Allured by the "affordable" prix fixe meal, I was shocked to not only see a 6% health surcharge, but also was notified in person of a extra 20% service fee. Be warned, although the price advertises it as a $52 4 course meal, the total came out to be about $70+pp after all the junk fees. The food was nothing to write home about either. The starter tomato soup I had tasted like haidilao hotpot's soup base. The rigatoni was a little undercooked for my taste, but the beef and overall flavor was savory and flavorful. The salmon...is just a pan seared salmon. The corn tasted like canned corn I put in my fried rice. The duck con fit was really tender and was cooked to perfection. The dessert of a dark chocolate cake and tres leches were probably my favorite dishes, partly because none of the other ones really stood out. From a place marketed as affordable, the final sticker shock was a lot higher than anticipated. Based on opentable's reservation system you would assume this restaurant was worth the hype - but turns out the seating is just very limited. I find it hard to justify forking over $70 pp for a meal I did not feel remotely full off of, especially with a mediocre vibe and loud noise levels. Very nice tasting menu that is also relatively affordable. I love the idea of this restaurant, weekly rotating menu with a 3 course menu for $45. Optional pasta course for an additional charge but its definitely worth trying and great to share. Started with a mushroom soup that was really rich and fragrant. Steak was really well cooked, tender and flavorful. We tried both pasta dishes, an actual pasta with a ragu and a risotto. Our waitress seemed bored with us, we say this as a comparison of how she spoke to the tables next to us. All in, the fixed price set menu dinner at Trestle cost about $70 without alcohol, so it is not a bad deal for a nice dinner in San Francisco. However, I wasn't blown away with the food. I went with a friend and as any fellow food lover would do, we got one of each of the choices offered on the menu. For starters, it was toast with chicken liver mousee topped with persimmons. That wasn't super flavorful and I didn't think the persimmons complemented the dish, but then again, I don't really like persimmons. The mushroom soup was very nicely presented, was flavorful, but needed a tad more salt. You can request the bread, which I loved- it was nice and thick and toasty. The second courses were much better. The mushroom risotto was creamy and perfectly cooked. The pasta with duck ragout was equally delicious. The pasta was so fresh and had the perfect texture which is unusual for me. It was very soft, but did not feel like it was overcooked. We both liked the mains- the shortrib was tender and flavorful and the fish was tasty- it came with a light red sauce with shrimp, mussels and croutons. Neither of us cared much for the desserts; the "cheesecake" was a meringue/macron like cookie with some ricotta like cheese with jam and the chocolate cake was nothing to write home about. Overall, the service was spot on and the restaurant has a nice but muted vibe. They don't have a liquor license so it's all beer and wine - good selections for both. Been eyeing Trestle for so many years and finally pulled the trigger. Menu rotates weekly and features a 3 course menu for $45 with an optional pasta course for $12. There are two pasta options and the portion is perfect for sharing so I recommend that you only need to order one to share if you're dining as a party of two. The best way to approach the menu, as a party of two, is to order everything. There's two options each for app, entree, and dessert so just individually order an option from each and share. Overall, I appreciated the seasonality and attention in every dish. My favorites from each part of the menu were the carrot soup, black cod, and panna cotta. The carrot soup was perfect for the cooler weather, the black cod was cooked so perfectly tender, and the panna cotta was a nice fresh end. I loved the amount of green garlic in the cavatelli but did feel like it needed a bit more salt; same with the truffle stuffed chicken. The format is a fixed daily menu with two choices per course across four courses. I went with the cured salmon salad, gulf shrimp risotto, seared branzino, and milk chocolate panna cotta. Every single dish landed. The salmon was a refined, clean opener; the risotto was rich without being heavy; the branzino was perfectly seared; and the panna cotta was a quietly elegant finish. A heads up: portions are on the smaller side, but that's by design -- this is a meal meant to be savored, not rushed. Lean into it. Service was attentive and polished from start to finish, exactly what you'd hope for at this level. Their beer menu had lots of really interesting options, and I tried a couple different cans that were all great. The three course prix fixe is great, and it was nice having some options but not option overload. For starters, we got the asparagus salad and spring pea soup. Both were great but I thought the pea soup was the standout. Both had amazing presentation as well. We also ordered the complimentary bread - it was a great side to the soup, but the pieces we had were on the burnt side and kinda hurt my teeth :O We then go the supplemental pasta dish, a gulf shrimp risotto. The risotto was delicious and cooked perfectly. Splitting between two people, it was on the smaller side, but definitely a decent