I love a good cup or bowl of chili having went to Xavier in Cincinnati. I have heard of the show Mash. My family had been here previously and this was my first time and I really enjoyed it!! I picked the bowl size and it was plenty!! A very filling bowl of chili. I'm glad we stopped in. A fun little spot. A lot memorabilia around the restaurant. The menu was labeled well for vegetarian and gluten free. The staff was very quick and helpful in pointing out the gluten free labels next to respective dishes. Someone came around and asked how things were tasting. We said great and asked about the buns and where we could find any specific ones. She came back with a folder with a map and big long list of names and their profession. Actors, musicians and local TV people for the Toledo area. I can definitely see myself coming back here. Get the cabbage roll. Seriously - it was the best thing at Tony Packo's. Absolutely delicious. We'll crave more cabbage rolls. The chili was tasty. Nice spice, but not too much. The hot dog with chili was good - although I did not enjoy the tradition of serving you only 1/2 of a Hungarian hot dog cut lengthwise in half. (The tradition of a 1/2 hotdog dates back to when the chain was founded during the Great Depression - they cut the dogs in half so they could sell them for only five cents. Now that they're $3.59 each I'd like my whole hotdog please...). Service was friendly. The strudel desserts (apple or cherry) were both very nice. Atmosphere - excellent. Located in a historic area of Toledo. (We went to "the original location"). The restaurant is way bigger inside than it appears to be from the outside. It is a little dark and seating is crowded. We were warmly greeted when we entered and the customer friendly attentiveness continued throughout our dining experience. There is a display of celebrity and notables autographs throughout the restaurant in the form of wrapped hotdog buns (not sure what is used). There is a pretty cool, small souvenir shop with reasonably priced food, clothing and other, typical souvenir items. Service- also excellent. Our server was very attentive and pleasant. In fact she was the best part of our experience. Food - below average. There were three issues for me. I ordered a cup of, chicken dumpling soup, which had very small sized dumplings (and few of them), very little chicken and was mostly broth and vegetables. I also ordered the hot dog combo. The dog was a decent size and the bun fresh. However, the dog was buried (not even smothered) in a very strong tasting chili sauce. Consequently, I could barely taste the hot dog. It is also important to note that the dog itself is encased in a very strong casing, which is not my favorite type of hot dog. Finally, I ordered the Mac n Cheese for my side, which was dry and served lukewarm. Overall - not worth a second visit for me. This is a Mecca for hot dog lovers, of which I am one. Although I was disappointed, I am glad that I dined there and perhaps your experience may be more positive. Therefore, if you have not gone there, please do not let my review dissuade you from going there. I really wanted to love this place because it is "the" place to go for hot dogs. I have had friends talk about it for years and since we were close by, we had to try it. I liked the atmosphere and all the signed buns on the walls. Tables are tight and we became chummy with everyone around us because you could hear their conversation. Our server was wonderful! She had a bubbly personality and was always checking on us. She had asked if we had eaten here before and when we said it was our first time, she took the time to explain the restaurant and the menu. Unfortunately, my stars are on the food rating and not the service, because it would have been a five for service. I had a bowl of chili and an original hot dog. The chili was just too spicy for me. It was served with a bowl of oyster crackers which helped cut it, but I just didn't care for it. The hot dog came with their sauce, mustard and onions. I had no idea what to expect, but that first "snap" of the hot dog wasn't for me. Fortunately the sauce didn't taste as spicy, and maybe it was because of the mustard and onions, although there really wasn't a lot on it. I know this is a personal preference, but I don't like snappy hot dogs and spicy chili. Others around seemed to enjoy their food. It was nice to have the manager come around and check on us as well. When passing through Toledo Ohio and asking yourself... 'Self, where do people go for an iconic meal in Toledo?' The answer is Packo's! Tony Packo's that is. The original location (the one I suggest btw) is located exactly where you would think that a good old restaurant would be located. Right smack in the middle of a run down neighborhood that is surrounded by industrial businesses and seemingly abandoned cargo ships. But don't let that stop you from finding this little Toledo gem. They only have a few options on their menu, but my motto has always been, 'Do a few things and do them well and people will come back.' And boy do they do them well! Hot Dogs, pirogies, fried pickles, stuffed cabbage with meat (DELICIOUS) and Paprika Chicken with Hungarian Dumplings. We ordered pickles, pirogies (which came with the cabbage) and the Paprika Chicken. Everything was good. Some things were VERY good. The cabbage is THE BOMB! I don't know what they put in it or how they make it, but it doesn't taste like cabbage. You just THINK you don't like cabbage. TRY IT. We are so glad that we veered off of our cross country