I had the best experience and food here! First off I have to call out the above and beyond kindness and friendliness the staff/possible owners! Super sweet and helpful folks who were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed and were comfortable. I think it's been about a month of this restaurant being under new management, and while I can't compare it to the old management, I think the new folks are doing a great job. I'm not usually a big soup person, but the spicy noodle soup I had upon my friend's recommendation was truly delicious! So much flavor, and I'm actually a big fan of the vegan meat they used, and I'm very hard to please in that department. The portion size was also quite generous in my opinion! Some things to note, parking is not very easy here, your best/cheapest option is managing to secure street parking along the road, directly across the street is 2 hour parking that becomes free after 6 pm. However, do note that this place closes a bit earlier than you might expect, at 6 pm. Another thing to note is that it would be difficult to bring a group of more than 4 people here as it's very limited seating and a bit of a tight squeeze. My group of four had to sit outside and drag the two tables together, which wasn't a big hassle, but might not have worked out so well had one of the outdoor tables been taken. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more delicious Vietnamese vegan food!

Ordered a House Special Chowmein. The noodles were well cooked, and the imitation beef that came with it is quite good. It tastes more like something tofu-based then a good substitution for beef. The service was good, and the ambiance is a takeout place

This location has reopened after a period of closure. It is now under new management, and Uncle Ben is no longer there following his retirement. The interior remains largely the same, but the menu has changed quite a bit. I definitely miss some of his signature dishes.

I've frequented this place since college so I guess definitely over 10 years (jeez am I getting that old).. but how have I not written a review??! Better late than never I suppose This place sells vegan , not even vegetarian, Vietnamese food Please don't let the exterior or small slightly run down interior, parking, or the "small" selection in the glass case scare you.. the food is totally homey and the flavor palette hits just right, this is what a Vietnamese vegan/veg family would make at home. A lot of people like to order their noodle dish, but I always get one of their combo rice plates because it reminds me of home and always hits the spot. Note if you eat the rice dish in house, they will microwave it for you, since it's been in the glass case, I understand how this may turn you off but pretend your eating at grandmas house! It's seriously smallllll with a couple 2 seater tables outside and maybe 3 on the inside, when I "dine in" I'll opt for outside if I can cause it does start to feel a little cramped inside. I do wish they were at a bigger more convenient location ... but hey, I guess don't fix what ain't broke. The owners are always so kind and friendly. They use to be cash only but when I just visited they now accept credit cards ($20 min). I'm not sure if they even remember this because I'm sure they do this often for many people since they are so sweet, back when I was a broke college student (now I'm just broke), I was short on cash and the owner gave me my meal and just told me to come back to pay another day when I had enough money :( ... wahhhh I was so appreciative and that made a lifelong customer out of me. Anyway, please give this place a try, the food is so so so good, once you get over everything else . If you're unsure what to get, literally just close your eyes to point and choose, everything will be yummy lol. Support local :)

The owners here are super friendly and welcoming. I ordered the vegetarian pho after a flight back home and was craving pho. The broth was very flavorful and rich. It also had a bunch of toppings such as tofu and imitation pork and beef. It is a casual area with seating outside and inside. The only thing is I wish they had labels for all the items they had but the staff members are very helpful with telling you what everything is. For vegetarians and vegans this place is definitely somewhere to eat.

Was looking for a vegan friendly place for a friend visiting. It's a small hole in the wall Mom and Pops kind of place. The service was nice. It was our first time. But we both quite liked it. We ordered the Bun Bo Hue Noodles. It had a good flavor that was deep. Everything inside was pretty yummy. If you like a comforting savory soup, this is for you! Cheap, fast, easy, super-plentiful portions, close to SJSU (if you're a student or visiting), and probably relatively healthy as far as foods go. I was in the area and so I visted. Very friendly service and the operator tried to explain every single dish to me that I ordered in my combo special just to make sure that I was getting what I wanted. This was very educational because I am not really that well-informed about this cuisine. Not exactly necessary for me because I was pretty assured that I would like everything on the menu even if I didn't know what it was, but potentially very helpful for picky eaters. The food is vegan but I largely didn't notice, except for one dish - which I honestly thought was /better/ than the original meat version. I had a three item combo with the following: 1. Vietnamese Chow Mein. I am not sure what this is called in Vietnamese, but it tasted a lot healthier than the Chinese version, which I think was good because the lack of extremely heavy oils and what not allowed the natural flavors of the vegetables and herbs to come out better. They gave me a lot of this. 2. Curry Potato. I liked it well enough. The curry was not particularly overwhelming - it didn't really need a staple dish to pair with it. Just the curry and potato and vegetables by themselves made a good dish. Nice! 3. Braised Tofu Eggplant. At least I think it was braised. Very flavorful. Came with these nice little Chinese-style peppers that added a kick. The tofu was unusually NOT bland - the sauce on it did the perfect trick. Eggplant soaked up the sauce as eggplant often does and made a good pairing with the chow mein. 4. Chicken drumstick. I'm not sure if this was something I paid for or not or just something extra they gave me. It was pretty good. Like really good. I don't know what they did with it, but it seems herbs/spices were interlaced into the not-meat. This actually made it significantly better than most chicken, which I'm going to be honest is often just kind of bland. All of this ran me $14 combined (tax/tip/etc.) Good deal! Cheaper than the fast food Asian food boxes you get at even most grocery stores these a days! Only downside is that it's kind of hard to find parking around the area. It's like within walking distance of SJSU, which kind of inherently makes parking challenging... I have heard GREAT things about the bon bo hue, so that will be what I try next!

