I love diners! I work at one & don't consider myself overly judgmental. It's seat yourself, they have a huge disgusting fish tank, and everything looks torn up & like no one there has ever ever cleaned! The food was delicious! Having been here a handful of times, I feel it's appropriate to finally review it. The food is as standard as you can get for greasy spoon diner fare. Nothing too special. If you just have water with your food, prepare to experience all of the flavors that South King County has to offer because it tastes like they stuck a glass in the Cedar River and threw it on your table. Each time I've gone here, the coffee tastes as if the pot hadn't been cleaned in months. Food is underwhelming and most of the time not hot. The wait staff have a good amount of spunk to them, and will sass you as necessary. I'm okay with that but I've observed that it does rub some people the wrong way. If you have vertigo, I highly suggest avoiding this place as it was clearly pieced together randomly. Nothing is level. Tables, windows, walls, and the floors slant at all different angles. Lastly, and I hope that this was a one time occurrence...the last time I was here, I went up to the counter to pay for mine and my father's meal. While the guy behind the counter was running my card, I noticed his eyes shifting back and forth between me and my card. Flipping it over and over, looking back at me, silently mouthing to himself. So I asked what the hell he was doing because it looked like he was trying to memorize my card # and the code on the back. price/portion ratio: The price here is on par with other breakfast food joints, but they do provide a good amount of food for the price. And for you with lighter appetites, they have a mini meal! 3 stars on my Budget Bites scale. location/parking: The location is pretty easy to find. It's on the east side of Rainier Ave about 5 minutes off of I-405 right by where HWY-167 north ends, and south begins. They have their own private lot and so parking shouldn't be an issue. selection/presentation: They have an awesome selection of breakfast foods. Not as big of a selection of scrambles and skillets as Denny's and nothing fancy, but they do have all the good old fashion American breakfast foods we all look for! Eggs, bacon, sausage, regular toast, french toast, pancakes, waffles and biscuits and such.. The presentation is very wholesome and warm; about as nice as you'd expect for breakfast foods. ^_^ flavor/quality: I have never really ventured too far from the breakfast foods but I've been there plenty of times and have tried all of the following with no complaints: Every thing I listed above under the selections section as well as of course hash browns, corned beef and hash, home fries, steak and my personal favorite, The Mess. [Review for ~2009] My cousin highly recommended this place - and since she's an extremely accomplished cook, we thought it must be fabulous. And in Renton! We thought it was too good to be true, and it was. I echo Christina R.'s comments about the filth. If the exterior has 1/4 inch of dirt on things and the floor and booths are so filthy you can smell them, what do you think the kitchen must be like? Despite my misgivings, I sat down with the family and ordered. I had sausage, eggs over easy, and hash browns. While not bad, they were greasy. And I ended up with a two day case of indigestion. All I have to say is that people must either not know how to cook breakfast and think this is good or they sprinkle faery dust on themselves so they believe that this is some wonderful, "mystikal" experience from days of yore. If you like paying for the lowest quality of food at high prices, come to Tommy's. This is the worst breakfast I've had in quite some time. The waitress that served us was not very friendly, and as mentioned , the food quality was extremely low. I ordered the griddle special: two pancakes, bacon, and one egg. My wife ordered the steel cut oatmeal. My pancakes were so chewy, It took quite a bit of effort to cut them with a fork. The syrup was the cheap individually packaged crap similar to what you get when you get McDonalds pancakes. My bacon baffled me, as it was certainly crispy, but not hot at all. The blueberries that came on top of my wife's oatmeal were moldy. When we sent the oatmeal back, the waitress acted annoyed, and when she reached the kitchen with the Petri dish, a bunch of angry sounding foreign language could be heard. We ordered peaches and cottage cheese, and a biscuit for my one year old daughter. The peaches they brought out were from a can, and the cottage cheese looking a little watery. When we tried to feed a piece of the biscuit to my daughter with a little of the pre packaged jelly spread on