This was our first visit after they built these series of restaurants by the Harbor. While we did not have a reservation, the hostess was kind enough to put us on a list with the expectation of 30min wait time. We went across to the other outdoor bar to grab a drink while waiting. The wait time ended up being 20min which was great. We were given a high stool chair/table for our seating which was a bit uncomfortable for dinner. The weather was somewhat cold and windy, it would have been nice if we had a heater by our table. That certainly affected the ambience. We were greeted by our waitress (nice lady). She took our order and gave us great recommendation on the food (Lobster, Octopus, Blackened Ahi). From the time we put in our order, till the actual food being delivered to our table, it took over 45min. Seemed a bit long but perhaps the kitchen was short staffed due to COVID. The food was tasty. The ahi could use more sauce or mixing since it was a bit fishy. Octopus was definitely delicious and Lobster Mac & Cheese was also yummy. Service overall was satisfactory as they would check on you often. I would perhaps try this place during day time (lunch/brunch). read more

But, I reserved the seats a month in advanced and requested a seat by the ocean view for a birthday but also failed to accommodate it. Failed to eat here due to the lack of good or even okay service. Topsail is one of the newer additions to San Diego's waterfront eatery & bar scene. Nestled on top of the Brigantine restaurant with the same shared entrance, Topsail starts off with a spiral staircase up, encased in a glass dome. The host stand is right at the top of the stairs; hostesses have always been very welcoming and friendly. There are lounge group seatings with fire pits all along the border of the place, but they go fast so make a reservation if you're going at peak times. There's also a full bar in the center with many seats, along with ample seating throughout. This is an outdoor place, so make sure you dress accordingly and bring a jacket if need. They have heaters and fire pits everywhere but the wind does flow freely through. It was lunchtime on a Saturday, but we were lucky enough to score one of the perimeter couch seating areas. The views are perfect from just about anywhere here, but our spot gave us views of the bay and the Star of India ship. This was my third time here and service was good, as usual. Topsail has a nice selection of beer & some signature cocktails, but the full bar is always ready to make your usual favorites. I always stick with my usual dirty Kettle martini when I go. We brought some visiting fiends this time and they got the Mai Tai & iced tea - the Mai Tai was tasty. For lunch, we ordered: Spanish Grilled Octopus, Pork Belly Banh Mi Bao, Chimichurri Skirt Steak, Alaskan Halibut fish & Chips, Wagyu Burger, and the Grilled Salmon Salad. The grilled octopus was decorous and tender. The banh mi baos were pretty good, but lack the full banh mi flavors and needed more acidity that pickled carrots & daikon provides in an actual Vietnamese banh mi. The skirt steak was okay, but not the medium-rare specified and the chimichurri wasn't bad. Burger and fries were good. The grilled salmon salad was filling, but the fish wasn't seasoned much and the dressing was bland. The fish & chips are my favorite, well battered and fried, chips nice and crispy. The food here is decent, but the drinks and views more than make up for it. Prices are a little on the higher side, but it's the ambiance and views that you're also paying for. All in all, a good waterfront place to lunch or lounge with drinks while catching up with friends. This was my third time here and there will be more to come. read more

I actually wanted to go here after having something light at Ketch next door, but the wait was too long. Too bad you can't make reservations though, but the wait wasn't too bad on the day that we went again. My friend said that I would like it here and she was right! Topsail is located on top of Brigantine, so you have a wonderful view of the harbor. We got seated by the fireplace, so it kept us warm. We ended up sharing the charcuterie and cheese board, which was fantastic. It was nicely plated and had Bilbao chorizo, prosciutto, Italian salami, Humboldt fog, Point Reyes blue cheese, Port poached pear, grapes, marinated olives, whole grain mustard, and toasted baguette. This was definitely enough for 3-4 people. Service was nice, but at times our server was nowhere to be found. Perfect place to have a romantic night out, or to take friends that are visiting from out of town. read more

I stopped in the beautiful Top Sail Lounge for brunch. Yes, they offer brunch on Sunday's only starting at 10 am till 2 pm. For brunch, I had the Main Lobster Eggs Benedict's for $25. The Benedict's came with a side of breakfast potatoes. The Benedict's were quite good. The Citrus Hollandaise was delicious, the prosciutto was crispy and tasty, and the Main Lobster was good. I felt the butter poached lobster was a little overcooked and had a little bit of a chew. The poached eggs were cooked well and offered a good runny yolk. The potatoes were very good too. They came with some peppers and onions which was nice, and they were well seasoned. I like the idea of adding some cheese, specifically a white cheese, but they need to put a little more onto the potatoes. Service and the view were terrific. You get a great view of the bay from the Top Sail Lounge, and the service was quite friendly. Kerry, one of my servers was great. She had a great sense of humor and was very helpful. I enjoy this lounge-y bar located above The Brigantine Portside. I have been several times and the view and the vibe are hard to beat. The charcuterie board has changed over the years. Three stars for the service and gorgeous view. We chose this restaurant based on seeing menu pictures online/ on Yelp. It seemed to have interesting/ good options at not too bad prices. For example, lobster tail corn dogs at 5 dollars a pop sounded amazing. When we got there, the menu handed to us had none of the options that had caught our eye and the prices for the items they did have were higher than what we had seen. We had a show to catch and no time to Uber elsewhere. We ended up eating 2 apps and paying the price and going downstairs to Brigatine for a main course (review of that to follow on their page). Service was good but we were a bit disappointed in the higher than (we) expected pricing, so we probably would not return. read more

