Mugizo is the local king of udon. Tried many others, but this one is on point. Started with the tempura tasting platter, it was very good, but disappointed that it was not freshly out of the fryer. It already cooled off and did not have that crispy crunch. The chicken karaage was very delicious with the right amount of soy, garlic, ginger. It was crispy and very juicy. Winner! The udon, great broth, full of umami flavor and well balanced. The noodles were chewy and had a nice bite. The katsu donburi has good flavor, but the pork was a little tough. It's average. I've come to this location twice so far. Once was a very busy Saturday. This time there was no wait on a Wednesday evening for my party of 3. I've gone to the San Jose location many times and they've been pretty consistent! This location is much smaller and more serene vibes compared to the San Jose one. I've tried their tonkotsu udon which was alright for me but once I tried their mentai cream sauce udon, I started getting it every single time! It's so flavorful and creamy without being overly heavy. Highly recommend this amazing dish. Had some of the salmon spinach cream sauce udon which was good too, but definitely has less flavor compared to the mentai cream sauce udon. Edit: Hi Yoshi, since you mentioned onsen tamago, I would hope that you know how one would taste. It suppose to have soft but white egg white with a runny and slight creamy egg yolk. I went to Udon Muzigo around lunchtime and the experience was smooth from start to finish. When I arrived, no one was immediately at the host stand, so I started entering my info into the machine, but within seconds the host appeared and welcomed me. He asked if I preferred inside or outside seating, and when I said inside, he initially suggested the communal table. We were glad it was still open around 3pm when many restaurants close for their mid day break. We were greeted warmly and was seated. It was a small restaurant, but spacious and enough seats to manage. They use ingredients that are not typical in usual Japanese restaurants. In their assorted tempura plate, they included shaved radish and ginger to add to the dipping sauce. They also included squid in their assorted tempura. Their agedashi tofu was very unique. Their sauce was deep and included ginger - I never had anything like it before. Lastly their udon was really good. The broth was deep and flavourful, but very clear. They also had a tonkotsu broth udon. When trying a spoonful, I was surprised by the depth of flavour it had. Would you pay $41 for two Udon dishes for lunch? Came here Mon Oct 30 , 2023 around noon for lunch, having walked from Kaiser Permanente lab office on Castro several blocks down the street. Cold day so nobody in their right mind was eating outside. Cozy cramped quarters but generally good ambiance in a clean setting. Ordered at 12:03, and received dishes by 12:19pm. My $21 Tonkatsu Udon deluxe came with pork and fish broth, several chunks of pork chasu, shrimp tempura, a boiled egg, garlic, green onions, spinach, and fish powder. A bit oily, but not too salty, and huge amount of udon noodles, some the best that I've ever tasted. Wife's $20 Nabeyaki Udon came with a poached egg, 2 shrimp tempura, chicken, fish cake, maitake mushrooms, green onions in a clay pot. Wife always complains of her dishes being too salty. Usually she leaves a pool of too salty broth. Not this time, as everything was perfect. She slurped all of it down to the last drop. Not sure if the clay pot made much difference in taste, as no crusted rice hanging onto the side. No need to buy a large bowl when a regular bowl will do just fine. No need to get the Tonkatsu Udon deluxe, as it comes with pork belly, which is basically fat like in bacon, and probably shortened my lifespan a few days with its artery clogging properties. I had never had it before so wasn't sure what to expect. It's literally my new favorite alcoholic beverage. The best way I can describe it is a sweeter and more grape-y white wine. For our appetizer, we shared tempura gyoza. The filling inside was lovely and it was fried to perfection. For my main, I ordered a regular Mentai cream sauce udon. The worker recommended it to me and boy am I so happy she did! It was absolutely amazing. I was a little skeptical at first because I thought it was going to be fishy. It was cheesy, rich, salty and just perfect. It was super filling. I felt like it was Japanese and Italian mixed into one dish. I'd literally come back just for that and the wine. We came on a Sunday noon, less crowded than one day ago when we passed by on Saturday. We chose an outdoor dining table because there was a street performance across the roadway. We didn't need to wait to get seats for two people. We ordered a Mentai Cream Sauce Udon, a Nabeyaki Udon, and a Yaki Onigiri. Mentai Cream Sauce Udon: umami flavor of seasoned roes, creamy sauce; like a mix of Japanese and Italian taste. Very filling. Nabeyaki: much lighter compared to the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon. The soup was with smoked flavor. This Udon came with two pieces of tempura shrimp. They were crispy on the top where was not soaked in the soup. Yaki Onigiri: highly recommend to finish it right after it's served. Otherwise the rice may become dry and hard when it cools down. Went here to celebrate my birthday with a few friends and it was pretty cool. This is the third location of Udon Mugizo that I have visited and the noodles are the best. Definitely recommend getting the cream mentai Udon with egg. A friend of mine tried the lychee soda and it was honestly not as good as it looked. It had a cool light in it, though, which was a cool extra thing. Staff was super helpful. The service was honestly the fastest I've ever had in any of the locations and the vibe in this location was the best as well since it had like a good wooden feel, and the seating area looked like there was more space than any if the other locations. read more

Went here on a Saturday night with some friends. A nice thing is that you can get on a wait list ahead of time on Yelp. Luckily the hostess seated me as the rest of my party were parking their cars. Interior is vibey, dark, and hipstery with the retro Edison bulbs. Perfect for a date night. We're big fans of the San Jose location but sad to say this place is just not as good. Because we went around 8pm it wasn't busy at all. It was cold outside so we all got the Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon. We also got a corn tempura and shrimp to share. The udon broth itself was underwhelming and a bit too light compared to their San Jose counterpart. They definitely skimped on the meat here and there wasn't a difference between the large and regular other than extra noodles. The other gripe was as the server was giving us our tempura order early, she slammed the plates down and then proceeded to quickly flick food off the dirty plate in hopes that we wouldn't notice that one of the plates wasn't washed properly. We had to tell another server and she was really apologetic about it which is why I gave this place 3 stars instead of 2. Overall food came out quickly but it wasn't that enjoyable given the dirty plate and lackluster broth and skimpy meat. We're much closer to the San Jose location so probably will be going there instead. read more

There's a decent amount of seating and lots of space to move around, so try to come a little earlier to get seated (we came at 5). + Warm Tempura Udon (8/10): It was pretty okay. I expected a little more difference between this place and a regular sushi/japanese place, but it tasted the same as any other place. It was a little on the saltier side. Loved the amount of tempura given and the portion in general was very large just for one person. + Corn Tempura (4/10): A serious let down. I think they use canned corn, and the way they fry it makes the corn a little hard and uncomfortable to eat. It's very under salted and doesn't taste good enough for me to order again. We were seated right away on a Saturday evening at 6:30. Within the hour the indoor space had filled and there were people waiting. Parking on the street can be difficult later into the evening and the area is popular and filled with shops and restaurants. What we ordered: Assorted Tempura, Tempura Gyoza, Tonkatsu Udon Deluxe, and Curry Udon. Everything was delicious! The pork kakuni piece was meaty - not all fat like you get from other restaurants. There was definitely a good amount of meat and my partner who has a healthy appetite, wasn't able to finish his bowl. I'm a big Japanese curry fan and I'd give their curry here 4/5 stars. It has a spiciness to it, but it's a little sweeter than I would have liked.
