What an experience! To get to the bar, you enter through an alley and are greeted with a colorful and lively yet fairly discreet door. Even with a reservation, expect to wait a bit, especially if you're with a group of more than 2. Once inside, the vibes are immaculate. There's so much to look at on the walls and behind the bar. The cocktails are incredible... I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them! Got the First Love and Astro Boy cocktails, which were both excellent. First Love was phenomenal -- it is now on the list of one of my favorite cocktails EVER. Astro Boy was delicious and strong. The food was good, but not amazing. The deviled eggs were tasty, but overly salty. The spicy tuna handroll was my favorite of all the food items, but fairly average. Parking is tricky and not the easiest to find in this area. I had been wanting to check this place out for A while. First Impression I wish there was a separation between the entrance and the bar. Every time someone came, the light disturbed the mood and ambiance which really took away from the experience. It's a small place so I'm sure it's difficult but something to consider especially if you are placed by the door like I was. I have frequented a lot of speakeasies so I have experienced intimate settings. The drinks were very interesting and not something I have ever tasted. They felt overpriced (avg 18-19 each) considering how rushed it felt they were made I wish more time was taken though they were good. Overall, it was interesting. I don't know if I would go for a special occasion maybe if I wanted to try a different type of cocktail and if I was in the area. Again if you want drinks you probably have never had before, this is a great place. Just wish the ambiance wasn't disturbed and the drinks were so expensive. However the tastes are unique. Came here on a Friday night and it was quite packed. We had reservation so it was not so bad, but expect to be rejected. There were also very limited street parking so be ready to walk over. Now I do understand this is a speakeasy, hidden type bar, however the noise is quite unbearable. Yes, speakeasy is not a requirement but at least it would be nice to be able to hear what your friends talk about. The drinks we got were good and very close to the description. There was a drink in the form of gummies caught us by surprised. We really thought it was a drink, turned out to be 3 pieces of alcohol infused gummies for $12. Though, we really enjoyed the shaved ice dessert, probably our favorite of the night. Tokyo Noir is the cool place to be right now. Located down an alley behind El Barrio Cantina, they're reservation only and you have to be in the know as there's no signage. The big draw here is their craftsmanship and high end cocktails. Their ice cubes are flown in from Japan and hand carved. It's quite impressive to watch so I suggest you sit at the bar. We tried the Hibiki Old Fashioned, which to be honest felt like what you expect from an old fashioned. Simple and well-made but nothing unexpected except the giant ice sphere that's taller than the glass and makes for a very funny way to sip your drink. I preferred the Astro Boy or Drunken Tiger as they're both vibrant and fun. All cocktails are around the $18-$22 mark with the truffle old fashioned landing even higher. Don't come hungry but they do have some small bites for bar snacks. I really enjoyed the Bao Buns, and also tried the grilled squid which again is simply simple. The music vibe is old school hip hop and they have some cool photography adorning the walls. For all the hype I expected the drinks to feel more unique but it's a place worth checking out once. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Super-cool, super-small cocktail bar best for date night. The hubby and I've been here twice now and both times we've been impressed. The first time we were there at 5, but we'd made the same reservations error that others have, where we'd reserved under el barrio instead of Tokyo noir, but luckily they were able to squeeze us in as long as we left by 7:30. The second time we'd made reservations for 8:30 (for the correct place this time), and I think we preferred getting there early, before the place got really wound up. It was a much more relaxing vibe, but then again, we're old. The decor is all dim lights and eclectic fun, a squadron of Japanese oni masks vying for wall space with black and white photos of SoCal rappers and lowriders. So far we've tried the following drinks and food: - Hibiki old fashioned (my fave, but one of