Uncle Julio's has always been a favorite for our family. We met friends from out of town at the Oak Lawn location. We were all disappointed with our meal and service. The wait for our food was almost an hour and when it arrived it was warm, not hot. The manager came by and asked us about our meal and when we told him about the temperature of the food he just shrugged and mentioned something about a heat lamp and that he would check on things. What a disappointment, hope this is a problem with this location and not the other restaurants. We should have been clued in when arrived and there were only a few other patrons at 7 on a Sunday night. read more

This is the first time in a few months I've visited my old stand by. I've been eating here since the birth of Uncle Julios on this very spot in the shell of a former Resturant. Just like a hermit crab they swooped in and did an efficient job of turning the place into a great Tex Mex spot. It really held up for many years, renovation( I'm not sure why the last one) and menu changes. So if anyone's qualified to review this grand dam of the area it is I. After three successive visits of ever weakening margaritas, increasing prices and shrinking portions I here by declare this Resturant on decline from its previous preeminent position on top of the Tex Mex heap. Nothing a little attention to margarita strength, price control and portion size can't fix though. There are just too many options as of this writing to patronize the same place if they can't hear the customer. We are in a gold rush mentality now in Big D and a lot of people are taking business for granted. But when things moderate economically those that rise to the top will be the ones who've been true to their principles just like Uncle Jz once was. read more

I wouldn't go here for authentic Mexican food but it is a good place to get fairly decent Tex Mex. The atmosphere is like any other big chain restaurant with a slight Mexican twist. The service can get spotty especially on busy nights but they try to be attentive. The food here is hit or miss. Really like their fajitas and salads. Other things like their ribs are not very "Mexican" (probably my fault for trying to get Mexican ribs) but a good rendition of ribs and they give you a whole lot of food. The drinks are decent but pretty weak--extra theatrical points for their table side margaritas. I love their shrimp fajitas! Overall, a good place for Americanized Mexican food and VERY fresh and yummy tortillas they make on premises. Also, while the prices are a little steep, you get a lot for the money. I used to really love Uncle Julio's food, especially their chips and salsa. I was extremely disappointed and sad after trying to eat lunch here with my family. The chips were good, the salsa was disgusting and I ended up not eating it after we ordered some queso. I ordered a combo plate so I could get a little of each of the things I was craving. Tamales are my favorite, and these tamales were tasteless, and dry, so I moved on the the chicken enchiladas, which were tasteless and dry as well. It was like someone forgot to put sauce or something inside them. Lastly the beef taco, was okay, but also quite sad itself. I ended up not eating the food and not taking it home either. Wow. Aside from the hostess at the front, the staff here is incredibly nice. From the person that brought us our chips, to the person taking our order and everyone in between. It had been at least a year since I have been here and I must have forgotten how great it is. I took my friend here for the 1st time and he loved it. I ordered the cheese and onion enchiladas with queso sauce. It was the best enchiladas I have ever eaten. The server who brought us our food also said "wow. that sure looks good. I've never had that, but now I think I'll have to try it". My friend got the beef tacos and he enjoyed them. They give you huge portions which is great because you can take food home! We also ordered the sopapillas which come bite size so you can eat them with a fork. I've never had them this way, but soooo good. You have to try one of their frozen margaritas. Friends treated us to a Tex-Mex dinner at Uncle Julio's on our first night in Dallas. Our server, José, brought out salsa & chips for us to snack on while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. It was a huge basket, large enough to split four ways. By the time our friends got there 15 minutes later I had eaten so many chips that I figured I didn't have room for a large entrée. So I ordered a bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup. Instead of sprinkling the tortilla strips on top of the soup as a crispy garnish, they were cooked into the soup. Just limp and pitiful...the texture of spaghetti noodles. And although the soup tasted like chicken, there were no detectable chunks of meat in the bowl. I would definitely never order it again and, in fact, it's probably the worst version of Chicken Tortilla Soup I've ever tasted. The three others ordered fajitas. My guy got Grilled Red Snapper and our friends chose the Skirt Steak for Two. The first time their platter came out they returned it because the meat was lying