So we're on our way back from Sandusky and getting close to Toledo, I say to my girlfriend, 'where do you want to have lunch'? And she says 'well, there's Tony Packo's', and I say 'I knew you'd say that'. And I did. So I look up the original and we pull in 11:30ish, maybe closer to noon. We walk inside and this is old world charm, not a small place and basically you walk up to a counter, order, get your food and go sit, or...you sit at the bar, which we did. The ambiance? It feels like a corner restaurant in an ethnic community, and it's the only restaurant around. The bar was great and the first thing I got to enjoy was the Tony Packo IPA by Earnest Brew Works. Wow...maybe not best I've had but they did right by this place, it was very good. As we sat, the place filled up, obviously very popular, also obvious by all the signed hot dog buns all over the wall. Yep, they got the movers and shakers to sign buns they put on the wall. I'd love to go back and try the other food they serve, like the roast beef sandwich covered in gravy, but of course we ordered their original dog and fries. First the fries - they were good, hot and crispy, not award winning but who needs that? Perfectly enjoyable. As for the dog? Delicious. They do the chili part on the darker side, I don't quite know how to describe it beyond that, but the dog is good, crisp bite and juicy, and the chili part is good with onions and mustard. Is it the best I've had? I don't know, I'm not a Coney dog kind of person but I'd order it again and am actually looking forward to it. If you are a fan of M*A*S*H or not, this place was mentioned at least on one episode if not more by corporal Klinger, I will say that I have never even though of eating here except my son and I were driving up to Toledo for something we bought off of Craigslist (Long drive from Cincy, but worth it). I would drive back now just for the food. We ordered the fried pickles and peppers and then we both ordered the feast. Well let me say first I wasn't a huge fan of the fried pickles and peppers, but not fried served with the meal they were much better. The Hungarian Hot Dog was very good but the cabbage roll was my favorite. Then we both ordered dessert which was very good as well. Then we walked into the gift shop and bought way too much stuff, but it was worth it. I would gladly come back here to eat anytime. read more

This is one of the rare tourist places that live up to the hype! I first ate here in the late 80's and stopped for dinner while passing through Toledo. The food is still amazing, the atmosphere is fun, and the staff is EXCELLENT! Even though I rarely eat raw onions, these "dogs" are meant for chili and onions and truly delicious when served that way. Have been going to Packos since the 80s. Food used to be worth the 2 hour drive but last week may be our last. We hadn't been there for a couple years so being in the area we stopped. We always get the beef Manhattan with natural gravy. This time the beef was dry, had to ask for more gravy twice. I usually get beef Manhattan, mashed potatos, German Potato salad and baked beans and hot dog. No beans. Said "seasonal". Dog sauce was different and the bun stale. It seems to pretty popular and there seems to be a lot of history so we decided to make a pit stop. I ordered a. original hungarian hotdog and a side of fried pickles. It was around $5 for like 7 fried pieces of pickles which is pretry expensive in my opinion. The hot dog comes with fresh pickles which were more than enough so I wouldn't order the fried pickles again. The pickles pack a PUNCH. I honestly wasn't expecting them to have so much flavor lol. I had always wanted to stop here, and finally had the opportunity on a business trip last week. Everything was great. I love Diners, Drive in's,and Dives kind of places and this was on point. The chicken chili had big meaty chunks of perfectly cooked chicken. Coney dog was awesome! Spicy Smokey chili with a great hot dog that snapped with crispness. Perfect! Another unique restaurant. We ate here earlier tonight. If you're in Toledo it's a must. They have incased buns on the wall with autographs of celebrities on the cases. They use fake buns now days. Any and everybody has ate here including 5 presidents. Their chili is amazing! The macaroni n cheese is a must too! Kids would love this place. After placing our order our server Brittany C. told us to feel free to walk around and take photos. When we were in gift shop she came in to let us know our food was on the table. Holy Toledo! Corporal Maxwell Klinger couldn't be any more right about this place! When you walk to the door it automatically gives off that "this place is fucking cool"vibe. For my maiden trip to Tony Packo's I decided to opt for the world famous chicken paprikash. I now know why it's world-famous. Don't get me wrong, it's not homemade but this is some of the best paprikash I have ever had at a restaurant. They did not skimp on the paprikash gravy, which was thick dark and had a strong taste of the smoked paprika. Delicious! The spatzels aka "dumplings" were fluffy and delicious as well. The place is very old yet kept very clean and the Decour is very classic. The service was top-notch and speedy quick to get me my food. An added bonus: they had high school hockey on the TV at the bar where I was sitting. That alone could make any meal seem great. Also worth noting was the eclectic mix of people dining here. Young and old both dining and hanging at the bar. It is really cool to see all of the autographed hotdog buns from over the years displayed throughout the place. read more