My friend likes to come here a lot for lunch, and one day we decided to come here together. There's very limited seating, but luckily there were about two or three tables outside that we were able to eat outside. The people running it were very friendly (though I am unsure if this was because of my friend being a recurring customer or not), and I got the yellow noodle soup with teriyaki kebabs to share. I should note that I am not vegan, but the fake meat was very tasty and had a nice texture to it. However, the serving and the kebab was a lot more than I had expected and I ended up having a slight stomachache after. I think this is probably the type of place that would be good for getting to-go, as you can save the food for a later time if you can't finish it all in one setting. Overall, it was a nice place with tasty food and friendly service at an affordable price. I would recommend going here, vegan or not, if you are ever in the area.

THE BEST VEGAN SPICY NOODLE SOUP! I was lucky enough to be staying with a friend who lives nearby here, and when I discovered this place on Yelp I knew I had to try. The spicy noodle soup was stuffed with a variety of fake meats, all of which were incredible, and my favorite of which was the ham. I've had a lot of fake meats in my life and this was definitely some of the best. The spicy broth was so flavorful and it also came with a bag of toppings and some vegetables which were a great addition. The noodles were $13 cash which I thought was great value. Portion size is perfect for one meal. The guy who runs the store was really friendly and honestly just by looking at him you can telll he's really really nice. I would love to come back to try the other menu items and the deli options. There were also some steamed buns and skewers that looked delicious. I would travel back to San Jose just to eat here again. Absolutely incredible.

This is probably one of the only places I would drive 1+ hours to San Jose for. It's a very small place with basically no place to sit being run by the sweetest older gentleman. This is more likely a to-go kind of place even though they have a few tables for you to eat at. Everything is vegetarian which is always amazing and everything is delicious!! I don't even know what was on that combo plate, but I loved every bite of it. If anyone asks me for recs for the South Bay, this is the spot I always give.

The gentleman in the front is friendly and smiles. Fried fish stick was so similar to fried tilapia. Salad was sweet, sour, and spicy. This vegan place is definitely a go for both vegans and non-vegans

Tofoo Com Chay is ONE of the BEST Vegetarian Restaurants. All foods that we tried are delicious and tasty. The place is a relatively small, but you can order to go. We always enjoy eating at this place or ordering to go. The price is very reasonable on all items. read more

As a vegan, this place blew my mind. I took a jewish friend who tried the vegan 'pork' and he couldn't believe how incredibly realistic it tasted and that he would never be able to tell the difference. This place tastes like food from a next evolution of human culture that doesn't require the environmental and ethical burden of eating animal carcass bits. I will be coming back regularly to this new favorite place in San Jose. read more

I recommend this diner for any vegetarian who wants to try vegetarian meat. I particularily liked the chicken and the curry drumsticks. The price is 5.00 for a three item combo and only 6.00 if you want to add another item. The service is friendly. read more

I have never tried a vegan food place but to my surprise it pretty good. I walked in and didnt know what anything was so i just order a fried rice 2 item combo (I am still trying to figure out what i was eating). The prices were acceptable for a good portion of food. when i began eating it I didnt know what to expect because it looked like meat. As i bit in the texture of the food was different soft and chewy nothing like meat were you have chomp down and tear. The seating here is horrible everyone is crammed together, really no room to walk. Also the parking is not very great. Overall it was pretty good but i probably wont come back and eat here. read more

this place almost made me a vegan. i freaking love this place so much. ben, the owner calls everyone by name and remembers everyone's orders. he called me jenn and i have no clue how the hell he knew what my name is. i sometimes stop in 5 times a week for a large chinese "chicken" salad and a corn pudding, if it's available. ben's so great that if i tell him when i'm coming in the next day, he'll save a corn pudding until i come in. every once in a while i'll try something new. the banana pudding's pretty good too, although i get annoyed with all the extra stuff thrown in. you know... all the "good for me" stuff. and the vegan flan is pretty kickass too. the pho tastes spot on, but i don't get it with the fake meat. the broth and noodles with veggies are awesome enough on their own. i dig the braised bean curd and the egg rolls. their food in general is pretty delicious. don't expect it to taste exactly like what it's replacing. the drumsticks don't taste exactly like chicken and the meatballs don't taste exactly like beef. but they're still tasty, and i'd still order them. read more

