I dined at Top Spice 2nights ago. The Tofu& Veggie soup was excellent. I also had Nam Sod made with ground chicken. It was totally delish!! Things went south when I asked for a 2nd wedge of cabbage. My server came back and informed me that it would cost me an additional $2.00 for a 2" wedge of cabbage. I dined at TopSpice on Piedmont for several years and was never asked to pay for extra cabbage. I won't be back. read more

We used to go here fairly frequently, but hadn't been in a while. Last night, we were really disappointed with the flat flavors of our dishes. My husband and I both ordered items that should have had some zing (spicy basil chicken and veggie hotpot) but were just bland and watery. The roti was too crispy and lacking the chewy center that just melds so nicely with the sauce. Service was never really a strong suit, but our wait staff barely engaged... they could have been robots. It's always been hit-or-miss with Thai food for me. However, THIS PLACE has the best Thai food EVER! My jasmine rice was very soft and fluffy and the curry?! Don't even get me started. It was very savory with a hint of spice. The flavors were amazing. The catfish was deep-fried perfectly, honestly it just melts in your mouth. The vegetables in the dish were delicious too! I had to ask for a second helping of rice so that I could eat as much as I could. I wish this place was back home because because I'd love to come here often to try everything else on the menu. I placed an order through Yelp/Grubhub for a late weekday lunch and the food was ready when I arrived. I had the Chicken Coconut Soup which was $5.50 and the Pad Thai with Shrimp for $16.95, both pretty decent portions. I thought the soup was good, and about what you would expect for decent Thai. The pad thai had all of the necessary components and I would say it was just okay. Not bad by any means, but not outstanding or memorable. read more

Nothing great about our experience last night. The quality of their food has changed for the worse. We ordered the lettuce wraps as an appetizer. The lettuce served with the order was the core of the lettuce...very difficult to enjoy the filling like a wrap. I used to LOVE the midtown location, but after they closed I have been sorely missing my roti canai fix. I found myself in the area last week and immediately called for a pick up order. Nothing is the same as the other location. The roti was good, but instead of a large container of curry with potatoes and chicken, it came with two small containers. One white sauce that was a little sour tasting, and a brown container that lacked flavor. I also ordered chicken pad thai. When I paid at the counter, I read the description of pad thai and saw it came with tofu. I told the guy at the counter that I didn't realize it had tofu in it, but that I didn't want any tofu. He told me, "They are cooking it now, just pick it out." I thought that was kind of rude.. I didn't get a highly specific dish. The pad thai sauce was just not good. Almost had a ketchup flavor to it, not at all peanut or tamarind flavored. The noodles also seemed over-cooked. Thai food is my favorite and I haven't even brought myself to eat the leftovers. Gone there a few times now and the food is always delicious and hot. I love spicy food and they always air it jut enough spicy for me to enjoy. I always get the pad thai and spring rolls and you can't go wrong with either one of those. The staff there was nice but don't really pay attention to you. We had to keep waiting to ask for our check when we were done because the staff members were too busy socializing with each other right next to our table rattan than just looking at us for a second so we can tell them we were ready to leave. I have not been to Top Spice in years. I actually used to come quite frequently when I knew someone that lived right near the restaurant but I haven't really had a reason to go. It's not a good area to be in around traffic time. It can make you a little crazy. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines. I remember this place being pretty good and was hoping that was still the case. The restaurant has a nice bar area and lots of cozy tables. They do you not offer a kids menu. My daughter is so easy to please from a noodle standpoint so she got a side of noodles for only three dollars. I really like the Thai basil rolls so I started with that. I'm used to the thinner rice paper and this was a thicker wrap but still pretty good. I asked for peanut sauce but had to ask for a side of Sriracha because the sauce was a little boring. I also ordered the chicken satay. The chicken was really good. It was very moist and flavorful. It came with a peanut sauce and again I just put some hot sauce in it to enhance the flavor. I really thought they did a good job with the satay and it was one of the better ones I've ever had at a Thai restaurant. I would definitely come back but it would have to be a strategic plan. Traffic can be really bad and not area so I probably come and an off hour but the good news is they were open all day the day I went, which is another plus for those of you who get hungry at like 3 PM. This Thai restaurant is a great selection in the Toco Hills area. Great selection of dishes in the menu and the food quality is excellent. I ordered the chicken, scallops, and shrimp bowl which was coated in a very flavorful spiced Thai sauce. Delicious!! The service is fast and friendly. I ordered pick up, but the inside of the restaurant looked well decorated. It's more decorated than the typical Asian restaurants I go to. Quite dim. I ordered the pad see ew, which did not taste bad -- tasted like Ho fun (dry beef noodle?). It's not necessarily what I was expecting but it was fine, just more Chinese than Thai.. but it is a Malay/Thai place, lol. I ordered it with chicken and the chicken was extremely dry. Warning: Their Thai tea is extremely extremely sweet. I'm going to have to dilute it to make it drinkable. Took two sips and couldn't drink more. I also typically get my milk teas at 80-100% sweetness compared to all of my friends and I thought this was wayyyy too much sugar. I think I'll have to try their Malaysian dishes next time to really gauge how I feel about their menu items. read more

