So I've been coming to this location since we moved to Surprise AZ in September 2020. It's one of our go to places. Food is fresh. My girlfriend is vegan and gluten-free. We both can eat here and enjoy our different dietary wants. Critical eye- In late 2020, Nov/Dec. I don't know if it was COVID related, but the product and service was both lacking. My order was never correct. It was very disappointing. At that time I was a frequent visitor, 10 times a month. Fast forward to 2021, slowly getting better each visit.......August 2021 and current. Everything is now perfect. Product is ALWAYS on point. Order is ALWAYS as correct. It's night and day from a year ago. I now frequent 15-20 times a month. Have my usual. It's fresh. Healthy. Tasty. Tokyo Joe's is a fusion of all sorts of Asian food. I'll admit that the first time my coworkers and I came in for our lunch break, looking at the menu was entirely daunting. The variety of choices is across several columns and you can personalize everything that you want to a "T" that it's almost too much. Unless you look at the menu beforehand, many customers are left wondering not only what to order but how to order, so I recommend if you have a chance before you go in, read the menu so you have an idea of what you're getting into. My favorite thing to order there is the poke bowl. You get to decide if you want tuna, salmon, or shrimp as your main protein. I usually get half tuna and half salmon. The next step is the base: white rice? Brown rice? Greens? I usually get half white rice and half greens. Next, mix ins: Avocado is extra but I usually get that along with cucumber and edamame. After, you choose the sauce: My go to is the spicy aioli because I like things spicy, but I'll also get a side of Nikko sauce just to pour in to add a bit of sweetness. Last step, toppings! Crispy onions, wontons strips and their best feature, spicy jalapeños. Their jalapeños have some kick compared to other ones I've eaten. How many steps was that to order? 5! You see what I mean when people get to order at the counter? It's usually filled with a lot of "Ums..." and "I guess I'll add..." or "what's in the Nikko sauce?" This usually leads to a longer line while customers decide, but the line moves along typically surprisingly well, and the staff makes up for the line by delivering the food fairly quickly, considering how complicated the orders can be! Aside from poke bowls, my coworkers tend to order the Bento box or the bowls. The bowls are usually for one protein, but if you want more variety with your order, then Bento boxes are the way to go since you get to choose a sushi roll, a fried side like gyoza, and a protein like chicken/salmon/beef with a side of rice and/or greens. Your order could be different each time even if you ordered the same bento box because you can always mix up the sauces to try something new! The sushi rolls are not traditional sushi rolls. People are right. They're more like the type you get from a grocery store like Fry's Supermarket and not Aj's supermarket. It'll give you the fast sushi fix that you're looking for to "buy time" until you can go to an actual sushi place. The fish is fresh, but the rice is sometimes dried out when it's in a roll or stiff. I tend to order the "Do Good" roll because part of the proceeds goes to helping animals, so that's a great reason to eat them. The Ramen Bowl comes as is, so it's easy to order and it's fairly good if you're really stumped what to order. There's also a Banh Mi bowl but I haven't tried it yet because I have trouble straying away from poke bowls. My coworkers seem to really enjoy their noodle bowls. Sometimes, if I'm in a real rush and can sit and wait, I order food to go online. By the time I arrive, the food is usually sitting in a cubby near the counter ready to go. I'm very pleased with their online ordering. When we dine in, the staff is super nice and try to clear the table before I have a chance to clean up the table myself. They remind me that it's their job to do that. They have a wide variety of teas available to try too if you love tea. I guess that pretty much sums this place up! Food is fresh, staff is nice, complicated but great variety of a menu. It's pricier to eat here than other places. My poke bowls usually run around $13 and with a drink I'm usually spend about $15. I'm glad that I can get a poke bowl here, since there are no true poke bowl places in Surprise near my work - the closest is Arrowhead and I don't have a long enough lunch break for that. read more

The concept of this Colorado based chain is fast casual with a healthy, mostly Japanese menu, consisting of natural proteins that don't touch any oil during preparation. I custom made my bowl with sirloin steak, white rice, spicy-aki sauce, and had mushrooms, zucchini, and sweet onions for my veggies. The steak was tender but the portion was pretty small and the sauce was more sweet than spicy for my liking. The rice was warm and the vegetables were fresh. My brother had one of the signature bowls, the Yakitori Bowl with white chicken, ramen noodles, and veggies. He was also satisfied with his bowl and the bowl was empty when he finished. Also on the menu are starters, poke bowls, sushi, bento boxes, and salads. There is a wide array of sauces and dressings to choose from to put over your protein. There was a lunch rush when we arrived and waited about 5 minutes to get to the front of the line. Service was helpful at the counter and our food was brought out to us less than 10 minutes after ordering. Lunch for two was $24. Their sushi is about on the same level as a grocery stores but is still pretty good. The bento boxes are so cute and I love how much you can customize it. So I love Ramen. Ive been searching for a place with good ramen on this side of the valley. Tokyo Joes is not the place for that. I tried the General Joes ramen and it was bland. The soup base has no flavor and tasted like water. The rice noodles were under done. The bowl came out luke warm, almost cold. The only good parts of the soup were the pieces of chicken and mushroom. Those were really juicy and moist. My wife had the chicken teriyaki bento box. She said it was nothing special. The chicken in hers desperately needed the teriyaki sauce. Rice was meh. Noodles, bland. They had a few different teas available to drink and were delicious. Make sure you fill the cup with ice before or no ice at all. Their motto i believe is eat good and feel good. I've ordered from here three times in the past week. The first time I ordered several things and found that my favorite thing was the Arizona Roll. The next time I ordered that was the only thing I ordered. Two orders of the 8-pc Arizona Roll. But it wasn't as good as the first time. I went and checked the ingredients online and saw that was supposed to have cucumber in it. I figured they just forgot and it wouldn't happen again. Wrong. A kids bowl arrived with just white rice and a small amount of chicken. When we called the store to let them know of the error and asked if they could please send us the correct item. If you're looking for fast, healthy and delicious sushi rolls, bento boxes or bowls-this is the place! It's a fairly new establishment and the food and serve is great! They have indoor and outdoor seating but it is a smaller place so most people came in, ordered and left. So don't expect a full restaurant that can accommodate large groups. The food is definitely worth it though! I had a create your own bowl with salmon, fresh veggies and brown rice with Yakitori sauce and it was delicious! I also got a Crab Cheese Wonton sushi roll, but did not enjoy it. They have a variety of sauces to add to your bowl or if you do one of their specialty bowls you can interchange the sauces. Coming I in this place for the first time, I was impress immediately when I walked in. The place is clean and organized. Private with their beautiful bamboo shoot wall and yet open and inviting. I talked with a gentleman by the name of Justin and he was able to explain the menu with a knowledge that definitely showed he knew his stuff and cares about what he does.
