Tokyo Stop Teriyaki is located in a Bellevue strip mall off 148th Ave. The entrance is a bit unusual. There are two doors, but they both lead to the same place. The left side door seems to be a row of chairs, which appears to be set aside for those waiting for takeout orders. There are just a few dine in tables so it is a pretty small space. Typical menu of what you can expect from a teriyaki joint. Teriyaki meats and yakisoba. I did see a bulgogi plate and Chinese selections though. I went with the #18 combination teriyaki chicken and chicken katsu ($8.95). Waiting time was pretty short. Ready in 5 minutes. Both chicken selections actually are quite good tasting. The teriyaki was flavorful and had a good mix of salty and sweet. The katsu was also good and comparable to what I get at plate lunch places in Hawaii. Though the stars are lost on the other items. The salad was the typical pre-packed iceberg lettuce salad with ranch dressing. The rice was disappointingly mushy, but curiously shaped like a mini football. Grading on the teriyaki scale, I would say Tokyo Stop is worth a try for their teriyaki. Though with all of the food options nearby, it is not something I would go out of my way for. This would've been a 5 star review because I come here often and I love their food, fried rice and their portions! But today was not the case. My boyfriend came in and ordered both of us food to go. I was on FaceTime with him and heard him order my order (half spicy teriyaki, half katsu w/fried rice) then his order. When he got our order, only my order was in the bag. When my boyfriend said he also ordered another teriyaki, the man said no because they just closed even though he had already ordered it the worker just didn't hear him apparently. Eating teriyaki. Most places you go, it's not like eating real food, unfortunately. Any chance the meat and vegetables might have had to resemble genuine sources of nutrition, those are generally cancelled out by white rice, or iceberg lettuce, or, especially, a dousing in gnarly sodium-rich sauces chock full o' additives and preservatives. But some of us like to get good grub cheap and can't quite succumb to fast food. Some of us being people who work too late and don't have dinner sitting on the table when we get home. So to find a place that cranks out credible ingredients for under $10 without making you wait forever, that's a handy resource. Tokyo Stop comes pretty close. The sauce didn't exactly seem scratch-made, and the "vegetables" were an iceberg mix. But the chicken was cooked whole to order, then chopped and plated. This is a distinction that the teriyaki denizen uses to define the difference between "fast food teriyaki" and "restaurant teriyaki." A poor man's culinary Mason-Dixon, perhaps, but TS is definitely in the latter category. With real steamed vegetables, it would be a little easier to get excited, but, in the teriyaki world, those travel in even more rarefied air. What I will say is that the people here are truly super nice, genuinely funny and chatty--certainly more vivacious in English than I am in any second language. The place is clean and there are plenty of tables. But what I really don't understand is how every teriyaki joint in the damn world ends up with the same awful piped-in music. It's always that Delilah show--I am not making this up; I swear I've heard it in a dozen yaki joints. Sitting through Goodbye Yellow Brick Road while I ate was painful enough (sorry, Sir Elton fans), but then to hear that treacly voice emerging from the hi-fi was enough to remind why I go more for the pho now. Their food is always decent, portions are quite large, and service is friendly, but what I've never been able to get over is their pricing. My favorite item on the menu is their Beef Short Rib (kalbi) dinner, which comes with a small side salad, a big mound of rice, and enough kalbi to last me two meals. But at $10.99 (regular) - $14.99 (king size) for that alone??? At a teriyaki place??? I don't know...there's a stingy old Asian woman in me who can't help but scoff and say "Really?? I could probably make this at home for cheaper!"...but the argument of convenience usually wins (and I have been going back for 7 years after all, so I guess they're doing something right), and I cave once again to the dismay of my disgruntled wallet. read more

A definite thumbs up for lunch here. Today I gave the chicken & beef teriyaki a whirl. It's pretty good! They give you lots and lots of nicely seasoned meat. It might be a tad heavy on charcoal grill flavor though. A minor minus: the salad dressing (that comes from a squirt bottle on your table) is watery and weak in flavor (faintly ginger). Most of the tables are in a thin long hallway that goes from front to back in the restaurant. Honestly probably more like 4.5 stars! I've driven by this place MANY times, but it was never a time to eat when I was there so I just never stopped in. I'm SO glad I finally was able to try it recently though! This is definitely my go-to spot for fast teriyaki (as in, without the whole ordeal of going to a nice restaurant and ordering from a menu, etc. etc. etc.). I had the chicken teriyaki and OMG there was a TON of food! Not only that, but it was GOOD food too! The chicken was still moist and very flavorful -- so many other places have dry chicken/protein and it can even seem bland but it was quite nice here. The extra teriyaki sauce was flavorful as well (not seeming as though it was from a bottle purchased in a store). I may even try their chicken katsu (which is usually rather dry) and just see what magical thing they may do with it! My husband had the yakisoba which was also very flavorful (and HUGE). I definitely want to try some of the other dishes here... maybe I finally have found a spot that will do a good beef teriyaki that I've craved ever since a family-owned business near my childhood home closed.... this is definitely the best shot I've got at coming close! Why'd I ding them the half star? It feels a little bit uncomfortable in the shop. It has overhead lighting that seems a bit harsh and just tons of pictures of the food with prices -- there's just too much to take in. I wish it were a bit more succinct so I could quickly peruse the menu and find a gem instead of feeling like I'm holding up a line if I want to look at all the options. The dining area in the front room also seems a little uncomfortable as many people walk in and place orders while they dine in front of us; there is the option to dine in the hallway though which I'd probably opt for if it were a busier time of day just so I don't feel like the world is watching me eat! The owner here is super nice. The price is right for the size of the portion. Food is good although the chicken katsu can be a bit overcooked and oily. They give super fresh salads and dressing on the side. The beef teriyaki is tender and sweet. I've recently tried their fried rice and it was delicious! The portion filled the box to the brim. Definitely come here if you're hungry! Their gyoza are crunchy on the outside and flavorful on the inside. Another good thing is that you can mix and match any entree/meat/appetizer. Ordered spicy chicken teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, and gyoza. Chicken was well marinated/seasoned and the sauce was good too. (Sauce wasn't that store-bought gooey sugary stuff some places use). I've tried the chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, general tso's chicken, and chicken katsu so far. All have been superb and above average, especially the beef teriyaki. The regular chicken has more flavor than many other places, I believe they marinate it to achieve this. The spicy chicken is great. A sweet/ spicy combination.