top, she spit it out. At that moment, my wife and I discovered that our one year old is smarter than both of us. By the way, is it possible to purchase a Yelp review? Knowing what I know about this place, I think it the only way it has received some of the positive reviews that it has. I never paid much attention to this place, drove by it dozens of times. My manager brought us here one morning for a meeting and boy was I surprised. Sharis, Denny's.. Get out the way. The food served here is so much better. You get hefty servings and the flavors are on point. I ordered the country fried steak, one of my all time favorites. Honestly, I don't think it has been more delicious anywhere else before. The steak was cooked just right, tender and juicy. And the creamy sauce wasn't over powering in thickness. I can't forget to mention their coffee, I don't know where they get it from but it was so smooth! I think it may have been a Kona blend but nevertheless it was good. Went here with my boyfriend because we wanted to try something besides the IHOP down the road. I've ALWAYS drove past Tommy's and contemplated if I wanted to eat here and today was the day! Our server had a great personality. By the looks of it, he knew the regulars. Also, it didn't seem like he was doing the bare minimum in the restaurant work place. I got "The Monte" and my boyfriend got the taco omelette. He described his omelette as "the best way to cram breakfast and lunch together" lol. I loved my meal and so did he! This place serves up great diner-type breakfasts with generous portions. I've been here a couple of times and really like the corned beef hash breakfast with the country potatoes, eggs and toast. The service is excellent, which is why I enjoy eating at this fast-paced establishment. The waitresses will refill your drinks and take your order faster than you can say "mahalo" (something they say there frequently). The interior is nothing fancy, but who cares. I'm there for the food. Be sure to get there early on a weekend because it can get packed. I ordered some eggs and toast for pick up at the time the restaurant opened (6am). Eggs could have been cooked more thoroughly. I'm a vegetarian and when eating the eggs, I could taste pork juices which means they either didn't clean the grill well or they are not cognizant of non-meat eaters. Went to breakfast with a friend who was visiting from college today, and had to make do with the Renton area. I took to Yelp, and discovered Tommy's Cafe. After GPSing it here, I realized I've passed this place probably 20 times but have never really noticed it because they just have a roadside sign. They definitely have a divey diner feel, but that's something I'm usually into. The inside of the place is kind of random - the tables are covered in ads laminated under the table top, and the parts of the table top that isn't covered in ads is peeling... Super weird. There's also a couple fish tanks. The staff, however, is really nice and welcoming. We were seated right away and our waitress was very attentive throughout our entire meal. I ended up getting the Eggs Benedict since I've never had it and I've wanted to try that dish forever. I feel that this probably isn't a place to try Eggs Benedict for the first time. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't that great either. The eggs were meh, the english muffin was good (I mean, you can't really mess that up), but the sauce was just... Weird, gooey melted cheddar slathered all over the eggs. Once it started to get cold, the cheese developed like a film on top and looked all leathery. Speaking of cold - our food didn't come that hot and it cooled down very quick. For the price ($9.99), I guess I got what I paid for. The hashbrowns were good, though. Just moved to the area, wanted brekkie and this place was right up the road. Excellent and attentive service. I got the 6oz top sirloin steak and eggs, and I cleaned my plate. XD I ordered it rare, and it was done perfectly! Pink center, juicy, and extremely tender, so very easy to eat. I ordered over medium on the eggs, and they were perfectly done as well. Runny yolk so I could mix it with my hash browns, which were just the right appoint of crispy. Excellent all around! Tommy's Cafe has quality diner food. Its what I'd expect. My wife had a Belgian waffle and I had biscuits and gravy. We've had better, had worse. It's so memorable that I don't really have much I can say about it in the week or so after eating it. I do remember enjoying it, and it being a good price, though. And while most reviews focus on the food, I'm going to bring light to a different issue. Their restrooms. After paying before leaving, my wife and I made sure to use the facilities before our