This is such a beautiful place! Love the ambiance here...and that's basically where the love ends. Came here for happy hour with some coworkers. The drinks were really good. I got a spa day (vodka) and a blackberry cider. Our waiter was nice but he spent more time talking to the hostess than serving. He said he would bring more water and that didn't happen till 20 minutes later due to talking to the hostess. I ordered the crispy pork belly banh mi baos and 1. I asked for an ETA TWICE and the waiter said he'll check with the kitchen but never came back to give me an estimate. The third time I told him I'm canceling the order if it doesn't come in 5 min...it came in 7...which was when I saw him next so I decided to let it go. 2. It took FORTY minutes to get this one order. 3. The pork belly had a nice crisp to it. You can't taste the spicy aioli at all. Worst of all, the buns itself was cold! It was like it just came out of the freezer and thawed. No point in complaining at this point since I had to leave. I had high hopes for this place and I was sadly let down (minus the drinks). Top Sail is the upstairs bar and lounge patio above Brigantine at the newly opened Portside Pier. Normally, there is a long waitlist to get a table at Brigantine, Ketch Grill & Taps, and Miguel's Cocina. If you take the stairs right inside Brigantine to reach Top Sail, then you might find a short wait or none at all to get seated which was what happened in my case. The outdoor setting was very spacious with beautiful elevated views of the harbor and nearby ships. The menu was rather limited and consisted of one page of small plates and two shareable platters (chilled seafood, meat and cheese board). I chose the Grilled Spanish Octopus ($18) to start my meal. The tentacles were cooked nicely with a little bit of char. They were served with bits of chorizo sausage, chickpeas, kale, cherry tomatoes, and pickled red onions in a romesco sauce. The flavor profile was very good as I had no issues at all with this dish. The Day Boat Scallop & Tiger Shrimp ($20) was my second item which was less of a hit. One jumbo shrimp rested on top of a scallop medallion which was surrounded by a butternut squash puree, barley, and herb salad with a lemon vinaigrette. The taste was rather punchless and what didn't make sense was how the plate cost as much as it did for two small bites of seafood. A couple more shrimp would have made it a more reasonably fair value. The service I received was fine, and the venue itself was très chic. If the kitchen can execute all their dishes as well as it did with the Grilled Spanish Octopus, then we're talking more than four stars for Top Sail. read more

Found this amazing place while searching for a restaurant with Oceanview in SD. I had a client meeting and he was very impressed. We ordered the pork belly buns. The pork was well cooked and the buns was soft and sweet just how I like it. Next was the shrimp tempura tacos. It had a lot of flavor with the sauce. The shrimp was fresh and this dish really hit the spot. Last one was their octopus. It was soft and tender with a lot of flavor. Came here on a Saturday afternoon on a bright and Sunny day. The views were incredible and the service was pleasant. We got seated immediately on some comfy sofas and were given menus. We ordered the fish and chips which were a little pricey but it was a great afternoon snack for 2. The fish was flaky and soft while the outside batter was light me crispy. They fires were also decent, and they came with 2 different sauces for dipping which were both great. This is great place to bring people who are visiting San Diego. I've been so excited to try this spot since it opened. It was a little tricky to find. It's located on the second story above the Brigantine. The entrance is cool, you take a spiral staircase under a glass dome. The bay view can't be beat. It's quintessential San Diego! There were three of us for lunch on a Tuesday. We were seated right away. There is a variety of seating options between tables, high tops, sofas and lounge chairs, and fire tables. It's truly a cool environment where you'd want to hang out a bit. There was a sign saying that there was a 2 hour time limit on tables. We ordered: - Ahi sliders (loved!) - Lobster tacos (these were incredible. They are small tacos and 3 come in an order. I could have eaten more!) - Lobster Mac and Cheese (what was nice is that it came with a lot of lobster, they didn't skimp, but the macaroni itself wasn't our favorite. I wouldn't order this again). Serving sizes are more on a tapas / appetizer size so weren't especially filling. The waitress said the most filling entrees are the burger, the fish and chips, and the short ribs. The only downside is that I really injured my toe due to the bathroom door. The door to the bathroom is VERY heavy and opens outward. I had to pull really hard to open the door and it smashed into my foot. My toe gushed blood for awhile, I'm in a lot of pain, and it's now grossly bruised. I'm sure I'm going to lose a nail. I'm not happy about this. So be warned! read more

Ideally you'd want to catch a drink or plan a date around the time sunset is so you can enjoy the fresh air, smell the ocean water and see the beauty of nature take its place. I like that the menu provides many great options to choose from to eat but not an overwhelming amount either. Our table tried tried the Brussels sprouts which came out just right. Had a variety of their selection to try from. Tried their charcuterie board which was a great start and enjoyed seeing the evening evolve through the night. The lights hung up make it look quite romantic and elegant. Would definitely come back again for an intimate dinner or meeting with larger groups. I wouldn't recommend the lobster dog, the steak, or the salad because everything else just stood out better. They weren't bad, but they were overpriced for simple items. The fish and chips also tasted great, but everything else was just better. The oysters is a must get because they tastes so clean and fresh. I typically do not lien oysters, but I was able to eat like 7 of these without any condiments. The lobster Mac and cheese and octopus is also a must get. read more
