First off all, this is too expensive of a restaurant to force us to look at menus on our phones, order ourselves on our phones and cash ourselves out on our phones. If I wanted to do that why wouldn't I just get take out? Second off all there were only 6 tables in the restaurant and 3 servers and still it was impossible to get service, no waters, no asking how the food was, no nothing. This all would have been okay if the food were good but it was not. The pappardelle was not good, over cooked and served in straight up butter, not a butter sauce, just unseasoned butter. We dined in the bar seating area (restaurant was packed).Our server was courteous, attentive and helpful as we were first time guests. Open kitchen with dual brick ovens. Made our way over here ravenous after a viewing at the AMC nearby on a Saturday at 8pm. Was surprisingly able to get seated right away for 3. The garlic rolls are supposed to be award winning so we got an order of 4 to share. These come topped with garlic and sit atop an herb infused olive oil. They're also served with a marinara sauce. These were good, not great. The bread itself was very dense. The garlic and olive oil was good but there isn't really enough dipping for all 4 rolls. The marinara sauce helps with this. There's a winter menu right now with a bunch of specials including an eggplant pizza which I opted for my main. A really good pizza topped with a lot of eggplant, bell peppers, mozzarella and Parmesan. The crust was minimal which I'm also a fan of. The personal size is a pretty good portion and I could have stood to box some to go but powered though it anyways. Overall a good experience! read more

Decent dining experience. I fully recommend the **Garlic Rolls** and you should request marinara AND ranch sauce. Good with either (or both! if you like mixing). The pizzas have a super thin and crispy crust. You can hear a nice loud crunch from the person across the table. If you get a salad, make sure to ask for dressing on the side. Our house salads were completely drenched in vinaigrette. As I learned, there IS such a thing as too much vinaigrette. Pasta is hit or miss. Some dishes are pretty bland. However I've tried a few specials that were very good, but they aren't available for very long. One was the Pesto Gnocchi with Pork (can't remember if that's what it was called) -- this dish was simply amazing. The pesto was perfect, the braised pork was super juicy, and the other ingredients such as cherry tomatoes and garlic were a great touch. I tried another pasta special the other day that was excellent -- Oriecchiette con Tacchino (Shell Pasta with Turkey) -- which was delightful and unique. Bite sized shell pasta with pan-roasted turkey breast, cubed butternut squash, spinach, sliced garlic, fresh sage, and browned butter broth. At first I was dubious and curious about the butternut squash, but it was a light and tasty dish! The portion was large and filling enough for me. They also have Italian sodas in all sorts of flavors. Pomegranate Italian soda is delicious. The tiramisu is pretty decent. TIP: More garlic rolls, please! read more

