneys were excellent too. Lovely meal, excited to try their other entrees next time. read more

Tilak's has a way of making you feel welcomed and taken care of, like sitting down to a home cooked meal at your parents' house. The food here is the real deal. So remember when the waitstaff asks you how spicy you want your biriyani, this ain't no white person spicy scale. read more

I'm a big fan. The saag paneer has real pieces of spinach and it's sad that i'm not used to that. It gives this a freshness that other places don't have. Everything I've had has been delicious. It's definitely my go to for Indian. read more

Quite possibly the most authentic Indian food I've tried here in SF. The various curries had distinct flavors unlike some other lesser joints where the dishes are blandly interchangeable. I live relatively far from the restaurant, but it's definitely worth tolerating a ride in the #14 Mission bus. read more

Tilak's decades long career has spanned a delectable saga across many countries. Tilak loved to cook as a teenager, and opened his first restaurant in his native Nepal before sojourning to work at an Indian restaurant in Korea. Chef Tilak then journeyed over to the States, where he honed his craft, capping his culinary journey off with stints at tech giants Apple and Dropbox. While at Dropbox, Tilak cooked for many celebrities including Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Condoleeza Rice, and Jon Ying. And today, he works to bring together everything he's learned in his worldly travels in order to serve you the best Indian food you've ever had.

Walking into the restaurant, it's a little unclear if you order the counter and they bring you food or if you're seated and you order at the table. We quickly figured out that your order at the counter and then grab one of the tables and they will bring you your order. I found the restaurant to be unkept, and most of the tables that did not have customers sitting at them were super dirty. The tables hadn't been cleaned from the previous customer/customers. We had already ordered and it was that quick mental conversation of are we expected to clean the table so that we can dine there or what. Thankfully, a bus boy appeared, and he didn't seem overly eager to want to clean the table that we were standing at but instead wanted to clean one that someone was dining at. It was kind of odd. He took a couple of swipes at the table and it really just removed the food that someone had dropped all over the table. Just not a comforting feeling when you know that you'll be dining in that same spot. Our food came out fairly quickly, and I was super excited to have a good meal. The CTM, I found the chicken to be very sparse in terms of the portion size, and the chicken was very rubbery. It was overcooked, and I specifically had asked for little to no spice. Apparently that request was ignored. The lentil and garbanzo beans were tasty, but the garbanzo beans were undercooked, incredibly hard, and the flavor profile was really weird. It couldn't decide if it was supposed to be spicy, spicy, and salty, or something in between. The rice was OK. It had far too much fenugreek in it, and again the flavor profile, even combined with the CTM just was a little offputting. The guy behind the counter was fairly friendly, but it wasn't that warm and inviting friendliness. Is this a place I would go back to? You probably have your little black book for Indian food in SF. Each spot has its specialty--place #1 has great naan, place #2 has great okra, place #3 has great chicken boti. And you just order from whichever place offers the thing you've got a hankering for that night. Cute. But what if I told you that there's a mythical Indian restaurant that absolutely crushes everything better than all of those other Indian restaurants? That you won't ever have to choose where to eat Indian food ever again? Or that there's a restaurant out there that will make you immediately abandon that diet you've been so admirably struggling to maintain? Tilak's food is the real deal. You know how Shaolin monks train from childhood so they can be cold-blooded killers? Tilak's kind of like that, but for Indian food. His entire life has been in pursuit of creating great tastes, and now the world's so fortunate to revel in his talents. Every dish is thoughtfully crafted with the perfect amount of spice, and plated in extravagant ways that will make you feel like the most spoiled maharaja east of the Ganges. You also can't miss the chaats (nearly impossible to find anywhere else in this city), nor the chole bathura. Every meal here will make you marvel at just how elastic your stomach can truly be. On top of that, Tilak (the owner and head chef) is just a great guy. He gives a shit about his food, and that you're enjoying it. You can tell how much he cares about offering the best product possible, and it shows with every single dish that reaches your table. If there's any downside, it's that Tilak isn't open 24 hours a day. But maybe it's for the better -- new pants are expensive. read more

We had been disappointed in a restaurant where we planned to eat and were walking in search of good food when we came across Tilak. The staff is extremely helpful, especially since we are both gluten intolerant. The Indian Food was excellent and on our second visit the server recommended something that wasn't even on the menu. The chef recognized that one of the orders had been made a few days earlier with the same requests and he came out to meet us. It's a small restaurant but well worth a visit. It will be at the top of our list on our next visit to CA. read more

it is the best taste and flavor of Indian food I ever had in the area. My wife had the similar experience. The butter chicken I had was so rich, the lamb biryani had great flavor and tendered meat, the samosa and sish kebab were so good. we brought half of the food home - gerenerous portion. its a great finding in the neighborhood. i cannot wait to go back and try their new stuff. read more

Absolutely one of the best Indian restaurants in SF, Tilak knows his food and the flavors are so traditional and you can taste the quality in his food, my favorite dishes are Butter Chicken, Salmon Tandoori, Garlic Naan But honestly if you love indian food, everything here is amazing!!!! read more