the spendiest choices) - Nutorious (the hubby's fave) - Drunken Tiger (citrusy and refreshing, love the Korean spicy cucumber garnish) - Astro Boy (refreshing and sweet, but not overly so) - Japanese high ball (refreshing palate cleanser) - Mezcal high ball (very smoky but refreshing) - Wasabi fries (perfectly fried, with yummy accompanying dipping sauce) - Grilled Squid ( perfectly grilled) - Deviled eggs (decadently rich, bordering on too salty) - Charred edamame (wonderful smoky edge in a spicy soy chili sauce) - Grilled Corn (charred corn "ribs" topped with Parmesan crisps) We loved all the drinks and food, and also loved the showmanship of the bartenders as they made the drinks and hand-sculpted the ice cubes/balls (ice flown in from Japan!). Both times we sat at the bar and we think it's the best spot. Two things give me pause on a full five stars, though: Reservations are a pain, which I get because it's such a tiny and popular new place, but there's no spontaneous dropping in here. I have them saved in my OpenTable app and check their availability from time to time. Perhaps as their newness wears off the reservation situation will improve. Also, since this place so small, it is best for an intimate date night than a group outing--their largest seating is for four and it looked pretty cramped with tiny tables at shin-level. It can get kind of loud, so trying to talk to someone not right next to you could take some effort. I came here hyped from the good reviews, and I left wondering if I'd accidentally walked into a dark, edgy, 'lil yakuza-vibe godzilla-themed frat party. Walking to Tokyo Noir's door (that is under a sole yet noticeable lantern) is part of the experience. For its door its nestled amidst an impressive and arresting mural. I interpreted the mural to be a night time garden, in an abstract way. The walls were mostly a shade of green that was a nocturnal color, like an emerald green that was mutating into a turquoise. I caught the pictures of the green amidst this transition of colors. The flowers were not pretty like dignified roses or lilacs picked for a wedding. The flowers were two-dimensional versions of floating lotuses floating in the green river, that held still. My favorite moment was noticing the woman, in the mural walls, who had her eyes closed. She was enjoying the breeze of the night. I want to believe that I look the same when I enjoy the breeze of the night, all peaceful and calm, with flowers floating all around. I touched a button that said "on." Jasmine, came out. She explained that the place was small, and they had reservations. She suggested I come back in an hour- which would be arond 10:00 p.m.- to see if there was a spot for me and my plus one. As she explained all this, I saw the red balloons pictured in this Yelp review. I did not see them in full bloom, but just enough to convince myself that I needed to see more of these balloon lanterns, I would wait the hour and tried anew. When I came back, I did get in. We were sat in a corner table, next to a swinging door. I did not have any reservations, so the table, next to the door, would have to do. I did have a corner spot to see the many things this place had to offer. However, I focused most on the balloon lanterns. I took some pictures of my food, and my drinks, but I did not get all of the food and drinks pictures. I was distracted. I did see Jasmine and another server dancing, I think it was called the Milly Rock. So my corner spot allowed me to see much, I fumbled, and did not take pictures of all. The first drink I got was an Umami drink that I cannot remember the name of. It came inside a small bowl with a lid and a spoon. When I opened it, I saw Daikon on top of an ice cube--- those huge ice cubes that sit on a drink alone. I was instructed to mix the Daikon into the drink. I tasted the drink, and my brain was confused in this wonderful way. My savory drink tasted like broth, yes it tasted like broth. Like after I eat Ramen, there is a bit of broth at the end. Imagine that someone spiked this remaining broth and poured into a small bowl that acted like a cup. That was the drink. I sipped, and I enjoyed it more because it was complex and new. I did not enjoy it because of its taste. But remember I am picky. I wish I had the name of this drink, or a picture of this drink, because sipping this was new and to a foodie who has seen much and tasted even more, drinking something so new is a treasure worth its weight in origami paper cranes. The drink menu itself is like a story book. In one of my pictures you can see a