I was really excited to try this place but left a little disappointed. My friend and I came for a mom's lunch and arrived just after opening at 11:10. We were seated right away on the patio (perfect spot on such a pretty day) and our server was wonderful--she and her trainee were friendly, attentive, and a real bright spot of the visit. We started with the fried okra. It was my first time trying it and I thought it was fine, but my friend (who grew up in the South) said it wasn't the best she's had. For mains, I had the blackened mahi with basil citrus butter sauce, mac and cheese, and poblano soup. My friend ordered the smothered chicken with mac and cheese and a salad. The food just didn't land the way we hoped. My fish tasted like it had been microwaved--I couldn't pick up any blackened seasoning or citrus in the sauce, and a squeeze of lemon would've helped brighten it. My friend's chicken looked doughy inside, almost like the breading was soggy. The mac and cheese was delicious, but the soup had a strange texture and didn't taste fresh. Since we were among the first customers of the day and it wasn't busy, I expected a little more care in the preparation. That said, I don't think this is a one-and-done. The service and atmosphere were great, and I'd be open to giving it another try. If the food comes out fresher and more flavorful next time, this could easily become a favorite spot. read more

We came back for a second visit recently, this time sitting at the bar with a girlfriend, and the experience was completely different, in the best way. We were greeted right away, and service was quick and attentive from the start. My friend ordered a drink and it came out at a perfect time with no long wait. Our food was excellent. We both ordered the meatloaf, and it was a great portion and tasted really good--comfort food done right. We also tried the salad again, and this time it was exactly how it should be: fresh, crisp, and properly chilled. Overall, this visit was a huge improvement and showed what the restaurant is capable of when everything is running smoothly. We'll definitely be going back. read more

Okay, so, I'm going to give this 4 stars JUST BECAUSE our first waiter was TERRIBLE! She didn't even want to be at work, clearly. From the time she came to take our water order, and the time we got the wrong drinks, I'd say was around 20 mins. Seriously. She checked on the people in the booth on both sides of us, but never stopped to see if we got our water (we didn't or if our food order was take. However, the manager came over and took care of us. We initially ordered our drinks with the first waiter. We ordered the Whiskey flights (get it, they're soooo good) brought out by the manager, he then took our order. He waited on us and made the rest of our experience better. This place is soooo picture perfect. It's soooo cute, and decorated to perfection. I got the chicken and waffles and they were soooooo good. My friends enjoyed their food as well. I would love to come back and try other options on the menu. It all sounds delicious. read more

Have been patiently waiting for this spot to open for at least a year so was excited to get to go here for dinner tonight. Since it just opened, I had the foresight to make reservations (def recommend because apparently the wait at 5:30 on Wednesday was 45 mins!), so we were seated right away. The space is attractively decorated, but as others have commented, it is quite loud in there. We all got waters plus an iced tea for my mom. The waiter stopped by shortly and my dad ordered the original biscuits to try. They came out pretty quickly. I will say, I was a little disappointed in the biscuits. I think they were solid, but I guess my expectations were really high and they didn't meet those expectations. I actually found them a bit salty. And they weren't as soft and flaky as I would've liked, and may have been a hair overbaked. We did all agree that the blueberry compote was delicious. We ended up ordering our dinner when the biscuits came out. But from here we had a couple of service/training issues that came up. When they came to clear the biscuits, the busser dropped my buttery knife in my lap. They just need a little bit more training on how to bus with the small plates and silverware. They also left a bottle of honey on the table through the entire meal. Maybe they were leaving it for my dad, who had I think the sweet and spicy chicken sandwich (it's late and I don't feel like looking up though name), but it stayed on the table through dessert too. My mom and I were both overwhelmed seeing the calorie counts by each menu item - I get that's a state by state regulation so it's easier to be consistent for the corporate office but whew, it's absolutely eye-opening, in a bad way, how high some of those counts are. Anyway, we both got the avocado melt. I added brussels sprouts on the side and my mom got whatever their soup is. I should mention my dad got the collard greens with the sandwich. Food came out pretty quickly. And I thought it was solid. I think I prefer both brass onion, and Lula Southern cookhouse for southern food, but it was solid. To me, it was a Houlihan's level of dining. Like it's solid, but it's not a place that you're like "oh my God, that was delicious! I need to go back for special occasions." Prices reflect that, so I can't complain about that, but it was just kind of a letdown because I was really looking forward to having a new southern restaurant in town. As the waiter came by to bus our dinner. My dad asked about dessert. We landed on the Mississippi mud pie. About 10 mins later, the server brought out a dessert. I say A dessert because it was a pecan pie. I pointed out that it was not the right order. And she looked a bit confused, but she took it back to the kitchen and said she'd get it fixed. Another 10-15 minutes later nobody has stopped by our table. We don't have a dessert, we're just sitting and waiting. We didn't even see our waiter at all. Eventually, my dad waved down the busser from earlier and explained the issue. She went back to the kitchen and who I thought must've been a manager brought out the correct slice within five minutes. And then our waiter showed up and said oh look I'm glad you've got your dessert. Which was kind of odd because he had not checked on us in nearly 20 minutes. And the pie was fine. Nothing to write home about, but it didn't taste homemade. All in all, it was a pretty good meal. As I said, I'm pretty indifferent to it. I would happily go back, but I don't know that I would ever recommend or plan to go back personally, if that makes sense. Glad I went and tried it, but the food is just solid and maybe if I've gotten something else I would have found a very craveable dish. But those craveable items were like 1200 cal so you know, it was hard to overlook for me. I can't blame them for putting in the calorie counts on the menu, I know why they did it, but I would recommend if you were on a diet or have some other low-calorie regime, this might not be the spot for you because you won't be able to find something that doesn't stress you out. I'm not even necessarily on a diet, just trying to watch what I eat a little bit, and I couldn't do it. read more