What you need to know: It's not cheap, don't don't expect regular Malaysian/Thai food prices. Try and dine in sometime, they have a beautiful restaurant. The Penang Curry is amazing! I've been coming to Top Spice off and on for over a decade and I have yet to be disappointed. While it is a little pricier than I like to pay for Malaysian food, ever since Penang switched owners, Top Spice has been the "top" Malaysian in town, and this original location in Toco Hills always does well. Food: Always top quality. My go-to in the Penang Curry because it's rich from the coconut milk/cream, has a lot of flavor, and has bell peppers which I love. The Penang Char Kway Teow is always great as well and I love their coconut soup. Never had a bad item here whether for lunch or dinner, it's always solid. Ambience: Their restaurant is amazing. Great decorations that pay a tribute to Malaysia giving the whole place a very authentic feel while still remaining upper scale casual. Service: For the most part the service here is always friendly and prompt, however I have had some times where the service is a little lackluster. Given their food quality though, this is never a bad thing. Parking: Being in the Toco Hills shopping center, parking is ample. However at busy periods it can be difficult to find parking closer to Top Spice given all the different places in this center, so be prepared to park a little further away than you would like. Price: It definitely is a little more expensive than most Thai/Malaysian places I've been to. Meals for my family that would normally cost $30, usually end up costing around $40-$50 here. So it's not more expensive by much, and their quality more than justifies it. All in all, I'm a huge fan, and whenever I have a craving for Malaysian and don't mind splurging a bit, Top Spice is my go-to and will continue to be. read more

I am a repeat customer and after many, many orders over many years, I am tired of the following-- and this is my reason for 3 stars, despite how good the food tastes (and it IS good; HOWEVER): 1) The past couple of times that I've ordered takeout from them, the portion sizes of the fried rice varies. This time, once again, for one of my fried rice dishes, it was noticeably less rice in the container. Like, a 4th of the container still needed to be filled. For the high price of the food, this should never be the case. For both of the fried rice dishes, I got shrimp and they have apparently changed portion size of the shrimp: 5 pieces, which does not seem enough for the price of the dish. 2) What's worse than inconsistency is not being able to rectify a matter without dealing with a rude worker. When I've called about a previous order, I got so much pushback from whoever was on the phone. So, this time, I didn't even bother to call back because it is exhausting when they refuse to hear you out, arguing back to the customer. It's nonsensical. 3) If you order directly from the restaurant and not a delivery service, expect for the worker to nearly DEMAND A TIP for the driver. This is extremely frustrating and a huge problem too considering....... 4) EVERY SINGLE TIME, the delivery drivers call me about 5 minutes out trying to finagle their way out of coming up to my apartment to deliver, which is what they are SUPPOSED to do. It's called DELIVERY. We are NOT supposed to come downstairs and meet them unless WE want to. This driver again tonight did the same thing and they try to put the customer on a guilt trip, but I stand my ground. It's very disgusting and not right at all for them to do this, especially after pretty much threatening you for a tip. A tip is voluntary and should not be required; they make you feel like you must tip to order and that is NOT RIGHT. I don't feel right paying that upfront not knowing what type of delivery service I'm going to get-- and 9/10, it's not been good. Top Spice would get 5 stars from me if it weren't for these issues-- and if it weren't for the food, I'd give them 2 stars. They need to realize that customer service is just as important as the food. read more

They upped their prices really high, they have sweet sticky rice that they can either serve with or without, mango and in the past without mango was always a five dollar difference now every time my husband tries to order they will tell him that he cannot order it without mango, making a small order of sticky rice almost $10 compared to the 395 that was affordable read more