Maybe the best and definitely one of the most unusual Asian take-out places in the South Bay, and if I'm not mistaken a sister restaurant to Vegetarian House down the street. They're both run by the same religious group I believe, who want to convert the world to veganism?... Okay, why not, haha. The food on offer is mostly Vietnamese takeout and pho, but all the meat dishes are replicated using vegan ingredients. It's done very well too: many of the replicas taste like meat, and those that don't are delicious anyway. The vegan gravy is to die for. And definitely check out the vegan chicken legs: lemongrass shoot for the bone, rice flour for the skin, and shredded seitan for the meat (as far as I can tell). Never seen that done before. As a bonus, on Thanksgiving they offer a full vegan turkey, made in the same style. The food is good enough that I'd recommend people making the trip from out of the area just to eat here. read more

I moved to SoCal last year, and I'm still missing Ben and his restaurant. I went here about once a week while at SJSU, spent a lot of cold nights eating spicy pho, and gladly gave every dollar I could to support this restaurant because Ben is not only a great cook, but a fabulous man-workaholic, kind, generous, and always smiling. Anyone who says anything negative about this place needs to shut up because this is a great restaurant with great food at a fabulous price. All the trash like "cash only" and "flavorless..." Don't post on Yelp because it hurts Ben's well deserved (should be) 5 star rating and citywide praise. All negative comments for this restaurant are not deserved . All negative comments are reserved for people who lost their tastebuds from childhood food abuse and people who just like to complain for the yelpattention. IF U READ THESE...I MISS YOU TOFOO COM CHAY. If I go up north again, I will make a special trip :) read more

ok... i really hate to write a bad review for anyone, especially any yelp business close to a perfect 5 stars but i had to make a yelp account just to give my two cents about this place. it seems like everyones reviews were raving about this place so my friend and i wanted to go to try it out. long story short we both suffered food poisoning.. it sounds silly because i must be the only 1star review for this place but shortly after our meal i started having a stomach aches.. followed by a bad visit to the bathroom.. then feeling sick the next day and i'm still recovering. at first i wasnt sure if it was because of this place or not because my friend didnt get it as fast as me but by the next day she was feeling all of the same symptoms. i'm sorry to all people that love this place but it gave me food poisoning... also didnt like how they had to microwave our food. our visit was probably bad luck because everyone else loves this place, but yelpers beware. read more

My family and I have gone here for years. It is surely my favorite! They have the best chicken patties. We usually buy the sourdough bread separately and then the chicken patties. Sometimes, we order the sandwiches at the restaurant, but I usually like to make them myself so they don't get soggy. If you are going to eat them right then and there, then I suggest ordering the sandwich. However, if you go home and eat, then order the chicken patties separately. I don't know the name of this item, but they are these tofu balls or circles on a stick. They are the best. I always order them when I go there. Besides those items, I LOVE the Pho Noodle Soup. Just recently we bought it to go and they packed it nicely. When I came home, I was delighted to enjoy a light yet healthy meal. I surely recommend this to anyone that wants some healthy and delicious food! No vegetarians should miss this place!! read more

I ordered the teriyaki tofu wrap which was my lunch and dinner. The wrap was made with whole wheat tortilla that housed a variety of leafy greens, carrots, bean sprouts, tofu marinated in teriyaki sauce, and drizzles of a tangy, white sauce. The food was very filling and tasty with a side of peanut sauce. I was surprised when I saw the wrap in the packaging because it was larger than I expected. Talk about a bang for $3.75! Aside from the dish, the tiny to-go type of restaurant seems clean. One of the workers was eating his lunch while cleaning the marble top tables. The service was not customer focused which is far from the treatment you would get at a big chain American restaurant if you were the only person who was lined up to order. When I did get my food, the cashier did not bother giving me a receipt or saying thank you. Overall, the healthy foods on the menu look appetizing and sold at a reasonable price. read more

I think the one surprising disappoint for me were the garlic noodles. I expected more of a kick and generally more flavor from the noodles, but they ended up being relatively mild. Don't get me wrong, we still ate it all, but I just expected more umph. All in all, I enjoyed the food & would love to order from here again!