portion if you're getting it for yourself. This was my favorite dish of the meal. If you're hungry I would HIGHLY recommend getting at least one of the supplemental pasta dishes as the portions of all the dishes are on the smaller side. For mains, we got the seared mahi and pork Milanese - the mahi was so flavorful and cooked perfectly, and the pork Milanese was also crispy and fresh, and came with an amazing dijon sauce. Food was amazing; would've been 5 stars but the service was a bit off. I booked a dinner for my birthday with some friends, and I showed up ~5 minutes after our reservation started. Our waiter kept mentioning that I was late, which I found pretty rude because my leg is injured and I can't walk well. I literally went into the restaurant with crutches and a leg brace on. The service was also very rushed and my plates were taken away as soon as I finished. At the end of the meal they brought out a candle on one of the desserts, which was cute, but they gave it to my friend instead. At the beginning of the meal they did ask who was celebrating that day, and they saw that it was me. I'd hope they would've coordinated that better. This is a small restaurant that changes their menu every week and it is fun to see what you will get! We got to try: * Honeynut Squash & Frisée Salad - this was refreshing and absolutely delicious with a burst of a variety of flavors. Rather, we picked one out of two options for each course, and saved our time to gab. The favorite of the night was the duck confit and the olive oil cake. The duck skin was nice and crispy. The sauce was flavorful and had unexpected sweetness. My friend got the olive oil cake and it came with a basil cream on the side which was not too sweet. We loved our wine recommendation. Forget the name of it but it was a white wine from Spain that our waiter recommended. Paired really nicely with our meal. Definitely an intimate space, so be mindful of booking a reservation ahead of time. Overall a nice meal. A 5 star experience! I came here for an early birthday celebration. We made reservations the night before for 5:30pm. When we arrived, our table was ready with a nice birthday note waiting for me (so sweet!). We were immediately greeted with warm energy and friendly smiles by all of the staff. Immediately being asked about dietary restrictions was refreshing. Anywho, we came for their special seasonal menu with this one highlighting tomatoes. For my starter I got the tomato soup, and it was delicious. (The cheese was whipped - impressive). As my pasta, I got the linguine, vegetarian style. That was definitely my favorite dish because it had a unique flavor profile, and it was really refreshing in flavor. For my main, I opted to get another pasta - the risotto - also vegetarian style. What I liked most is that they gave me a good portion size. Unfortunately, I could only take a couple of bites, I was really stuffed. For dessert, I got the chocolate tart. It was really delicious, and I loved that they had a vanilla bean whipped cream on the side. My two other friends that joined me also enjoyed their dishes as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. Trestle is always a treat. For 52 dollars, they give you what is close to a Michelin Star experience. I came here with a friend for whom it's his first time eating at Trestle. We came out appoint and were seated promptly, even though the restaurant is quite busy. The ambiance featured dim intimate lighting -'d was very picture friendly. Solid American dinner spot. Somehow accomplishing being a nice meal while still being casual. Definitely not the best in value (the pre tax, tip, etc price always seems surprisingly cheap, but the final bill does not). However I think the restaurant mostly met expectations. Reservations are highly recommended - on a Saturday night, there were people waiting outside for a table and a constant flow of people coming in presumably with reservations. It's perfect for two people because you can share and try one of everything off their daily menu. There's also an option to add another dish which I would recommend because the portions aren't particularly big. The first course was the kale salad and the potato leek soup. This was the one course where I liked the items equally (aka I liked both of them a lot) but the kale was pleasantly surprising because the blue cheese (which I don't like) was light enough to not be offensive. The short rib rigatoni was tasty but simple (might be something that's possible to recreate at home). Wasn't a huge fan of the cod main mostly because I wasn't a fan of the clam / fishy flavors in the sauce. The focaccia and saffron was the stand out for me in that dish. Pork chop had good texture and flavor, but overall the mains were outshone by the other courses. Compared to the whipped cheesecake (which had an underwhelming presentation), the devils food cake really shone. The chocolate was very rich and paired well with the orange on top. Overall the food is nothing stellar, and the restaurant was quite loud which made it hard for conversation (borderline three stars). I also walked away from the meal feeling content but not full. Despite all this, the vibes were actually quite good and the servers were friendly and attentive (which is why I'm rating this 4 stars). It was an extremely cozy and romantic setting despite being completely full. All of the waitstaff were very friendly and attentive, and all of the dishes