Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I guess this is what happens when you become a chain restaurant.... For context, I've been to Uchi five times now, and last night made six. What brought me for the first time in over a year in was a $100 coupon in the mail, which should have been a big red flag. 1. We (two females) arrived for an 8 pm reservation at 7:45 pm and were told to wait, so we sat on the bench in the entry. A group of three men arrived shortly thereafter and said they were checking in for an 8 pm reservation. They were offered "bites from the chef" and escorted to their table as soon as they were finished. They literally never even sat down to wait. We waited several more minutes, and despite some extra (individually plated) "bites from the chef" still remaining at the host stand, there was no invitation for us to enjoy them. 2. Our first dish didn't arrive for about 20 minutes after we put the order in. Our waitress actually came over to apologize that the kitchen was "really backed up" tonight. She also added that she had directed the kitchen to course our dishes in a certain order, but she basically told us that might not happen. Sure enough, one of our hot dishes (wagyu daily special) didn't arrive until after they'd already brought out our first round of fish. 3. Oh and that first round of fish? It was the heavier/richer nigiri, like sake toro. A plating of lighter fish, like yellowtail, was brought out at the end of the meal. Completely backwards. The woman who brought the lighter fish carefully identified each one to me and advised me on the order in which to eat them. However, the man who dropped off the heavier/richer fish named them quickly, didn't bother to identify which was which, and immediately walked away without telling me what order to eat them in. 4. Let's go back to that wagyu daily special I mentioned. That was the wagyu tataki, $33.50 for what's essentially a thinly sliced single bite of meat. I'm fine with that if the slivers are worth the price, but they weren't. The meat was overcooked and was served with broccolini instead of bok choy. No explanation or apology for the substitution was ever given. 5. The machi cure ($23.50) was sloppily put together -- uneven cuts of fish, some huge chunks, some tiny slivers -- and was arranged so unevenly that we ended up having to compile our own bites by hand rather than simply grabbing the chips as instructed. 6. Food was taking so long to come out of the kitchen that multiple different people seated on the patio were frequently stepping indoors and looking around trying to find someone to ask about where their food was. (Our table was right in front of the entrance to the patio, so we frequently had people sort of weirdly standing next to us trying to find some help.) 7. The suzuki yaki ($20.50), a grilled striped bass, arrived with the instruction to "crack the skin with your fork." I dutifully tried and failed as the very-not-crisp, very-soggy skin caved inward and splayed the fish in half. It definitely had been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. 8. They don't have foie gras on the menu anymore. I'm not going to get into a debate about the ethics of foie gras here except to say that I've been told that at least one US producer (Hudson Valley Foie Gras) is known for their humane treatment of the ducks (free-range, hand-fed, NOT force-fed). But, do your own research and make your own decisions there. I'm just here to let you know that foie gras is off the menu, and I'm a little sad about it. 9. Usually when I'm eating at Uchi with just one other person and order the Fried Milk ($14), the person taking my order asks if we want to add an extra milk ball since there are only three (because of course there are only three). We didn't get asked that this time, and I forgot to mention it, so then we had to sadly decide who got the third milk ball (they can't be shared because it's liquid inside). But that's arguably not the worst part, which is that it was served without the advertised toasted blondie. It arrived instead on a small pile of chocolate that had the texture of pot-de-creme. The flavors were just...boring. 10. The fish quality just wasn't nearly as good as it has been on previous visits, which I would attribute to a particular change. If you listen carefully, you'll hear the waitstaff describe the toyosu selection -- which used to be flown in daily from Japan -- as their "weekly" selection. (#tariffs!) So they're no longer getting fresh fish daily. In fact, you might be eating fish that's a week old. OVERALL: I get that times are hard, especially for a business built on offering daily fresh fish from Japan. But the quality has suffered GREATLY with weekly fish deliveries. Furthermore, the kitchen has become a disorganized mess -- numerous menu substitutions, with no heads-up and no apology, and sending courses wildly out of order. All of this is frankly unacceptable when you're paying these prices. Sayōnara, Uchi. read more

Uchi Dallas... what a stunning restaurant, full of southern charm and incredible hospitality. My friend and I met up in Dallas for dinner and decided to try Uchi. We didn't have a reservation on a Monday night, but the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the host and offered seats at the bar with no wait at all. As soon as we sat down, our server and the sushi chef behind the bar (I think his name was David--apologies if I'm wrong!) welcomed us right away. He was funny, kind, and really took care of us. We went with the Omakase, and I'll be honest I was expecting to still be a little hungry afterward... but I left completely full and incredibly satisfied. Every dish was beautifully plated, expertly crafted, and absolutely delicious. The service was flawless from start to finish, and the atmosphere just made everything feel even more special. I'm heading back to Dallas in August, and Uchi is already at the top of my list. I seriously can't wait to return. Love you guys! read more