The only thing I liked in the dish was the veggies - LOL - mushroom, cauliflower and broccoli - oven roasted and tasted good with salt and pepper! Mass market Italian food. Enough said. Though I do prefer it to Olive Garden :\ Came here with fellow Yelper Michael C. soon after the painful bar crawl in Los Gatos (#loscrawl on Twitter). The intent was to have some food, perhaps catch a movie at the nearby AMC Mercado and then call it a weekend. This would change. Anyway, Tomatina is located in the same plaza as the AMC theaters so getting here is quite easy - parking can be challenging but if you don't mind walking a bit, there's plenty of parking to be had. Interesting interior decor and setup. While there is traditional booth and table seating, there are two distinctive seating features that I've not noticed anywhere else in the US. A "bar" area which is really a large communal table set with barstools and a really long wood communal table which is were we were seated. This is a strange setup - with multiple groups seated at the same table (separated by a small distance but still, same table). Very social, very European - now, if the food would only remind me of Europe, this would be ideal!!! Against my better judgment, I ordered a glass of Chardonnay to go with my Caprese Piadine. The food was presented nicely (see photo) - though I wish I had asked for the dressing on the side since it was virtually drenched in it!!! And the romaine hearts were a bit on the dry/wilted side - nothing gross though. The sun dried tomatoes would have been nicer had they been a bit on the drier side - they were kind of soggy from the dressing. And the mozzarella and pesto were delicious so I was happy. Service was prompt, courteous and friendly - our waiter stopped by several times with refills of water and asking how the food was. Overall, this was a good experience and I will definitely consider a return trip if I'm in the area. The two stars here go for the food. I have to admit the piadines are my fave. But my last dining experience here is what's causing the lackluster review. We ordered a piadine, pasta dish, and a salad to start. The salad was on their specials menu and had arugula, asparagus, red onions, oranges, and prosciutto. Salad sounded yummy to me. When the salad arrived we attacked it since we were starving. Halfway in we realize there's no prosciutto in the salad. We wave over our server and she says she'll check the menu to confirm if it's supposed to have prosciutto. She comes back and confirms and gives the excuse that it's a new specials item so perhaps that's why the kitchen forgot to include it. K fine. Then she says, "Let me ask my manager." I'm thinking what's she gonna ask him? K fine. By this time the rest of our food arrives and we've finished the salad. Then we finish our meal and the bill arrives. We pay and are ready to leave. No mention or follow up either from our server regarding the prosciutto. A few things could have happened here: um, #1, she could have brought out some proscuitto! #2, the salad might have been discounted or comped, or perhaps, maybe just a simple, "sorry we forgot it," would have sufficed (While she nonchalantly confirmed it, she never apologized); #3, the manager could have said something. It wasn't even about the stinkin' proscuitto, (we ate the salad anyway) but the principle of the matter. She led us to believe there was going to be some kind of follow up from her manager and there never was. Any of the above scenarios would have made my experience better. In fact, if any of the three happened, I probably would have even raved about their customer service. But nope. Tip to our server: better to under-promise and over-deliver. Not happy.. I placed an online order fir 5 pizzas and salads at 11am (received email confirmation at 11:07am), pre-paid, for pick up at 12noon. I arrived at 11:55am, the manager told me that they just received my order and proceeded to 'pretend' to print out the order from the computer. We've driven/walked past this place MANY times since we go to the AMC in this plaza quite often. I've always wondered if this place was any good until the other night when we decided to watch a movie at the last minute and had enough time to burn and have dinner in this plaza before the showing. This place was very packed by the time we arrived and because we didn't have enough time to wait for a table inside, we decided to sacrifice and sit outside even though it was super windy that night. It took at least 5-10 minutes before the waitress came by with some SUPER ICY water. Then it took another 10 minutes before she came by to take our order - even though we had already decided on the carne combo pizza before we sat down. As time starts slipping by, we were worried that we might miss our movie showing. We then decided to take our pizza to-go so we can eat in the comfort (and warmth!) of our own car...and that somehow made the pizza ready faster than it would have been if we had just sat outside and waited for what seemed like forever! The pizza was very delicious - it was in a rectangular shape, which I thought was interesting since most restaurants make them round. We ended up getting into the theater just in time for our showing with little time to spare - had we waited at our table outside the restaurant, we may very well have missed our movie and had to freeze ourselves to death while trying to enjoy our pizza! read more

Tomatinaaaaa! Oval, thin crust pizza pies made to order (or choose a special). They're round if you order small. So Here's The Deal: Tomatina pizza will live on in our dreams for years to come. Ok. Months to come, since we'll be back sometime this year on our next trip up to San Francisco. The perfectly cooked thin crust made it DEVINE. The toppings offered made it a LEGEND. We chose... Roasted garlic cloves. OMG. sauteed Mushrooms. Heavenly. and Pepperoni. Delish. We're lovers of pizza and more so thin crust pizza in the style of New Haven/New London. Crispy and chewy. Not Thin and flopsy like NYC. (NYC pies are great in their own right, though). I took the roasted garlic cloves and smeared them along the edge of the crust and kind of spread them around a bit on each slice. Otherwise they might have been a bit too much, a huge piece in one bite. I didn't mind moving them about though since it resulted in a few roasted garlic finger-licking frenzies. Annnyway... Embarrassing foodie details aside: Wow. This pizza was perfect. We've been looking for pizza like this for a looooong time over here in California (North County San Diego to be specific). We're so happy to have found it no matter what the location. The prices seemed fair, a touch high... and the interior was lovely. I loved seeing the fires from the oven. (Though we did order it as take-out since it was about 40 minutes til closing) The staff was nice and polite even though they put the pizza in the box upside down. We noticed it and kept it in that position so no harm done. Tomatina Chef: Thank you for sauteing those mushrooms for us before putting them on the pie. We love that version and it's a rare thing to find. Ditto for the roasted garlic. The pepperoni you chose is great. Sometimes papperoni has a chemical-y taste or a rancid taste but this was fresh and yummy with great spiciness. Order this if you're in the area! You won't regret it. Tomatina is a great spot for lunch in my book. Love their garlic rolls that are dredged in warm "garlicy" olive oil (mmmm). I love most of their main courses... Piadine's are fun to eat (basically a yummy salad placed on a big piece of flatbread - meant to be folded and eaten like a sandwich). Today, I had their Pepperoni Piadine (picture a pepperoni pizza on flatbread, topped with a cesar salad - yum). Their calzones are great if you are ready for a big meal. Sometime's they will serve Gnocchi as a special - melt in your mouth goodness. Their wood fired oven pizza's are great also... Their "mother" restaurant (Tra Vigne in Napa) definitely have a winner restaurant here... One thing about Tomatina in Santa Clara's Mercado Center is that it is hopping at lunch, and fills up fast. Quick stop during a work conference to have some lunch since they have several gluten free pasta and pizza options. I'm not a fan of sitting at a long table top next to strangers but I also understand it's the best seating option for the lunch hour rush. The service took a little long to stop by, especially when people that arrived much later than me ate and left while I was still waiting for my food. My waitress was a little all over the place and it was clear the manager was not happy with her since the manager served me most of the time. A little unprofessional to have little bickering wars in the middle of the restaurant in front of lunch rush. I would suggest to take the waitress to the side and talk to her then. The pizza was good. I would've like to have it cooked/baked a little longer to have a golden crust and so the crust wouldn't be so soggy towards the center. I had the 5 cheese pizza and it was good. Probably 1.5 stars, really. There wasn't anything about my lunch at Tomatina that would make me want to return. To be fair, the interior is nice in a casual way and the prices are fairly reasonable. The person I was with ordered one of the piadines - basically a flatbread crust with a bunch of salad dropped on it. I guess you roll it up and eat it like a burrito? Whatever - she said it was just okay and kind of hard to eat. I went with the lunch special which is $9.50 for a soup or salad plus a lunch sized entrée (two or three pastas or a pizza). My pick was minestrone and a pesto pasta. The minestrone was effectively a teaspoon of ketchup dissolved in hot water with a few veggies listlessly floating around. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The pesto was slightly better but in desperate need of seasoning/salt - and when I say that, it really needs seasoning as I'm not a "salt" person. Service was slow and inattentive, even though we were past the lunch rush (came in after 1pm). It took a long time for us to be waited on and drinks were never refilled despite my glass being empty for at least half the meal. I can't think of any reason I'd ever come back. read more