came out very quickly. We started with a sunchoke soup and bread, and the soup was incredibly creamy and bread perfectly toasted. We opted to add the pasta and the carbonara was very rich and tasty. We've been to Trestle several times over the past few years and went again most recently on a Saturday night. As noted by other folks, Trestle recently changed their menu to 4 courses for $52. Gone are the days where you opt in to add the fourth pasta course for an additional $12. Because Trestle transparently states that they add a 20% service fee and a 6% Healthy San Francisco mandate to every bill, the way to think about pricing here is the minimum spend per person is $71 before any upcharges like alcohol, tea, coffee, etc. For our meal, we had the Spanish omelet and tomato soup appetizers, corn risotto and sweet pepper rigatoni, sirloin for our mains, and chocolate cake and fig crostata for dessert. Everything was fine for the most part, but we did not enjoy the chocolate cake, Spanish omelet, or sweet pepper rigatoni. The best thing we ate hands down was the bread, available upon request. It comes out warm and freshly grilled with Trestle's house-whipped butter. Absolutely recommend asking for the bread when you dine here. Service was friendly, warm, and welcoming all night across everyone we interacted with. Zero stuffiness or pretentiousness that you find at other pre fixe places. It was packed on a Saturday night (though I'll note we made our reservation only 1 day in advance and there were plenty of options), and it definitely gets loud inside + tables are very close together. For $52 ($71 post-tax and mandatory service fees) per person, Trestle offers an elevated dining experience for night out without breaking the bank. On the flip side, food was okay and most items seemed pre-prepared and not fresh. Last note - I personally love tomatoes but if you don't, I recommend waiting until post-summer to try Trestle. We made a reservation, arrived a few minutes early, and were seated at a nice corner table, so we were more next to each other on a diagonal instead of across from one another (loved this!). We perused the drink menu (maybe in too much detail - but there are so many great options), and our server didn't rush us at all. I went with the St. Bernardus Christmas ale (finding this on a menu truly felt like an Easter egg, or Christmas surprise), and my husband went for a German beer. On to the food. It's a tasting menu, with two options for each course, so we ordered one of each. We started with the marinated calamari and confit potato - which was very flavorful, and playful, and the green garlic soup, which was also very good with great depth of flavor. Next course was the pasta course, where we had the corn and truffle risotto, which was delicious. We also had the ricotta gnudi, which came with prosciutto, English peas, and pickled ramps, another fun, dynamic dish. For entrees, we had the crispy skin branzino - I am typically not a fan of fish skin (crispy or not), but will note it was pretty good; I did end up flipping the fish over and eating the fish without the skin. The roasted prime sirloin was also very good, on an onion galette (yum), perfectly cooked, accompanied by shaved asparagus. On to dessert. The whipped cheesecake came with an almond macaroon on top, roasted strawberries, and balsamic. The dark chocolate tart came with vanilla cream, and fun, playful, crunchy topping of candied cocoa nibs. Upon walking in for our 9:30 PM reservation, which by the way I love that they offer, I was reminded of how much I enjoy the restaurant! The ambiance just lowers my blood pressure and the staff are ALWAYS on their game! I cannot say enough about the manager who sets an amazing tone for her team in terms of service, warmth, attentiveness and customer care. My date made reservations at Trestle for our first date, and it was a great choice! The pre-fixe menu was perfect since I hate reading through long menus; too many options stress me out. Every dish was delicious, and we split everything. I honestly don't remember all the courses because we were so caught up in conversation, but everything was solid. They serve beer and wine only, and the wine we had was an excellent recommendation by our server. I didn't get any photos because I make it a point to not take photos and stay present during my dates but the presentation of all the dishes was lovely. One thing to note: The restaurant is small and can get loud, which might not be ideal for a first date. Since I arrived early, I asked the hostess for a quieter spot, and she was super accommodating, seating us in a cozy corner booth and we were able to sit next to each other for easier conversation. Pricing is reasonable for a pre-fixe meal, and at the end, they bring out a small guest registry book where people leave notes. My date wrote something sweet in there, which was a fun and personal touch by the restaurant. We stayed until closing, and the staff was kind enough not to rush us out. I would give a solid 4.5/5 if I can. Food: 4.8/5 Highlights of the night are beet salad (fragrant, well balanced, with pops of surprises, both in flavor and texture). She literally dumped the soup in my dad's bowl and walked away without any introduction whatsoever. Second round comes, she carries the same poker face, drops our dishes on the table without eye contact, and walks away without a word. No explanation, no smile, like I owe her $1 million. I understand a day working in a busy restaurant can be difficult and tiring, however, I don't appreciate to be treated like that which ruins the overall experience. Again, everyone else has been very kind. Overall, I would still recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. You walk out to feeling happy and full. read more