next stops in our weekend travels. I walked into the men's room and was immediately overwhelmed by the smell of air freshners. It was trying to cover something up, but I couldn't figure out what. Of course, that's what they do, right? Sorry. As I stood at my urinal, the smells started to clear, and I could tell that it was starting to smell like a stale old dirty bathroom. My nose was recognizing the undertones of dirt and backsplash. I started to look around and realized that the only light was outside of the single stall. The light crackled like an electronic fly catcher, buzzing with the halogen sounds. The flickering made me feel like I was watching "Hostle" and I waited for something to grab me by my ankles and drag me into the stall. And I became slowly grateful that while I was relieving myself at the facilities, that I didn't have to use other facilities while I was in the bathroom. I cleaned my hands, which still felt dirty due to the condition of the bathrooms and exited, feeling like I survived a haunted house at halloween. The look on my wife's face as she exited her restroom mirrored my own, and she mumbled something about toilet paper outside the stall that I couldn't quite make out as I was waiting for the blood to drain back into my face and ears. --------------- I know that I devoted 1 paragraph of this whole review to food. I want to emphasize that the food wasn't bad, it was good food. I normally don't judge restaurants on their bathrooms, but the simple fact of the matter is this: if you can't keep your restroom clean and fresh, what about your kitchen? Or what about people washing their hands in the restroom before prepping food in the kitchen? Had I come in and used the bathroom before eating, I would have walked out. However, when I bit into the toast, the distinct flavor of mold came thru, almost making me gag. I tried a different slice, then tried a little piece that was dry, and sure enough, it was from the "butter" (you know, that fake liquid oil that gets squirted on as a substitute for real butter, or even real margarine). I don't know if they've ever cleaned that machine or changed that oil, but it certainly didn't taste like it. It was exactly what it was, a breakfast dive. Service was fast and friendly, we got seated fast, even though it was packed. The sausages and bacon were AMAZING! Everything was cooked exactly as we ordered it, eggs, pancakes. Lost the stars because the biscuits and gravy were a HUGE disappointment. The biscuit was small and flat, soaked with way too much gravy for it's thin slice. And the gravy was mostly flour, with a couple bits of chopped sausage in it. The fact that this place wasn't is a serious red flag but we decided to try. Before I tell you about the breakfast I want to be honest with you, this place can not be up to code! You can see into the kitchen when you pay up front and all the cooks were touching food with their bare hands and had no gloves, hair nets or aprons or anything! I saw a woman grabbing handfuls of sausages with her bare hands and tossing them onto plates! My boyfriend and I ordered omelette sand were given egg pancakes. They make a great breakfast. The way I see it, there are two types of breakfast restaurants: 1, predictable, and 2, unique. One is definitely not better than the other. I went to Tommy's hoping for predictable breakfast I just wanted an old-fashioned omelet with some toast. That's exactly what I got! If I wanted to see em and tofu pesto Eggs Benedict, I go somewhere else. But for an old fashioned predictable breakfast, you should totally go to Tommy's. I really enjoyed it! If you drove by Tommy's you'd probably just continue to drive right by without notice, but seriously this is an awesome place for breakfast. I wouldn't have known about this place if a friend did not have me meet her there. The food is decent and cheap. Beats the IHOP down the street. They have a generous selection for breakfast items including basic eggs and toast, pancakes, french toast, omelets the way you want it AND best of all... Country Fried Steak! Yeah baby yeah! Heart disease killer but I can count on Tommy's to have it! Their hash brown are crisp on the outside and soft inside. The ladies that wait on us (or you) are super friendly and always makes us feel like we are being served by mom or grandma. They're great about checking on you for fresh coffee. My husband and I love coming here on Sunday afternoons. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming. I always get the prime rib which is always moist and delicious. In a nutshell - Very relaxed classic diner atmosphere with great breakfast food and excellent service. I came in to order some take-out for breakfast and I was greeted by two waitresses and helped at different times by both. After I ordered two dishes, the Margrett and The Mess, I only waited 10 minutes to check out, which was cool. In the 10 minutes I was there, I did sit at one of the tables and look around. It's a relaxed atmosphere and the waitresses kind of talk to people as they walk around so it's not so much like they're serving you, but just hanging out with you. I didn't get to check out the layout but it wasn't too crowded and looks bigger on the inside than I thought it was on the outside. Everybody eating there seemed pretty happy. So I took my food with me to meet my husband and when I started eating I didn't stop until it was gone! It's not gourmet or anything but it's really good! The Mess dish, did look like an awesome mess. Hashbrowns, eggs, green pepper, sausage, etc, all mixed together with cheese on top! Tommys Cafe is a low key place to head for breakfast. I went there around 8:30am on a wednesday and ordered "The Mess" which was about 9 or 10 dollars. The waitstaff was amiable and you choose where you would like to sit from table in the middle to booths along the window. Plenty of old timers were there and I liked the fact the waiters knew the names of most of their patrons. Food was timely and delicious with the mess being a jumble of eggs, hashbrowns, onions, peppers, sausage and ham. Would head there again to check out their lunch and dinner items! read more

I had heard some good things about Tommy's Café from a coworker (and others) and decided to give it a try before my trek to Belltown on Saturday morning. The parking was pretty turnstile, with cars either parking or leaving so I felt pretty good already about this place. Now this place is definitely not a place where you would expect high quality ingredients by any means but certainly good food. This is truly a neighborhood establishment. While I perused the menu and turned down coffee, I noticed that people were either by themselves, families hanging out with each other before the big game or friend getting breakfast before a day of shopping. I decided on the Eggs Benedict with home fries only because I hadn't had them in oooh so long. I place my order and open up my book expecting at least a 15 to 20 minute wait considering the order and the amount of people. Well, about 7 minutes later (more than 5 and certainly less than 10) my order is brought to my table. Hmmmm. I am starving so I didn't complain about how not so great it looked. As I stare at my hollandaise sauce with its orange color, I realize that maybe I didn't pay attention to the menu. I didn't. The "sauce" was cheese sauce. Once again, since this is a neighborhood establishment, I didn't want to seem rude and have the waitress throw it in the garbage and just give me ham and eggs. I did manage to digest my breakfast but most likely will not be back. My waitress was so sweet but not enough for me to come back and order anything that would resemble food. I understand that I am on a different coast and taste buds are really an opinion and not actual truth but I'm sorry, it was not a good breakfast and my stomach was loaded down for the rest of the day needless to say. The thing about this place is that it's like a neighborhood diner, but located on the busy street of Rainier Ave. I would compare it to the likes of Denny's but that wouldn't be fair, as Tommy's Cafe is more like a friendly, cozy, mom-n-pop establishment. I order the "Margaret", which is biscuit and gravy with three links of sausage and hashbrown. Eggs can be added al a cart but I wanted to see how big the portions are for the dish I ordered before I add more volume to it. As far as I can tell, everything is pretty much homemade from scratch; the gravy on the biscuits is lumpy and more of a chicken gravy then the traditional cream based gravy. It's not what I'm used to. Overall, I enjoyed my dish; it didn't feel weird in my stomach. And it's true that the coffee kept coming, although it isn't great coffee so I didn't really wanted more than the first cup. I was there at 8AM and I noticed all the patrons are senior citizens, so I guess it's a great place for older people to hang out. I also checked out the whole menu and they do have a lot of varieties--french dip sandwiches, ruben sandwiches, steak and egg, prime rib, and all the traditional diner food. I stopped going to Denny's years ago, so I'm glad there's an alternative for traditional American breakfast that I can go to now. P.S. I had the buttermilk pancakes with bacon. The pancakes had a good flavor but were rubbery in texture, like the kind you get from a fast food joint for half the price. Would I go back, No! The server had a great attitude which was nice considering the mediocre food. read more