This is the third Uchi location I've been to, and the least impressed I've been. The ambiance is that of a date night spot, similar to the other locations. The difference is organization and speed. We ordered several rolls and nigiri, and twice an order was forgotten. We would also be waiting 10-15 minutes in between rolls. The restaurant wasn't packed so I was confused as to why the service was so slow. The flavor was of course amazing, but I wouldn't come back with a date because of how slow and disorganized the food service was. I didn't have that problem in Denver nor Scottsdale, so I know it can be better. The portions also felt smaller than I remember. I don't know if it was tariffs, but I was very underwhelmed. read more

Uchi has officially fallen off, I'll say it. Uchi/uchiba/uchiko used to be my absolute favorite spot to celebrate. Their happy hour was my ride or die. I've been going since living in Austin This Dallas location, as you can see from some recent reviews as well, is so hit or miss. To quote another reviewer "overrated, overhyped". Is this just what happens to chains? This recent encounter was a huge miss for me. Management didn't even come to apologize The food overall was ok. Everything did not taste as good as it used to. The once crunchy karaage was soggy... they desperately need to go back to the original dish where they plated the karaage instead of putting it in a box. What's amazing about karaage is the crunch and that was completely missing. The Brussels, which once blew my mind with that fish sauce caramel, was just so sweet and salty in an unbalanced way. The rest of the dishes were ok as well. Nothing really was special. What really upset me was the clay pot mushroom rice dish- kinoko nabe. As I was eating the dish there was sand like material, and I thought at first ok maybe that's just the crunchy, crispy rice bits. Then I felt a really hard bite, crunched down on my tooth and saw something that looked like a pebble. I was like ok what's this and tried to move on. A few bites later there are multiple little pebbles in the food, I wish I took a picture of all of them...the waiter wanted to take them back to see what was going on. Apparently he told me the prep chef forgot to cut the ends of the mushroom the day before? Also why were ends of the mushroom hard as rock? Honestly they looked like pebbles...And why did the chef not notice that before throwing it into the dish? Honestly so frustrating writing this review thinking about how I consumed what was probably dirt from the mushroom. They remade our dish and didn't charge us, but it still just made no sense. I feel like a restaurant charging so much should have trained prep staff and chef to catch errors like this! These things do happens, but when you're paying for a more fine dining experience, that Uchi claims to offer, this really shouldn't happen and not with the extent of non edible ingredients found in the dish...save your hard earn money! Dallas restaurant scene has far better options. The only redeeming grace is their fried milk dish- 5/5 but maybe avoid this location and try the other ones. The service was also mediocre and slow. Overrated, overhyped, and overpriced. I had been so excited trying Uchi for the first time since I missed my chance in Austin! Heard that the Dallas location was even better but I couldn't believe how something this hyped can be so bad. Service: Our server was very knowledgeable but the service was so slow. We had to keep flagging down other employees for items. We requested fresh wasabi and it took them 15 mins to bring out. At which point, we had already almost finished all of our food. Alcohol: Note, they do not have a liquor licenses so there is only sake available. Food: I cannot believe how overpriced the food was and I live in California. Pricing is comparable to Nobu but quality does not even measure. The fish was served warmer than room temperature and tasted very fishy. I should have known not to go to a sushi restaurant in a city that is nowhere near the ocean. We had dinner for three with three drinks each, a carpaccio plate, and 5-6 pieces of nigiri. After hearing all the hype around this place, I have to say that while the fish quality was top tier, the Uchi Omakase experience left a lot to be desired. There was no show stopper or item that really left me wanting to come back or even beyond satisfied. In terms of ambience, the restaurant itself was cozy and our server was attentive and friendly. However the value for money just cannot be justified. My partner and I spent over $500 and for that price were both expecting to be blown away. Tried the omakase here, and it was pretty good. Really enjoyed the hot stone dish, salmon nigiri, and the hand rolls! The cocktails made with sake were also fantastic and refreshing!! I was utterly blown away by Uchi! My wife and I went for her birthday to try something new. We've heard great things from others, but we weren't sure what to expect. We had a reservation which many others recommend. We asked the waiter to help with recommendations and we built our own meal from the menu. We tried about nine different items. The most standout items had to be the hot plate and the Brussels sprouts (amazing!!). While those were standouts, we enjoyed each of our items. Between the presentation, food, and atmosphere, it was an extremely enjoyable experience. One of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. Happy hour here is a major game changer! Hubby and I had the omikase dinner and our friends just chose their own menu items. I mean........EVERY LITTLE BITE WAS DIVINE. The oysters with tomato jam, celery relish and thai basil were a perfect