    KATSU CURRY UDON
    Lynn N.

I went to Udon Mugizo with my family and we had a good time. I had a big table, but got help checking in by staff to join the waitlist. It was about 15-20 min before we were seated, and inside has ample space with wooden tables and traditional decor. We placed our order and the food came out soon after. I really enjoyed my curry udon, it was the right consistency and had good balance of flavor. The katsu was tender without being greasy. My partner got the tonkatsu udon, but we agreed that it was too salty. Otherwise, we had a great time here and would definitely go again!

Came here on a weeknight. We put ourselves on the wait-list and got seated earlier than expected. In front there is a sign for the tonkatusu deluxe so I kinda new what I wanted by the time I walked into the restaurant. It was delicious but in hindsight it was more ramen than udon (aside for the noodles of course). The broth was richer and more flavorful than many I've had. Chasu was a bit tough but the pork belly was super soft. The noodles were perfectly chewy. There was a whole egg, spinach, shrimp tempura. So much food but somehow I finished.

Clean restroom with baby changing table. Kids meal comes with fries and udon without sauce. Kids utensils were actually metal, not plastic and bibs were provided. A kid's plastic open cup is provided. Indoor and outdoor seating Delicious Mentaiko udon is salty and rich. Regular size is more than enough portion. Everything tastes delicious. Also got the corn tempura which I didn't know what to expect- the corn kernels make a patty. Tempura is on the side for the curry udon. Ordering the large size resulted in leftovers. Chicken karage is huge chunks and comes with mayonnaise and lemon. Spice can be added.

MENTAI CREAM SAUCE UDON, very good.

This topped my expectations and then exceeded. Allow me to explain. I've always wanted to visit an Udon Mugizo. It just happened to be today that we got to go visit one and I was pleasantly surprised. From the quality and speed of the food to the prompt service, my visit exceeded my expectations. Firstly, their Signature Udon, it's not like anything I've ever experienced and it was great! That creaminess, that umami-ness, that well balanced saltiness, it was very good and I'd definitely get it again. My wife got the Tonkatsu Udon and that in itself was very good. It wasn't just replacing ramen with udon noodles, it was more to enhance and make it all work. We ordered a kids udon and the quality of the fried corn and multiple items prepared seemed thoughtful. We also ordered the Udon Meshi, which was good, but the other items shined. Service was great. Granted, we were the first in the door, but we were greeted by multiple wait staff and water level was always kept above half. The restaurant itself has great ambiance. Tables that seat many people comfortable and some tables that allow for a more romantic setting. Parking may get tricky, but a worthy spot to visit.

Ordered the Niki udon (warm) - good but not great, broth wasn't as filling and creamy as 3 years ago, and I wasn't a fan of the onion to beef ratio (way too many onions). Interested in trying the cold udon next time that my friend got (she said "once I went cold, I never went back") They seated us at the high tables in the front and we found out we could easily turn off and on the lightbulbs in the decor hanging in the middle of our table lol

My perfect comfort meal! This Mountain View location on Castro Street is cozy and warm, an overall good vibe for a meal and conversation with friends and family. The server was super patient and nice, and the food comes out very quickly. There's a large variety of items on the menu, from udons (brothy, creamy, cold) to bento boxes to rice bowls. Everything looked and sounded delicious, making it hard to pick! I ended up ordering the mentai cream sauce udon, and boy was I happy with my choice! The bowl comes with cod roe, parmesan cheese, tempura bits, and seaweed flakes. The cream sauce was super savory and umami, subtle seafood flavor without tasting fishy. If you can't picture it, it's alfredo-adjacent but seafood style and much better. The udon was chewy and al dente, perfectly coated by the sauce in each bite. Super comforting meal, and I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

Great experience overall, no complaints from me. The food is tasty and high quality. Service was great as well - just the right amount of attention, including keeping our drinks and water filled. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we went for lunch, and I appreciate that they let us stay quite a bit longer to hang out even though we were too full to order more food. If you like larger portions, definitely go for the large. They mentioned it's 50% larger than their regular size, and generally only a few more dollars for each dish. The two of us who had the Nebeyaki Udon really enjoyed it. My only wish is that they would put the tempura shrimp on the side so that it doesn't get too soggy. One of us had the Niku Bukkake Udon and really enjoyed that as well, especially since it was a warm day outside. The restaurant itself is nice and clean, and the seating is spacious, allowing for a feeling of some privacy. I appreciate they don't pack everyone in together.

Mentai Cream Sauce udon and poached egg were so good! The roe was nice and salty which added so much flavor to the cream sauce. Friendly wait staff and order came out fast!

The restaurant's interior brick clad walls and the warm soft ambient lighting provide a comfy rustic feel. The seating layout leaves a wide walkway in the center of the dinning room, allowing the dinning experience feel intimate even when people are seated nearby. The service was excellent. It was our first time at the Udon Mugizo, so the server offered to walk us through the menu. He explained the differences between dishes and their sizes. He even offered to show us images on his hand held ordering device since we were debating over what dishes to get. We were celebrating a birthday and the birthday celebrant received a free dessert. Kind, patient and helpful. Excellent customer service. The Order: Crispy Onigiri Bites -Chopped up pieces of well done pork Chashu with some delicious sauce and fresh green onion, all on top of crispy rice. A great starter. Tonkatsu Udon Deluxe (no spice) -The broth was well balanced. Full of flavor and not too salty. The shrimp tempura wonderful, even though it was slightly submerged so it was as crispy as I hoped. The deluxe comes with a cube of braised pork belly, and it was so tender and sweet. I could eat an entire plate of it! The noodles were perfect, soft and flavorful. The egg was sweet, but I wish I would have eaten it sooner, as I prefer the egg to be a creamier. I definitely recommend the Deluxe. Vegetable Tempura & Broccoli Tempura -A beautiful and tasty assortment of pieces. The corn was a stand out since it was off the Cobb, being held together by the tempura batter. It was delicious, with a batter that was not overly thick. Both were nice side dishes during our dinner. Kurogoma Mochi Ice Cream -The mochi may tend to stick to the paper lining, and picking them up with your fingers can be slightly sticky. The nutty flavor from the black sesame ice cream is fantastic. The pairing with the sweet chewy mochi exterior is a wonderful pairing. Matcha (Green Tea) Ice Cream -Delicious and creamy. Not overly sweet. A nice subtle creamy flavor. A great way to end the meal. The food and the service truly make this place stand out. Everything had a well balanced flavor, with the components to each dish (appetizer/side dish, soup, dessert) having a wonderful flavor journey through each bite, as the various ingredients take turns on center stage as you work your way through each dish. I will be coming back to try more of the menu, and I recommend you do too.

    Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon

I was never originally a fan of udon and usually preferred pho or ramen, but after several visits to Udon Mugizo, I can honestly say this is the best udon place I've been to. I really like the atmosphere here. It's comfortable, relaxed, and feels like a great place for a date or a casual meal. The tonkotsu udon is one of my favorites, but I'm especially a fan of the salmon spinach cream sauce udon and the mentai cream sauce udon. The flavors are really well balanced -- not overly salty, but never bland either. The portions are also generous, and I always leave feeling full and satisfied. For someone who never considered themselves an udon fan, the fact that I've already been here three times probably says a lot. Definitely a local favorite and a place I'll keep coming back to.

I visited Udon Mugizo again and always enjoy coming back here. The outdoor seating was really nice at first, but some stuff from the trees kept falling into my water and even my udon, so I ended up moving inside. I always get the tonkotsu deluxe with spice and it never disappoints. The noodles are great and the broth is rich and flavorful. It can get a bit salty, so I don't recommend adding the extra spice powder they provide. Will be back!!

Came here on a Tuesday at 12:30pm; there were a few people standing ahead of me waiting. We were offered a table outside. In the interest of time, we accepted, even though it was a bit cold outside. Unfortunately, the standing patio heater wasn't working that was next to our table. Not a huge deal, but would've been nice while we waited for our udon. I ordered the tonkotsu udon and the broth was SO rich & flavorful. The udon noodles were chewy and fresh. Great portion size, I would definitely return. It's nice that there are multiple locations in the Bay Area.

The service was attentive and their in house made udon was perfectly textured chewy. I actually prefer the cold udon since it's more flavorful and the udon keeps its bouncy texture compared to the hot udons. The tempura was honestly really mid. The tempura batter was extremely thick, heavy, and a little oily. Would recommend the cold Niki Udon

Udon Mugizo - Mountain View Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Udon Mugizo - Mountain View

Is the vegetable udon actually vegetarian/vegan? Or does it have any sort of fish/meat in the soup?

Do you have outdoor dining at dinner time as of 4/1/22?

    Yes

    Is the outdoor patio dog-friendly?

Yep. Dogs are chilling by their parents on the patio.

Any vegetarian or vegan options ? do we have vegan broth for any of ramen?

Hello, Thank you for your question! Vegetable udon will be coming soon!…

Are any of the broths vegetarian?

No. In fact there really isn't anything vegetarian on the menu. My husband and I went for outdoor dining sometime back and they had to special order a meal for me which ended up being tempura over rice.

Do you have any vegan options?

There are options of pork, beef curry and fish udon broth, also cream sauce udon. Choice of Agedashi tofu served with fish based sauce is very popular.Currently only Edamame is our vegan option.

    Do they outdoor sitting?

Hello - Yes we have outdoor seating. Thank you.

Are there any vegetarian options/ broth for udon?

Hello - Sorry - no options at this time. Working on it. Thank you.

Are there gluten free options? Are the Soba Noodles gluten free?

Hello - The soba noodles are not gluten free. At this time we don't offer gluten free products. Thank you for contacting us. Management.

    Does their food have MSG?

I called them, and they said that their food has naturally occurring MSG, but otherwise they don't add it--except to their curry and cream broths; they do add it to those.

My favorite poke was the spicy mango tuna--so flavorful. They even include a mini bottle of soy sauce, which was such a cute touch. There are plenty of sides to choose from, and you get a really good amount of rice. The sushi boat is definitely on the pricier side, and I was a bit skeptical at first because of the packaging. I wasn't sure if the quality would live up to the presentation, but it absolutely did. The packaging is not only fun but also super functional--perfect for taking to the beach, a park, or a party.

They have some appetizers and drinks on the happy hour menu, so we tried the gyoza, mochi and side tempura. The mochi had a house made sauce glaze that was sweet and salty, and came with nori as a wrap. The texture of the mochi was really soft and chewy. The gyoza were really crispy with a soft interior. We ended up ordering a second round of them. The tempura was nicely fried with not too much batter. The shrimp was really succulent and I liked that they have mushroom tempura too. From their regular menu, we ordered a bunch of food. I tried the yaki-onigiri ochazuke with salmon, fried chicken skin, the eggplant and various skewers. The fried chicken skin was really nice and crispy, and came with a ponzu sauce and mayo to dip in. The yaki onigiri was nicely grilled and still had crispy bits when submerged in the soup. I was really excited that they have shishamo/smelt. It was nicely roasted and didn't have any overtly fishy flavor. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their food. I'd definitely come back here to try their other dishes!

The standout, though, was the egg. It was easily one of the best-cooked ramen eggs I've had outside of Japan--perfect texture and absolutely nailed. My only minor criticism would be the broth. It had some really nice garlic notes, but compared with how well everything else came together, it tasted just a little flat.
