We have a maintenance contract with Dial One Sonshine for our HVAC and water heater. They have…read morealways been good at calling for the regular maintenance and have been very thorough in their maintenance and noting any problems and letting us know. This time, inspecting the water heater (which is 11 years old), most things checked out as OK, but with their camera that goes into the tank, there was a lot of mineral deposits noted and those deposits are affecting the capacity and the ability to be effective. They said I should get a new water heater. It is still usable, but could go out anytime, and there could have problems in leaks. I was given the cost of replacing our heater. I had not planned on it, but in considering the likelihood of upcoming problems, decided to do so. They worked with me on the price, and it was installed the next day. The technicians who came out to check and do maintenance were James and Jesse. As I said, they were very thorough to check the heater, check the water flow throughout the house, and in their communications. I would have them come to my house again. The person who installed it was Allen and he installed it well, gave me all new needed attachments, and even after he was done, I asked him to do one more thing. Without hesitation he did that, which took another 20 minutes. He did everything right. I would have him come back if I needed something else installed. I am very pleased with Dial One Sunshine and with the people sent out to do their service calls and work. I recommend the company and those workers.

He turned it off and said he had to wait until it thawed. He cam back out the next day and said the unit they installed just 5 yrs ago obviously has a leak and could be diagnosed for leak, but that they suggest replacing the whole thing, cooler and heater for $18k!! Saying that even if diagnostics and repair of leak, there is no guarantee and may end up costing more. Another option, replace the cooling system only and not the heater, would be only $14k!! Upon further inquisition, and explaining, the unit they installed just 5 yrs ago is expected to last longer than 5 yrs, they tried explaining it's like a car, sometimes they last a long time and sometimes, they don't. But hello, they have lemon laws! They went on the further explain that they were under new ownership with new employees and all and that they had to replace the unit and at our cost, they would not keep warranty, saying that it was not under some California state regulations anymore. Then said they will talk with new owners and get back to us. We sent him on his way and got a second opinion first thing next day. With over 30 yrs experience, quickly identified the leak, and the problem was fixed in 10 minutes at a very minimal cost!! Turned on, working, blowing cold air! I learned SO many things today about a/c units from him that I never knew!! He explained about the capacitor--been hearing that word for years but never knew it meant something sort of like a battery in the condenser unit (that big metal cube thing that sits in your backyard that powers all of the life-sustaining cold air in the house that keeps you from certain death during a heatwave...LOL!l), flushing the drain lines etc. Also learned how to do simple things like opening the drawer for the filter--DUH! I'm so lame, I'd been trying to open the big flat panel to put in a new filter for some time but gave up --then the other day I realized the drawer on the bottom was the thing with the filter, but because I'm arthritic, I didn't think I could pull it out. Alan made it real simple for me and showed me there's a latch on it that you squeeze and voila!--it just opens! For a year, I haven't been able to master that one simple trick--LOL!! Today his team, Juan and Adrian, came out to diagnose an issue with the air conditioner. They arrived on time, they were efficient, and they were friendly. They identified the problem, replaced the condenser pump and added one pound of refrigerant and the system is back up and running. They were so quick to respond when I reported the problem yesterday evening (coming out first thing this morning). They were good about wearing protective booties (without even being asked) when they came in the house, and they worked cleanly. I feel the charges were fair and reasonable. I would highly recommend 20th Century Air. They stand the test of time and they are an honest company.

They operate with zero price transparency, lie about broken parts, and even made an unauthorized duplicate charge on my credit card. Here is what happened: 1. Dishonest Diagnosis & "Shady" Price Bouncing: The technician initially insisted I needed a complete TXV replacement for around $1,600. When I said that was too expensive, he IMMEDIATELY dropped the price to $1,000 on the spot. What kind of company has a pricing policy like this? When I showed him the 2018 installation invoice proving the unit had an active 10-year Trane manufacturer warranty, he tried to claim this specific part wasn't covered. Only after I refused the service and said I would get a second opinion did he suddenly change his story and say, "Actually, the TXV is fine." 2. Gross Price Gouging & False Claims: - Refrigerant: The technician verbally told me R-410A refrigerant was $100/lb. However, on the invoice, they secretly charged me $200/lb ($300 for 1.5 lbs)! - Locking Cap: Charged $100 for a simple cap. The technician blatantly lied, claiming he bought it for $150, when the exact part (C&D CD2290/2) retails for around $35 for a 2-pack. - "Coil Cleaning": They charged $50 for a "Condenser Coil Cleaning," which literally consisted of spraying water on the condenser unit with a hose for 2 to 3 minutes. 3. Shady Billing Practices: They initially demanded $600, claiming it was "company policy." After aggressive bargaining, they dropped it to $450. When I asked for an itemized receipt, they said I had to pay first. Once I paid, they changed their story again and said office staff would email it later. 4. Fraudulent Duplicate Charge: When I emailed to complain about these absurd rates, the management called and argued with me. They eventually agreed to a $150 partial refund. Instead of issuing the refund, THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD ANOTHER $450 THE VERY NEXT DAY WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION! This company inflates prices, lies about diagnostic results, and improperly uses saved credit card information to make unauthorized charges. I have already filed credit card disputes and reported them to the CSLB and BBB. Stay far away from 20th Century Air!