Trestle was good not great. Nothing I had there made me stop and say "oh my god". The short rib was a bit dry and a bit tough. The Branzino was good. Service was great and the ambiance was lovely. It is very reasonably priced but with all the food options in the city, it is probably one and done for me. read more

rotating $52 4 course prix fixe. very dependent on what menu you get. dined with my friend and we got one of each dish. liked the celery root soup, lamb bolognese, and carrot cake. thought the rest of the dishes were ok. duck confit was pretty good but was too salty after a few bites. great value if the menu is good. service is friendly, meal is fast paced. restaurant was very packed for our 5:30 seating and i saw quite a few people waiting outside for their reservation time. read more

What an amazing little restaurant! 10/10 We came here for my graduation celebration meal. A small little restaurant, but amazing food and service. Food - We got the $50 prefix meal and it was wonderful. The menu included 2 options per appetizer, first course, main course, and dessert. We both tried one of each. I'd say for me the corn soup and pasta dish were my favorites. My partner loved the soup and seafood main. No negative feedback. We'll be back! Ambiance - Such a beautiful little restaurant. It's a dim lit spot but the decor was beautiful. The dining area is a bit smaller, so you're sitting a little close to others - not abnormal for SF spot. Wasn't an issue to us at all! Service - The service was great. Upon arriving we were greeted by a lady with such kind energy. She sat us down. Our server was a cute lil Asian guy - I think his name was Charles? Trestle is nestled in the sweet spot of affordable, delicious, and uniquely cozy. It's a romantic gem with an excellent prix fixe menu in a small but chic space. It's the perfect spot for a date night (though it is admittedly a bit intimate for a first date) -- we came on our one-year anniversary and were treated to cute additions including a happy anniversary card and specialized chocolates on our desserts. It's the little things like this that show the Trestle team pays attention to detail to make the dining experience exceptional. The prix fixe had two choice for an appetizer, entree, and dessert, and we opted for one of each -- everything was fresh and delicious. Following advice on other comments, we added one of the optional $12 pasta dishes to our dining and it was the PERFECT choice -- the portions are (understandably) a bit small, but having a bit of pasta between the appetizer and entree left us leaving feeling very full and satisfied. I'd add my voice to the many other recommendations to add on an extra pasta dish for every two diners at your table. The staff was incredibly lovely, attentive, and professional -- they clearly worked as a team and service was smooth and quick (one of the benefits of a smaller menu!). My personal favorite part of the night was the sign book that came with the bill -- they have a notebook where past diners can write their names/a little note to share. We had so much fun reading through the snapshots of romantic evenings other people in the city have had at the very table we were now having ours. In a small way, we felt a sense of connection to our community as we added our names and imagined future diners smiling as they saw our names etched into the book of fond memories at Trestle. Trestle is a cute little restaurant with a pleasant ambience: a nice venue for either a semi-casual or semi-formal date night. The host was very prompt in providing water and wine as well as clearing dishes as needed. Each course was delivered promptly after completion of the prior course; however, not so quickly that we felt rushed for time. For each course on the menu, I had the: Roasted Tomato Soup, Black Truffle Risotto, Crispy Duck Confit, and Dark Chocolate Cake. Each course was sizable enough to make for a filling meal without being too cumbersome. The tomato soup was tasty and only had a choice number of chunks of cooked tomato and onion (which I prefer personally). The risotto was the highlight of the me for me. The peas added a nice, fresh note to the savory ham and creamy broth (which were both excellent). The tarragon made another note in the taste that was quite pleasant and diversified the flavor, while there seemed to be a mild but noticeable aftertaste of star anise leading me to really prolong and enjoy this dish. The duck came with a pea stew and cherry jus, which mixed nicely with the crispy skin of the duck. The duck itself was very tender and moist, and overall rather delightful. The fried squash blossom, which was a cooked flower stuffed with duck and squash, was absolutely wonderful as well! Finally, the cake had a nice balance of dark chocolate and coffee flavoring, and the mascarpone was mild but complemented the cake just right. My one qualm here was that we ordered decaf coffee with the dessert and, while it was delicious, it arrived after we both completed our courses (albeit we both have a sweet-tooth and finished our desserts somewhat promptly). read more
