NYC is teeming with amazing Italian restaurants. I've always been dubious about the ones in Little Italy since they mainly seem to draw tourists. Yet after encountering long waits at multiple other restaurants on a Saturday around noon, we decided to use our relative's visit as an opportunity to try a Little Italy establishment. When we entered, we were the only customers there, which should have already been a sign. I was struck by the strong Clorox smell, which is not particularly pleasant or appetizing. Despite the relative emptiness, it took a very long time for the bread basket to arrive. Normally I wouldn't have care about a bread basket that much, but I had two very hungry and impatient toddlers clamoring for food. The bread itself was fine and the garlicky olive oil quite good. Umberto's, like many Little Italy competitors, offers a lunch menu. We orders the meat lasagna, the eggplant parm with linguine, and the spaghetti with meatballs. The lasagna was extremely oily, sparse in meat, and a somewhat soggy unshaped mess. The eggplant parm was also drenched in excess oil from frying the eggplant and the linguine and sauce lacked flavor. The spaghetti meatballs dish--plated separately for my two kids--only came with two meatballs (one per kid). The meatball and pasta both lacked flavor, and the meatballs could have been moister. Both the linguine and spaghetti tasted like they came out of a cheap big box retailer's private label box. Overall, the food was cooked crudely and carelessly. The food could have used more seasoning, and the ingredients did not taste high quality. Service was friendly and attentive in keeping our waters filled. High chairs were available. I was annoyed to see that the bill automatically applied a gratuity and there was no disclosure whatsoever that there was a credit card fee until after I brought it up proactively upon seeing a new total once I'd already submitted my credit card.

Up skill living, but Penny's budget. The staff will cater to you like you're one of the New York City's top elite. Find dining options, seafood galore!!! Special treatment is a given for everyone who visits is treated like family or friends, beautiful dining area, friendly stuff in the heart of Little Italy what could be more New York than that?? Can you say WoW! For the price and value- well worth a visit.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a delicious venue! I can't thank enough Dumy and chef Benny! We came with friends on a Saturday night, they found a table for 4 of us in no time. the stuff was so welcoming and friendly. The food was so delicious, from the fresh oysters to the baked claims, octopus salad and the desserts! the soups: clam chowder and lobster bisque we're out of this world! THANK YOU REALLY! Best Italian restaurant in town! The ambience is perfect also. Right amount of music, enough to hear each other talking!

An iconic Little Italy restaurant that promises and delivers excellent Italian dishes and crafted cocktails. Today we had their Lobster fra diavolo and the eggplant Parmesan. They are #1 in my opinion for fra diavolo! Their raw oysters are fresh and chilled to perfection. Eggplant parm was a bit under salted, but still good. Seating outside on a summer day is a NYC staple! Our waiter was courteous and the food was delicious! Their warm italian bread and oil starters is divine!

I went to Umberto's Clam House on the day after Valentine's Day. The restaurant still had the special menu both food and drinks. It wasn't busy at all maybe because of rain at that day. The reason why I picked this place is because it became infamous for its connection to the mafia "Crazy Joe" Gallo. I wasn't hungry so all food I ordered were light but can filled me up. I had Oysters, raw clams, Lobster Bisque and fish salad. I enjoy a Valentine Prosecco, Moscato and good-sweet Tiramisu. Raw bars were fresh, and the soup was delicious! Jess was our server, and she is very friendly and nice. We paid by cash to avoid and additional 3% if we use a credit card. There are many Italian neighborhoods in NYC and little Italy is one of my favorite areas to go especially during feast time.

Great lunch spot in Little Italy! We just stumbled upon this restaurant as we were walking through Little Italy and are so happy we tried it out. The patio area was perfect, especially for the beautiful day we were having. My husband and I shared the half dozen oysters which were so delicious (10/10 recommend!). We also shared a plate of the Shrimp Scampi which was equally as delicious. The pasta tasted so fresh too! We also had a glass of red wine- I believe the Chianti they had. Service was good with our server always on top of everything. Very kind and attentive. All in all, it was the perfect Italian meal in Little Italy. Truly everything we were looking for.

The Food was amazing- and dining alfresco was a unique and fun lunch! We enjoyed fettuccine Alfredo with sautéed shrimp and Penne Al la vodka it was all Delicious! The service was spot on. The meal was overall a great experience! The atmosphere was inviting and positive.

