Personally I think Tommy's Cafe is as good as it gets for decently priced breakfast food and a quick meal. I always find myself craving their dishes so I always come back! They're a family owned restaurant so you know they don't use funky things in their dishes like the huge chain restaurants. However, as much as I like their food, their service could really use a little help... The first time I came, the lady was incredibly nice. The second time, the other lady seemed really overwhelmed even though it wasn't a full house so her tone seemed a little sarcastic to me whenever I asked for something and she slammed our food and beverages onto the table. I could tell she was trying to be nice so it wasn't that big of a deal. Even so, I will continue to come back! read more

This place has survived the test of time. Could the decor be updated? Sure, but that is the charm about the place. We thought it was a perfect place to stop for a Sunday breakfast. We got in at a perfect time, before it filled up. Our order of Chicken Fried Steak with crispy hash browns (I like my hash browns crispy!) arrived at the table quickly and hot. When I get good food, I put the fork down while I chewed. The fork spent most of the meal on the side of the plate. Pleatnty of food at a great value! read more

I decided to give this place a shot because it's close to home and on the way down to WinCo. The other reviews were favorable so that sealed the deal. The service was neither fast or slow. The place wasn't crowded so I thought maybe the waitress could have been a little more speedy but she was attentive. The food was average. Nothing to rave about but good enough I'd go back. I did like the smaller sized breakfast I got. It was enough food to be full but not so much that I was stuffed. My daughter had a strawberry pancake and hash browns and it was enough for her to have a meal to take home! Same with the eggs Benedict my son had. Greeted right away when we say down and there were quite a few tables occupied. i ordered the dottie...biscuits & gravy but it left much to be desired the gravy seemed like chicken gravy with pieces of ham. The bacon was crispy & good. Hubby got the chili omelet which was mediocre but potatoes were yummy. If we come back we will definitely try something else. Not worth the $30 we spent. read more

Sunday morning after a quick work out at LA Fitness; my girl and I decided to stop by somewhere to grab a bit to eat. We wanted some breakfast and so we decided we'll try Tommy's Cafe. She's never been here, but she drives by it everyday as well. Of course, we don't have big expectations since the place is a bit old fashion. The entire place just yells out that it's a DINER! Upon walking in, we're slowly greeted and told to seat ourselves. It's not crowded since it's nearly the afternoon, so we decide to take a booth. The decor probably hasn't been changed for years... and it looks like the walls and plants haven't been dusted for a long time as well. A few cob webs, but who's gonna notice? I ordered "The Mess," which is a combination of hash browns, onions, green peppers, shredded cheese, eggs, and sausage i believe. She decides to create her own omelet and we both get a side of wheat toast. The food was decently presented. The toast was well made and very good. My food came a bit cold so I didn't get to enjoy it much. My girl's omelet was pretty good though. I wouldn't mind trying Tommy's again for dinner possibly. With all the good reviews I expected a yummy breakfast. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with sausage links and it was the worst ive ever had. The gravy was suppose to be country gravy but it was pretty much chicken stock thickened with lots of corn starch and spices with black pepper. It was terrible. I wont be coming back again. Went there for breakfast with my sister and friend from out of state. I ordered "the mess". Sister and friend ordered the chicken fried steak. The mess consisted of way too many onions. Like half of the dish was just unevenly chopped and cooked onions. The people who ordered the chicken fried steak said it didn't taste very good at all, having to mask the flavor with tabasco. There were also chunks of onion in the gravy as well, which also wasn't the traditional sausage gravy but looked like brown gravy instead. The table and chairs were sticky. The water reeked. After an exhaustive morning of Black Friday shopping we were in desperate need of breakfast and our wallets were in desperate need of something cheap. Enter Tommy's Cafe. I've driven past for years but have never checked it out. But they serve "traditional American" food - not what this snobby foodie usually enjoys. But, I was in need of something normalish after all of our running around. After some contemplation, we decided on Tommy's - none in our group had been there, but it looked like diner food, and sometimes that is just what you need. We seated ourselves in a dark booth that was just clean enough. Try to focus on your booth-mates, you don't want to take the opportunity to look around - you'll notice the 1960's decor, the dirty floors, and the not-so-infrequent flies that roam the restaurant. Our waitress was quick, nice, and funny. She quickly offered us (surprisingly good) coffee and menus. After perusing for a while we all opted for breakfasts. I went with a make-your-own omelet (you can choose any three items for $7.00 and it comes with toast and your choice of hash browns or home fries). The potatoes were crispy and delicious and my omelet inners were fresh. I guess I'd hoped for a little more of the usual Renton charm - something that was cute, homey, or just quirky - but I didn't find it. It wouldn't suprise me if I made it back just for the quality to cost ratio - but it wouldn't be a top choice if I'm looking for something foodie-licious. read more

