Found this place in a "Top 5" and was number 1; however, like most times the owner gets a heads up when a critic is in or on their way to their establishment. Two hostesses reminded me of children in a sweatshop. Miserable. Possibly reeling from heat exhaustion or maybe nursing a hangover. When the maitre'd or manager came over I knew why. Seemed very cold. "Too important to acknowledge a patron in the middle of conversing with the hostess." The guy gives an air about him as if he is in charge of the Waldorf and doesn't have time to "deal" with anything, but it this isn't the Waldorf and you don't appear to have the ability to resolve any issue here. I feel like in his head he us keeps repeating, "You're in charge. You're in charge. You must demand respect from them!" Forgot to mention, which is huge. You must hit up the place via Yelp or possibly another mobile app to be seated in a timely fashion. Went there and waited over 30 minutes to be seated. Got seated and immediately knew what was probably holding this place back. Fiscal responsibility. I looked around and it wasn't so much that there wasn't enough seating, but I guess staff. There were multiple tables open which stayed that way for the duration of our visit. You might say, "Well maybe staff called out being it was 4th of July weekend." I'd give you that, but there was no AC either. No AC in the summer! You pay pretty crazy rent I imagine, charge prices that accommodate that rent, so on and so forth. Get an HVAC guy there the same day and fix it. Don't own it? Then I hope you are presently involved in a lawsuit with the owner. No spoon. You wrap a fork and knife in a napkin and leave out the spoon, but serve coffee with all the fix-ins I stir in with a......fork? One POC. Take a wild guess at what his job was. That's right you guessed it busboy. Majority all white teenage female wait staff. You get this feeling that establishments in Asbury, not just this one, want to push out POC or at the very least centralize them to an area across the railroad tracks. My fiance asked for two things. Gazpacho and an everything bagel all the way. First, no gazpacho. Ok? Seriously? Pretty simple thing to make. And bagel came out plain not everything. Which is indicative of this place if you read through the other reviews. Be prepared to either deal with what you got or return it correcting the staff. Today was my first visit to Toast; it's the Monday before Memorial Day, and we arrived at 10:30 and were able to be immediately seated outside. There are about 5 2-top tables that line the windows, and we took the table on the end farthest from the entrance. First, the service, which was... quirky. We weren't seated too long before our server came out, but when he did, he apologized for making us wait and said no one told him he had a table outside. He took our drink order for 2 Virgin Bloody Marys (which is on the menu), but came back just with the waters saying they don't have the Bloody Marys on Mondays because they only make the mix on certain days (odd). He then took our food order and everything came out within a decent amount of time. Although he checked in with us about 1-2 minutes after we received our food, we didn't see him again until he came to drop the check off towards the end of us finishing our meals (which was annoying because we needed drink refills). Immediately after laying the check down, he picked it back up to check to see if the Bloody Marys had been removed, which they had not. So he took it back and didn't return with the new check for almost 10 minutes. The table next to us also had to ask us for some sugar because they had asked him 3 times for some, which he never brought. I say "quirky" to describe not just the service but his personality; he just wasn't on point or attentive. The food was pretty good. My friend had the Spring Roll Scramble, which she enjoyed. It was nice to see something with "mostly egg whites with one whole egg mixed in;" we both like our eggs like this so it was just a pleasant surprise to see! I had a triple berry pancake special (see photo). The pancakes were on the lighter side, but good. I added a side of bacon and egg whites with them. I think the egg whites were $5+, which is a bit much. The total bill came to $32 for the two of us. A bit much, but not too crazy. The bathroom was decently clean; no toilet seat covers though :) Overall, a good breakfast spot in the area; I'd go back to try other things! I can't believe it took my fam all this time to try this place, and at Asbury too.?! I guess because I always associate(d) breakfast outside with sausage, eggs, and waffles... (and brunch all pricey a la organic but non-organic salads and "fresh" farmed fish)--which practically everyone and their mother diner offer, which renders them kinda divey (inc. their coffees) regardless how much attempt they make at fancy, using tricks that feature powders from sugar fairies and whipped cream. No thanks, I'd rather have breakfast at home where I can control both the fluff factor and oil I use, and turn back brunch to a real lunch somewhere good). But this restaurant surprised us. Or we were just really happy that day. It's like having an overdue brunch with an estranged relative you kinda knew existed but had never met in person, and the meeting actually turns out pleasant, somewhat. Let's start with the men's orders. No, I didn't hog their food (I'm no pig, though it may seem that way sometimes); they kindly gave me a taste of their Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich on whole grain bread and Homemade Veggie Burger, both platters accompanied by sweet potato fries. All I can say about the whole episode is YUM--especially the gourmet grilled cheese on whole grain bread, the homemade veg patty, and the sweet potato fries. We