My wife and I were in New York to see a concert that was unfortunately canceled. We decided to make the best of it and headed to Little Italy for lunch at Umberto's. We ordered the Margherita pizza and sangria both were absolutely over-the-top good! The highlight, beyond the food, was when the owner, Robert, came out to chat with us about the history of the area and the restaurant. It turned a great meal into a truly memorable experience. Thank you, Robert and the entire Umberto's staff, for your warm hospitality. We can't wait to come back!

Not quite the Little Italy experience I was hoping for! We walked in around mid afternoon on a Friday, and it was empty inside (although most restaurants on the street were empty at that hour). Our table of 10 was immediately seated. The service was good, no complaints there. I probably would have preferred to sit outside because the AC was blasting inside. I wasn't impressed with my Pesto Gnocchi dish. The gnocchi was too thick and dry, and the pesto didn't quite do it for me. On the other hand, my husband raved about the Chicken Parmesan the entire rest of our trip! Our table also got Bruschetta, which was just ok. Overall, great service. The food was hit and miss with our table.

Came in around 5:30pm and it was super empty, tables are separated enough even tho the place isn't super big. We had a pulsd voucher so that included an appetizer, 2 main courses, 1 dessert and a pitcher of sangria. For appetizer we got the calamari, it wasn't crunchy and a little oily (both the sauce and the calamari itself) but both tasted good. For main course I got the linguini with salmon and my bf got the chicken parm with pasta. The salmon pasta was tasty and the chicken was great, super cheesy. The sangria was a great amount (6 glasses approx.) and the apple on it were super crunchy which I love. For dessert we got the cannoli (didn't get a pic) but it was okay. Crunchy and sweet which is good enough. Overall it seems like a tourist trap but the food is very good. I would recommend checking it out. Gratuity and tax wasn't included so thats the only part of the bill you need to take care at the end.

I was really excited to try this place! have my best friend visiting and wanted to try this place. We had reservations at 6, even tho I requested outside, they said no tables bcz was all booked, place was totally empty when we arrived. Idk if was bcz the Pulsd voucher we got, but food was totally a disappointment. Service was nice, the Sangria delicious just some of the dishes mostly. I got the he octopus on the Grill, was mostly hard, couldn't eat it. My bud got the bruschetta, and they were amazing. Then he got a pasta, couldn't eat it bcz was extra salty. I got the Branzino, come either with steam vegetables or side of pasta. I really was enjoying my branzino, but find some areas RAW, pasta was hard and not tasty. He got a cheesecake from a box, with some weird garnish. Well service was fine, drinks amazing including my expresso martini. The server/bartender tried to have my friend another dish, but after we saw how the kitchen staff saw us from sending food bck, we preferred to just not grab anything, so far from all the places from Pulsd, this has been the really NOT WORTH IT plus was empty, see why now. Pulsd app says TIP and taxes wouldn't be added to the check at the end. But truly the guy made sure he got a 20% himself.

I came with a party of 9 on a Saturday for a birthday dinner, there were 2 or 3 other tables in the restaurant but the waiter was slow to greet us and take our orders. The birthday girl wanted to order family style, but the portions really aren't large enough to do so (without ordering extra food): We shared two pizzas (Margherita and vodka), calamari, penne vodka, pappardelle bolognese, chicken Milanese and chicken parmigiana (all between $20-$30 each). The food was good, but not particularly memorable. Similarly, service was fine but the wait staff is not overly attentive and the meal was served at a very leisurely pace.

The server was very nice and the restaurant itself was a cute spot, the food was not good for the price. The Clams were gritty and squid tasted like they went bad. The people with me who got the gnocchi & linguine meatballs said that was good, but I would not recommend the seafood. read more

We ordered some clams and calamari. The bread was delicious as well as the garlicky dipping sauce. Service was good and friendly. We also ordered an old fashioned that we could not finish, (was not an old fashioned or certainly not what we were used too) but it tasted pretty awful. The food was okay with the exception of the bread and dipping sauce which was phenomenal. I wanted to love this but it just didn't happen. Old school Italian place maybe it was an off day. read more

Stopped in here while wandering around little Italy. There are many restaurants to choose from, many with staff beckoning you in. We picked Umberto's because of the specials listed on their board outside. Funny enough, when we went to order, the waiter needed to double check that they could do the specials which did seem a bit odd to us. The answer was yes, which was good since that was why we stopped here. The pesto gnocchi with burrata was delicious and perfect for lunch. The tables were spaced out so you didn't feel like you were on top of any one. read more