The booths were very clean and the service was very friendly! The only concern I had was the scrambled eggs were extremely salty, and the French toast tasted like pure eggs. The bacon was cooked really well. The hot chocolate I order was 60% hot chocolate and 40% whip cream. The waitress was funny and friendly and made us feel comfortable. The fam's favorite greasy spoon for the last 20 years of Renton is no longer. =( You know what your gonna get at Tommy's it isn't 5 star food or service, but is like home cooking and friendly service. The last couple of years it's declined, portions slashed, prices increased but was always given with great service. The service is gone! My husband's last visit there just recently, for his favorite chicken fried steak was brought to him uncooked, cold & RAW on the inside THREE TIMES IN A ROW. Aren't these already pre-made? Found this place when our first choice didn't work out. This place really didn't work out either, but we were able to consume actual food here. The service was prompt, but that was about all the positives I can give. Food quality was very subpar. The chairs and tables had that sticky, unclean feeling to them. Towards the end of the meal, our party of 7 was asked if we wanted anything else. I spoke up to request a refill of water. Our server acknowledged my request, asked another in our group if they were done with their glass (she was), then passed her glass to me. A very "WTF" moment. Happy to see our check and the end of the meal, we start to review the items to begin splitting the bill. We find no description of any of the items... Just 10-15 similarly priced "To Go" items. Went their with a couple buddies last Thursday. I only order the Monte when I go. For some odd reason this time trumped the numerous other times I've had it. It beyond hit the spot. What helped immensely was that this time they had freezer jam! Usually they don't offer it - just the little jam packs. The waitress offered and I obliged. In the end, it was amazing! YES the french toast is amazing (just as other reviews state) my daughter got a kids plate for just 4.95 and it was packed! The biscuits and gravy aren't to shabby either. This is the famous Leaning Restaurant of Renton! The breakfast is standard fare, and that is a positive. Crispy, regular style hash browns. The best part is that the entire building has slumped to the east. The big aquarium must have over 1" difference in water level from one end to the other. The booths all lean down in the east. Crooked window frames, I'm not sure if the glass has had to have been replaced or somehow it hasn't broken. I imagine at the end of the day it's only necessary to pour water along the high side to clean the floor, it should all drain. Local media should do a story here. I understand breakfast is breakfast but it had no flavor. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict, it came with cheese sauce. Weird to use too but he tried it anyway. And he got the home fries and a side of biscuits and gravy. Well the eggs Benedict had no flavor and the cheese sauce was weird. I can't describe it more than weird. It was rubbery. The biscuits and gravy was so lightly seasoned it was like eating flower. He added salt and pepper and lots of hot sauce. I ordered the French toast, eggs, and sausage. French toast was decent nothing fancy my eggs were not edible and my sausage wAs good. The food was just plain. Like I said the service was amazing. Our server was friendly, fast, and helpful. Visiting Renton... my brother and I (or maybe me, with him tagging along) set out on a mission to only eat at local joints. I asked the hotel front desk where a "good local place for breakfast is" and she quickly shot back IHOP. Well, we all know that's not local...so the nice van driver suggested Tommy's- however saying he'd never been there, but the parking lot is always full. We got there around 10'ish for some grubb. We were greeted right away and told to sit wherever we wanted. We crashed into a booth next to the window. The server was a woman who quickly had coffee and cups in hand. Chatty, friendly- but real and not fake (just the way I like 'em). The place was pretty much completely empty...but quickly another group of people came in. I ordered an omelet (comes with hash browns and toast) and it was full of the selections- I opted for Denver Style (green peppers, onions, ham and cheddar cheese) and it was pretty darn tasty. My brother had the french toast and it looked equally as good. He gave it a thumbs up. We started chatting with the waitress about other places to visit in the area- and she rattled off a few...and we also made convo with a nice older lady, born and raised in Renton and a regular at Tommy's. We felt right at home being over 1000 miles away from home. We'll go back, if we get the chance! read more