I tried to support this place throughout the COVID shutdowns, but they are not making it easy. We've ordered for pick-up twice, and they screwed up both times. I always order the chicken parm with a side of fettuccine alfredo instead of the pasta with marina. Mixing the white and red sauce makes the dish so much more flavorful. When we went in in-person, this was never an issue, but both times we ordered for pick-up and asked for the modification, they said they would do it, but didn't. Once and I would chalk it up to a mistake, but both times? You're just disregarding modifications at that point and making me pay for a meal that I didn't actually order. On top of that, the last time I got it, my chicken was burnt. The chicken was dry and the sauce and cheese had disintegrated on most of the chicken. I was excited to try Tomatina last month, as its closely located to my new office building. However, it didn't meet expectations. The piadine sounded delicious when I ordered it, but it was very hard to eat and was so-so. I didn't try anything else, as everyone at our table tried the piadine, and everyone had the same experience. It wasn't "bad" but it wasn't good. The service was also pretty bad. The server never came back to our table, we had to ask another server for our check and a refill. Overall, I wouldn't suggest it for lunch. The pizza's may be a better choice as well, but not sure. If you are a fan of GOOD service, don't bother coming here. You will end up leaving frustrated and mad at the amount you paid for bad service. read more

Favorite thing on the menu is the caprese piadine. It's like a caprese salad sitting on a pizza crust with caesar dressing. You fold it in half like a giant taco and chomp it down. There are helpful illustrations provided with the piadines showing you this is the correct way to consume them instead of with knife and fork. You have to order the garlic rolls and make sure to put the marinara sauce and the oil on your garlic roll before eating it. Two garlic rolls per person is perfect if you plan to eat the rest of your meal. My new favorite thing on the menu are the meatballs. I could seriously come to Tomatina for the garlic rolls and meatballs as a meal. The meatballs are a good size, perfect flavor. To wash all this goodness down, I recommend the vanilla mint lemonade. By far the best pizza in Santa Clara. I typically order a create-your-own pizza: Italian sausage, mushrooms, red onions and extra cheese. The pizza is rectangular; if you order the large (which is always good idea), the inner slices are prime pizza real estate. Each time, my order is prepared correctly. I wish this restaurant delivered, as a typical order through DoorDash costs about $54 per pizza. This pizza is so good though that I actually devote time to reheating it in the oven after it arrives. Convenient location for movie goers since Tomatina and AMC Mercado are in one plaza, on the other hand, this makes parking a bit difficult and in peak hours I have to park all the way over the the other side of the plaza. The pizzas are generally thin crust, but the toppings are not too generous. For example, we tried the "Fennel Sausage, Roasted Apples, & Leeks", the menu sounded attractive but there weren't enough sausage on the pizza nor did I taste any roasted apples. The "Mediterranean II" had strong components of goat cheese. We had a friend who doesn't like goat cheese and appearantly they had too much on it and made the flavor too obvious.