start to the meal. The short rib is an absolute flavor bomb and the eggplant nigiri is incredibly simple, yet perfect. I wish I would have written down everything we had but I wanted to just enjoy the journey and we sure did! The pork belly with aji amarillo, corn relish, pickled blackberry was a completely unexpected flavor combination and the pork belly melted in our mouths. There were also absolutely sublime nigiri bites of salmon toro, tuna, ocean bass and two perfect tuna handrolls. The hama chili with yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili and orange supreme was probably one of the most interesting dishes I have ever had the opportunity to enjoy. The sake is outstanding as well. The service is impeccable here and Jerry was very helpful (I don't know if it was Jared or Jerry but he was awesome!) What an incredibly unique, pleasurable experience. From the complimentary valet (how awesome!!) to the greeting staff and hosts at the front. We felt so welcomed the moment we walked in and like they were actually excited to have us in with our little one (unfortunately, not so common in places). Uchi is a must visit when it comes to upscale fine dining. They've mastered the art of fresh caught flavors mixed with various elements that truly make each plate shine. The service is absolutely incredible. Very professional and knowledgeable staff that clearly present each dish with full details as well as the proper way to consume each dish for maximum enjoyability. Even the complimentary valet service up front took great care of our car and arrived in a timely manner. The place is decorated beautifully and has such an inviting and buzzing ambiance. Some of my recommended highlight that we ordered were the Hama chili, Walu Walu, Unagi, Gyutoro, Akami Te, scallop nigiri, and the fried milk dessert. The final bill came out to about as much as a Costco trip but you should definitely celebrate a special milestone occasion here or try their happy hour if you can get a seat. We literally ordered almost everything off the menu, including some things that the waiters recommended that were off menu. It was a cozy place and the service was amazing. We went during happy hour and got the happy hour cocktails and they were great but ended up ordering most of the nigiri sushi on their regular dinner menu. I had an amazing meal here on a recent Friday night. Make reservations, I made mine a couple weeks in advance and still ran into limitations. We sat outside and I loved the setting. We tried a bit of everything and wasn't disappointed, we mostly went with recommendations but the meals were well flavored with very fresh fish - this isn't a place that will have soy sauce on the table as the fish and fresh flavors are all you need. Only issue was pace of meal...it took nearly 2 hours for all of our food to arrive (plates were spread out but there was a major lag at the end). Absolutely loved the Houston location so couldn't wait to try Dallas! The set up was much more open and comfortable at this location where Houston felt more crowded in a smaller area. The only negative was the dining room got visibly smoky when tables would order the a5. Even tables across the room would cause smoke which ruined the smells and ambiance of the restaurant as we experienced our omakase. Hopefully the restaurant can get a better ventilation or an inventive plating system to help manage this problem. The waitstaff is extremely attentive though at times the food was slow. We spent a total of 2.5 hours dining and much was spent waiting between courses. The allergy friendliness was impeccable and every dish brought out the staff listed the allergy free title and what modifications were made which reassured me of my safe experience. A5 wagyu with caviar - melts in your mouth delish. Would recommend for sure Short rib nigiri - tender but was overshadowed by the wagyu Inari roll - crispy, chewy, such a fun play on what I perceive to be a basic ingredient. I had a near perfect experience at Uchi. Service was stellar and each dish was great. Fish was fresh and flavorful, nearly melt-in-your-mouth which is expected of a high end sushi restaurant. There is a lot of creativity and melding of flavors and textures in their dishes which helps set Uchi apart from other sushi restaurants. My favorite dish of the night was the scallop under their hot tastings menu. The scallop was seared perfectly and paired with a beurre blanc sauce and green tomatoes. The mixture of all these flavors along with the sunflower furikake was to die for. Everything else was phenomenal and there are several must try desserts to end the night with - fried milk, coconut tapioca, and honey toast are some I would recommend. The main negatives would be the size of each cut of fish and the price for each item. Nigiri is much smaller compared to many other places, especially for what you are paying. But if you can look past this point then Uchi is a must try experience. read more