silently on the platter. (Apparently, it's not a real fajita unless it makes a sizzling sound.) The second time around the meat was searing hot. The manager even came out minutes later to make sure they were satisfied with their meal. They were and that was a nice touch on his part. This is a good Tex-Mex place in Dallas. I had lunch here and was satisfied from beginning to end. The chips and tortillas are homemade, and the salsa is delicious. I had a combo platter, which included a chicken enchilada, a beef taco, and a tamale. The enchilada was really good. It had a delicious, tangy sour cream sauce on it, which I highly recommend if you get enchiladas. The ingredients tasted like they were good quality, and you could taste the chicken, unlike the mushy enchiladas at other places. The tamale was really good, and I'll probably try these again. The taco was not bad, but it wasn't anything special either, so I wouldn't get it here. The sopapillas were awesome, and anyone who goes here should finish off their meal with an order of this. They're light and fluffy rather than greasy, and I think I could finish off an entire order of them (approximately 20-30 mini sopapillas) on my own, but it would probably be better for four people to share. read more

OK...first off I've been enjoying over 20 years of eating at Uncle Julios. But, today my loyalty was lowered a few notches. I've seen a steady increase in their menu, especially fajitas...my favorite dish here. In fact, there's only one other place in Dallas that I would trust the fajitas at...at a lower price. Pappsita's....here I come. The marinate used in their signature fajitas has got to be the best around. There's consistency too and they serve your fajitas very quickly... so don't fill up on the yummy fresh tortilla chips served with fresh salsa. After adding sour cream and cheese to your fajita order... be prepared for your bill to be $20! I seemed like to me about 10 years ago they were more like $12. Quite an increase over the years. But, with that I expect more too.... like more THAN one once portion of pico de gallo. Today, the meat in my order made 5 fajitas with all 5 flesh flour tortillas. The 1 oz of pico is enough for 2 fajitas at the most. AND... it's cheap cheap stuff for them to make! The last several times I've been I've asked for additional pico de gallo at no extra cost. They offer it for a dollar more....which is crazy knowing it probably cost them a dime at the most to make per oz. I think Taco Cabana has far better pico and an unlimited amount you can add to your meal there... for there are stacks of little (1 oz) plastic with lids to convenient to take home for you carry out. For those familiar with Taco Cabana, you're also familiar with unlimited fresh chopped cilantro, several different salsas, fresh chopped onion as well as chopped jalapenos. So... for them to be pretty much be giving these items away at no cost makes me really question Uncle Julios for charging and giving inadequate portions. Of the last few times I've asked for more pico at Uncle Julio's, they've given me more at no cost... but made it seem like they were doing me a favor for not charging. Any person that enjoys a good fajita knows there are certain ingredients needed to make it complete.... marinated tender meat, fresh tortillas, guacamole, fresh pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, grilled onions, grilled bell peppers and jalapenos. Uncle Julios pretty much has the fajitas almost perfected. Today, I asked my waitress to see if I could get more pico and she said she'd have to charge... but she's send the manager out to speak with me and see if they would do it. They weren't giving me any today without charging... regardless. I told them about Taco Cabana doing the same for no charge and the female manager started this whole spill about how that's the freshest of ingredients in theirs. I told her that still doesn't cost more and Taco Cabana has just as good if not better for FREE. For a good TeX Mex place, I'd always always always recommend Mia's a block a away for far superior food. Unfortunately, Mia's doesn't have better fajitas... but everything else is better. Pappasitas is the other alternative for fajitas.... but they can't hold a candle to the wind when it comes to Mia's on Lemmon Ave. It's the best Tex Mex in all of Texas... trust me on that. After today's disappointment, I decided to change my loyalty to Pappasitas if I'm in a fajita mood... otherwise Mia's is my best recommendation for anyone visiting Dallas or lives here. 3/5/13 It's been several days since I've had Mexican food, which for most Texans is twice or three times a week on average. After my rant and rave about getting shorted on my pico de gallo ealier this week at Uncle Julios, I was craving it and went to Taco Cabana for lunch. Before you make your way up to the counter to select and pay for your meal, you walk right by the Salsa Bar... where half a dozen different fresh salsa's are out as well as the yummy FREE pico de gallo. I enjoed my my lunch and about 5 oz of pico total. I took pics of the setup here to see if it makes my issue with Uncle Julio's better understood. Amazing