Best Linguine and Clams ever!! I never turned down an opportunity to jump on the subway and head to Umberto's for lunch. Also the site of the infamous Joe Gallo murder in 1972. And after, you can walk over to Francis's Bakery for some Italian deserts. read more

We bring our SoCal groups to Umbertos upon our arrival at Newark every first week of Christmas, and for decades it has been our first and most delicious impression of NYC. They are hospitable and the food is terrific! read more

Great food and service. Vodka pasta was amazing along with the appetizers and desserts (all home made). Rodrigo was also one of the most amazing servers i've had he definitely made it worth the visit and i will be coming back next time im in nyc read more

I was on my way to Little Italy to get some canoli's and decided to stop by someplace for dinner. This place piqued my interest because of its mafia history. We stopped by here and were the only ones in the restaurant, which was kind of good since we could enjoy some quiet time. The servers were attentive, and our food arrived quickly. Came on a Friday around 6pm during San Gennaro. They had a stall outside that had a line, but the restaurant still had plenty of seats. I tried the blue point oysters on half shell and clams on the half shell. The shucking could've been cleaner as there was shell debris in both the oysters and clams. Not the original location where the famous gangster rub-out took place, but not far. It's a smallish restaurant, with a wide variety of excellent seafood, and a great staff. I had a reservation for 5 and 11 of us showed up. They didn't care at all. The baked clams were delicious (but served super-hot --in temperature not spice-- so be careful picking them up). History

Established in 1970.

In 1970, 35-year-old Umberto Ianniello strolled around New york City's Little Italy and realized there were only a couple of seafood restaurants in the entire neighborhood. Named after the last Prince of Italy, Umberto kept the idea to himself until he spoke to his parents about his idea of opening a restaurant! His parents encouraged Umberto to realize his dream, and in 1972, Umberto Ianniello opened his first restaurant, Umberto's Clam House on Mulberry Street in New York City. With an unpretentious atmosphere, and an enduring concern for freshness Umberto worked tirelessly to achieve unprecedented quality and uniqueness at his restaurant. This came to fruition in their open kitchen (which became part of Umbertos alluring ambiance) and helped make Umbertos an overnight success! For over 40 years, Umbertos Clam House has served Little Italy and has established itself as an eating institution. Umbertos is a New York City landmark stop for Manhattanites, tourists and celebrities.

Meet the Manager: Wayne M.

In 2005, Mr. Ianniello passed his legacy to his son Robert Ianiello Jr. who has been working hard to protect the famous eatery. Robert Jr. says, "My father started Umbertos in the early 70's and helped revitalize and reinvent Little Italy. Umbertos Clam House quickly became a haven for people to enjoy great food while absorbing provocative NYC atmosphere. I'm proud to carry on my family's tradition of flavorful innovative Italian style cooking with a modern flair." There were only about five people ahead of us here, so we figured we'd be in and out with a couple of ready-made slices. Instead, it took nearly 30 minutes to get a single cheese slice that was already sitting behind the counter. The pizza itself was perfectly fine. The problem is the operation. There were around seven employees behind the counter, yet somehow everything moved at a glacial pace. One person took orders while a manager mostly stood around directing people to do tiny, unnecessary tasks instead of actually helping move the line. There was even someone dedicated to adding individual toppings to slices, painstakingly placing basil leaves one at a time, while dozens of customers waited. At one point, she even dropped a stack of pizza boxes, adding to the chaos. Meanwhile, slices would be ready but they'd call customers one at a time instead of handing out multiple completed orders. The result was a line of only five people turning into a backlog of roughly 25 people waiting for food. I've never seen a place with so many employees accomplish so little. If your business model is selling ready-made pizza by the slice, customers should not be waiting half an hour. The food wasn't bad, but the operational inefficiency was so frustrating that I wouldn't come back.

Never had one that tasted like that. It had lemon zest on it and I think might have been made with semolina or cornmeal. It was a cross between light /fluffy and dense. Simply perfect! I must say I was completely delighted with my food. Sitting at the counter was great because you can see the food actually being prepared. My neighbors were a party of 3. They ordered several items including the pancake. They seemed to be enjoying their meals. Bathroom was single use and fairly clean. Service was great. Food was hot, delish and priced appropriately. They don't take online reservations for groups over 5, so we called to make one for our group of 6. It was pretty busy Friday night, so would recommend. The service was great; they drew the cutest card when they found out it was my brother's birthday and let us bring a cake. And they also offered hair ties to the people with long hair. You order through an iPad which has a beautiful menu.