Went to Tommy's for lunch on Mother's Day yesterday...my friend and I both had our kids with us so they brought us both out strawberries and whipped cream. So cute. The kids shared a grilled cheese and fries which they devoured and then asked for more. I tried the Philly cheese dip. I have had philly cheese but never with aus jus dip so that was a nice change. I was in HEAVEN. It was so good and so flavorful. Definitely would get that again. My friend got the teriyaki steak, which she always gets, and I tried a bite - YUM. Very tender, full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Their fries are seasoned and crispy and not too greasy. Reasonable prices and fast and friendly service. read more

Went here for the first time today with my boyfriend-- Our waitress Lynn was very prompt and friendly. Coffee was tasty, I tried their taco omelette (crazy I know) and it was very good! My boyfriend got the biscuits and gravy, they add onion into the gravy which was a unique twist. He said it didn't overpower the dish and that overall it was quite good. We waited a short amount of time for our food considering how many people were there, definitely less than 10 minutes. Side note: I asked to sub my hashbrowns/toast for a side salad and she let me make my own salad at the salad bar; everything was very fresh and the ranch dressing was amazing. (I'm weird about ranches) This place may not be glamorous but it's family owned and the food was good. That's truly all I really care about and I will definitely be back. :) read more

Seriously old school...and I ordered a basic - eggs (over medium), bacon, toast and hash browns. I ended up eating just my eggs, toast and some of the hash browns. The bacon actually freaked me out because it looked like it had been partially cooked and then stored to be warmed up for later. That and the fact it was coated in a layer of grease that actually made my stomach churn 5 minutes later. I'm all for greasy diner fare, but after that breakfast, my stomach was in turmoil for the rest of the day. Would I say it's food poisoning? We LOVE this place. Family owned and operated for generations, this is a landmark in downtown Renton/Rainer area. We love to get breakfast here. It's classic dinner food with a home cooked feel. Crispy bacon is the best. We also loved the chicken fried steak. Best place to sit Is in front of the cool fish tank. The parking lot is always full, but the inside of the restaurant is large so you can always get a table. read more

This is a regular American diner on rainier. My bf and I decided to try it instead of going to IHOP or sharis since it was close to where I live. The food was alright. Nothing super special. We both ordered steak and eggs. The coffee was okay. Been going to Tommy's a couple times a year for many years. Never was our first choice. But it was an ok local place. Today is our First time since the new owners took over..VERY UNIMPRESSED... Same worn seating and tables. Two Asian ladies wandering around but not waiting tables, just watching and doing a little table bussing. A VERY Nice but overworked waitress finally took our breakfast order. The order came quickly. I had pancakes, and eggs with sausage. BLAND TASTELESS CAKES with a flavor of grill that needed cleaning. Syrup in little packets-Thin and weak flavor..eggs were eggs... sausages were fair with a chip of bone. Mrs had a scramble dish called a mess. It was a mess. Raw veggies in with a tiny portion of ham. Toast came with so little butter we had to debate if there was any at all. There was so it was NOT a mistake. Waitress ask how our food was as usual . I told her. She was apologetic and said the owners wanted feedback. She was the single redeeming part of the experience. Kudos to her. I hope she got the whole tip! Today, we'd just come from another restaurant where we waited with no service, so getting greeted here and followed to our table of choice with waters and menus was refreshing. Our son likes the huge cinnamon roll. I took a chance on a Yelp recommendation of biscuits n gravy. OMG! Delish! I wanted to lick the plate clean! Only two drawbacks: Food can be a bit greasy so you may want to just plan on going home right after your meal. Lower-quality condiments like jams and margarine, and limited choice of sweeteners. Went for a Saturday breakfast, and very "meh" (save for the coffee - the coffee was awful). two eggs and bacon, perfectly serviceable. Belgian waffle with whipped cream and fruit, less so (fake whipped cream, fruit was more a thick fruited fructose syrup). Decor isn't "old diner kitsch" so much as just "extremely dated". Again - perfectly serviceable. Nothing save the coffee was stand-out awful, and the service was fairly quick. But overall - exceptionally... meh. read more