got there just before the kitchen closed at 3p this Memorial Day weekend, and I didn't know what to order (the guy beside me beat me to the veggie, and I have this sickness sometimes where when that happens I have to order something totally diff, only to end up choosing the most minimal route, as in not ordering anything at all when pinched for time). But not ordering anything was no option: I was hungry. So I scanned...and scanned...and saw the simplest thing on the menu. I'm not a waffle person and don't eat meat, and already consume organic salad at home, but wasn't feeling the fish at the moment. Of course eggs prepared by others made sense! It comes with potatoes and toast, except I craved biscuit... So my huge, plump biscuit arrives sporting dark, short hair on it, looking like it just landed there in transit... (Maybe it fell and got placed back on the plate?? They were closing the kitchen...--oh god no, someone tell me my mind's gone over.) But our server was quick to take it back (so I didn't panic nor got a chance to take a snapshot) and replaced it with another huge biscuit, and hairless this time. The paper menu has no photos of its food and drinks, but the website gallery is tempting enough (though the images aren't labeled) that I ended up salivating over the nice, cold drink (I was hoping coffee) in a mason jar. And what I got was a nice, cold drink (mocha, I was told when I showed the picture on my phone) in a mason jar, sans the fairy whip. Our waiter forgot our napkins the first time we asked (you know, napkins are vital for greasy fingers, unless you don't mind using your skirt/shirt or the one napkin you've been using the whole time and which your utensils came in), and my home potatoes were nothing more than flavorless and shriveled. But despite all the minor inconveniences, I'd consider coming here again. It was a decent first "toast"... Which when that happens, you end up looking forward to more good times. Only without any stray hair (we like the hair to stay put on our/your heads as much as possible and not migrate anywhere else as we toast). Toast is quite a popular restaurant & can get very busy. On a beautiful, sunny day recently my daughter & I decided to have an outdoor lunch Our waiter was very prompt & very personable. My daughter ordered a special grilled cheese sandwich which came on multi grain bread with 3 different cheeses, sauteed onions & mushrooms. She opted for a side salad with it. I went with the chicken avocado BLT on the same multi grain bread. Mine came with some of the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. I tasted my daughter's sandwich & thought it was absolutely delicious! Not your every day grilled cheese sandwich for sure. My sandwich was tasty, however the chicken seemed dried out (overcooked) & the bread, a bit hard (perhaps the end of the loaf piece). Inside are more tables & a small counter area. The staff all seemed friendly. After lunch we walked inside to note a little, backyard patio area. I may have to try that next time. I would give Toast a 3.5 for this meal if I could but am rounding up because the food did taste good & the waiter & staff were wonderful. Very busy breakfast place, especially on weekends. We waited 25 mins for a table on a Sunday. The coffee is very good. The food was pretty good for the most part, although there were a few quality control issues. I ordered Eggs Benedict - which from the menu appears to be one of their specialties (they have 4 benny options). However, one yolk was runny as it should be, and the other was hard boiled?? (See pic). The waiter was a little too laid back for us. Didn't really answer the questions we had on the menu, but rather just said "yeah, I'm sure we can do that." I've heard great things about Toast and have wanted to try for so long! The first time I came here was on a Sunday around 8am, but the wait was over an hour, so we decided not to wait. We came back yesterday, 6/9 around 8am as well and there was no wait time at all! Toast is BYOB, so I was able to enjoy some mimosas with my breakfast! Our server was very friendly, no complaints here. Their portion sizes are huge! I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a biscuit and a single chocolate chip pancake and I could barely finish either. My sandwich could barely stand on it's own, I had to take some eggs and bacon off in order to eat it, but again, no complaints here! The single pancake I had was more than enough. Even if I went with a short stack, I don't think I would be able to finish it. My husband ordered disco fries with an egg on top and he loved it! He also ordered a chocolate chip waffle which had amazing flavor, but was too soft for my taste (I prefer my waffles on the crunchy side). Overall, I definitely recommend this place! Let's just say "I'm a diner kind of gal". Toast is a fine option for breakfast in Asbury Park. But they have a bit more potential to be a great option for breakfast on Asbury Park. First off, it's a bit pricey for the quality of the food. It's one of those "no substitutes" kind of place. Want fruit instead of hash browns, a $1 there. Egg whites, $2 here. The other issue is that I've never been to a breakfast place that doesn't have a meat option with eggs. Rather it's $3.50 for a side of bacon which is a whopping 3 slices. Second off, the waiter was really nice. However, it was slow and they don't give you water unless you ask which is frustrating when flagging down a waiter is difficult. Aside from the price for the quality, Toast is pretty good. It has a nice look to it and I am a sucker for mason jar cups, which they have!! Would I come here again? Maybe if I wasn't paying. But $15 for an egg white "scrambler" with a salad instead of toast or hash browns is not so worthwhile in my book. read more