I had been reading good things about Tupelo and, being a Southern girl since birth, knew I had to try this place out. The restaurant itself is nice. Our only complaint about the atmosphere was that the music, when we went, was way too loud and made it hard to have a conversation. For an appetizer, we ordered the sweet potato biscuits. The biscuits were warm, very cinnamon-y, and so delicious!!! They are served with a side of peach jam and scoop of real butter. Unfortunately, the peach jam tasted sour, like the peaches were not ripe when it was made. For our entrees, I ordered the Southern chicken BLT sandwich with a side of goat cheese grits. The sandwich consists of your choice of either a fried or grilled chicken breast along with apple cider bacon, lettuce, tomato, Dijonnaise, and a potato bun. I opted for the grilled chicken breast and it was very well-seasoned and juicy!!! I've never had apple cider bacon before, but it was very crisp with just the right amount of sweetness. The Dijonnaise was not overpowering and the potato bun was well-toasted. Anytime I go to a restaurant that has grits, I have to try them. Tupelo has AMAZING goat cheese grits. They are super creamy and not salty at all. Very well done! My husband ordered the chicken and waffles, which I had to try. The chicken was very crispy and the breading reminded me of the same breading my mom uses on her pork chops! The waffle was soft and fluffy and toasted to perfection. Had to try the new restaurant to KC and by our house. Went to happy hour but found out they have no happy hour yet....ate at the bar. The blackened mahi was delicious and very reasonably priced. The Caesar salad was just okay but the chicken poblano soup was delicious. My husband got the Mac and cheese and Parmesan rosemary potatoes which were delicious. Almost everything was delicious. Marking down due to drink selection and pricing. Pricey $13 cocktail and they didn't carry a lot of our favorite beers and alcohol brands. Anxious to see what they do with happy hours but will definitely be back for mahi and chicken poblano soup. They were delicious. Service at the bar was okay but it was the first week- still sorting things out. Forgot to take pics of my mahi and the Mac and cheese but both have a kick which I love! I am so glad this has finally opened! I have loved Tupelo Honey since 2017, when I lived in Greenville, SC, so to get it in KC was so the most exciting! Their biscuits are a must! I have yet to try the sweet potato version but the original with the blueberry jam, whipped butter, and honey are incredible! I used to always get the shrimp and grits and would tell anyone and everyone they were the best. They are a must try!! As of late, I can't eat dairy, so I had to pivot. I recently got the farmhouse breakfast platter (selections being: 2 eggs over medium, potatoes, and soy-sage). They were able to accommodate my dairy intolerance which was so kind so the potatoes didn't have Parmesan and nothing was cooked in butter. The soy-sage was so good too! I also treated myself to a southern hospitality mimosa (peach and pineapple) and it was SO good! I got the smaller version and was shocked at how big it was - a very pleasant surprise! The service was quick even though the place was packed and all the workers were so friendly and welcoming! The place is decorated beautifully which provides for the most fun atmosphere. I ordered a breakfast meal w/a side of brussel sprouts; never got the brussel sprouts Food was brought by another waitress, had to asked her for a refill on coffee since the 1st waitress didn't come back. We visited this location when it first arrived and enjoyed it quite a bit. Started with fried green tomatoes. They were crispy and pretty flavorful considering they probably came from a food distribution company. Next, I had the honey dusted chicken which was crispy and definitely sweet with honey. Unfortunately the pieces were pretty anemic. The leg pieces were finished in two bites and were close to being dry. My wife and the shrimp and grits which came deconstructed so she could decide how much goat cheese she wanted. Good flavor and the shrimp were cooked well. Unfortunately the grits weren't very creamy. Good flavor, but struggled in the texture department. All-in-all it proved to be worth another try. This is the part where you see why they get 2 stars and we won't be back: We decided to visit again tonight before the snow started falling during the weekend. It was a little late so we made the order carry out so they could finish up and clear down. What we brought home was lazy, flavorless food that had no business being served. The fried chicken was wet with grease with very small pieces. The mash was lumpy and over salted. The fried green tomatoes this time were wet with grease and tasted like peppered bread crumbs. The whole order screamed of late night long John silvers trash. Nothing about it demonstrated any care whatsoever about the quality and frankly it was a disrespectful attempt at just trying to finish the day. Drinks were okay, but mule was ordered and it came unmixed...very syrupy in bottom, and should have been shaken separately before pouring in glass. Food was just okay. Meatloaf was an unusual size - seemed like it was cooked in a large muffin tin and texture was unusually smooth. Potatoes were so salty they were inedible. Fried okra was good. Would recommend that they plate the potatoes and okra in separate dishes so the gravy doesn't run under them on the plate. Chicken tenders were okay, but maybe overpriced at $16. Manager did come to see us and took $10 off bill for inedible potatoes and unmixed drink. So, ok experience and ok food. Might try them again for a good southern breakfast. read more