Godzilla like creature fighting another Kaiju. The name of the drink is Kaiju so the pictures make sense. I think I did not take a lot of pictures of the food and the drinks because the red-light ambiance of the place coupled with all there was to see, stopped me from remembering that I should focus on more than the environment of the place. We did have the corn dogs, they were solid. They were a miss because they had serrano flakes and I am over heat. The street corn was grand. There was a piece of thin cheese atop of the corn, and when you ate the corn and cheese together, not pick the cheese like a chip, like I first did, the corn dish sings. The cheese was a cotija crisp, that is why it could be picked up like a chip. I would skip the edamame, it is too unique to be worth it. The crispy rice dish is a must. I sampled one, and immediately knew I needed a second round. We also had the salmon truffle roll--- that was an exceptional dish. It tasted light, complex, and tasted like Izayaka food should--- like onion rings from a really good pub do, both food just made sense with the vibe, promise and drinks of the place. By the end, I was stuffed. I had a lot of food. I was more than satisfied, I was bloated. I only have myself to blame, I cannot edit my ordering, I order to taste and know. I cannot forget to mention that when someone presses the button outside a neon sign of Godzilla lights up. As I was leaving, I took some pictures of some women. I had the bright idea of moving a chair so I can squat, against a wall, so I could get the picture of the woman with the red lantern balloons in the background all perfect like. I succeed in the attempt but I did not think of how I would get up. I was full of food and liquor, I could not rise. All three women gave their hands. I did not accept any. Omg, finally got to go last night and I loved! I first saw Instagram ads for this place everywhere back in December and I have been trying to go but reservations are super hard to get. They open bookings 7 days in advance so I highly recommend looking a week in advance in the morning and grabbing a bar seating! (I'm not sure if they do walk-ins?) The whole bar is quite small- there is maybe 8-10 seats around the bar and 10ish~ seats at high top tables but the bar is where all the action is with the funky bartender making cool drinks and cutting shaved ice from Japan (LOL?). My reservation was for 2 at 8:30 but we didn't get seated until 9:10 as other reservations ran late and it's easy to see why. The drinks and food are really good (and the venue is so small) so be prepared to stand in the cold outside for a bit potentially! I ordered the charred edamame, okonomi corn dogs, and Okinawa Gimlet to drink. Both the appetizers were recommendations and they were fantastic. The waitress especially sold me on the corn dogs because she said she doesn't normally love corn dogs (as do I) but these are different and special and I 110% agree. I woke up this morning craving the corn dogs and already can't wait to go back just for these. !! Is really all I can say; my experience here was nothing short of incredible. The ambiance is what really got me. Funny enough, as we were looking for the bar, we walked up with two young ladies who were also trying to find the entrance. We were all so confused because, looking from the outside, it does not look like a bar entrance. You need to ring a bell, which will then light up from inside and notify the staff that you're there. We lightly joked that this was a bad escape room game. The paintings on the outside of the building are gorgeous, and once you're inside, it's small but beautiful with a Japanese/Long Beach vibe, if that makes sense. It was a misty and raining SoCal night, my date was running behind schedule. She knew I had been trying to lock down reservations for some time. The LA fires prevented us for meeting up the first time around. So we were determined not to let the rain damper our plans. I took refuge at the main restaurant, El Barrio Cantina. The vibes were chill, and the bartender served up a smooth Oaxacan Old-Fashioned. The drink shook off the frost from the cold outside and slowly warmed me up. I mentioned that I was just grabbing a drink, and making my way to Tokyo Noir. He was a true Gent, and coordinate with the team in the back, letting them know I would be late. Tokyo Noir is a top-notch experience. I felt like the character in Tokyo Vice, Jake Adelstein, an American journalist, who gets plugged into the Tokyo Vice police squad and carefully navigates through the two worlds