road trip to discover what Toledo had to offer in the way of an interesting meal. But don't take my word for it. We ordered the fried pickles based on other reviews as well as our sweet waitress' suggestion. Yum. The pickle slices are thicker than most places. The spicy ketchup is yum in your tum. So we're on our way back from Sandusky and getting close to Toledo, I say to my girlfriend, 'where do you want to have lunch'? And she says 'well, there's Tony Packo's', and I say 'I knew you'd say that'. And I did. So I look up the original and we pull in 11:30ish, maybe closer to noon. It feels like a corner restaurant in an ethnic community, and it's the only restaurant around. The bar was great and the first thing I got to enjoy was the Tony Packo IPA by Earnest Brew Works. Wow...maybe not best I've had but they did right by this place, it was very good. As we sat, the place filled up, obviously very popular, also obvious by all the signed hot dog buns all over the wall. Yep, they got the movers and shakers to sign buns they put on the wall. I'd love to go back and try the other food they serve, like the roast beef sandwich covered in gravy, but of course we ordered their original dog and fries. First the fries - they were good, hot and crispy, not award winning but who needs that? Perfectly enjoyable. As for the dog? Delicious. They do the chili part on the darker side, I don't quite know how to describe it beyond that, but the dog is good, crisp bite and juicy, and the chili part is good with onions and mustard. Is it the best I've had? I don't know, I'm not a Coney dog kind of person but I'd order it again and am actually looking forward to it. This is one of the rare tourist places that live up to the hype! I first ate here in the late 80's and stopped for dinner while passing through Toledo. The food is still amazing, the atmosphere is fun, and the staff is EXCELLENT! Even though I rarely eat raw onions, these "dogs" are meant for chili and onions and truly delicious when served that way. Well let me say first I wasn't a huge fan of the fried pickles and peppers, but not fried served with the meal they were much better. It was around $5 for like 7 fried pieces of pickles which is pretry expensive in my opinion. The hot dog comes with fresh pickles which were more than enough so I wouldn't order the fried pickles again. The pickles pack a PUNCH. I honestly wasn't expecting them to have so much flavor lol. Another unique restaurant. We ate here earlier tonight. If you're in Toledo it's a must. They have incased buns on the wall with autographs of celebrities on the cases. They use fake buns now days. Holy Toledo! Corporal Maxwell Klinger couldn't be any more right about this place! When you walk to the door it automatically gives off that "this place is fucking cool"vibe. For my maiden trip to Tony Packo's I decided to opt for the world famous chicken paprikash. I now know why it's world-famous. Don't get me wrong, it's not homemade but this is some of the best paprikash I have ever had at a restaurant. They did not skimp on the paprikash gravy, which was thick dark and had a strong taste of the smoked paprika. Delicious! The spatzels aka "dumplings" were fluffy and delicious as well. The place is very old yet kept very clean and the Decour is very classic. The service was top-notch and speedy quick to get me my food. An added bonus: they had high school hockey on the TV at the bar where I was sitting. That alone could make any meal seem great. Also worth noting was the eclectic mix of people dining here. Young and old both dining and hanging at the bar. It is really cool to see all of the autographed hotdog buns from over the years displayed throughout the place. read more

Museum of Hungarian Toledo with all the Old World Trim and American Patriotism in every nook and corner of this fabulous landmark. 80's oldies on sound system reminded me of the show MASH where the character Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr) would harken back to his hometown and favorite dive, Tony Packo's! I had the recommended Hot Dog Combo with Hungarian dumplings covered in chili for the side. Hot dog is actually a slice of sausage and dumplings are actually spiral macaroni (but homemade). We were really excited to try this place. I'm from Dayton Ohio and he's from Detroit Michigan so I figured this would be somewhere in the middle coney wise. The chili was bland and not very flavorful. The cucumber salad is cucumbers marinated in whatever they mix coleslaw with? The German potato salad was not what I expected. My chili Mac came with onions when I requested none. Our server was great. Management was great. We were greeted and they took care of our issues. OMG, Max Klinger sure knows good eatin'! Here in Detroit we have the best Coney Dogs in the world. But just a short jaunt down I-75 to Toledo is one of the iconic dining spots in all of Ohio. But you MUST go to the original on Front Street for the ambience, the autographed buns, and the incredible "Hungarian" dogs with their special hot dog sauce, which apparently they put on everything. Makes sense to me. Their chili is to die for - my wife says it's her all-time favorite anywhere, and she's a chili fanatic. I agree that it's REALLY good! The fries and fabulous & their pickles have a perfect kick to them. They also have stuffed cabbage & pierogi, but it's impossible to not go with the dogs. Warning - they deep fry their pierogi, too, instead of sautéed in "brown" butter, so if you're Polish, be warned. The ENTIRE staff couldn't be nicer.