On entryway the vibe of this place is amazing. High top and low top tables as well as booths. Photo ops galore as there are flowers on the ceilings and a cute little wall in the entryway. The whiskey flight was a fun way to try 3 different ones. I had the blueberry lemonade which was delicious. Ice cold and taste of summer or taste of a drink you would have sitting on a porch swing. I loved the biscuits with fresh peach and blueberry jam. The Chicken Polenta soup was a nice appetizer. The whiskey and onion smash burger was cooked to perfection. I chose Brussels sprouts that were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. To finish off my meal banana pudding served with a dessert whiskey in a beautiful flower teacup. Service was fast and knowledgeable about food and drink choices. She was great at recommending cocktails that paired well with food choices. Family friendly with plenty of seating. There was a happy hour menu available with many discounted drinks available to choose from. Excellent restaurant for girls night out, after work meetups or dinner out with the family. I'm not usually a chain girlie but I first tried to go to Tupelo Honey years ago when I was in Charleston and I couldn't get in so was excited to see it open nearby. Went at 5:30 and happy hour goes til 6. Drinks specials on happy hour aren't amazing ($2 off most things) but 1/2 priced apps and the fried green tomatoes were absolute fire!!! Also the daily drink specials are pretty good. I had 2 of the $3 cosmos and they were good and strong. For entree I had traditional chicken and waffles and it was delicious. Went last week with some work colleague to celebrate my birthday, it was lovely! The ambiance was super chill but cute! We started with the biscuit starter to share and I HIGHLY recommend. The pairing of the salty butter with the sweet (in our case peach) jam was the perfect balance and the biscuit was epically amazing. The sweet tea was delicious and I got the spicy version of the chicken and waffles. A coworker got the peach chicken and waffles and the other, the burger. I will say, the ONLY reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the waffles were not small and very thick but you only got 1 piece of chicken, pretty much like a thick chicken strip and me and my coworker both agreed that there wasn't enough chicken for the amount of waffle. It wasn't necessarily their portions were small type issue, more that their waffles needed to be thinner or do 2 medium vs 1 large chicken strip situation.