of Tokyo. The food was a TEN. The skirt steak strip was tender, nicely marinated, and cooked to perfection. The oversized chicken wings were tasty and filling. I'm so glad we didn't forget to order the Wasabi fries, they packed so much flavor and were a great finish to our meal. The bartenders were skilled bladesmiths (cutlers), wielding a knife with ease. It felt as though we were watching Michelangelo carve David from marble. The way they took a block of ice, chopped it up, and refined it into a civilized cocktail glass was purely art. The attention to detail, knowledge of their beverages, and the service exceeded expectations. The Astro Boy and Notorious were my favorite drinks. I don't like giving bad reviews, but our experience at Tokyo Noir was less than ideal. The drinks are fantastic. Super unique and each one we tried was fantastic. I was excited to see on the menu that they were serving Kinobi gin from Kyoto. I discovered this gin on a trip to Kyoto have since bought it regularly. To my surprise, when I saw the bartenders making the drinks they were using Gray Whale. Gray Whale is fine, but it's not in the same league at Kinobi. I realize Kinobi can be hard to find at times but If there's a substitution like that, the server should say something when you order the drink or if it's a recipe change, the menu should be updated. Speaking of service, that's what really brought me to write this re view. Before we even ordered we were told that we would only have 90 minutes. That honestly killed the vibe and made us feel rushed. Like the OpenTable confirmation even said we'd have two hours. And for tge rest of our time there our server pretty much ignored us. They forgot some of the food we ordered and shoved the check in our face when they wanted us to leave. I'm guessing they were stretched too thin? I think they need to hire another person to be a server or maybe get an extra bartender and have them wait on the people at the bar. At a bar like this service is everything. Ice Master Kevin Lee and Jesse Duron, owner of El Barrio, did a fantastic job creating a discreet bar that feels like you're in the narrow streets of Tokyo. From the entryway from the alley, the button at the door that turns on the light inside, and intimate space gives the place an exclusive vibe. Small, but lively with old school hip hop playing from Duron's 1990s-2000s playlists. The focal point is the ice, imported from Japan because it's made with soft water. The molecules are more compact, making the chiseling a bit more difficult, but the clarity and taste is what Lee aims to present. Throughout my couple visits, Lee would take out blocks of ice and begin cutting away at them with different knives with such precision and skill. The cocktails we tried were remarkable and we could taste every ingredient in them with each sip: Astro Boy: Haku vodka, sweet potato sochu, bergamot, Calpico and lemon. Smooth, zesty yet creamy. Anything with Calpico is nostalgic. Okinawa Gimlet: Oka vodka, Shikuwasa citrus, Ki No Bi gin, and housemade bitters. Sour, not too sweet and packs a punch. Drunken Tiger: Toki whisky, umeshu, Japanese cucumber, Korean red pepper rhubarb and amaro. Practically a Japanese cucumber salad, but better! Juice Theory: Puro Potro Blanco, umeshu, watermelon, Amaro and fermented tomato. Dynamic & refreshing! The Nutorious: Roku Gin, Amaras Mezcal, Vermouth, Walnut, and Hojicha Amaro. My favorite! So much flavor going on and I love the nutty tea finish. Truffle Fashioned: Yoichi, Truffle, Okinawan Rock Sugar and Housemade Bitters. $28. They only put one slice of truffle on top of the block of ice, but what an olfactory experience with each sip! First Love kakigori (shaved ice cocktail): Daiyama Shochu, guava, grapefruit, and Calpico. $22 but it's pretty large! Great for a dessert to share among 2-4 people. Izakaya Menu: gotta admit, I was hoping for a little more authenticity or traditional dishes, but most of the dishes were well executed and satisfied the bar bite cravings. My faves: Charred Edamame- quite possibly the BEST edamame I've ever had with garlic soy, chili árbol and lime. Okonomi Corn Dogs- love the texture & flavor of Japanese sausages with light corn bread topped with bonito flakes, Kewpie mayo, Serrano & Okonomiyaki sauce. Nagoya Wings- come with two, large, juicy, crispy wings with light teriyaki, sesame & white pepper. Not bad: Temakis are small, but reasonably priced, along with the Wasabi Fries. Okay: The Deviled Eggs were a bit on the salty side. The Oysters and Salmon Crudo were small and underwhelming. The