With tapioca and tofu chunks with somewhat of a horchata/soy milk base It was takeout style with seating options in front of there food stand where you could watch them pull the noodles in front of you.

I arrived at Umberto's Clam House in the evening. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by a very nice man outside. I was seated at a small table with my significant other. The atmosphere was very nice. There are candles placed on the table that give a very relaxed feeling. I was served an appetizer of a dozen baked clams. They were very delicious and definitely one of the best things on the menu. The staff were very quick with water, plates, and napkins. After a second serving of clams, fried calamari was served. It had the perfect texture. It was not too salty, nor was it too bland. The perfect balance of flavor. After, Joe, our waiter placed our entrées. I got baked ziti. The ziti came out shortly after. It was hot, and very delicious. The mozzarella cheese that blanketed the pasta was thick and cheesy. Very delicious. I had no complaints about the entrée. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Umberto's. The service was great. Nice, and speedy. The clams were out of this world! I'd reccomend to anybody who's a fan of sea food. I've been a huge fan of Italian cuisine for years, and can easily say this is one of the best experiences you can get. Easily a 5/5. read more

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT EVER WAIT HERE IF YOUR IN LITTLE ITALY. My mother had a Groupon for this place and it was horrible from service to food. The owner or whoever he is sits outside the restaurant barking at girls and people to come and eat his absolutely HORRIBLE food. They treated us like second class citizens due to the fact that we had a groupon. He told us we couldn't even sit outside because we had a groupon it was a HORRIBLE experience!!! I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. The food was terrible the service was terrible and the owner is an absolute jerk off. He even started at a woman's behind as we were eating and said " oh my god would you look at that" he was a real pig and a real sleezeball. I just went with a friend who gushed about their drinks and baked clams. We were greeted by Manny, who chatted us up. He then uttered a racially offensive command at me, to "wake up", though we had been conversing with Manny since we arrived. In the context of post COVID US race relations, I took that as an offense, and curtly replied back to it "Cinco minutos más", (5 minutes more to *sleep") assuming the male midget redskin was hispanophone. As for the food, the clams themselves were okay, and another staff member by the name of Franky was more genial and polite to me and my friend. Please watch your back if you are a BIPOC. Don't come here unless you want to be harrassed by drunk homeless people. The food is actually pretty good, but the service is horrible. They allow drunk homeless people to wander into the outdoor dining area and harass customers eating dinner! The staff just sit there and laugh as you're trying to enjoy your meal while drunk bums come up to your table and bother you! STAY AWAY!!! Go next door to Paesano and you'll have a much better dining experience! This place is FANTASTIC!!! I've been going here since I'm a baby and have never been disappointed once. This is my family's favorite spot to hit when we are in the city. GET THE BAKED CLAMS they are amazing and you can't get them this good anywhere else. Also, linguini with white clam sauce is delicious. Worming: the worst experience you can get on Mulberry street! The food is terrible , the service is awful, but what stroked me the most is the crazy host, who's literary attacked us on the street. My friend and I stopped by Umberto's after grabbing drinks at Sambuca's around 12am. I had the penne vodka and my friend got a chicken dish. They were nothing over the top or 'oh so' delicious. Didn't even go in. The bigmouth Maitre'd on the sidewalk told us he was Italian and he knew Italian food. This struck me as so ridiculous and desperate I just started to move on. The guy continued to berate my girlfriend and I as we walked away. So can't speak for the food, but pretty sure you can do better. read more

Anyone giving this place more than 2 stars is either an employee, or the friend of one of the owners. It's not the original Umberto's, no mobsters ever ate here, let alone got whacked here. It's the third location. The waiters are horrendous, and the food was terrible. A tourist trap of the worst order. read more

Keep on walking, don't be fooled by the free wine/sangria/pop or by the hustler coaxing you to come on in. Reading some of these comments, you may want to stick to your clams, and remove everything else from your menu. Had to put a star however this should be rated as Zero Stars! read more

aside from the location, there is absolutely nothing to distinguish this place from any red sauce slop house. i had heard of it mentioned by tony soprano's douchey neighbor so that should have been a clue to me but i went there again. never again. NY has so much more to offer. read more

Love heading to Umbertos when down in Little Italy. Never had a bad meal. Seafood dishes are always cooked perfectly. I have never had a better cooked and tasting Red Snapper outside of the Caribbean than I have had at Umbertos. Thanks for the great meals! read more