This single meal was definitely more than enough for two! The Banh Mi Cari De (goat curry) was unfortunately quite the opposite. The goat was cooked very well - tough, gamy, and difficult to eat. There were probably six pieces in total, our first was tender, our second had bone, a little harder to chew, and the last was best compared to rubber. The curry was a bit watery, which made the banh mi soggy when dipped in. This was probably an adventurous try, but not a dish I'd ever consider ordering again.

The interior is crammed with tables; the atmosphere feels busy and warm. There is a single room women's bathroom and men's bathroom in the back as well. The decor leans toward being classic more than trendy, which I liked. The menu is pretty big, offering a variety of items ranging from mainstream Vietnamese options to ones I don't encounter as often. I recommend eating family-style for many of these dishes, including the Bún Chả Cá Lã Vọng, which I enjoyed with my partner. The prices are pretty average, and their portions are generous. That said, they are cash or Zelle only. There is an ATM that you can use if you forget to bring cash, but this is still something to keep in mind. Overall, I can definitely see myself coming back. I wish I had the stomach capacity to try more of their dishes at once, and I 100% recommend that anyone give this place a shot.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I came in but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by both the service and the food, everything came out tasting fresh and had a really good balance of flavors without being too strong or trying too hard, it's always a plus when the people working there seem like they actually want you to have a good time and aren't just going through the motions, I liked that they were quick to help without making it feel rushed, and even when I had a question about something they took the time to explain it in a kind and clear way, the space itself was clean and had a cozy kind of feel without being too loud or overdone, and the food had that homemade kind of warmth that's hard to find in a lot of spots, the texture on everything was spot on and nothing felt too oily or bland, I also noticed they were good at checking in at the right times not too much or too little which made the whole meal go by smoother, overall I'd say it's the kind of place where both the food and the service leave a good impression. read more

For my meal, I ordered the lemon grass curry tofu, stuffed chili, braised bean curd over brown rice. The taste was amazing and the brown rice was perfect for it. Tofu is soft and juicy combine with lemon grass. Stuffed chili is so spicy (I like spicy food), braised bean curd is very delicious. The food was excellent, healthy. It is complete all soy protein. Why five stars? Three simple reasons: 1. Really tasty fake meat stuff (roti "chicken" drumsticks, lemongrass curry tofu that I saw the lady making right there in front of me, and lots more) 2. Incredibly, scarily, and happily CHEAP. You can eat more cheaply here than at the grocery store--Safeway, not Whole Foods. Eats range from $2.50 to (gasp) $6 (that one's an outlier, though). 3. The people who run it and own it are the nicest, cutest, smiliest people I've ever seen behind a counter. There's a 5'3" waiter with a funky high pitched laugh who walks with an irrepressible spring in his step. He's the only waiter.... I actually visited Tofoo Com Chay because of Yelp reviews, and here I am adding to the pile. I have nothing original to add, but eating here was such a pleasant experience--made me think that maybe there is goodness in the world after all--that I just had to put in my repetitive two cents. read more

I think this place has great reviews because: 1. It's vegan 2. It's cheap But this is not a good restaurant. The food here does not taste good. My family came here really wanting to try this place because my dad is vegetarian and our favorite Vietnamese place in San Jose closed down several years ago (shout out to White Lotus lovers out there!) Okay - i love veggies, I love tofu, but I think fake meat is pretty awful. My parents didn't enjoy their food very much but their combo meals were much better than me and my brother's. If you like tofu then this place may be your cup of tea but for those vegetarians who don't like the tasteless sponge you should probably look elsewhere. The original vegetarians (Indians like myself) don't traditionally eat Tofu and this is really only decent if you think Tofu tastes like chicken and beef (which it doesn't as a former meat eater). Anyways, there are some nice drinks here so I can't give it one or two stars and the service was quite good despite what some other yelpers have claimed here. Having eaten here dozens of times, I can definitely recommend this place for great, vegan fast food. They offer a variety of hot dishes and chilled meat substitutes at a very reasonable price. They have a few options in their bar section but all decent. If you're sensitive to salt, spices or a lot of flavor, go with the a la carte options. The place is always busy for take-away and dining in, and has a few, simple tables inside and outside. My favorites are the spicy noodle soup and traditional pho. read more

They make some delicious veggie dishes; some of my favorites include sesame veggie chicken, house chowmein, and the tofu rolls. Most of the food is around $6.00-8.00 and you get a decent portion on your plate too. Not much in terms of seating here and it's not a great place for large groups. The first time I went there, I ordered the rice combo. It was ok. My sister, on the other hand, ordered #13 spicy noodle soup. It was really good! All the "meat" look like meat, but I think they are made of tofu. The broth is fresh. I don't think there's MSG in there because I didn't get thirsty after eating it. They usually have a variety of packaged food items next to the register for add-ons. Smart! Only complaints are that it's cash only and not open Sundays. I suppose I'll live.