Museum of Hungarian Toledo with all the Old World Trim and American Patriotism in every nook and corner of this fabulous landmark. 80's oldies on sound system reminded me of the show MASH where the character Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr) would harken back to his hometown and favorite dive, Tony Packo's! I had the recommended Hot Dog Combo with Hungarian dumplings covered in chili for the side. Hot dog is actually a slice of sausage and dumplings are actually spiral macaroni (but homemade). We were really excited to try this place. I'm from Dayton Ohio and he's from Detroit Michigan so I figured this would be somewhere in the middle coney wise. The chili was bland and not very flavorful. The cucumber salad is cucumbers marinated in whatever they mix coleslaw with? The German potato salad was not what I expected. My chili Mac came with onions when I requested none. Our server was great. Management was great. We were greeted and they took care of our issues. OMG, Max Klinger sure knows good eatin'! Here in Detroit we have the best Coney Dogs in the world. But just a short jaunt down I-75 to Toledo is one of the iconic dining spots in all of Ohio. But you MUST go to the original on Front Street for the ambience, the autographed buns, and the incredible "Hungarian" dogs with their special hot dog sauce, which apparently they put on everything. Makes sense to me. Their chili is to die for - my wife says it's her all-time favorite anywhere, and she's a chili fanatic. I agree that it's REALLY good! The fries and fabulous & their pickles have a perfect kick to them. They also have stuffed cabbage & pierogi, but it's impossible to not go with the dogs. Warning - they deep fry their pierogi, too, instead of sautéed in "brown" butter, so if you're Polish, be warned. The ENTIRE staff couldn't be nicer. Came back for lunch while in the area. Came back on Friday -during the lunch rush. Walked in and they were serving cafeteria style. The gal told me they do this for the lunch rush, but it wasn't faster than being seated and having a waitress. We stood and waited in a line to then give our orders to two different gals, then going to a third to get run up. You get most food immediately, but anything fried has to be delivered. And the beverages are self-serve too. Sure this concept won't work, but it's execution was a hot mess. In addition, we got to listen to the servers SCREAM orders for new customers. Good time at Tony Packo's tonight! This is a kid friendly restaurant. The autographed buns all over the walls were fun to peruse and find familiar names. We ordered the feast and a side of mac & cheese and split it. So much food. The Hot Dog was actually some kind of sausage and only half. Odd but tasty. The chili sauce on the dog was unlike any I've had elsewhere. The cabbage roll was good with a sweet flavor to the cabbage and sauce. Good old fashioned food. I didn't try the chili since it was spicy. It came with oyster crackers. The Mac & cheese was creamy and delicious and mostly devoured by our toddler. The service was good but I found the food just average. I feel this is the type of food you love or don't. I found nothing wrong with the food and it was prepared just as expected. I personally wasn't satisfied with my meal of a hot dog, chili, and Mac and cheese due to my own personal taste. The dog was as expected. The chili is as good but we were unexpectedly charged extra for the sour cream and cheese. The Mac and cheese was nothing special so I would pick another side. This is one of the rarest places I have ever been in. Every tile and lamp gives the atmosphere a rich gaze into history. It's claim to fame lies in the 1970's war comedy M*A*S*H where one in f the main characters played by Jamie Farr. This place has lasted almost a century and once you sit down inside its clear why. Rob and Amy helped us out, we have a son with a serious allergy to artificial ingredients and anything that goes in front of him must be checked and that's not an easy task for an allergy that is as prevalent as gluten allergy's were in the 90's. We're super impressed that the manager took his time coming back close to a dozen times trying to find foods that my son was able to eat. I appreciate the time and patience that takes especially since it was pretty busy and Rob took that extra time that is a hallmark of exceptional service and gave us several great ideas of where to go while we are visiting Toledo OH. The food was amazing and homemade and the hot dog sauce is classic. Great variety of American and Hungarian cuisine that even kids like. I will definitely return! Eating a Packo's dog really has changed my life! Covid safety is definitely a priority.