Wow wow wow!!!!! Moving to Texas 10 years ago, I've always heard about Uchi. While I don't mind spending a little more on food, I've been waiting for the right person to have this experience with. My best friend is visiting me from California and we wanted to celebrate her birthday with a nice dinner. There are plenty of great sushi restaurants in LA, so I wasn't sure if this would meet her sushi standards. We searched for a reservation for Austin the week before but there were none. Luckily, we were heading to Dallas and they had a 545 opening for bar seating. Boy, what a treat this was. The booking online was easy peasy. Once we arrived to the restaurant, valet was complimentary, another plus. They started us off with a palette cleaner, Which was some kind of blackberry mint sorbet--YUM! I'd eat a bowl of that if I could. We chose a couple of starters (madai crudo, smoked beets). HIGHLY recommend madai crudo--so light and refreshing with a punch of flavor. I also enjoyed the foie gras and uni. Uni was very sweet. We did 12 piece chefs tasting menu, curated by Chef Daniel who is SPECTACULAR. He elevated the whole experience x10. I recommend sitting at sushi bar when possible as you get to interact with the chef, I've only had great experiences when doing so. Plus, it's so fun to see how they artfully prepare the food. I feel like this place is just thriving off its old reputation from many years ago when there wasn't much competition in dfw for sushi. I base my reviews off of the food, but the service was great, staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food here is punching way below its price point. Many other sushi or izakaya places are serving better quality dishes at a fraction of the price. The nigiri was on the small and thin side - flavor was good though, but again, at these prices, i expect amazing sushi, not just good. All the small plates were also just decent - halibut, wagyu, Brussel sprouts, etc. Nothing particularly stood out. The brussel sprouts were drenched in a little too much seasoning, it was like drinking sauce. Expect to spend around 100-250 per person here. First time here and we loved it! We went for an anniversary and made reservations at 5 pm, they were not too busy. There is complimentary valet at the front which is really nice! The food was delicious! All of it is good, though I would say in general that the crudo, makimono, or fish centered dishes and desserts are exceptional compared to the wagyu and gyutoro options. They gave us the sea bream crudo as we were celebrating our anniversary and this was our favorite dish. The sea bream was fresh and cool, and the pear was sweet and crunchy. There was a nice sweet and adicic sauce on top and the balance of flavors was so good. There was texture contrast from the crunchy pear and soft fish, and the taste was soooo flavorful throughout with every bite. So good!! Would definitely recommend this! We also tried the walu walu (happy hour) and gyutoro (happy hour). The walu walu was nice and tender with a crunchy sear from the wood, and the sauce was really nice too. We liked this dish. The gyutoro in our opinion was okay but not special, you can find wagyu elsewhere for a similar taste. It was good but again not special. For the main menu we ordered the kabocha (pumpkin tempura), chicken karaage, crunchy salmon makimono, and negitoro makimono. The tempura came out hot and fresh, the batter was thin and crunchy and not greasy at all. The pumpkin was sweet and soft, really good tempura at only $6! The karaage was amazing!!! It was so flavorful and it was the best karaage I've had in Dallas. It was crunchy yet tender and juicy inside, but the batter had some peanut(?) flavor. The sauce was tangy and really complimented the chicken well. So good!!! The two makimono rolls were also great! Both had texture contrast, the rice was flavorful, and the nori was fresh and crunchy. I preferred the negitoro as the smoked green onions added a smoky flavor in every bite, and the truffle oil was a nice solid flavor that united everything. Both were really amazing! Would get it again! Now to the single piece sushi pieces, we tried the medium fatty tuna (chutoro), unagi, and crab nigiri. The fatty tuna melted in your mouth, and the crab was so buttery. They were both good, but for the price of $16 and $15, I thought some of their other options were better. However, the unagi is only $5 and was so good! The unagi had so much sauce and was very tender, and they gave a large piece too. I think this was definitely worth it! We also got the kinako nabe and the hot rock, and for the hot rock, while good, again you can get similar wagyu elsewhere. The kinako nabe was weird for me, there were tons of mushrooms and it was with crunchy rice, but I think there was too much sauce or vinegar as it was too acidic for me. This was my least favorite dish. For dessert, we got the fried milk and coconut tapioca. Both were AMAZING!! Like SO GOOD!! The fried milk is crunchy and the inside is literally sweet milk but a little thicker, and it is served with some milk ice cream(?), thin chocolate bark, a chocolate ganache, and a toffee crumble with a super dark chocolate spread on the plate. There was so much texture contrast and everything went together so well. You could pick different parts to eat and combine to change the taste, but it always so balanced and delicious. LOVED IT! The same can be said about the coconut tapioca, the middle is lychee sherbert and the outside is like this whipped coconut milk so it forms an airy and light cream. It was mixed with chia seeds with gave it a nice crunchy texture contrast, soft tapioca pearls, and hazel and blueberries. Again everything went together so well, we loved both desserts! For service, it is absolutely stellar. Taylor helped us, and they were so attentive and informative. Whenever we finished a plate, it was taken away immediately and they always explained each dish they gave to us. They also brought out any utensils you needed, checked on drinks, and checked on each customer thoroughly. Really amazing service. Ambiance is upscale, I see a lot of people going here after work to have meetings or chat. Overall I had an amazing experience! Definitely focus on crudo, makimono, but the karaage and unagi deserve special mention. Desserts were awesome! read more

Haven't been to Uchi in a long time, but my client requested. She is vegetarian and appreciates their menu. I met up with her at the bar, and she insisted I share the lions mane mushroom with her. It was delicious. I ordered some nigiri and sashimi. Very fresh and tasty, I tried a couple of her veggie rolls and really impressed. We each had our own fried milk because why not.