restaurant! This was my second time here, and it did not disappoint. My bf and I came here on a date. We started with the cowboy queso, which was delicious!! The Spicy Margaritas were too good, we loved them. We both ordered tacos, which is our favorite! It was so much food, enough for left overs. The service was wonderful. Our server Antonio was so nice! He was very welcoming, and came around multiple times to make sure we had everything. I think even the manager was on the floor, he came around all the tables. When almost every Yelp review mentions Julio's chicken fajitas, you have to begin to at least suspect there might be something amazing going on here. I ordered the spicy guacamole, as well as a two person order of the chicken fajitas on my visit. The server told us a 2 person order corresponded to about 3 tortillas filled with fajitas per person, and she was spot on. The pile of chicken and onions that emerged was glistening with what appeared to be a decadent butter sauce. For each order of fajitas, you get a small plate with rice and beans, and another small plate with guacamole and pico de gallo. There is an option to add a side of shredded cheese and a dollop of sour creme for under $2, which worked out for my party because I like sour cream and the other lady likes cheese. The chicken was perfectly cooked breast meat, sliced into 1/2 thick sections across the breast. The tortillas are slightly thick, freshly made, and don't tear under the extreme pressure of containing the fajita toppings. The guacamole 'appetizer' we ordered was entirely unnecessary, as the fajitas themselves come with a nicely sized scoop of guac. The salsa is dark and slightly spicy and above all super fresh tasting. The chips are thin. Not so thin that every single one breaks as you try to load it up with salsa, but thin enough that you could eat two baskets full and not feel like you're about to explode. You will, however, feel like you need to take off your pants, or trade them in for a moo moo if you eat an entire single serving of the glorious fajitas. We didn't have any of their specialty drinks, but they appear to have a lot of them, and folks all around us seemed to think they were filled with some kind of eau de vie that would turn back time. If you get there before normal people dinner time (we arrive about 5:30 on a Saturday), you can park in front on the lemmon side of the parking lot without having to use the valet. read more

I am shocked at the lack of service tonight at Uncle Julios...simply shocked. We waited for a table for an hour because they were expecting a large party of 30, which ended up being 18. Our waiter came over and brought is one drink and never came back to take our order. I them went over and closed out my bar tab, where our waiter was standing and told him " guess you forgot us". A manger stepped over to explain that he has a large table and I explained to her that he had 4 waiters helping him on his " large table". I explained to the manger or whoever asked about our order that I am flight crew for a major carrier and take care of 175 passengers on a flight and inquired why waiter couldn't come over to take my order. This was our 24th wedding anniversary..we had 2 drinks and left. This restaurant and management needs to be retrained on customer service. We spend our anniversary at another restaurant down the road. Really sad as we have loved Uncle Julios and were exited to enjoy a nice evening here...never again. Marios or Mias are much better choices unless you really don't care about how much your going to spend for 6 chips smeared with beans covered with shredded cheese with a small piece of steak. Our waiter was friendly and attentive from what I remember. Didn't pay much attention to the service because I was so busy conversing! I had the steak fajitas and I shared it with another friend. Another friend got fish tacos with spicy avocado sauce. He let me try his fish taco with a little bit of spicy avocado sauce and my mouth immediate salivate for more. It was like, hello? you're yummy. Wanna get eaten by me, sauce? lol jk. This sauce goes great with everything if you like food a little spicy. this review is for the dinner service received on 01/10/23. we made a reservation and still had to wait, but no problem, we're patient people and had a somewhat large party. upon sitting down we were greeted and asked for drink orders, it took a unusually large time to receive regular fountain drinks and an even longer time to receive their house swirl margarita which is already prepared in the machines. after that we ordered our food, not to mention for a tex-mex restaurant their prices are a more expensive than what you may usually be prepared for but that's not an issue because with higher prices you expect higher quality food. three people in my group ordered the quesabirria tacos which looked ABSOLUTELY nothing like the and tasted like they had no seasoning as well. sent those back. i ordered fajitas which did not come out sizzling like everyone else's did but they were still pretty warm so i didn't complain. the tortillas were really good just could use less butter on the fajita plate. other people in the group ordered the chicken/steak fajita bowl. they weren't asked how they would like their steak cooked and it came out on the medium rare side which was not the preference. upon tasting the bowl it lacked seasoning and had to ask for additional cream and added salt/pepper to enjoy the meal. it was not a super busy night for the restaurant but maybe they were understaffed which should have probably been communicated better. but this is definitely my last time coming. hope they find ways to improve. read more