Top Spice is the restaurant equivalent of your reliable high school group project partner friend. She just delivers solid Thai food, and I'm hardly ever disappointed. In particular, I like ordering their pad see ew and green curry, but I sometimes get their pad thai. I just like thick noodles which is why I prefer the pad see ew. But y'all, if you're reading this, I'm saying this as your new Yelp friend: don't be sleeping on the green curry. Order it. Right now. Ugh it's just so creamy and yummy and not too pungent the way yellow curries can be. It's just so aromatic and herby YUM thinking about it makes me drool. Even though I've just raved about their food, if I'm giving Top Spice's food alone a rating, I'd say it's a high 3, low 4, but the nostalgia value of having Top Spice in my life as a college aged female who needs Thai food every few months to treat myself or console myself about school or to satisfy a craving boosts it to a 5. I love this dish. The crispy shrimp chips, the sweet and salty meat, the refreshing cucumber...perfect combination! Great for sharing. I had the spicy squid. Excellent squid. Tender and delicious. Pretty good! I went as they were about to close, which I think is the majority of my issues, but it is otherwise a quality Asian restaurant. I stuck to the familiar with a Cashew Chicken, which was in a light brown sauce and heavy on the cooked bell pepper. I find they have a bit of a weird rubbery texture, but that isn't Top Spice's fault. I do find myself more of a fan of the Cantonese style though. There is a lot of Malaysian flavor that I'm not experienced with or qualified to discuss. We also got beef Pad See Ew which was quite good! We ordered drinks, and the drink menu is very American. These came out after the meal... the waitress completely forgot to bring them out for us. They're big, they're decently made, but it kinda sucks that we had to wait as long as we did. I had to actually ask her where on earth they were since everything was brought out. Overall, this place isn't bad, but we got relatively neglectful service. Definitely worth checking out, but there seems to be a lot of Thai in Atlanta. read more

We were getting late for dinner for my husbands birthday dinner and ended up at Top Spice with my family. Usually Top Spice has good food but today the food, service, experience were horrific. We started off with getting thai iced tea which was almost white and mostly milk. They put very little tea and all milk. We told them initially didn't agree then took then back and got a soda instead, we ordered our food. I always get the same spice level here and I like spicy food but this time in my drunken noodles it was like they accidentally dumped paprika on there or put it double not sure but I could barely put it in my mouth, I called the server and they were in denial. They did not care to admit to their mistake. Then they took my food and never got me any replacement so basically I had to just share some dinner with family members. I can't imagine any restaurant doing this or even apologizing or manager coming to see what they can do to make it better. Honestly save your time and money and don't come here!! Take out maybe otherwise no!! Also service was terrible when soda would finish or anything like that no refills until we called. Ruined our day and dinner !! read more

Altogether solid, the food was quite good, portion sizes were generous, the menu and decor was fun. A little bit on the pricy side. We got the Kari Ayam Kering (Malaysian Chicken Curry) and the Pad Thai, both of which were enough were tasty and filling enough to take home a box of leftovers for dinner the following night. I'm not familiar with Malaysian food but the chicken curry was all around nice, the potatoes were nicely saturated with sauce but not soggy, the chicken was pretty standard fare, the sauce had a very nice subtle heat to it; i'm not a big fan of spicy food where it feels like it's overshadowing the flavor and this hit the sweet spot perfectly - it was rather like Japanese curry but with a noticeably different seasoning. A tiny bit pricy for me but a very solid dish. The pad thai was fine, not super exciting, a little more on the wet side in terms of the noodles being pretty saturated with the peanut sauce, if you like that sort of thing. It wasn't unlike most any other pad thai i've had but I would feel safe ordering it again if I was in the mood for it. Service was fine, delayed a tiny bit because they were busy, but nothing to really complain about. Their tables are super cute, they have little glass compartments inside showing what I assume to be their signature spices, including star anise and some other stuff I didn't look too closely at. Really good Pad Thai, but I found it a little on the bland side. I was surprised and pleased by the number of large shrimp that were hiding in there. My wife and I are huge fans of Thai food, and Top Spice is our favorite Thai restaurant. We have been eating here almost weekly for four years (we also go to the Midtown/Piedmont Ave location, but this one is where the owners are based and is better). We get a lot of family and friends visiting from out of town, and we always take them here. They've always been pleased and they often want to dine here multiple times during one visit. Also, friends that have moved out of Atlanta tell me they miss eating here. The decor is pretty good, and the service is typical Thai-restaurant quality (which means passable). But the quality of the food and the flavors is what sets this place apart from other Thai restaurants. I order a wide variety of dishes, but my favorites are spicy basil fried rice, Masaman curry, pad thai, and spicy basil leaves. The chicken lettuce wraps are also an excellent appetizer. The restaurant is usually pretty crowded, and draws a lot of students from nearby Emory. There are a couple of negatives though. They charge for pretty much any modification to your dish (want mushrooms added? get ready to pay an extra $1). Also, like many restaurants, they have started to decrease portion sizes. Overall though, Top Spice is still an excellent restaurant and will be getting our business for many years to come. read more

Ordered lunch here and have many times before. I got pad see u and basil chicken. Basil chicken was good, no issues there. My pad see u was BURNT. Black on noodles, chicken and vegetables. Barely any sauce and was so dry!! This wasn't a small amount- the cook knowingly forgot about this and burnt it and still served it. So disappointed. Every time I come to Atlanta, I'm surprised by the variety of restaurants it has. This Thai place was very good. We started off with the basil rolls, they normally have shrimp but I don't eat seafood, so they were able to make it without, which was nice. The meals are a little pricey for dinner but you do get huge portions. I got chicken with a ginger sauce and it was very delicious, I'd come back just for that dish.