Buta (pork) Bao Buns were furthest from being Japanese, but they were on the slightly larger side. 12 seats at the bar, 3 high-top tables that seat 2 each and a table that seats 4. That's it! Highly recommend. Other items I had that were good: steak, corn dogs, and a tuna hand roll. The only drink I enjoyed drinking was the Old Fashioned. Strictly my opinion. I felt the presentation of the drinks was a 10/10. The bar tenders truly spend time making these drinks. For me personally, I didn't like the taste of a couple of them and I also felt it was all about the presentation of the ice. It's more ice to liquid ratio if you know what I mean. My visit was on a Saturday at 6 pm with a group of four. Reservations: Highly recommended and time slots open a week in advance. It may be easier to get bar seating but if you have a party larger than four, you may be seated at the corner tables. Parking: Street parking or you can park at a small lot directly across the street. You will see an El Barrio Cantina parking sign. Ambiance: The entrance to Tokyo Noir is in the lit alleyway next to El Barrio Cantina. You will ring the bell at the door where the lantern is hanging. The lights on the inside will brighten when the doorbell is pressed. An employee will open the door for you. Make sure you are careful stepping in and out of that door. Once you enter, you're in an intimate and dimly lit room with some bar seats, high tabletops, and a couple corner tables. Some old school hip hop music was playing that wasn't too loud. The servers were friendly and checked on us here and there. Only thing that would have been nice is if they mentioned what food items were being placed on the table instead of putting it down and walking away. We had to use our phone flashlight to see what the food was since it was so dark in there lol. Drinks: I ordered "First Love" not knowing it was a shaved ice cocktail meant to be shared with 2-4 ppl. Now I know "kakigori" means shaved ice in Japanese lol. Nonetheless, the presentation was pretty and the cocktail itself was delicious and sweet with a tiny hint of alcohol. The cream on top was so good. This would be a good drink to end the night with as a dessert. For my second drink, I ordered the Kaiju which had Japanese rum, midori, creme anglaise and yuzu. I really enjoyed it. Food: From their Izakaya menu, I ordered the Wasabi Fries, Deviled Eggs and Dragon handroll. These are small bites so don't expect to get full unless you're ordering a lot more. Other people in my party ordered the corn dogs and bao buns which seemed bigger and more filling. The Wasabi Fries were not spicy at all with a hint of wasabi on the fries and in the aioli. The Deviled Eggs which came with three was my favorite of the items I tried. The pickled onions balanced the saltiness of the miso. The Dragon handroll was small and decent. Overall, it was a nice experience and I'd come back to sit at the bar so I can see the ice cubes being shaved and cut. read more

First & foremost, I'd like to thank Emmy for being sooo amazing. I don't think we would've had such a great experience if it weren't for her. Came here on a Sunday, party of 4 around 5:30pm. Loved the ambiance -- super chic, classy, & intimate. Definitely a place where you can sit down and just vibe over delicious food & drinks. I kid you not, we couldn't stopped ordering haha. I'm going to list out our favorites: Drinks: strawberry highball, yuzu strawberry, freak on a leash, first love, truffle fashioned, & dirty soba. All of the drinks were unique in its own way and some even had names based off anime's which I thought was pretty cool! Food: Wagyu skirt, buta Bao bun, okonomi corn dogs, Nagoya wings, corn, blue fin tostada, & yuzu roll. If you've never been here -- it's a must!! Make sure to make reservations prior & arrive a bit early as parking can be a bit tricky. There is a parking lot specifically for "El Barrio Cantina" across the street which is a restaurant connected to Tokyo Noir. Saw this place on Instagram and wanted to try it out. I made a reservation but the only time left was 11:45 pm. It is a speakeasy and you enter through the alley. You use a buzzer and then someone comes and lets you in. The place is not big so make a reservation. It was full. We sat at the bar which felt like a sushi bar. The decor was very cool. The bartenders were great and their artistry was fun to watch. The drinks were not only lovely, they were tasty. I asked for a refreshing tequila drink and the bartender hit it on the nose. They stop serving food at midnight but we were able to grab the steak and deviled eggs. The steak was very good and flavorful. We love deviled eggs and these did not disappoint. THIS was what Long Beach was missing all along. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended! They only open spots a week out and open pretty late on the weekends (until 2 am). To save you from scoping out for street parking, I appreciate that they have parking lot across the street. This Japanese style speakeasy is located behind Barrio Cantina-- look for the red lantern in the alleyway. The space itself is very small and intimate. Because of the red dim lighting, it felt like you're in in a darkroom. But then BAM you're struck with this marvelous lit bar. They have a variety of Japanese whiskey to create any concoction. The staff were all super friendly. The beautiful hostesses checked on us frequently and the funny bartenders made us the tastiest drinks based off our preferences. These guys were the REAL deal cutting and making their own ice balls for the drinks. Shoutout to Jacob! Get the "Notorious" if you enjoy smokey notes and "Juice Theory" if you like tomato. Their $5 hand rolls were also delicious. We ordered them twice. Consider yourself lucky if you get a Resi here. It's completely worth it. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here--great vibes and excellent music. We ordered several dishes and drinks, including two servings of one particular dish. Unfortunately, only one arrived. When we politely asked the waitress about the missing second portion, she insisted we had already received both. I explained that unless they serve two portions on a single plate, we definitely hadn't received the second one. She checked with her colleagues and returned to say they all agreed we had received both dishes. I didn't want to argue, so I said I'd pay for it anyway, even though we never got the second serving. Unfortunately, her response was quite rude, and the overall interaction left a bad taste. While the food and ambiance were enjoyable, the way we were treated when raising a legitimate issue was disappointing. The staff seemed more focused on insisting they were right than on providing good service or resolving the mistake. I wouldn't recommend this place based on this experience--they were clearly at fault but handled it poorly and made us feel like we were in the wrong. read more

Some of the most creative cocktails I've ever had!!! Even my liver agreed! This is a Japanese inspired speak easy, including the sneaky entrance! But as with any speakeasy, space is limited, so please make reservations! The winner of the night for me was the truffle fashioned- nothing like I've ever tasted before! You must be a lover of fungi to appreciate how you'll be transported to a wonderland boozy forest floor after joyfully imbibing. And please nibble on the shaved black truffle that comes with. My friend and I also had the drunken tiger (a complex ode to cucumber including fermented cuke garnish), and monochrome (the fermented olive made this martini!). The barkeeps are extremely skilled and you will enjoy watching them in action, even shaving the ice! Love this new speakeasy bar in Long Beach! It's a cute little bar hidden behind El Barrio Cantina but you feel like you're in Tokyo right when you walk in. The bar and the bartender totally fit the "Japanese speakeasy" bar vibe. My friends and I all enjoyed are drinks, the food and the ambiance. I got the okinawa gimlet which was refreshing and not too sweet. We ordered the first love to all try and it was an amazingly light shaved ice drink. Apparently the ice is flown in from Japan! This was an all around favorite so definitely order that as a drink to share. For the bites, we got the wasabi fries, deviled eggs, corn dogs, corn and a handroll. All really good and reasonably priced. There were so many other things on the menu that I can't wait to go back and try. Service was really great the entire night! The location was down an alley marked with a red lantern above the door. I'm sure the staff at the Mexican restaurant (connected) get asked a lot. Lol. The food was delicious- we tried the waygu roll, dragon, crispy rice and the corn dog. There are only 24 seats available, you must make reservations, 10 of those seats are at the "bar". The bartenders are artists. My mocktail was also very yummy. Hints of ginger soda along with yuzu. The Monochrome was also very unique. Martini that is savory yet fruity. The vibe of the room was totally chill too. I really enjoyed this intimate experience with amazing food and drinks.