I really enjoyed my evening at Uncle Julio's in Dallas. Despite the strained parking situation and the twenty minute wait for a table my wife and I were easily able to find two empty seats at the bar. My wife enjoyed both the frozen margaritas and the table side guacamole which was made perfectly. The tortilla chips were hot and fresh from the oven. My entree for the evening was a new item, the honey chipoltle chicken fajitas, which was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Wow. Back in the day you could go in and get a table without being surrounded by hoards of people. Now it is always crowded and so I just drive by many times because who wants to eat with kids wandering around and annoying people everywhere? And then there's the issue of parking. They never used to have the stupid valet until like 2002 and I feel it is stupid to tip someone when I should be able to park my own car. We went on 4-26-14 and the food was great. Sorry Tio this isn't gonna be a good one but I have to be honest. While our server was excellent, our food was surprisingly awful. First, the chips were good but the salsa was very diluted (It was like dipping our chips in water with red food coloring). Wife and I ordered Carne Asada and Steak Fajitas. There was an immediate burnt after taste on my Carne Asada. I thought it was because they overcooked the top side so I sliced that entire side but the meat itself was literally bitter. I tried my wife's steak. Same exact thing. Wondered whether the culprit was the cook or the surface of the grill it was used to sear the meat. Not worth $100 bill, but I was still glad to tip well because our server was good, wasn't his fault. Find out who was cooking between 6:15pm - 6:45pm on July 9. Sitting at the bar during happy hour, we had the best hand shaken margaritas at the bar served up by a personable attentive bartender. I sampled the chicken and steak fajitas w/beans and rice(sour cream, pico, cheese, and guacamole on a bed of lettuce) We also tried the watermelon margaritas. When you have to wait 45 min to an hour to get a table, this tells you something about the place. This place was busy and happening!!! We got there around 8pm, we got a table around 9pm. We got the chips and salsa and took some time to review the menu. Since this was my first time, I wasn't sure what I should eat. It was also my first time doing Tex-mex! So I asked my friends what they typically order when they are there, but I wanted to do something different. So I ended up ordering Herschel's Platter (Chicken enchilada, cheese chile relleno, pork tamale, beef taco al carbon). Just be warned, if you order this, lot of food on the plate, you can share this with someone, but that all depends on how hungry you are!! N-o-t a great meal; I had the shrimp tacos which were too heavy on the jicama and WAY too heavy on the overly-sweet sauce, which was unnecessary given the sweet fruit. I ate the shrimp and left the rest. The woman to my left had the same tacos and ate only one of the three. However, the other entree's that I spied around me looked great, and the beans and rice were different but good. It started with a watery Salsa and tasteless Lemonade, complained to waiter and his response was they're about to close and ran out of Salsa and lemonade , an excuse for adding water !!! So we came in last night with a group of friends meeting up for drinks and dinner. Thankfully, we had a reservation for our party in advance so seating was quick and easy. I'd say, we waited less than 5 minutes upon arriving. The host staff sat us in the main dining room which was great as I love to observe people. Our server quickly arrived and welcomed us to the restaurant and quickly took our drink order, I ordered my usual big boy drink....A glass of PINOT NOIR. The guys ordered MARGARITAS. The drinks then arrived and to my surprised, it was a glass of PINOT GRIGIO which our server addressed the issue by offering a Cabernet instead. ****Note to restaurant: please carry the RED STUFF***she was gracious and kept our chips and salsa full as everyone made their deliberations on menu choices. I offered the BEEF FAJITAS, it came out a bit red for my liking. Again, the item was corrected and the it was brought up to medium. Just as a caveat, they cook their FAJITAS at rare to Med-rare so be sure to specify. The TORTILLAS was perfect, soft, chewy and pillowy. Exactly, how they should be! The other dishes looked great as well. Overall, the restaurant is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, appreciate the redesign which adds a warm rustic feel and service WAS OUTSTANDING! read more

Really awful selection if you're looking for a meatless option. I realize meatless is not everyone's cup of tea, but even basic Tex-Mex things like cheese enchiladas are practically inedible. Chips are too thin and don't feel like they're made from tortillas. Queso was not good. Skip the large if you're getting a to go order - it's $11 and you're not going to eat it, plus it's not big. This restaurant always seems crowded - I always see people waiting outside for curbside and the porch is usually full. It's also SUPER LOUD inside - even when there aren't a ton of people inside. There were maybe 4 or 5 tables seated and it was like walking into a club. It was really hard to communicate with the staff because we were wearing masks and the atmosphere was so loud. When I was on the phone with them later I swear to god someone was banging pots and pans in the background - couldn't hear anything. The only plus of this restaurant is the waitstaff seems nice (I waited for a to go order inside and was asked 3 times if I needed water). My order wound up being wrong and I didn't find out until I got home. I specified I wanted no meat (multiple times because it was so loud and I was worried that would get lost in communication - not sure how this still wound up being messed up) and the whole enchilada plate was sprinkled with meat lol. They remade the enchiladas but didn't give me new rice and beans. They were nice about remaking the food. The hostess was very nice and apologetic. I hope she gets all the tips for the to go orders. The food was wayyy too expensive for what I received. $12.50 for TWO enchiladas, rice, and beans that I wound up not eating! The cheese "and onion" enchiladas were just tortillas filled with cheese - no onions in sight - with their usual queso on top. They didn't have a sour cream sauce option like other Tex-Mex places usually have. The chili con carne that was on the first incorrect order may have made it better for some people, but it looked thin and watery imo. I def won't be eating here again. Maybe its the southern Indiana white trash in me, but I generally enjoy Uncle Julio's. I've always thought they have the best, soft tortillas, and pretty damn good fajitas. As far as margaritas- depending on who's bartending, they're generally a winner as well. Wife and I uber'd over to this location, after the dinner rush on Saturday, around 9P. The place was still buzzing, but we snagged the last 2 barstools, after approx. a 5 minute wait of us acting like buzzards. The bartender, albeit extremely busy, immediately took our drink order. Then, she proceeds to in an embarrassed manner, tell us that they're out of salsa. Seriously, how the hell does a Mexican restaurant run out of salsa!? Management? Hello? Chips in front of us, sans salsa, we proceed to order queso (since there was no salsa) and margaritas. The African American bartender (working the well) made a perfect margarita. Not to mention, she worked her butt off, while the other bartender (ta tas hanging out, like she was just picked off from Twin Peaks) just grinned and didn't do much of anything. As far as the queso- it was horrible, and watered down. Maybe they were rationing queso this evening as well. The fajitas were good, but not as good as I've had at other locations. The service- from the one "working" bartender was very good, considering how busy she was. Dirty high tops, that were still not cleaned when we left, and no salsa. Visited this place for the first time today. Thought it looked like a decent place from the outside but I was very much disappointed once I received my food. Ordered a small queso. It was like melted cheese slices and very watery. Not good at all. For my main I ordered fajita quesadillas. The plate looked full but unfortunately the quantity of meat inside them was very limited. When I think of fajita quesadilla I think of peppers and onions. Neither of those two were included. You can definitely see they ration the quantity of food and try make it look presentable. The taste was not good at all either. I would not recommend visiting Uncle Julios at all. read more

So so happy, UJ is on Postmates. I placed a big order and for some reason I couldn't make adjustments it custom my oder to my liking. So I decided to call them and George who answered was so sweet had great energy that says a lot through the phone. He was more than happy to adjust my order to my liking. Staff (Patrick) at our hotel (Sheraton Suites) highly recommended Uncle Julio's upon our arrival. We were looking for the local's favorite when it comes to Mexican food. We were definitely not disappointed! The staff was very welcoming, safety measures in place...and our server James (Jim) was outstanding. He was very fun, personable and not to mention helpful in recommending menu items to some first-timers. He kept our chips (light and delicious) and handmade tortillas coming until our order arrived. We also ordered the queso appetizer which was amazing. Two of us ordered the Tex-Mex Combination, one ordered Enchiladas and another the Skirt Steak Fajitas. Everything was so fresh and full of flavor! I'd highly recommend any of these options. Portions are plentiful as well. So happy we stopped in! read more
